Ford, Renault developing global engines from India

by RavenAvi
The ET reports that Ford India is developing a new range of engines dubbed Dragon from it's India-based unit. The engines will be ready by 2016-17, and will come in two avatars, a 1.2L powertrain and a 1.5L powertrain.

Similarly, Renault's R&D unit in Chennai has developed a 986-cc petrol engine which they have dubbed B4D, which is an enhanced version of a 0.8L indigenous engine which Renault plans to use in a new globally launched small car sometime in 2015-16.

Quote:

While Ford plans to use India as a base for manufacturing the engines, its French rival is relying on the capability of its Indian research and development base. Both are trying to gain from India's low-budget capabilities.

Ford has an engine-production capacity of 3.4 lakh units in Chennai and it exports 40% of this output. Once the Sanand plant goes on stream by mid-2015, it's capacity will go up to more than 6.1 lakh engines.
