Stuart Mitchell's Cost of Dying

Tom Roche

Stuart Mitchell EXCELLENT as usual--consistently funny, great oneliners, just too short (14:31 inc intro and outro)

This first episode takes a cheeky look at the costs of end of life care and you might be surprised to find out just how pricey it is to pop your clogs!

When it seems like everything is getting more expensive; comedian, former banker and serial funeral-organiser Stuart Mitchell breaks down the true Cost of Dying. Using his own experience Stuart aims to find out if can we even afford to kick the bucket? You’ll learn so much about the hidden costs of dying, you may well decide not to bother doing it!

EXCELLENT as usual

In 1994, Hong Kongers were counting down to the looming Mainland handover. But some of them were also counting down to the expiry date on a can of pineapples. We discuss Wong Kar-wai's CHUNGKING EXPRESS (1994), a quintessentially Hong Kong movie with universal resonance. Why isn't Egypt doing more to help the Palestinians?

Tom Roche

EXCELLENT, exc
+ discusses Egypt geopolitics, economy, etc--much more than just Palestine/Hamas relations
- /much/ too short

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is coming under increasing pressure to take a stronger stance on the atrocities unfolding in Gaza. It has take the Egyptian leader months to condemn Israel's actions and he has held firm to the view that Egypt “will not be a gateway for the displacement of the Palestinian people”.  A $USD35 billion gas deal with Israel may hold some clues to the complicated relationship between the two countries.

959 - The Bopper’s Lair (8/11/25)

Tom Roche

EXCELLENT to hear Matt Christman again (even though he's definitely /not/ back to pre-stroke MC)

We begin by reading the last will and testament of Anas al-Sharif, a 28-year-old journalist for Al-Jazeera that was among those slain in Gaza by Israel yesterday. We then resume our Epstein coverage, including a look at his Manhattan lair and celebrity dinner guests. Then, two pieces on venture capitalists driven insane by The Computer and a story by Pamela Paul on conservative women…with careers? The Dig: Chicago’s Left Experiment

Tom Roche

Unfortunately, this live show (date unstated--) on Chicago politics is self-sabotaged by waaay too much rant/venting compared to the too-small amount of analysis of the wins, losses, and future of the left in Chicago.

The 1st hour (audio length=120 min inc ads and self-promotion) is esp broken, esp by Alderwoman Jeanette Taylor's doing the sassy-older-black-woman shtick. That being said, Taylor does raise (in the 2nd hour) the claim that major reasons why the anti-homelessness 'Bring Chicago Home' proposal/referendum lost was black/Latino friction after the 2023-2024 migration crisis, esp the left refusal to put a Sanctuary City item on the referendum. This allowed anti-BCH forces (esp in real estate, which would have been slightly taxed) to portray BCH as about housing migrants.

After that, there's a discussion on crime and policing that tapdances around the fact that middleclass minorities (like middleclass whites) want the underclass policed, too.

Featuring Alex Han, Asha Ransby-Sporn, and alderwoman Jeanette Taylor on Chicago’s left political experiment. In the wake of Zohran’s remarkable victory in New York, organizers all over the country are taking a close look at Chicago under Mayor Brandon Johnson. A Chicago Teachers Union leader elected in 2023, Johnson’s win was the culmination of years of militant labor and social movement struggle. But while much has been achieved, Johnson and his allies have also suffered many defeats — and the mayor’s approval ratings are alarmingly low. In this episode, three long-time local organizers, including a socialist member of city council, analyze the state of the Left’s bid for governing power and what broader lessons it holds. Recorded live in Chicago.

Radio War Nerd EP 540 — Battles of Nomonhan Pt. 2: Zhukov Rising, feat. Annibale

by mail@yashalevine.com (Gary Brecher)
Tom Roche

Annibale+Nerds deliver another EXCELLENT ep, this time the 2nd-of-2-parts on the battles of Nomonhan (aka Khalkhin Gol) and their significance in global geopolitics (esp WW2). While {part 1 of 2, ep#=538} focused on the deep origins of the conflict (mostly on Japan from 1853 arrival of US "black ships" to 1936 2-26 Incident), this ep (IMHO even better than part 1) covers roughly 1929-1945, esp focusing on 1939 and the battles themselves. Topics covered include (/roughly/ in order of presentation, but IMHO the following is a bit better organized than is the audio):

* aftermath of 2-26 Incident: members of IJA {Kōdōha, Imperial Way} attempt coup in 1936, are massively repressed after failure (hence {Tōseiha, Control Faction} gains power)
* IJA overview: logistics, tactics, doctrine
* 1929: USSR defeats KMT Northeastern Army attempt to seize sole control of Chinese Eastern Railway
* tactics employed in this spacetime
* Dec 1936 Xian Incident: KMT esp Chiang forced to make Second United Front alliance with CPC vs Japan
* 7 Jul 1937: IJA (Kwantung Army) invades China proper (south of Manchuria/Manchukuo)
* 1938 Battle of Lake Khasan
* Nomonhan battles in Mar and Jul-Aug 1939
***** why fight at Nomonhan
***** early 1939: mostly Mongol units cross Khalkhin Gol River, taking positions on both sides of river, skirmishes ensue
***** Zhukov takes local RA command (57th Corps) ~1 Jun 1939: begins assessments, corrective actions, planning
***** spycraft and maskirovka
***** IJAAF airpower incompetence: have local air superiority over VVS, but don't use it properly (notably, fail to provide close air support)
***** Soviet logistical superiority: not only does RA do better than IJA, IJA believe that sufficient logistics simply /can't/ be provided by /either/ side due to remoteness of area
***** Jul 1939: IJA counterattacks fail to dislodge RA from Soviet/Mongol positions
***** Aug 1939: Soviet offensive does massive damage to IJA
***** IJA sue for peace, get ceasefire 15 Sep 1939
* results/legacy

The AP team will wear formal Tevas to the new White House ballroom. Some AI tools don’t understand biology yet

by John Timmer
Tom Roche

pullquote:
> the trained foundation models weren't very good at predicting when the alterations of pairs of genes would produce complex patterns of changes—when the alteration of one gene synergized with the alteration of a second. "The deep learning models rarely predicted synergistic interactions, and it was even rarer that those predictions were correct," the researchers concluded. In a separate test that looked specifically at these synergies between genes, it turned out that none of the models were better than the simplified system that always predicted no changes.

Biology is an area of science where AI and machine-learning approaches have seen some spectacular successes, such as designing enzymes to digest plastics and proteins to block snake venom. But in an era of seemingly endless AI hype, it might be easy to think that we could just set AI loose on the mounds of data we've already generated and end up with a good understanding of most areas of biology, allowing us to skip a lot of messy experiments and the unpleasantness of research on animals.

But biology involves a whole lot more than just protein structures. And it's extremely premature to suggest that AI can be equally effective at handling all aspects of biology. So we were intrigued to see a study comparing a set of AI software packages designed to predict how active genes will be in cells exposed to different conditions. As it turns out, the AI systems couldn't manage to do any better than a deliberately simplified method of predicting.

The results serve as a useful caution that biology is incredibly complex, and developing AI systems that work for one aspect of it is not an indication that they can work for biology generally.

957 - Democracy Soon! feat. Osita Nwanevu (8/4/25)

Tom Roche

Not much yux (and not much Felix, who we don't hear until ~36 min into the audio), but VERY EXCELLENT analysis and history of US democracy. Seriously, if you want a high-level analysis of the dynamics affecting the past and future of the US polity, you will find this Chapo ep 62 min well-spent.

Osita Nwanevu stops by to discuss his new book The Right of the People: Democracy and the Case for a New American Founding. Osita leads us through his case that American “democracy” as it currently stands isn’t that democratic at all. We discuss the real intentions of the founders, the actual American revolution of the Civil War, and the stalled re-founding of reconstruction. We also look at the potential for economic democracy, the political reforms needed to re-found the country, the problem of the judiciary, and the challenges of a new media environment to democratizing movements. Yes, today the wacky morning DJ actually does say democracy’s a joke. Pick up Osita’s book here: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/704686/the-right-of-the-people-by-osita-nwanevu/ AND, we’ve secured ONE MORE WEEK to get your pre-order in for YEAR ZERO: A Chapo Trap House Comic Anthology at badegg.co/products/year-zero-1

Real Python: Exploring Python T-Strings

Python 3.14’s t-strings allow you to intercept and transform input values before assembling them into a final representation. Unlike f-strings, which produce a str object, t-strings resolve to a Template instance, allowing you to safely process and customize dynamic content.

One of the key benefits of t-strings is their ability to help prevent security vulnerabilities like SQL injection and XSS attacks. They’re also valuable in other fields that rely on string templates, such as structured logging.

By the end of this video course, you’ll understand that:

  • Python t-strings are a generalization of f-strings, designed to safely handle and process input values.
  • The main components of a t-string include static string parts and interpolations, which are accessible through the Template class.
  • You process t-strings by iterating over their components, using attributes such as .strings, .interpolations, and .values for safe and customized handling.

No ChatGPT here—our em dashes are organic. This week: in the Iran-Israel war, an update on the casualties and targets (1:52), US involvement remains in question (7:45), Ayatollah Khamenei refuses to surrender (14:47), and US and Israeli intelligence agencies disagree over “evidence” of Iran pursuing a nuclear weapon (18:14); Trump quits the G7 summit early, possibly due to Israel-Iran, and later insults French president Emmanuel Macron (20:59); the IDF is still killing dozens per day in Gaza, mostly near aid sites (24:23); the US military is withdrawing from most of its bases in Syria (27:11); the Thai government might be on the verge of a collapse (29:56); the DRC and Rwanda approve a “draft” peace agreement (33:57); in Russia-Ukraine, Trump cancels a normalization meeting while shutting down a sanctions working group (36:39), and Russia carries out its deadliest strike of the year on Kyiv (37:55); Trump decides to expand his travel ban (40:14); and in a New Cold War update, a new trade détente with China does not include critical minerals for military use (42:43).

Listen to Derek’s special with Akbar Shahid Ahmed on US involvement in the Israel-Iran war.
