Episode 309 - Anti Anti-Racist (w/ Norman Finkelstein)

Tom Roche

excellent as usual

Briahna speaks with writer and professor Norman Finkelstein about the latest scandal involving famed “anti-racism” advocate Ibram X Kendi. Financial mismanagement at BU is just the tip of the iceberg as Finkelstein applies his close reading of Kendi’s work to the current crisis. As interesting as “what’s going on” is the question of how did Kendi even get to a place where he was considered a leading scholar? Does his scholarship have anything to offer? And is “Wokeness” at the root of this?

Radio War Nerd EP 398 — Drone Warfare in Ukraine War (Pt. 2), feat. Samuel Bendett

by mail@yashalevine.com (Gary Brecher)
Tom Roche

Interesting and informative interview, marred by the guest's presentation, the guest's neoliberal-deepstate connections, and the limiting of the discussion to air-drones (as opposed to other domains--more below):

1. Samuel Bendett is continuously and consistently stan-ing Ukraine, the AFU, and US empire military development and logistics. He fails (IIRC) to even mention the fact that Russia has not only massively expanded air-drone use, but also production and development, but that in recent months AFRF air-drone usage and results has significantly overtaken that of NATO-AFU.

2. From a cursory websearch, Samuel Bendett is obviously 100% Clintonian deepstate: see (e.g.) [his CNA bio](https://www.cna.org/our-experts/bendett-samuel) (archived [here](http://web.archive.org/web/20230905045148/https://www.cna.org/our-experts/bendett-samuel)), which mentions that Bendett is also a senior fellow @ [CNAS](https://inthesetimes.com/article/center-new-american-security-cnas-kamala-harris-foreign-policy-2020) (Marcetic's excellent article archived [here](http://web.archive.org/web/20230708081255/https://inthesetimes.com/article/center-new-american-security-cnas-kamala-harris-foreign-policy-2020)). You'll smell the connection throughout the interview. Bendett also very much sounds (and, from his profile photo, looks Russian-Jewish) like a Russian emigre, so I'm guessing one can color him Weaponized Immigrant.

3. The interview unfortunately (possibly merely to constrain timelength, though RWN episodes have in the past gone waaay longer) is pretty much all about air-drones. There are some /very/ brief mentions of land, water-surface/boat, and water-subsurface/sub drones, but very little.

So definitely listen and learn, but be aware of constraints on the interests (material, political, and intellectual) of the guest.

Neo-colonialists are 'pillaging Africa': At UN, Burkina Faso blasts Western hypocrisy

The Naked Week with Andrew Hunter Murray

Tom Roche

SINGULAR! host Andrew Hunter Murray is /very/ funny, but you will hear the fingerprints (? yes, you can :-) of Jon Holmes all over this mix of jokes, short bits, and audio collage before they tell you JH produced and directed. (I listened twice, was just as good the second time.) Granted, it's totally UK-centric, and the BBC is delaying content to this feed (this ep was originally broadcast 1 Sep 2023) in order to give Sounds priority, but still ... this is so good it almost makes up for the dogshit-days-of-summer FNCs from Catherine Bohart and Dom Joly. Next week, back to News Quiz!

The sixth of our satirical specials this summer. From The Skewer’s Jon Holmes comes The Naked Week, a fresh way of dressing the week’s news in the altogether and parading it around for everyone to laugh at. Host Andrew Hunter Murray (No Such Thing As A Fish, QI Elf, Private Eye) will strip away the curtain and dive into not only the big stories, but also at the way in which the news is packaged and presented. From award-winning writers and a crack team of contemporary satirists - and recorded in front of a live audience - The Naked Week delivers a (consensual) topical news nude straight to your ears. An unusual production for BBC Radio 4.

In 2019, Clint Eastwood's RICHARD JEWELL took aim at two institutions — the FBI and the media — that were supposed to save America from Trumpism. Tom Roche

consistently EXCELLENT, yet again. OK, I could quibble with EJ's anti-Iranian lowkey-hysteria and her overoptimism regarding the Republican voter base returning to economic sanity, ... but I won't, today.

Ryan and Emily discuss Hunter Biden receiving $250k from a Chinese business to his father's address, Joe Biden's visit to the UAW picket line, Trump's speech at a non union auto company, judge rules Trump defrauded banks with real estate empire, new information on Iran's influence peddling in Washington, JP Morgan settles Epstein case in Virgin Islands, FTC sues Amazon for monopolistic practices, imminent government shutdown, GOP voters realignment, and Toby Green joins to discuss how Covid lockdowns impacted Africa.

9/22/23: Murdoch Steps Down As Fox Chairman, Sound of Freedom Sexual Misconduct Allegations, Pope Knew Early About Holocaust, Obesity and Cardiac Death Rising, Partisan Futures, Spencer Snyder on Impossible Surviving on Minimum Wage

Tom Roche

This BP weekly (for week of M 18 Sep 2023) roundup and partners is 5 marginal (listenable but not great) segments, followed by an excellent segment#=6:

1. News Corp succession as Rupert Murdoch transitions from Chairman to Chairman Emeritus
2. Tim Ballard (aka "real life hero" of 'Sound of Freedom' movie) alleged sexual misconduct, and the lots of evidence behind those allegations
3. Vatican archive letters show German priest reported Dec 1942 re death camps to Pope Pius XII (who did nothing, whether he knew or not)
4. US obesity, cardiac/heart disease, and mortality statistics
5. Pew polling shows once again that Americans believe US politics suck; Ryan and Emily consider how this is misinterpreted by "magic centrists" esp No Labels
6. Spencer Snyder looks (quite breezily/cursorily, but usefully) at spatial variation of minimum wages vs costs-of-living, both in US states and countries globally

This week we look at Rupert Murdoch stepping down as Fox Chairman, the "real life hero" based on Sound of Freedom under investigations for sexual misconduct, letters reveal that The Pope knew the Holocaust was beginning to occur and did nothing about it, Obesity and cardiac arrest deaths rising in the US, Ryan and Emily look at people feeling bleak about the future on both sides, and Spencer Snyder looks at how it's impossible to live on the current minimum wage.

9/25/23: Democrats Freak Over Trump Plus 10 Poll, WGA Strike Reach Agreement, Biden Picket with UAW, Nazi Honored In Canadian Parliament, Shutdown Politics, Menendez Pulls Race Card, Bachelor For Olds, Legalized Bribery, Anti Racist Grifter

Tom Roche

{mostly EXCELLENT, better than usual-for-the-past-month-or-2} BP. Segments in order of presentation:

+ WGA reaches good-looking-but-tentative agreement with Big Entertainment
- another horserace-polling segment: Biden vs Trump, months before even the primaries much less the /Nov 2024/ US presidential election--can we please /not/ do this?
+ Biden and Trump vs US labor esp UAW strike
+ shredding {Corporate Party, Big Auto} lies about car pricing
+ Ukraine Nazis celebrated by US empire, esp Canadian parliament gives Zelensky and a (still unfortunately not decorating a gallows) literal Ukrainian SS volunteer
+ US-government-shutdown politics, esp Matt Gaetz vs Maria Bartiromo
+ TV viewership esp cable getting much older, networks now catering to that audience (e.g., new The Golden Bachelor)
+ KB on how SCOTUS et al legalized bribery in US, currently exemplified by Bob Menendez and Clarence Thomas
+ SE on identity-politics grift, esp mass layoffs at Boston University's [Center for Antiracist Research](https://www.bu.edu/antiracism-center/) (founded and still directed by Ibram X. Kendi) after burning through 43 M$ since Jun 2020. Esp goodness: segment doesn't paywall Krystal's response.

Krystal and Saagar discuss the WGA reaching a tentative agreement after striking for almost 150 days, Democrats freak over Trump plus 10 over Biden poll, Biden to join the picket line at UAW in historic move, UAW President Shawn Fain shreds the Big 3's lies on Car prices, a literal former SS Nazi was honored by Zelensky in the Canadian parliament, Matt Gaetz fights with Maria Baritromo on the politics of the government shutdown, cable TV caters to it's remaining audience with The Golden Bachelor for elderly viewers, Krystal looks at the legalized bribery established by recent examples in SCOTUS and Senator Menendez, and Saagar looks into how Ibram Kendi's Anti Racism center is collapsing under the grift.

* Colorado politics, esp Lauren Boebert's latest hijinks, and the strangely-grotesque hybrid that is Jared Polis
* Hasan Minhaj's standup lies revealed
* neoliberal Anglophone media promotes Russell Brand scandal. Here I gotta say, The Guys are waaay too credulous: for a much better/fairer discussion, checkout the 1st (of 3) segments of Glenn Greenwald's 19 Sep 2023 show (video [here](https://rumble.com/v3j40sl-new-russell-brand-accusations-deserve-scrutiny-and-due-process-system-updat.html), audio [here](https://traffic.megaphone.fm/RUMBLE2601335005.mp3))
* Fetterman vs Senate dresscode
* more sex in US politics! esp Kristi Noem and Susanna Gibson
* stealthy F-35 gets lost in South Carolina
* Mitt Romney's retirement whine summarizes Corporate Party's discontents
* how said Corporate Party (esp Romney's esp Corporate Republicans) destroyed US economy and politics
* ... and elite dismay generally at the ends of their empire and world

We cover a spurt of stories about politicians being horny, starting with of course Lauren Boebert’s broadway handy. Then, have you seen this plane?: the air force loses an F-35 somewhere in South Carolina. Finally, we have a reading series on Mitt Romney’s self-mythologizing retirement announcement that eventually morphs into a rumination on the fate of empires. Get bonus content on Patreon

Four of the six new BRICS countries - Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE - are in the Middle East. What does this mean for the region, for multipolarity, for the Cold War between the US and China and for the future of the Saudi-Iran rivalry? How does a country like Saudi Arabia, which has such a long record in service of the West, fit in? How might it impact Israel? How will Washington react now and what does it mean for the “geostrategic control” that they’ve spent decades, and multiple wars, trying to secure?

To discuss this and other regional developments, Rania Khalek was joined by Giorgio Cafiero, the CEO of Gulf State Analytics, a Washington, DC-based geopolitical risk consultancy.

Chinese balloon was NOT spying, US gov't admits months after fake crisis

Tom Roche

VERY EXCELLENT dissection of the "Chinese spy balloon" fraud/comedy, and how the US deepstate is now admitting as such, but only in the depths of US corporate-funded media. Ends with /very/ important (unfortunately not-well-known-enough) advice that 'extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence'.

The Pentagon admitted that a Chinese balloon that crossed into US territory in February 2023 was not spying; it was likely blown off course by wind. But Ben Norton shows how Washington and the media milked this manufactured scandal as ridiculous cold war propaganda. As Biden Taps Billionaire Dem to Oversee Ukraine's Business, More Insiders Are Enriched From the War. PLUS: Gabor Mate on the Explosion of Anti-Depressants in the West | SYSTEM UPDATE #148

Tom Roche

EXCELLENT 1st segment on US-EU (mostly US) corruption in Ukraine, and the likelihood this will increase under new Biden "redevelopment czar" Penny Pritzger. 2nd segment is weaker: it's good on

+ the increase in mental depression in the Global West, esp the US
+ problems with relying on Big Pharma antidepressants to treat that

but weak on the merely-asserted claim (most directly by Greenwald, Maté seems cagier) that mental depression can't or shouldn't (they go back and forth) be treated as a biochemical problem. Humans are physical, in the sense that we're composed of matter and energy, so ultimately /all/ human behavior is driven by physical (which in this context also includes chemical, biological, etc) causes. One can argue that, since we know very little about the biochemistry of mental illness, it can be more productive to treat mental or social states; but ultimately, such states cause mental (and all other forms of) illness by affecting us physically.

As Dom attempts to get to the bottom of the biggest stories of the week, he challenges experts and makes calls to the wrong people about the wrong thing, often at the wrong time. Best known for Trigger Happy TV which reinvented the hidden camera format, Dom actually has a degree in politics and is a former diplomat. He once stood against Alan Clarke in the 1997 general election. So make no mistake, in Dom Joly Breaks the News, Dom’s asking serious questions about that week's actual news. Stack Abuse: Getting Today's Date in YYYY-MM-DD in Python

Tom Roche

good/quick {intro to, reminder for} `datetime`, plus pointed me at the interesting external [Pendulum](https://pendulum.eustace.io/) library

Introduction

Whether you're logging events or measuring execution times, you'll often find yourself working with dates. In Python, the built-in datetime module makes it easy to get the current date and time, format it, or even do time math. In this Byte, we'll focus on how to get today's date and format it in the YYYY-MM-DD format.

Dates and Times in Python

Python provides the datetime module in its standard library for dealing with dates and times. This module includes several classes for managing dates, times, timedeltas, and more. The two classes we'll be focusing on in this Byte are datetime and date.

The datetime class is a combination of a date and a time, and provides a wide range of methods and attributes. The date class, on the other hand, is solely concerned with dates (year, month, and day).

Here's a quick example of how you can create a datetime object:

from datetime import datetime

# create a datetime object
dt = datetime(2023, 9, 19, 23, 59, 59)

print(dt)  # Output: 2023-09-19 23:59:59

In this snippet, we're creating a datetime object for the last second of Sept. 19th, 2023. But how do we get the current date?

Getting Today's Date in Python

Python's datetime module provides a method called today() that returns the current date and time as a datetime object. Here's how you can use it:

from datetime import datetime

# get today's date
today = datetime.today()

print(today)  # Output: 2023-09-19 22:17:08.845750

In the above example, the today() method returned the current date and time. However, if you only need the date, you can use the date() method of a datetime object to get a date object:

from datetime import datetime

# get today's date
today = datetime.today().date()

print(today)  # Output: 2023-09-19

Formatting Date as YYYY-MM-DD

The date and datetime objects provide a method called strftime() that allows you to format the date and time in various ways. The strftime() method takes a format string where each %-prefixed character is replaced with data from the date and time.

To format a date in the YYYY-MM-DD format, you can use the %Y, %m, and %d format codes:

from datetime import datetime

# get today's date
today = datetime.today().date()

# format date as YYYY-MM-DD
formatted_date = today.strftime('%Y-%m-%d')

print(formatted_date)  # Output: 2023-09-19

In the format string, %Y is replaced with the four-digit year, %m is replaced with the two-digit month, and %d is replaced with the two-digit day.

Note: The strftime() method returns a string, so you can't use date methods or attributes on the result. If you need to manipulate the date after formatting it, keep a reference to the original date or datetime object.

And that's it! You now know how to get today's date in Python and format it in the YYYY-MM-DD format.

Other Ways to Get Today's Date

While the datetime module is a powerful tool for working with dates and times in Python, it's not the only way to get today's date. Let's explore some other methods.

One alternative is using the time module, another built-in Python module for dealing with time. Here's how you can use it to get today's date:

import time

today = time.strftime("%Y-%m-%d")
print(today) # Output: 2023-09-19

When you run this code, you'll get the current date output in the 'YYYY-MM-DD' format. The strftime method formats the time according to the given format string.

Note: While the time module can give you the current date, it does not have as many date and time manipulation capabilities as the datetime module. It's generally better to use datetime for more complex date and time tasks.

Another option is to use an external library, like pendulum. Pendulum is a Python library that simplifies and enhances date handling, even beyond what's available in datetime.

Here's how you can get today's date with pendulum:

import pendulum

today = pendulum.now().to_date_string()
print(today) # Output: 2023-09-19

This will also give you the current date in the 'YYYY-MM-DD' format. The now method gets the current date and time, and the to_date_string method formats it as a string.

Note: Remember that pendulum is not a built-in module, so you'll need to install it using pip (pip install pendulum) before you can use it.

Conclusion

We've covered a variety of ways to get today's date in Python and format it as 'YYYY-MM-DD'. We started off with the basics of dates and times in Python, then moved on to getting today's date using the datetime module. We also looked at how to format the date in the 'YYYY-MM-DD' format. Finally, we explored some other methods for getting the current date, using both the built-in time module and the external pendulum library.

World War Civ 23: The Rise and Fall of the Gold Standard, 1873-1914

Tom Roche

Justin is clearly "out of his depth" here, but he and Dave still produce an entertaining and informative episode

Was the collapse of the international gold standard – established in 1873 – in 1914, a sure sign that war was coming? Was gold a “peaceful metal”, as Michael Hudson has argued? Does the history of finance and money, tied up with states and war, provide a theory of everything? We go way back to … Continue reading "World War Civ 23: The Rise and Fall of the Gold Standard, 1873-1914"
