David Bowie — or at least his clothing — is set to arrive in Toronto this fall when his eponymous exhibition lands at the AGO.
Got a little stardust in your eyes? Are you just a lover of fashion? Good. You'll be able to soak in a little inspiration in the 300 some odd items from Bowie's personal collection. It's a mixed media show, with costumes from Bowie's golden years (such as Ziggy Stardust bodysuits), as well as several videos, photos and set designs. Get a full sense of the display here.
The exhibition comes shortly after the gallery featured the work of punk icon Patti Smith in Camera Solo, though there's no indication that the Bowie will be on hand during its run. Maybe we can get Diamond Rings as a stand in?
The AGO will be the first in North America to show the collection, which usually lives in London, England. There'll be plenty of time to take in the fame, as the exhibit will run from Sept. 25 until Nov. 27, 2013.

A couple from Ohio say they are indebted to actor John Malkovich who came to their aid in downtown Toronto, helping to save a life.

As our current mayor fends off allegations that he smokes crack, what’s the previous mayor up to? Oh, nothing much. Just being named the new president and CEO of WWF-Canada, is all.
David Miller, who decided not to run in the 2010 election, has, since the end of his term, been leading what appears to be a more relaxed existence. He’s kept his hand in local politics, though, by making frequent public appearances and by blogging for the Huffington Post. In 2011, he was the recipient of a “future of cities” fellowship at NYU.
But mainly what he’s been doing is working as international business and sustainability counsel at Aird & Berlis LLP, the law firm he was involved with before getting into politics.
This new gig with WWF-Canada, an NGO that advocates for environmental conservation, is of a piece with Miller’s politics (remember, this is the man who gave us the five-cent fee on plastic shopping bags, among many other environmental initiatives). A WWF-Canada spokesperson says the former mayor is winding down his duties at Aird & Berlis and will have his first day as president on September 3.
All of which makes us wonder what’s in store for Mayor Rob Ford after he’s done with municipal politics (assuming he’s ever done with municipal politics). It has been suggested to us that he’d be perfect as the owner of the Toronto Argonauts.

Good news for cyclists who use the official City trails in the Don Valley: barring weather-related disruptions, on June 1, you’ll no longer have to take alternate routes to detour around the construction of two shiny new metal bridges by Don Mills Road.
Last August, the City closed access to the Bailey Bridge crossing the CNR/GO train line east of Don Mills Road and the wooden walkway leading to it from Ernest Thompson Seton Park, as well as the connection in the park between the Don and Taylor Creek Ravine trails. The official City detour suggested a lengthy route through Thorncliffe Park and the Leaside Bridge [PDF], but many cyclists have used simpler, if not always legal, workarounds. Those options range from a worn dirt path leading to the mountain bike trails in Crothers Woods to sneaking through the construction fencing to cross the track at train level.
Now, a newly completed walkway replaces wood with steel, covered with an asphalt surface. The Bailey Bridge, meanwhile, has been refurbished with new railing and an anti-slip metal deck. (It was originally built in 1972.)
The project was scheduled to wrap up in March, but the unstable nature of the soil under the walkway caused problems. “Fill and crap” is how a Parks official described the mix of soil along the slope to us. While it was fine for supporting the old wooden structure, it wasn’t suitable for holding up steel.
Reinforcement of the walkway footings took place last week, leaving trail paving as the last major task to be performed before the structures open to cyclists on the first day of June.

torp3918What cutting analysis: "Ontario liquor store strike could leave drinkers in despair".

The prospect of a Victoria Day weekend liquor store strike in Ontario has been taken off the shelf after a deal was reached late Thursday night between the LCBO and its unionized workers.

If you're an avid user of PayPal, now would be a good time to take advantage of their Gear Up For Summer Fun promotion where you can earn 5% cash back on your purchases until June 30. Terms and conditions do apply and the 5% cash back rate only applies to your second purchase onward -- so you'll have to make an initial purchase with a lower rate first. Still, this is a good promotion if you happen to make a lot of purchases through PayPal. Other terms and conditions include a maximum of $20 back per purchase and a maximum of $200 total for the duration of the event. The two payout dates listed are July 8 and August 1. More information can be found here. Thanks to rebjorne for sharing this one with us! |
