Academy Award-winning actor Jeremy Irons (“The Mission,” “Die Hard With a Vengeance,” “Brideshead Revisited”) on Wednesday savaged New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s attempts to coerce people into healthier lifestyles, comparing the mayor’s policies to a “nanny state.”

“I’m a complete libertarian. I think it’s very, very dangerous. I really mean that. I think the smoking ban is a tip of an iceberg of society — the leaders of society telling us how to be,” he said during an interview on HuppPost Live

“I think it’s not their business. I think it is their business to tell us to care for and respect each other and each other’s happiness and each other’s health, and we are responsible enough to do that,” he adds.

He continued:

I think it’s terrible, it’s the tip of the iceberg, because it’s an attitude, it’s an attitude where the governors think “we know what’s best for people, and they’re so stupid that they would only not do it if we ban it.”

And personally, I think about smoking tobacco — it suits some people, it doesn’t suit other people. A lot of people who are bored and unhappy smoke cigarettes. Of course if you’re bored and unhappy, you’ll die early. So that’s why those two things add up.

Breaking his line of thought for a moment, he paused to clean his back teeth.

“I have a grandmother of a friend of mine in Greece, who grew tobacco all her life, that’s what they did, in northern Greece, they grew tobacco,” he continued.

“She died at 103, she smoked from the age of 13. So it suits some people, it doesn’t suit others. But I think, when governors tell us how we can behave and how we can’t, I don’t believe it’s the way to go.”

An Arizona veterans services official was fired and her boss resigned after she said women might be less suited for combat because of their menstrual cycles.

Former state Rep. Terri Proud, hired as an administrative assistant with the Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services, made the comment this week to the Arizona-Sonora News Service.

“I understand that women want to be on the front lines, and they want to do their service and women are very strong. We’ve really come far through the years. We’re extremely strong,” Proud said. But, she added, “Women have certain things during the month I’m not sure they should be out there dealing with. I don’t know how to address that topic in a very diplomatic manner.”

Proud, a Republican, was fired Wednesday and her supervisor, Veterans’ Services Director Joey Strickland, resigned — because he had been told by the governor’s office not to hire her in the first place.

“Col. Strickland was given very specific instructions about a year ago to avoid hiring this individual. He chose to do so anyway and unfortunately that individual’s questionable judgment was on display this week with some ill chosen public remarks regarding women in the military,” Matt Benson, spokesman for Gov. Jan Brewer (R), told the Arizona-Sonora News Service.

Benson didn’t say why Brewer didn’t want Proud hired.

“What we have seen in the last few days is evidence of a lack of judgment. That speaks to some of our concerns,” he told the Associated Press.

Then-Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta lifted the military ban on women in combat in January.

Proud made national news during her time in the Arizona legislature when she said last year that women who want an abortion should be required to watch one first.

Proud told the Arizona-Sonora News Service her comment about women in combat was taken “way out of context” and that she didn’t mean any offense.

We don’t know much about her, but this 15-year-old girl from Maryland sure knows her facts when it comes to firearms.

Speaking before Maryland legislators at recent a hearing, the young woman made her case against gun control and argued restrictive legislation will only affect law-abiding American citizens. It only took her about three minutes to effectively make her point.

The video was posted to YouTube about a week ago and already has over 1.5 million views.

“I’m 15-years-old and I’ve been shooting for almost eight years. I’ve also been part of the Maryland Rifle Club and Maryland State Rifle Team,” she began. “Because of this I have become eligible for various shooting scholarships around the country to a wide array of even the most prestigious colleges that have shooting teams.”

“Achieving stricter gun control laws would obliterate any opportunity I could have had to attend a decent college on a shooting scholarship,” she added.

She went on to say that it became immediately clear when she began shooting that guns are not the problem, people are.

“Chicago, Illinois has had some of the strictest gun control laws in America enacted in the last few years and it is currently more as twice as likely for you to be killed in Chicago than in the Afghani war,” the 15-year-old said.

She pointed out that of the 3,371 have been killed in Chicago in the past 11 years. Of that total, only 37 were killed with a rifle — barely 1 percent.

“So creating gun control legislation that targets ‘assault rifles’ has statistically proven to only weed out less than 1 percent of the problem if you’re lucky,” she added.

The Tampa Bay Rays mascot, Raymond Ray, has brought negative attention to the whole franchise after holding up an inappropriate sign Wednesday night during a match-up against the Baltimore Orioles.

Here’s the sign that quickly resulted in an apology from the Rays organization. Via @asianmegan:

For those unaware, Steve Irwin, nicknamed “the Crocodile Hunter,” was killed by a sting ray while shooting a new TV show in 2006. His heart was pierced by the serrated poisonous spine of a stingray.

On Thursday, the Rays released the following statement apologizing for Raymond’s bad decision:

“Last night Rays mascot Raymond was handed an inappropriate sign brought to the game by a fan. Fans are welcome to bring signs into Tropicana Field provided they are not offensive. The Tampa Bay Rays regret that this particular sign was displayed in the ballpark, and we apologize for the lapse in judgment.”

Sam Grant finds himself facing two felony charges for accidentally hitting passing vehicles while shooting his BB gun outdoors.

Here’s the kicker: He’s just 7-years-old.

Grant, who turns 8 on Thursday, will appear in a Catawba County courtroom this week for the incident that reportedly occurred in Catawba, N.C. sometime in February.

Police say Grant was outside shooting his BB gun. His parents told WGHP-TV that their son was aiming at an abandoned home down the street. Regardless, some of the BBs ended up striking two motor vehicles. No one in either vehicles were injured, according to police.

The 7-year-old reportedly has been charged with two felony counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle.

“The officer told me he didn’t want to charge my son. The lady told me she didn’t want him charged and the next thing I know, I’m getting a letter from DPS saying he’s being charged with two felonies,” Cherry Robbins, Grant’s mother, told WGHP-TV.

“They considered his BB gun a firearm. It’s not a firearm — it’s a BB gun,” Grant’s father, Ray Robbins, added.

His initial court date is Friday in Newton, N.C.

“If convicted, Grant could be dealing with a year of probation and hundreds of hours of community service. If convicted, the felonies could remain on his record until he turns 16,” WGHP notes.

Linda Ellis is the author of "The Dash," a poem that has become a popular selection at funerals and other reflective moments since being composed in 1996. The poem reflects on the "dash" between one's birth date and death date and features stanzas such as:

Critics say that Ellis has used the poem to become a prolific "copyright troll"—when she catches a funeral home, church, or school reprinting her poem without permission, she demands thousands of dollars in damages. In one case, she asked a school to pay her $7,500 for unauthorized use of her poem; as motivation to settle, Ellis cited another case in which she had sued a defendant and won $269,000 in damages and attorneys' fees.

One of her most vocal critics is Matthew Chan, the proprietor of the anti-troll site Extortion Letter Info (ELI). The site began as a response to aggressive copyright enforcement efforts by Getty images, but it has since become a forum for discussing a wide variety of copyright trolling activities. Last year, Chan added a section of his site dedicated to Ellis's campaign.

CyberBunker

Last week, anti-spam organization Spamhaus became the victim of a large denial of service attack, intended to knock it offline and put an end to its spam-blocking service. By using the services of CloudFlare, a company that provides protection and acceleration of any website, Spamhaus was able to weather the storm and stay online with a minimum of service disruptions.

Since then, the attacks have grown to more than 300 Gb/s of flood traffic: a scale that's threatening to clog up the Internet's core infrastructure and make access to the rest of the Internet slow or impossible.

It now seems that the attack is being orchestrated by a Dutch hosting company called CyberBunker. CyberBunker specializes in "anything goes" hosting, using servers in a former nuclear bunker (hence the name). As long as it's not "child porn and anything related to terrorism," CyberBunker will host it. This includes sending spam.

It's difficult to know if the cops are watching your mobile phone's location by using a stingray. Ed Yourdon

According to new Justice Department e-mails obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Northern California, and published on Wednesday, federal investigators have been routinely using “stingrays" to catch bad guys. A stingray is a device that can create a false cellphone tower, and allows authorities to determine a particular mobile phone’s precise location. Stingrays aren't new—law enforcement agencies nationwide are believed to have been using them for years.

But one e-mail in the new trove reveals something brand-new: that the Feds were not fully clear about the fact that they were specifically using stingrays (also known as “IMSI catchers”) when asking for permission to conduct electronic surveillance from federal magistrate judges.

A press representative from the United States Department of Justice did not respond to Ars’ request for comment.

A major investor advisory firm has recommended against shareholder approval of T-Mobile USA’s pending merger with MetroPCS.

According to Bloomberg, Institutional Shareholder Services Inc. told MetroPCS shareholders to vote against the deal next month.

In a report to investors, ISS says it’s opposed to the deal because it feels that MetroPCS could do better on its own, even though MetroPCS would need to acquire more spectrum to stay competitive. “The question remains, ‘Why now?’” ISS said in its report. “Absent merging with T-Mobile, PCS will still have $1.5 billion of cash to dedicate to new spectrum in some way and could continue operating as a standalone company.”
