Take Medical Supplies
We rely on travellers to transport suitcases to medical professionals in countries in need. Travellers include tourists, medical missions, faith missions, community developers, and business travellers.
One suitcase is sent with each volunteer tourist or business traveller. The suitcase is delivered by the traveller or picked up by the intended recipient.
For some destination countries, copies of a letter signed by a Canadian doctor are included in each suitcase advising customs officials that the traveler is transporting the medicine to a medical practitioner in the country of destination (This practice conforms to both Canadian and customs regulations of most countries to which Not Just Tourists delivers aid).

The stories of a unique bond between a child and their pet are as timeless as they come, but rarely does the pet have wings. Such is the case with photographer Cameron Bloom whose son Noah happened upon a baby magpie in 2013 when the family was out walking near their home in Newport, Australia. After consulting with a veterinarian, the family learned to raise the orphaned bird, who they affectionately named Penguin.
A year later, the curious bird has deeply integrated with the family. Despite being free to come and go outdoors, she always returns to the Bloom household where Cameron, his wife Sam, and their sons Rueben, Noah, and Oli eagerly await her return. On rare occasions, Penguin even shows off her adopted family to other magpies who have followed her inside the house.

Australian photographer Ray Collins first picked up a camera in 2007 and used it to photograph his friends surfing around his home after long shifts working in a nearby coal mine. His attention quickly shifted from his friends to patterns and forms he noticed in the waves. Collins, who is colorblind, was also drawn to the interplay of light and water, perhaps more attune to contrast than the nuance of color. He poetically refers to this switch from coal miner to fine art photographer as a balance between his “black life and blue life.”

The cruelty to animals captured on video at your facility is unconscionable and has no place in a civilized society—birds freezing to death during transport, animals dropped, thrown, and violently slammed upside down into metal shackles, and animals having their throats sliced open while still conscious and able to feel pain.
Please end this abuse!
As the biggest poultry producer in Canada, Maple Lodge Farms has the power, and the responsibility, to ensure that animals in its facilities are not tortured.
I am writing to ask Maple Lodge Farms to adopt meaningful animal welfare policies and oversight at its farms and slaughterhouses to end the needless suffering of millions of animals in its supply chain.
This policy should include:
- Phasing out conventional slaughter methods in favor of less cruel systems that eliminate the horrific suffering caused by dumping, shackling, shocking, and slitting the throats of conscious animals
- Prohibiting selective breeding of chickens for rapid growth, which often leads to crippling leg deformities
- Requiring supplier farms to provide birds with more space, clean litter, access to natural light, and environmental enrichments
- Ensuring that animals are not subjected to adverse heat, cold, or other extreme weather conditions during transport
These are common-sense changes that would greatly alleviate needless suffering for millions of animals. Many other leading food providers, including Nestlé, Costco, and Sodexo, have already taken action to address animal welfare in their supply chains. It is time for Maple Lodge Farms to do the same.
Please act quickly to end egregious animal abuse at your facilities and in your supply chain.
All Future Shop stores in Canada have closed, effective immediately.
The news was delivered simultaneously to employees across the country early Saturday morning as they were showing up for their shifts.
A select few outlets will be converted into Best Buy stores, but the rest — including the store in north London — will remain closed for good.
It wasn’t immediately clear what would become of the Future Shop on Wellington Road in the White Oaks-area, although there’s already a Best Buy across the street.
As of mid-Saturday morning, Future Shop’s website was unavailable, but a message on the company’s app informs users “Future Shop and Best Buy are consolidating under the Best Buy brand. That means, the products, services, and features you have come to expect from FutureShop.ca can be found at BestBuy.ca.”
It wasn’t immediately clear how many jobs would be lost as a result of Saturday’s store closures.
Future Shop was founded in 1982, and was purchased by Best Buy in 2001 for $580-million.
Until now, Best Buy continued to operate Future Shop as a separate division.
Steak, eggs, canned soup — all kinds of fridge and pantry staples have a best before date on the packaging. But that best before date may not mean what you think.
Artist Ellen Jewett refers to her sculptural work as “natural history surrealist sculpture,” a blend of plants, animals, and occasionally human-made structures or objects. Her artwork is deeply informed by an extensive background in anthropology, medical illustration, exotic animal care, and even stop-motion animation, all of which accentuate the biological structure of each piece, while freeing her imagination to pursue more abstract ideas.
Over time, Jewett has become more focused on minimizing materials and relying a negative space. “I find my sculptures are evolving to be of greater emotional presence by using less physical substance,” she shares. In addition, she eschews any potentially toxic mediums like paints, glazes, and finishes, opting to use more natural, locally-sourced materials. “This, unavoidably, excludes most of what is commonly commercially available, and has sent me on a journey of unique material combination and invention.” By employing these more uncommon materials, and leaving traces of fingerprints and other slight imperfections Jewett hopes her work leaves a more authentic impression.

The monocle looks like, well, a monocle. The container (pictured below) is a clear plastic wrapper with one metallic side.
We figure this product is a joke you tell with a prop. So, rather than having you open a new one every time you show it to a friend, you can just show off the clear back. That way, everyone can see that (yes really) there is a monocle in that suspicious little wrapper.

Yes! It will not fit quite as well as a fitted monocle. These really should only be used in emergency monocle situations, such as the one pictured on our promotional video.
After a bit of testing, we've found that the main factor in how easily the monocle sits on your face is how much your forehead protrudes. We theorize that this explains why monocles were most popular among Europeans, who have a large amount of Neanderthal DNA.

Risks and challenges
The main risk is that we've never done this before! Normally we just make books, for which the supply chains are quite simple. In this case, the process is a bit more involved.
That said, we have already prototyped out what the final piece will be. In fact, due to the nature of making products like this, we already have about a thousand on-hand from the sampling process. So, what you see will be what you get. And, unless something very surprising happens, we expect no complications in the production or shipping process.
If for any reason something does go wrong, it is our policy to maintain transparent communication regarding the status of the product.
We have one other project right now (Augie and the Green Knight), which we are currently fulfilling. All of the product work is done. We are simply waiting on the books to arrive at our warehouse to be mailed out.
These animal-filled porcelain bowls were meticulously crafted by hand and designed by Hella Jongerius for a commission by Nymphenburg, a Bavarian porcelain manufacture since the mid-18th century. The series was produced as a celebration of the animal collection found in their archives, and incorporates 3D creatures within the simple glazed bowls.
The ceramics display animals that look as if they have been temporarily and calmly placed upon the delicate bowls—curious foxes, birds, and miniature hippos happily plopped into their fragile environments. The displays are also hand painted with floral decorative patterns originally found on Nymphenburg’s cups and saucers, adding subtle detail to the glossed ceramic works. (via Jongeriuslab)
Asphyxia is an experimental film project by Maria Takeuchi and Frederico Phillips that explores human movement through motion capture technology. The team used two inexpensive Xbox One Kinect sensors to capture the movements of dancer Shiho Tanaka and then rendered the data inside a near photo-realistic environment. From their description of the project:
The project is an effort to explore new ways to use and/or combine technologies and different fields in an experiment without many of the common commercial limitations. The performance is centered in an eloquent choreography that stresses the desire to be expressive without bounds.
Motion data was captured using inexpensive sensors and that data paved the way through an extensive number of steps. Once all the scanned point cloud data was combined, that was then used as the base for the creative development on the piece. A series of iterative studies on styles followed and several techniques and dynamic simulations were then applied using a number 3D tools for various results.
Earlier this week photographer Jonathan Nimerfroh was walking along the coast of Nantucket when he noticed something odd about the waves crashing on shore. The high temperature was 19°F (-7.2°C) and while the waves weren’t completely frozen, they were thick with pieces of ice, much like the consistency of a Slurpee, or an slushy, or an ICEE, or whatever. It’s amazing to see how the ice changes the form and color of the waves, making them seem almost solid. You can see a few more shots over on Stay Wild Magazine. Origami artist and chemistry teacher Adam Tram folds some incredibly beautiful objects with paper. From dinosaurs and skeletons to flowers and warriors, it seems nothing is off limits to his folding abilities. While exploring the shores around St. Joseph, Michigan last week, photographer Joshua Nowicki stumbled onto a bizarre phenomenon: dozens of small sand towers rising out of the beach, some over a foot tall. The strange layered sand castles are formed when blasts of wind slowly erode layers of frozen sand, much like how a river might slowly create a canyon. Nowicki returned yesterday to shoot more photos, but found that sunny skies were enough to melt them away. You can see more of his photography here. (via EarthSky)
It's another beautiful -25 C day here in Toronto, the latest in a possibly record-breaking cold snap that appears set to go on and on and on for the rest of the month and into March and oh god, everything is terrible. But as you try to make the best of a gross situation by posting selfies of yourself bundled up to your eyebrows or covered in beardsicles, why not do something to help those most vulnerable to the weather?
That's the idea driving a new social media campaign, concieved by Torontonian Allie Kosela. Last week, she posted a be-parka-ed selfie tagged "#subzeroselfie" to Instagram, adding that she would be sending a cash donation to the Yonge Street Mission, which gives food and shelter to the homeless. The campaign is slowly gaining traction on social media, with over a dozen locals taking part; to get in on it yourself, it's as easy as taking a pic of your shivering self and donating to YSM online.
This video from La Confiserie CandyLabs in Montreal demonstrates the labor-intensive process of rolling traditional hard candy. Each design starts with colored and flavored strips of heated sugar which are precisely rolled together into an increasingly large log-like shape. Despite reaching a final diameter of nearly 6″, the form is then stretched impossibly thin to create hundreds of pieces of tiny hard candies. From start to finish the entire process takes about three hours, during which the candy (and candy maker) never stop moving for more than a few seconds. Washington-based artist Beth Cavener Stichter sculpts human-sized animals from clay and other materials in both dramatically overt and subtly ambigous displays of emotion. Hung from ropes or pinned to walls, the anthropomorphic sculptures are infused with juxtapositions that depict the extremes of both human emotion and animalistic behavior: predator and prey, love and hate, fear and peace. “On the surface,” shares Stichter, “these figures are simply feral animals suspended in a moment of tension. Beneath the surface, they embody the consequences of human fear, apathy, aggression, and misunderstanding.”
Stichter collaborates with a variety of artists in her work, including Alessandro Gallo, who designed and painted the ornate Japanese tattoos on the nineteen-foot long anaconda snake depicted in Tangled Up in You seen below. Unfortunately it's not possible to add support for those launchers at this time due to how those launchers handle icon packs. The icon pack will work for Next Launcher (manual apply only as stated in the description) but you'll need to email us to fix the icons for loading in that launcher.
Nice but... Very nice icons, and having paid for them I use them all the time. However, certain icons revert to the original and I have to reload axis 2-3 times a day. I have renewed these icons up from the drawer but they still revert.

Great just missing some core icons I felt like this was money well spent the icons are beautiful but I can't seem to find ones for: 8sms (Stock Messaging), Microsoft Lync, Moxier Mail, Overlook Fing. If I overlooked these please let me know sometimes it's hard to find them without labels.
Simply amazing! This is the easily the best money I've ever spent on the play store.. Its simply beautiful. I would love the addition of the Scotia bank app, Canada post app, and Yatse xbmc remote app.

The most complete icon pack! I normally don't use icon packs because they only have the typical icons (phone, agenda, etc), however this one has over 800! So far all my apps are supported. They all look nice and colorful. The moderator keeps updating icons on a weekly basis. He responded within minutes when I emailed him. Very dedicated person. Definitely support this guy.

The Samsung Galaxy Note II is a big, big phone in more ways than one. True, it is one of the largest handsets you can buy, but the new dimensions make it an easier device to use day in and day out. Unlike the original, I found I was used to the size after a few days. It’s still difficult to use one-handed, however, and for some that might be a deal breaker.
The Verizon variant of the Note II is probably the best of the bunch. It has all the same features, but surpasses the performance of the AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile versions in the key areas of voice quality and data speeds.
The software and tools are robust, the media powers second-to-few, the camera and video camera excellent, and the cool features of the S Pen and its associated software are much improved over the original Note.
For the consumer seeking to merge their smartphone and tablet into one device, the Note II is certainly the first device to get the formula (mostly) right.

NOTES: A poll from Forum Research shows that on a value-for-money basis, building an LRT network in Scarborough is more popular across the city than a four-stop subway extension by a two-to-one margin. This hypothetical 30-stop LRT network, which would cost the same as the subway proposal, comes from a recent Toronto Star column in which Edward Keenan used an apples-to-apples comparison to identify the transit opportunities Toronto would miss out on by pursuing its current plan.
In the Forum poll, LRTs won out over subways by 23 percentage points in Scarborough, proving that it’s not always about what kind of transit technology you offer, but the kind of planning and access you provide. While LRTs have proved consistently popular in polls over the past year or so, there is one demographic that light rail cannot seem to win over: risk-averse politicians.
