Canada Post has announced today that their regular stamp prices will increase from $0.63 to a whopping  $1 per stamp, or 85 cents per stamp in a booklet or coil. The Permanent “P” stamps will be able to be used still but Canada Post are not going to be selling P Stamps anymore. Instead, the stamps will have the price listed on them again.

On March 31st, 2014 Canada Post plans to launch a tiered stamp pricing structure:

• New prices will be launched for the customers that buy stamps in booklets and coils. The price per stamp will be $0.85
• Business that use postage meters will pay discounted rate of $0.75 per stamp
• Mailers who prepare mail in a way that reduces processing costs (incentive lettermail) will benefit from prices lower than $0.75 per stamp
• Single stamps will cost a whopping $1 each!!

So stock up on stamps while you still can! The Permanent stamps currently being sold will still be usable when the price increases. Stop in at Costco and purchase bulk amounts! Costco is selling permanent stamps for $0.60 each ($59.99 for 100 stamps).

Canada Post also plans to eliminate their door-to-door delivery service. How messed up is that? Hey! Let’s increase our prices and reduce our services? I hear bankruptcy in their future, folks. Canada Post will start to phase out home delivery as part of their tiered structure. They will be converting their services to community mailboxes (wouldn’t surprise me if these come with  monthly fee). This will surely have a negative impact on their company, and not to mention the thousands of jobs lost when this is set in place.

When I see Cats following me on Tumblr / Goggle Cat

So, it’s not a rare occurrence to see a Cat start following me on Tumblr. Like, literally, a real Cat. How do I know that I actually have a following of real Cats on Tumblr? Because their user icon is that of a Cat. It would just be silly for a human to masquerade as a Cat on Tumblr.

One night, a particularly majestic Russian Blue started following me. In his photo, he had on a pair of Goggles that were so stylish, I couldn’t help but imagine what my GIFs would look like reflecting off of them. I suppose that most of my followers would be just as transfixed with my images as this Cat seems to have been.

While in the lavatory on a domestic flight in March 2010, I spontaneously put a tissue paper toilet cover seat cover over my head and took a picture in the mirror using my cellphone. The image evoked 15th-century Flemish portraiture. I decided to add more images made in this mode and planned to take advantage of a long-haul flight from San Francisco to Auckland, guessing that there were likely to be long periods of time when no one was using the lavatory on the 14-hour flight. I made several forays to the bathroom from my aisle seat, and by the time we landed I had a large group of new photographs entitled Lavatory Self-Portraits in the Flemish Style.

This hip school near Trinity Bellwoods Park lets you get to know each of their instructors online, and offers group ukulele and guitar classes and private banjo lessons, as well as regular private guitar lessons. Students of all ages are accepted. Drop in Saturday at 5pm for those group guitar sessions where all levels of experience are welcome.

ABC Academy of Music
Located at St Clair and Oakwood, ABC Academy of Music offers lessons for students of all ages, though the focus leans toward kids. They offer instruction for a wide range of instruments including electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and bass, starting with note reading, tab reading, and basic skills. They offer various camps and tutoring options for kids.

This year's World Press Photo exhibit is up at Brookfield Place for one more week. There's a good chance you've some of these photos already online — World Press Photo is "the world's largest and most prestigious annual press photography contest" — but to see them come alive in large scale in this traveling exhibition is to experience them in a new way.

As the selected photos are all winners and runners up in their field of photojournalism (sports action, contemporary issues, portraiture, etc), all photos in the free exhibit are striking: taken to tell stories and translate experiences, each photo in the exhibit will raise as many questions as it can answer. The strange, surreal world of bullfighting fascinates in full colour, while the most brutal shots are behind a section not visible to casual by-passers. When viewing the blood soaked floor beneath a pool table in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, onlookers didn't know if the photo was staged (it wasn't.) If you've been feeling the fall sads, you might need a stiff drink before heading past the "disturbing images" warnings.

Nature photos such as a bold close up of a huge southern cassowary bird and a Caribbean trumpet fish offer larger than life respite from human dramas. Yet there's a little bit of terror lurking everywhere: in one shot, trained monkey in Central Java wearing a doll's head looms up from the street: a little menacing, a little cute, a little troubling. In the portrait grouping Chinese artist Ai Weiwei holds a cell phone in the darkness for photographer Stefen Chow, as if to take a selfie on the camera's lens — or remind us to do a double take, and keep looking at what makes an image tell a story.
