Chocolatexture: A Series of Chocolates to Represent Japanese Words For Texture Created by Nendo

Japanese design office Nendo has created 9 different types of chocolate. While each are the same size, not a single piece from the Chocolatexture collection look alike. That’s because Oki Sato, who leads the Tokyo and Milan-based firm, rethought the concept of chocolate by focusing on texture. “There are many factors that determine a chocolate’s taste,” says Sato, referring to factors like the origin of cocoa, the percentage used, and the various different flavors. But by instead turning his attention to attributes like pointy, smooth and rough, the designer has created distinctive chocolates that all use identical ingredients but taste completely different due to the various textures.

Each of the 9 chocolates were inspired by an onomatopoeic word from the Japanese language that describes texture. The chocolates correspond with words like “toge toge” (sharp pointy tips), “sube sube” (smooth edges and corners) and “zara zara” (granular, like a file). Chocolatexture was created for the Maison & Objet trade fair currently taking place this week in Paris. 400 limited edition Chocolatexture sets were created and will be sold during the event in Paris at what’s being dubbed the “Chocolatexture lounge.” (syndicated from Spoon & Tamago)

by turecepcja

Niyoko Ikuta born 1953 is a Kyoto-based artist whose work has been much acclaimed ever since she started exhibiting in the early 1980s. Her work has been collected by numerous Japanese museums and is also represented in the USA by institutions such as the Corning Museum of Glass.

In 1980 I began making artwork by laminating sheets of glass using adhesive and exposing the cross sections. My motifs are derived from feelings of gentleness and harshness, fear, limitless expansion experienced through contact with nature, images from music, ethnic conflict, the heart affected by joy and anger, and prayer.

In creating my pieces it is like imagining an architectural space when viewing blueprints, deciding on an image by reading into the intentions of the architect, or imbuing a space with dynamic energy to bring it to life. I am nervous when placing my finished work of art in a specific space, but I also enjoy it. via

Crescent Rhea Occults Crescent Saturn Cassini Imaging TeamSSIJPL, ESA,

Soft hues, partially lit orbs, a thin trace of the ring, and slight shadows highlight this understated view of the majestic surroundings of the giant planet Saturn. Looking nearly back toward the Sun, the robot Cassini spacecraft now orbiting Saturn captured crescent phases of Saturn and its moon Rhea in color a few years ago. As striking as the above image is, it is but a single frame from a 60-frame silent movie where Rhea can be seen gliding in front of its parent world. Since Cassini was nearly in the plane of Saturn's rings, the normally impressive rings are visible here only as a thin line across the image center.

After a long period of pummeling wind, snow, and ice, weather photographer Marko Korosec sensed an opportunity to climb Mount Javornik, part of a mountain range in eastern Slovenia and the location of a popular ski center. What he discovered can only be described as otherworldly. Trees and lookout towers fully encased in hard layers of rime ice, formed by high winds and freezing fog. Korosec says some of the ice spikes growing off the tower reached well over 3-feet (100cm) long. To see more of his weather photography and additional images from this shoot, head over to his 500px page. All photos courtesy the photographer.

Philippe Charles Jacquet is not simply a painter of landscapes; he is a creator.  Jacquet has mastered the ability to combine what is real and what is imagined. As a result, his compositions, heavily inspired by Brittany coasts and estuaries, have an element of the sublime and register deeply with the subconscious.  Although he paints sparse landscapes there is something fundamentally pleasing in the surreal, idealized quality of his work.

Jacquet was trained as an architect at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs.  After pursuing his career in architecture, he decided to dedicate himself solely to painting and has been doing so for six years. One can detect his background in architecture in his heavily symmetrical, geometric landscapes.  However, he successfully offsets the very calculated appearance of architectural compositions with rich colors and an intriguing variety of surfaces ranging from glass-like water to rusted, flaking hulls of barges.

Jacquet is entirely self-taught and his painting technique undoubtedly sets him apart from other artists.  Working in gloss paint, an industrial medium, he begins by painting his plywood surface with a uniform base of an off-white color.  This medium allows him to achieve remarkably smooth surfaces.  Each area of the composition is approached differently; sometimes textures are created using several transparent layers while others are achieved through the use of a razor blade to scratch away at the surface.

Jacquet takes extra care when approaching the houses that often appear in his paintings.  He builds, rather than paints these structures, often composing them on paper and later transferring them onto the backdrop.  They effectively serve as reminders of a human presence in these expansive, dream-like landscapes.

Jacquet currently lives and works in Pantin, a suburb north of Paris, where he ran an exhibition hall.  He has exhibited in solo and group shows throughout France. Notably, he won first prize at the Plastic Arts Exhibition at Melun.  Axelle Fine Arts is delighted to offer the work of Philippe Charles Jacquet to the American market.

Save 66% on DG2: Defense Grid 2 on Steam

torp3918

$9.51

Defense Grid 2 improves so much on the original, it's amazing.

I'll start off with the sole negative and that is the game sorely needs a "mute" button so you don't have to listen to the AI's. I'm OK with listening to them the 1st, 2nd or even 3rd time, but when I'm banging my head against the proverbial wall, I finally just gave up & put my headphones on my desk instead of listening to them while I'm trying Level 12 incursion for the 14th time.

Now that I have THAT out of the way, this game is just simply unbelievably awesome.

Some people will say "why on earth would I want to pay $24 for a TD game?"

This game has so much variety, it extends the gameplay 20x over a simple playthrough. While it does this through game variants like frozen core, or grinder and a handful of others, it has several different difficulties ranging from easy, normal, hard & elite. Then compound that with competitive, or competitive sell and I don't even want to do the math to say how many different ways you can play this game.

Then you have the entirely new tower upgrade system which will give you another 10-30 different powers PER TOWER to enhance tower abilities. These tower upgrades drop every time you complete a round and really change the landscape, literally. Where gun towers are uniformly weak on the first few levels, after you've completed the game, you're going to have some unreal deadly gun towers with abilities like ignore shields, or shield busters. Likewise with laser, target strongest enemy is a huge boost to not only survival but score as well.

Each of these tower upgrades come in levels, so the first level might not seem that big but when you've got an Inferno that lights everything on fire & anything they in turn touch will cause others to get lit with 20% damage, you know you've got something special.

This skill enhancement can make a level that was really tough the first time around, something really enjoyable the 2nd time around as you're able to contemplate entirely new strategies for how to employ an array of towers.

As you get the score boost ability, thinking of how to soften everything up so that they fall into your kill zone (where you want 2 or even 3 score boost towers as their sphere of influence is rather small) to maximize your score can change with every iteration as you get new gun upgrades or obtain new special AI abilities. Because score is tied to resources, if you can avoid using one of the special weapons to kill things, you can employ the resource generator to give you even more resources to maximize score.

Yes, you heard me, special weapons. Where before in DG1 you had the laser that you could employ, in DG2 you have about 8 special weapons (one for each AI in the campaign) so you can pick and choose and see which one fits your play-style.

The ability to use your WASD keys to move around & look at things from different angles is a nice touch. As is the toggle "F" to fast forward (in DG1, you had to hold that sucker down all the time).

I'm really looking forward to the creativity of people who create & sell levels using the free DG Architect. This will extend the game for a long time. Want some new variety? Visit the store! While I think the current pricing is a bit steep at $1.99 per level (I think $0.99 would be better), remember, you're not just buying one new level, you're buying about 20 with all the variants listed above.

This game is phenomenal. I'll be putting a lot more hours into this! Highly and I mean Highly recommended.

When it comes to fancy studio portraits of pets, it’s no surprise people are willing to hire photographers for loving photos of their cats and dogs, we’ve even seen cameras thoughtfully trained on chickens and exotic snakes, but commercial photographer Kevin Horan decided it was high time for an artistically neglected group of barnyard animals to step into the spotlight: goats and sheep. In 2007, Horan moved from Chicago to Whidbey Island, Washington where he approached a neighbor about photographing one of his sheep. The neighbor agreed and his portrait series Chattel was born.

Lately, Horan photographs mostly sheep and goats from the New Moon Farm Goat Rescue in Arlington, WA, where he sets up a portable studio and works with assitants to achieve surprisingly emotive and humorous portraits that reveal the subtle personality of each animal. The wildly popular series was selected in Photolucida’s Critical Mass Top 50 for 2014, and one of the photos was acquired by the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Prints are available upon request. Tim Hortons Prices To Rise Next Week

by FallenPixels
Coffee_and_doughnut_at_Tims

News broke recently that Tim Hortons would be hiking prices in the coming months, but it looks like this will be sooner than most people thought.

Starting next Wednesday, prices for coffee and breakfast sandwiches will rise.  Drink prices will rise by an average of $0.10 while most breakfast sandwiches will increase by a similar amount.  Ontario will not see a rise in breakfast sandwich costs at this time while coffee will increase in all provinces.

Tim Hortons has already lost the business of many SmartCanucks members, will this price increase send you looking for a cheaper cup of coffee?

What's going on with cat cafes in Toronto?

by Aubrey Jax

Cat cafes torontoToronto's cat cafe wars appear to have curled up on top of the fridge (how did they get up there?) and fallen into a light snooze. Meanwhile, Montreal, that dirty alley stray of a town, has celebrated the opening of its first cat cafe. What's the deal? As with so many other things in Toronto, it's the city's landlords throwing a dog into the cat condo.

If this happened a couple of lives ago for you, much fuss was made in the spring about the race to be Toronto's first cat cafe (a business where customers can grab a cup o' joe and a belly scratch from an adoptable kitty). There was Smitten Kitten Cafe, then Pet Me Meow, who even hosted a pop up shop in the early summer. Both cafes predicted a fall opening, but it looks like Toronto will have to amuse itself a little while longer. May I suggest a ball with a bell inside.

SMITTEN KITTEN / KITTY CAT CAFE

Smitten Kitten decided to change their name to Kitty Cat Cafe early on. On further changes, Jen Morozowich tells us her business partner Jeff Jarvis "found love and has decided not to move from Halifax." Yes, you little entrepreneurs, pounce on this: Morozowich is seeking a new partner in the cat cafe game. She tells us: "Yes! I am looking for a partner who has the same passion about the business as I do."

While Morozowich says working with the city and health board has been "the easiest part," it's our landlords who are anti-kitty cafe. "Landlords have been a challenge. They are either not accepting of the concept or they are fearful of allergies. Most buildings In Toronto have apartments above them. Landlords are worried about the ventilation system - I am now looking at purchasing a building."

While Kitty Cat Cafe's crowdfunding didn't meet its goal, Morozowich is not too worried. "I wasn't depending on it exclusively. Worst case scenario, if the cat cafe does not open (but it will), I will refund contributors donations. Everyone has been so wonderful. The fans of kitty cat cafe are so encouraging and patient. I want to thank them for their continued support." Best of luck, potential Kitty Cat Cafe compatriots.

Cat Cafe torontoPET ME MEOW

Speaking with Pet Me Meow, the same problem immediately arises. The city has been amendable, but Toronto landlords do not want live cats, even adorable adoptable cutie pie kitties in need who have all their shots, in their spaces.

"The main challenges that we've faced is really the availability of cat-friendly commercial space." Ashkan Rahimi and Jeff Ro tell us. "We have a very particular vision of what we want Pet Me Meow to look like - and how it should be so that our cats are safe and comfortable in the cafe - and we refuse to stray away from it just for the sake of opening. From the beginning Ashkan and I have been focused on "doing it right."

Pet Me Meow has already homed 10 cats through their pop up and crowdfunding campaign, and while the timeline has changed, they don't intend to stop.

If you want to help out finding a space, Ro and Rahimi are still hoping for the west end but are open to any opportunity that allows them to see their vision realized. "We'd ideally like to find a space that was already a food & beverage occupancy previously. We found that landowners don't like changing the occupancy of their unit."
