It’s only been a few weeks since the first shipments of Apple’s new M1-powered 24”iMac hit doorsteps around the globe and iFixit has already shared a detailed teardown that takes an inside look at what Apple has managed to pack inside the ridiculously thin all-in-one desktop computer.

As has become custom with recent iFixit teardowns, we get an X-ray view of the iMac’s insides thanks to Creative Electron. The X-ray images revealed a few things about the iMac before ever tearing it open. First off, the silicon inside the iMac is concentrated almost entirely on the very top and bottom of the device, separated by two large metal plates and the signature Apple logo on the back, which doubles as an RF pass-through.

Other details iFixit points out before cracking open the case of the 24” M1 iMac is that it its main housing measures exactly two iPads deep and is so thin that it requires the 3.5mm headphone jack to be placed on the side of the computer since the length of a standard 3.5mm audio plug is longer than the depth of the iMac. Another interesting tidbit iFixit noticed is that its model was ‘Made in Thailand,’ which is notable considering iMacs have historically been assembled in China.

To iFixit’s surprise, getting inside the iMac proved to be fairly straightforward. Apple uses a simple adhesive to secure single piece of glass on the front of the device and screws — not glue — are used to hold most of the internal components in place. The lack of the metal ‘chin’ also means all of the internal components, including the iMac’s dual fans, are easy to access, unlike previous Intel iMacs.

The M1 logic board inside the 24” M1 iMac is, unsurprisingly, the smallest ever seen in an iMac. Unfortunately, this comes at the cost of upgradability and repairability as there’s no way to increase internal storage or memory./ If you’re wondering what all is soldered to the M1 logic board, iFixit has a detailed reference guide.

iFixit also discovered that the two circles it saw on the X-ray were indeed coin batteries, believed to be there to protect the NVRAM inside the iMac. What’s interesting though is that it appears Apple chose to use two ultra-thin CR2016 batteries over a single (and more common) CR2032 battery as to make the most of the incredibly limited internal volume. Other discoveries include a modular headphone jack, a sturdy power button, a solid speaker array and the realization that if you ever plan to mount an iMac on a VESA mount, be sure to choose the VESA version from the onset, because there’s no accessing the hinge from the outside.

There's no getting inside the power adapter block without destroying it in the process.

To complete the teardown experience, iFixit also took apart the iMac power brick and the matching Touch ID Magic Keyboard. Overall, iFixit gives the new iMac a repairability score of just 2 out of 10. Despite certain components being more modular, the inability to upgrade the internal storage or memory makes it mostly impossible to upgrade from the inside, even if you get past the sticky adhesive used to hold the glass display on.

Denmark-based landscape photographer Mads Peter Iversen recently put together a tips video for landscape photographers that has nothing to do with technique and everything to do perspective. It’s called: 5 Important Reasons to do Local Landscape Photography.

In the video, Iversen explains how exploring his local landscapes and staying close to home has not only helped him hone his landscape photography and scouting skills, it’s also produced some of his favorite photographs.

“I find it very important to not just focus on travel landscape photography, but also explore the landscapes close to your home,” explains Iversen in the video’s description. “There is usually no reason why you can not take some interesting and beautiful landscape photos in your local forest, meadow, or even swamp. With these five reasons, I hope to inspire you to get out more without having to plan and pack too much. Just go out and have fun with your photography.”

Here are those reasons listed out for those of you who prefer reading to watching:

1. It’s much easier and cheaper. You’ll save money, time, and energy by exploring your local landscapes instead of jetting off to Iceland.
2. It’s the best place to “hone your skills,” so that when you do invest in traveling to an exotic location, you’re prepared to get the shot.
3. You may find that you appreciate the photos you capture near your home more than the ones you shoot in a “trending” landscape photography location.
4. You have the luxury of time. You can scout indefinitely and optimize your compositions, going back time and again until you know the local landscape more intimately than any visitor ever could.
5. Staying local will keep you from shooting in an “oversaturated” market (unless you live in Iceland…), and your local images are much more likely to connect with a local audience.

The DJI Phantom 5 drone is allegedly featured in two newly-leaked images—as well as a few sketches—that claim to reveal details about the unannounced model. The leak comes from Twitter account "OsitaLV," which also leaked images that allegedly showed the Phantom 5 camera in March. The images in the most recent leak, however, include the full drone, lenses, and controllers.

One of the two newly leaked images (below) shows the same camera featured in the March leak, though with the lens removed and featured at a new angle:

OsitaLV also shared three sketches showing the camera and lenses, one claiming the DJI Phantom 5's interchangeable lens camera has a 1-inch CMOS sensor. Another sketch claimed four F2.8 lenses will be available: 15mm, 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm. Finally, the second new image shows the complete drone with the same grey body color and dark landing gear visible in the March leak.

OsitaLV previously claimed the Phantom 5 will feature a plastic GPS antenna cover, aluminum shell, and plastic landing gear. In a tweet shared on April 26th, the same Twitter user claimed that DJI has moved the motor cooling holes to the bottom of the drone and added more sealing rings to the battery, effectively making the drone "rainproof."

Of course, none of this is considered confirmed or official until DJI makes it so, but leaks this substantial are rarely far off the mark. Keep an eye out for the official DJI news in the coming weeks or months—it shouldn't be long now.

While most people will be out experimenting with a little chemical called Ethanol on Halloween, at least one photographer decided to use some Ethyl Ether and Silver Nitrate instead. Markus Hofstaetter—whose work we've featured in the past—decided to take a few wet plate collodion portraits this Halloween, and documented the entire process in a creative 360° video.

The main shot Hofstaetter was after is actually not the hard-core looking skull portrait in the GIF at the top. Instead, he wanted to take a self-portrait in the style of Walter White "Heisenberg" of Breaking Bad.

"I feel always like him when I prepare the chemicals for my collodion wet plate process," Markus writes on his blog. He also went for an imperfect look. By not cleaning the edges of the plates after the silver bath and not cleaning the plate holder. "It's not always about perfection."

Speaking to DPReview, Markus explained some of the particulars of his process:

I like to use trays for sanitizing my plates much more than typical silver bath tanks. That’s because mamut plates are easier to handle, the alcohol (that comes from the collodion coating into the silver bath) can easier evaporate in a tray and it’s so much easier to fill 2 Liters of nitrate back in a bottle with a tray.

All Chemicals I use are self-made and the collodion is typically done on the day before the shooting to get the plates more sensible to light. I make developer and fixer occasionally – these are very stable. The silver bath is Maintained two to three times a year.

As you can see in the video, I forgot to wear my glasses when I put the plate into the silver bath tray the first time – this is very dangerous!!! Because one drop of silver nitrate in your eye will blind you. Never happened before – but I was kind of busy with the 360 cam :(

Normally I wear masks too (the Ether in the Collodion is unhealthy), but I didn’t want to get indents on my face from the mask. You would have seen that in the picture.

Hasselblad H5D-50c Wi-Fi Hands-On Review

Following our recent field test of the Phase One 645DF+ and an accompanying IQ250 back, we thought it would be interesting to see how the same 50MP CMOS sensor is employed by another medium-format beast: the Hasselblad H5D-50c Wi-Fi. This particular Sony sensor is interesting. It may not be the highest resolution sensor in its size class, but its CMOS technology allows ISO sensitivity ratings that its CCD rivals simply can't match. This extra sensitivity - largely due to the low noise CMOS architecture - lends immense flexibility to cameras that traditionally have been rather tied to the studio and are often only capable of location work when accompanied by a few powerful lights. The low noise sensor combined with the large surface area of the medium format sensor also lends the camera slightly more Raw dynamic range than even the best full-frame cameras, something landscape shooters are sure to appreciate.

That the majority of medium-format camera brands want to be able to offer the features that this 50MP sensor makes possible is understandable, and in fact Pentax, Phase One, Leaf and Hasselblad have all built solutions around it. Of course, having the same sensor doesn't automatically guarantee that all of these cameras will give exactly the same results.

The Hasselblad H5D-50c Wi-Fi is a medium-format DSLR camera that uses a back fitted with a 50MP sensor. The sensor measures 43.8 x 32.9mm and has a pixel array of 8272 x 6200 that outputs Raw images weighing in between 65 and 90MB. The Raw files are saved in Hasselblad's own 3FR format that uses lossless compression. The camera is capable of simultaneous JPEG output as well – but JPEG files are only 12.7MP and measure 4128 x 3088. Think of them as the digital equivalent of a Polaroid proof print.

The H5D-50c's CMOS sensor allows an ISO range of 100-6400 which is slightly wider and shifted towards higher sensitivities when compared to the 50-800 range of the company's CCD offering. Color is recorded in 16-bit 'definition' and rendered according to Hasselblad's Natural Color Solution color profile. The company recommends its own Phocus software for post-production work and for tethered shooting, but the files are also compatible with Adobe's Camera Raw application – all of which are included in the purchase price of the kit.

Other primary specifications worth pointing out include a shutter speed range of 34 minutes to 1/800sec – more impressive at the longer end than the shorter – spot, center-weighted and center-spot metering across a EV1-21 range, and a single-spot AF system that works between EV1-19.

The new features of the H5D-50c Wi-Fi obviously include the integration of Wi-Fi wireless communication in the digital back. This allows the user to connect the camera to an iOS smart device so that it can be controlled remotely and images can be viewed, before and after shooting, on the screen of an iPhone or iPad. An app called Phocus runs the connection and allows a good deal of control over the camera's settings, as well as the ability to browse images stored on the card loaded in the camera.

Live View is another important 'new' feature, giving photographers the chance to see through the lens via the rear screen. At the same time you can use the built-in level to check the camera is straight, and once images are captured it's possible to preview focused areas via magnification or peaking, as well as see over- and under-exposure warnings.

This is also the first new Hasselblad for some time to accept film backs, so users can switch easily between digital and traditional media.

Handling

The body of the H5D-50c is a good deal more modern than the 1980's Mamiya derivative that is the Phase One 645DF+ (which has since been replaced by the Phase One XF). The well-designed hand grip makes the weight of the body pleasant to hold, and the lens and back feel balanced. Although the kit – even with the small standard 80mm lens – is heavy, the designers have made a great job of reducing the strain through the way we are forced to hold the body. During my time with the camera, non-photographers consistently commented to me on how big it was, but also how comfortable it is to hold and use. Probably due to the form-factor, many people also thought it was a video camera.

Hasselblad has arranged the majority of control points around the bulky grip of the right hand. An LCD panel on the top of the grip displays options and settings with the resolution and panache of yesterday's Casio digital watch – but without the screen size. This tiny display is the interface between the photographer and a mass of complicated functions, and while it can do the job it really isn't ideally suited to it.

The grip is equipped to keep all of your fingers busy, with buttons on the back for the thumb, on the top for fingers and on the front for stretched out digits. It is remarkable how much can be accessed without changing the way the camera is held – including the mirror lock-up, depth-of-field preview and the True Focus button. With the HVD 90x prism head attached, as it was for the duration of this test, the photographer has access to an exposure compensation button – at a stretch – and the button for adjusting the exposure mode. All adjustments of features and functions are dealt with efficiently by a pair of small but comfortable wheels under the thumb and forefinger.

Further control is afforded by the screen on the digital back and the accompanying small, spongy buttons. While 35mm-style DSLRs can host all their features on a rear screen, this screen only really allows us to alter white balance, image format and other issues relating directly to the operations of the back. The back is attached to the body alright, and the two communicate, but the two are not fully integrated. You can't adjust body functions via the back, so the real estate of that spacious rear screen is largely redundant when not being used to view what has just been captured.

Working with a single AF point that is fixed in the middle of the frame is par for the course for a lot of medium-format shooters, but hardly ideal. Although the system is reasonably quick I think it is fair to say that autofocus isn't one of the camera's strongest points – as indeed it isn't in the Phase One 645DF+. When tripod-mounted, you're obviously better off focusing manually using the magnified view in Live View, but when working handheld, AF is much improved by the addition of Hasselblad's True Focus system.

True Focus makes a real difference if you're a 'focus lock and recompose' kind of a photographer. After locking AF and recomposing your scene, the camera measures the angle that the camera has been shifted by, and adjusts the focus position accordingly to compensate for the fractionally greater subject to imaging plane distance. It is very clever, and works very well most of the time.

As with other large-bodied medium-format cameras, some caution needs to be exercised when working with the H5D hand-held. No matter how comfortable the grip and how well suited the camera seems to off-tripod operation, the slap of the mirror is a significant hazard to image sharpness, especially at shutter speeds below 1/250sec.

Image quality

I think most experienced medium-format photographers will be inclined to forgive some handling irritations for the sake of the image quality (they're probably used to doing exactly that). And for me, the detail and dynamic range of the successful frames I shot with the H5D-50c worked like some memory-obliterating drug, making me forget about how awkward the camera can - sometimes - be to use. 

Unsharpened	Sharpened

Images from this camera look really quite soft in their Raw state, which alarmed me at first. They need a good deal of sharpening applied. However, when used at low ISO settings and at an optimal aperture, the amount of detail captured is fabulous.

Hasselblad seems to have set the processing in Phocus to prioritize noise reduction over detail, so images are less noisy than those shot on the Phase One IQ250 back and opened in Capture One Pro - but they need a good deal more sharpening to bring out textures in the subject matter. When the same images are opened in Adobe Camera Raw the amount of noise from the two backs is much more comparable. 

Dynamic range is extensive, and the camera is capable of capturing a wider range of tones than the best full-frame DSLRs. As is the case generally with digital capture, it is easier to lift shadows than to recover blown highlights: once pixels saturate and clip, there's no information to recover. Modern CMOS sensors like this one can retain a truly astonishing amount of detail in shadow areas, with little of the noise and / or banding penalty that we might have expected in previous-generation CCD sensors. This low noise CMOS architecture combined with the massive amount of light the large medium format sensor can collect means photographers can deal with high contrast scenes by exposing for highlights and tone-mapping shadows in post.

Unfortunately, exposing in this manner isn't helped by the camera's unsophisticated metering system, nor the fact that the rear screen is not a very reliable visual gauge of what has been captured – other than when the histogram display is showing. There is a clipping display option, but it is more a reflection of what will be lost in the JPEG images rather than what will be unrecoverable in the Raw files.

I found Hasselblad's color quite difficult to get used to, and in some cases it took a while to make it work. I suppose it is hardly surprising that color, dynamic range and sharpness are easier to deal with in the company's Phocus software than they are in Adobe Camera Raw, but even so there were occasions I struggled to get images to look the way I remembered seeing the original scene.

Summing up

This is the third medium-format camera I have tested in recent months so it is almost impossible not to compare the Hasselblad H5D-50c Wi-Fi in some ways to the Phase One 645DF+ and the Leica S Type 007. Although different in handling and specification, the Hasselblad H5D-50c Wi-Fi is generally quite similar to the Phase One camera; as it is based on a older body, uses the same sensor, has Wi-Fi and Live View – but both seem very clunky when compared to the slick operation of the Leica. The Hasselblad mirror is less violent than the Phase One unit, and the body handling is overall more comfortable and better thought-out, but the integration of the digital back is less complete.

I appreciate being able to use flash at all shutter speeds, but found it hard to accept that my fastest shutter speed under any type of light was a very restricted 1/800sec. To me, that is a serious short-coming.

While obviously the quality of the images a camera produces is of the upmost importance, then surely the comfort of the photographer should take more precedence than it does with this H5D body. Most medium-format bodies are actually fairly old fashioned, and the H5D is a prime example. The company may have added some new features to jazz it up, but in my opinion, the whole system could do with a refresh.

Perry Oosting, the Hasselblad CEO, hinted in an interview with us that things are about to change and modernize at Hasselblad, and that the core products would be first on the list. I hope that means we will see something more suited to these modern times than this very able but imperfect machine. As I have said, the image quality it produces is really excellent, but there are so many other things the camera could do better.

We like: 

• Fabulous image quality
• Great handling
• Flash sync at all speeds

We don't like: 

• Body and back not fully integrated
• Top shutter speed is too slow
• Accuracy of rear screen preview

Tesla's Autopilot uses hardware and software from Mobileye to control the Model S on highways. Apparently Tesla would like to discontinue using Mobileye’s code in favor of bringing it in-house, according to an email exchange between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and George Hotz, a software engineer mainly known for being the first person to jailbreak the iPhone.

A report by Bloomberg's Ashlee Vance (above) would have us believe 26-year old hacker George Hotz has built a self-driving car from scratch in a month. Unfortunately for this urban myth, it's fairly obvious the 2016 Acura ILX he's using isn't a random choice.... Honda have offered Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Assist since 2013.

AcuraWatch Plus is a basic $1300 option available on this car that provides Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Collision Mitigation Braking & Road Departure Mitigation.. So the Acura ILX can already perform this 'self-driving' demonstration off the showroom floor.

A more accurate description of Hotz's work is "reverse engineering".

While there is some talk during the interview about machine learning, the system developed for Google's self driving cars by Sebastian Thrun is available free on-line via Udacity.

UPDATE: Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk has now posted a correction to the article by Ashlee Vance politely calling the entire story "inaccurate"!

Nessun ministro o sottosegretario è salito sui monti della Versilia, fino a Sant’Anna di Stazzema, per partecipare alla commemorazione del 71esimo anniversario della strage nazifascista compiuta dalle Ss, che – con l’aiuto dei fascisti locali – il 12 agosto del ’44 uccisero 560 persone, per lo più donne, vecchi e bambini. Enrico Pieri, presidente dell’associazione Martiri di Sant’Anna, si è “rammaricato” per l’assenza di un rappresentante del governo, ha sottolineato il sindaco di Stazzema Maurizio Verona.

Quest anno la strage e il genocidio armeno sono stati accomunati sul colle di Cava, nel luogo in cui furono sepolte le vittime. Il presidente della Repubblica Sergio Mattarella ha inviato un messaggio ai cittadini del paese in provincia di Lucca: “E’ lodevole l’impegno con cui la vostra comunità mantiene vivo il ricordo dei martiri di Sant’Anna. E’ un’eredità preziosa per i giovani, che imparano ad apprezzare le conquiste di pace, democrazia e libertà, ottenute con tanto sangue e tante sofferenze. Quest’anno il ricordo della strage è reso particolarmente significativo dall’inaugurazione della nuova sistemazione dei luoghi simbolo dell’eccidio; sistemazione avvenuta con il contributo del land tedesco del Baden-Württemberg“. “Alla popolazione di Sant’Anna, ai familiari delle vittime, a tutti i partecipanti alla commemorazione invio il mio sentito e commosso saluto” si conclude la nota.

Alla cerimonia hanno preso parte il sindaco di Stazzema Maurizio Verona, l’ambasciatore della Repubblica di Armenia, Sargis Ghazaryan, il presidente del Consiglio regionale Eugenio Giani, il sindaco di Moers, Christoph Fleischhauer e Tassos Papaharalambos, rappresentante della città di Distomo, in Grecia, dove il 10 giugno 1944 le truppe naziste uccisero 218 civili e ancora attende verità e giustizia per quell’eccidio.

Enrico Pieri – che il 25 giugno scorso, anche grazie a ilfattoquotidiano.it, ha incontrato il nipote di un soldato che partecipò all’eccidio di civili venuto a Sant’Anna per chiedere perdono – ha sottolineato nel suo intervento l’assenza di un rappresentante del governo: “Pieri – ha spiegato il sindaco di Stazzema – si è rammaricato del fatto che non ci fosse un esponente del Governo. In realtà questo Governo è molto presente rispetto a Sant’Anna di Stazzema, sono stati nostri ospiti il sottosegretario Lotti, i ministri Orlando, Giannini e Boschi”.

C’erano anche gli italiani con le SS a Sant’Anna di Stazzema. Non solo i civili costretti a portare di notte, lungo i tornanti, il peso delle munizioni fino al paese della Versilia e, una volta assolto il compito, fucilati. Ma anche i volontari. Alcuni, arruolati regolarmente nella divisione, non si distinguevano dai tedeschi, perché portavano la divisa; altri, i fascisti locali, giunsero a Sant’Anna con gli abiti civili e il volto coperto per non farsi riconoscere. Dimenticarono però di camuffare la voce. E il loro accento, i santannini lo ricordano ancora.

C’erano anche gli italiani nella 16esima divisione corazzata. Un pensiero che, a distanza di 71 anni, non dà pace a uno dei superstiti, Enio Mancini. Nelle retrovie della divisione, composta in gran parte da ragazzi tra i 17 e i 20 anni e che contava in totale tra i 10mila e i 12mila uomini, gli italiani erano quasi la metà. Lo confermarono, dopo la guerra, il generale Max Simon, ufficiale dell SS, e Frederich Knorr, comandante dei servizi della divisione. Tra i nostri connazionali, alcuni erano stati reclutati dai campi di concentramento, altri arruolati come volontari, altri ancora venivano dall’esercito italiano, disciolto dopo l’8 settembre. Lo storico Carlo Gentile, tra gli esperti chiamati a deporre nel processo del tribunale militare di La Spezia, ha individuato 25 repubblichini arruolati nella 16esima divisione Reichsführer, per gradi che andavano dai soldati scelti ai sergenti.

I “più viscidi”, nei ricordi dei superstiti, erano però i collaborazionisti locali. Furono loro, con ogni probabilità, a condurre le quattro colonne a Sant’Anna. Circondarono il paesino da ogni lato, bloccando ogni via di fuga. Arrivarono all’alba, passando per vie impervie e sconosciute se non ai versiliesi. Del resto Mauro Pieri, Genoveffa Moriconi, Lilia Pardini, Enio Mancini, Renato Bonuccelli, Ada Battistini e molti altri superstiti hanno detto e ripetuto con assoluta certezza di aver sentito parlare in versiliese quella mattina. Nel 1945, a meno di un anno dall’eccidio, lo scrittore Manlio Cancogni, classe 1916, scriveva sulla Nazione del Popolo: “Dei nomi, uno sopra tutti, girano da tempo sulle bocche degli abitanti dell’intera regione e ci si aspetta, forse invano, che prove definitive confermino la verità del sospetto”.

Tra gli accusati di collaborazionismo, c’era Aleramo Garibaldi, che, come ammise alla commissione statunitense che fece le indagini subito dopo i fatti, aveva portato le armi a Sant’Anna, ma negò qualsiasi coinvolgimento attivo. Dopo la guerra, però, una superstite, Maria Luisa Ghilarducci, riconobbe in lui l’uomo che aveva azionato la mitragliatrice contro il suo gruppo. Garibaldi fu scagionato dal fatto che a Sant’Anna furono uccise anche sua moglie e le sue due figlie, che infatti figurano nell’elenco delle vittime. Ma i sospetti su di lui non sono mai stati cancellati. Al contrario di altri portatori, una volta a Sant’Anna Garibaldi non fu fucilato. Anzi, gli fu dato un lasciapassare tedesco per entrare e uscire dalla città. Tra gli altri presunti collaborazionisti citati nel corso degli anni figurano anche Francesco Gatti ed Egisto Cipriani. Nessuno però fu mai condannato, per insufficienza di prove. A dare il colpo di spugna nel 1946, fu l’amnistia firmata dall’allora ministro della Giustizia Palmiro Togliatti, con cui il guardasigilli, in un primo tentativo di pacificazione, condonò i reati di collaborazionismo e di concorso in omicidio compiuti dopo l’8 settembre.

Sant’Anna non è stata l’unica strage nazista che porta il marchio dei collaborazionisti. In altri casi, intervennero, a fianco dei nazisti, vere e proprie formazioni fasciste, come la Decima Mas a Guadine e a Forno, la Brigata Nera Apuana a Vinca e a Bergiola, la Brigata Nera di Lucca in Garfagnana e a Camaiore.

Here’s how much the average couple spent on wedding photography for their big day in 2014: $2,556. That’s nearly a 5% increase from the average cost the previous year of $2,440.

The figure is from a survey of 16,000 brides and grooms in the United States, the largest of its kind, conducted by wedding resource website The Knot. For the eighth year in a row, the service did some serious digging into the financial spending habits for weddings in America.

Here’s a chart that breaks down what couples are spending money on for their weddings:

The studies consistently show that photography is generally the third biggest expense on the wedding day, just after the venue itself and the band at the reception.

If considered as one category with videography, couples are spending an average of $4,350 on professional photos and videos to remember their wedding day. That’s about 14% of the average budget ($31,213) for a wedding these days.

Dieci candidati sindaco, 33 liste e un esercito di 1188 aspiranti consiglieri. Tanti, tantissimi ma non abbastanza da far passare inosservati quei tre nomi. Anna Esperanza Diomede, Francesco Laraspata e Danilo Dammacco. Nell’elenco dei candidati, a chi Bari la conosce almeno un po’, quei tre nomi non scivolano via come gli altri. Perché loro, poco meno che trentenni, hanno una biografia ingombrante: sono tutti appartenenti a famiglie collegate ai clan della malavita locale.

Esperanza, la prima a saltare agli occhi. Ventidue anni, parrucchiera, candidata nella lista Semplicittà, ma soprattutto figlia di Michele Diomede - appena scarcerato dopo una condanna a 25 anni per omicidio – e nipote di Antonio, detto Tetè, scomparso, probabile caso di lupara bianca. Francesco, in arte Terremoto inserito nelle fila di Realtà Italia, figlio di Leonardo Laraspata, ucciso nell’aprile del 2000 a 39 anni per un regolamento di conti tra clan. Un agguato in piena regola consumato sotto gli occhi di moglie e figlia. Sua madre, Luisa, si è miracolosamente salvata, nel 2006: un colpo di pistola per errore ha colpito lei anziché un componente di un’altra famiglia storicamente rivale, davanti al bar dato alle fiamme di recente per una presunta vicenda di racket, della quale lei però si dice estranea. Danilo Dammacco, infine, è candidato nella lista Decaro per Bari ed è figlio di Mario, condannato per traffico di droga nel clan Strisciuglio.

Tutti nomi che il pm Michele Emiliano conosceva benissimo, perché la criminalità era il suo pane quotidiano quando dal 1995 al 2003 era nella Dda di Bari. Nomi che oggi, il suo delfino, Antonio Decaro si ritrova a dover gestire come una bomba tra le mani. Possono i figli pagare gli errori dei padri? Questo è il quesito che, martellante, circola per Bari in questi giorni dividendo l’opinione pubblica e scatenando la bagarre tra i candidati sindaco. “No, naturalmente no” ha detto Decaro consapevole di quanto, invece, sia importante per i tre ragazzi riscattarsi. “Ma una campagna elettorale - aggiunge ancora l’aspirante primo cittadino – non è certo un palcoscenico adatto a questo tipo di rivincita personale e sociale. Strumentalizzata da destra e da sinistra e travolta dalle polemiche rischierebbe di smarrire il senso più autentico della candidatura. Per questo – conclude rivolgendosi alla giovane Diomede – chiedo un passo indietro”. Richiesta formulata ad una, ma valida per tutti.

Se Domenico Dammacco ha preferito accettare la proposta defilandosi dal turbine impazzito della polemica (“Io con mio padre non c’entro nulla – ha scritto – Lavoro onestamente, volevo solo cambiare la città”), gli altri due no. E, anzi, rilanciano sui social network la loro scelta con maggiore determinazione. Tanto da condividere sul profilo Facebook di Laraspata una fotografia che ritrae insieme i due giovani, con la didascalia: “Terremoto e Tempesta, palazzo di città stiamo arrivando”. E sulle rispettive bacheche i due ragazzi, dal viso pulito e supportati dall’affetto di amici e parenti, si sfogano. Più rabbioso Francesco: “Stanco di sopportare queste accuse! Sulla mia famiglia su mio padre. Sono 5 anni che dimostro socialmente chi sono. Dedico il mio tempo libero alla comunità, alla Chiesa, alla scuola! Quindi ve lo vico serenamente.. Non fatemi la guerra mediatica!”

Più pacata ma ugualmente determinata Esperanza: “Non avrò un passato o una vita perfetta ma di certo sono sicura di avere un onore e una dignità che molti non hanno. Non rinnego niente di qualsiasi cosa faccia parte di me…perché tutte le mie esperienze di vita mi hanno aiutato a essere orgogliosa di quello che sono. Segui sempre i tuoi ideali e mai nessuno ti potrà mai schiacciare..” “Mio padre ha pagato per i suoi errori commessi prima che nascessi” spiega Esperanza, aggiungendo che anche lei si divide tra casa e Parrocchia. Fino a qualche tempo fa lontana anni luce dalla politica, oggi si definisce “sveglia, bella e intelligente” e determinata a dare una possibilità ai giovani senza speranza. Questo il messaggio che vuole veicolare. Con l’aiuto della sua nuova addetta stampa.

Vanno avanti come treni, loro. Mentre Decaro affronta i prevedibili strali dei suoi avversari. Gioco facile per il magistrato in aspettativa Desirèe Degirolamo che affila le armi chiedendo al parlamentare come possa pensare di avere le mani libere quando sarà sindaco se si fa imporre la candidatura della figlia di un mafioso. Luigi Paccione, invece, difende la giovane Diomede definendola vittima due volte: di chi l’ha candidata e di chi la contesta. Ma soprattutto Domenico Di Paola, candidato del centrodestra, pur scegliendo la vita della cautela e non entrando nel merito della vicenda, non rinuncia all’opportunità di sferrare un colpo all’avversario definendolo “maestrino di pubbliche virtù”. Attacco che ad Antonio Decaro non va affatto giù. “Molti parlano di etica, in questa campagna elettorale – scrive – in particolare ne parla il mio principale avversario. Proprio lui che è ancora sotto processo, ma, al contrario mio, non ha ritenuto eticamente doveroso aspettarne gli esiti, prima di sottoporsi al giudizio degli elettori”. Frecce agli archi dei candidati da scoccare ogni giorno. E’ il rush finale della campagna elettorale, da giocarsi senza esclusione di colpi.

Airbus is learning from automakers as it works on developing a small aircraft powered by hybrid electric engines that could represent its first move into the market for regional jets.

The development of a regional plane, seating between 70 and 90 people, that can take off and land using electric power could take between 15 and 20 years, Airbus Group Chief Technology Officer Jean Botti told reporters in Munich.

Airbus, which with Boeing dominates the market for passenger jets, presently makes planes that seat more than 150 people.

Airbus is already working on an all-electric two-seater plane, powered by two electric motors with a combined output of 60 kilowatts, hoping this technology will serve as a step to bringing electric motors on to larger aircraft.

The two-seater, which Airbus says is suited for short missions such as pilot training and aerobatics, can run on its lithium-ion polymer batteries for half an hour, with the aim to get it up to an hour.

The batteries are tricky, Botti said. "They're causing us a lot of headaches."

In economia le posizioni ideologiche hanno sempre fatto grandi disastri. Ad esempio, i sostenitori del mercato a tutti i costi nella Russia di Eltsin e di Putin hanno prodotto gli oligarchi e le grandi compagnie monopolistiche. Margaret Thatcher ha potuto concepire i suoi programmi politici solo dopo che una Gran Bretagna, ancorata a vecchie idee, era stata condotta sull’orlo del fallimento. In economia come nel calcio bisogna non aver preclusioni e saper giocare a tutto campo. Non c’è nulla di più pericoloso della persistenza di idee che non trovino riscontro nei fatti. Non riesco a capire perché il principio non debba valere anche per l’Europa e soprattutto per l’euro. Bisogna essere molto più preoccupati per i continui appelli “a non tornare indietro” che non a qualche proposta anche balzana, ma innovativa. “All of us like a sparkling error better than a trivial truth” (Schumpeter). Invece molti, evidentemente non del tutto disinteressati, continuano a lanciare proposte puramente conservative anche davanti alla persistente controprova dei fatti economici e, fra breve, alla prevedibile mazzata antieuropea delle elezioni.

Aggiungiamo a proposito dell’euro che, tra l’altro, qualcuno dovrebbe riconoscere che questo giornale è l’unico in Italia ad aver ospitato un dibattito degno di questo nome, spesso acceso, ma documentato e vario. C’è però un’ulteriore considerazione che vorrei aggiungere. Non sta scritto da nessuna parte che un eventuale uscita dall’euro dovrebbe per forza accompagnarsi a un aumento a due cifre dell’inflazione.

Un po’ di conoscenza storica – che non guasta mai – potrebbe aiutarci a trovare casi eloquenti e contrari. Ad esempio, tra il 1923 e il 1926 i problemi dell’economia italiana erano molto simili agli attuali. Elevato debito pubblico in rapporto alle entrate fiscali. Rischio speculativo sulla divisa nazionale, scarsa crescita, difficoltà delle imprese e obbligo di ristrutturazioni. La strada allora scelta – senza nessun diktat dell’Europa – fu quella della razionalizzazione delle spese, dell’aumento delle entrate, della semplificazione imprenditoriale e del sostegno al potere d’acquisto del ceto medio. Strada un po’ forte e forzata, ma elogiata in primis da John Maynard Keynes.

In effetti ciò di cui si parla raramente è appunto questo ultimo aspetto, una gestione della moneta non per fini politici, ma come strumento per sostenere il potere d’acquisto delle famiglie e dei consumatori, che certamente in caso di forte inflazione andrebbe a gambe all’aria. Pensare che l’uscita dall’euro significhi per forza inflazione vuol dire escludere di fatto la possibilità di abbandonare un sistema monetario che sta facendo più danni che favori. E questo può avvenire solo con una moneta nazionale forte, non con l’attuale tipo di moneta forte, che porta vantaggi ad alcuni paesi a spese di altri. Con una moneta forte nazionale sarebbe possibile rispettare gli impegni finanziari del paese, ripagare gli interessi sul debito e in certa misura anche ridurlo, come appunto fu fatto in quegli anni.

In altre parole è possibile uscire dall’euro, a condizione di creare i presupposti per un ritorno alla lira come moneta forte, cosa che si è già verificata più volte nel corso della storia economica italiana e quindi non impossibile. Per fare questo tuttavia sono necessarie almeno due condizioni:

1. L’azione decisa e continua dei governi verso il risanamento, la riduzione degli sprechi e il sostegno agli investimenti: e questo – come si intende facilmente – è il passo più difficile, perché veramente non potrebbe essere una sola operazione di facciata, di quelle che si vedono in questi giorni, ma dovrebbe incidere chirurgicamente nell’arco di un periodo prolungato su molte situazioni inefficienti e di privilegio del mercato italiano. Lacrime e sangue, soprattutto per chi non hai mai pianto fino ad oggi, ma migliori condizioni per i ceti medi-bassi;

2. Un’eventuale rivalutazione della lira (nuova) nei confronti dell’euro, che riassegni all’economia italiana una posizione più consona, apprezzando la lira (nuova) nei confronti dell’euro rispetto al cambio originario lira (vecchia) euro (almeno + 20%); tale operazione potrebbe essere fatta in concomitanza con l’assestamento di un forte vincolo anti-inflativo, quale potrebbe essere ad esempio quello di legare la nuova lira all’oro o di assumere precisi impegni antinflazionistici da parte della Banca d’Italia. Ci sarebbe da tirare la cinghia (perché gli errori sono stati fatti e non si distribuiscono pasti gratuiti), ma almeno saremmo padroni a casa nostra e il futuro, roseo o negativo che fosse, tornerebbe nelle nostre mani.

Con una nuova lira forte si otterrebbe il triplice scopo di risanare l’economia italiana, aumentare il potere di acquisto dei cittadini e ridurre il debito pubblico, che andrebbe convertito in titoli di debito pubblico di nuova emissione meno redditizi, ma più solidi. Certamente ci potrebbero essere alcune conseguenze negative sull’export (che diventerebbe meno agevole per l’aumento reale del costo del lavoro) e per i rischi che una mancata ristrutturazione dell’economia italiana non faccia partire quella crescita, principale fattore di sostegno dell’incremento di reddito reale degli italiani. Ma usciremmo dalla palude e il Paese acquisirebbe fiducia.

Insomma – in via ipotetica – è possibile per l’Italia un quadro macroeconomico senza l’euro e senza inflazione. Il default del Paese è una delle ipotesi ma fortunatamente non l’unica. Non bisogna dimenticare che al momento l’unico punto fuori discussione è che all’interno di una struttura dell’Europa così ordinata e di una politica economica e monetaria così bloccate, ben difficilmente andremo al di sopra di tassi di crescita da prefisso telefonico. Sic rebus stantibus l’economia italiana non ha futuro. I discorsi sulla conservazione dello status quo non ci portano fuori dalla situazione in cui ci troviamo. Un possibile differente esito, con o senza euro, non necessariamente dovrà essere disastroso, anzi potrà essere anche altamente positivo: la differenza sarà determinata dall’atteggiamento, dal coraggio e dalle capacità di un politica che fino ad oggi ha solo aumentato preoccupazioni e malcontento.

Well, actually, that depends. If you’re a Creative Cloud subscriber, chances are this app was just dropped in your lap for free. If you’re not, then Adobe has turned something of a cold shoulder to your plight… you can’t even buy it.

Lightroom Mobile — Adobe’s new addition to the family that brings many of the powerful RAW editing tools you’re used to on the desktop version to iOS — is finally official, and having seen a demo of it in action we have to say it’s also quite impressive.

The most common adjustments like Exposure, Contrast, Saturation, Clarity, Sharpening and so on and so forth are all available on the iPad version, and they’ve been implemented in such a way as to not take up all the precious little memory that your iPad boasts. Plus, the entire interface is built to be as touch friendly as possible, with swipes, taps and multi-touch gestures allowing you to do everything from flagging a photo to looking up metadata.

Pretty much everything that happens on Lightroom Mobile happens over the air using Smart Previews as the iOS app syncs seamlessly with the desktop version. You never have to work with a full-sized RAW file and all of the megabytes that entails; instead, Lightroom Mobile will create and show you Smart Previews of every image in the catalogs you choose to make available on mobile.

That, of course, comes with the caveat that you have to be online when you’re using the app, but if you know in advance that you’re going to be without Internet for any given time, you do have the option to download individual catalogs for offline editing.

All of the edits sync automatically with the desktop version almost the instant you make them, or in the case of offline editing, just as soon as you regain an Internet connection. And any photos that are being synced between the two versions will also be available to view in your web browser at lightroom.adobe.com.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t, and in fact isn’t meant to be, a replacement for the desktop version. There are features that are missing including, most conspicuously, the ability to sync your iPad with your SLR and pull files.

That’s why this is being branded as a “companion app,” because while it will definitely make your life easier when you’re traveling or you want to do some light editing on the couch at home, it won’t enable you to ditch your computer entirely.

It does, however, bring some minor additional functionality like instant sharing to social networks, a slideshow feature that lets you show off your work more easily and the ability to import directly from your Camera Roll in case you have some mobile photos you feel deserve the Lightroom treatment.

As we said at the top, Lightroom Mobile is available right away, but only if you have a Creative Cloud subscription. Members of the oft-renewed Photoshop Photography Program or subscribers with a CC Complete, CC Student and Teacher or CC for Teams Complete plan will all be able to download the app and start using it right away.

Compatibility for now is limited to iPad 2 and above running iOS 7 (coming soon to iPhone, with an Android version currently in the works). You’ll also need to update your current desktop version of Lightroom to 5.4.
