Billabong Girls // Hawaii // 4:07

by SURFING Magazine
rui

yum

OK, we’ll be honest here: this maybe isn’t the best surfing you’ll see today. And maybe actual wave-riding accounts for only half of this four minute clip. But maybe that’s not such an awful thing. If it featured Creed McTaggart with that surf/lifestyle ratio, you’d have a case for compliant — but Creed’s blonde locks are nowhere to be found. Instead, the blonde locks belong to gals like Laura Enever, Courtney Conologue and some of the stars of our Feminine Mystique flipbook. They surf, they model and they frolic. Because when the working day is done, girl’s just want to have fun.

Vegan Mexican Layered Dip Recipe

by noreply@blogger.com (Madison Partland)

I need you to promise me that the next time you host or attend a party, that you make this dip! Not only will people be bowing down to you due to your delicious and impressive dip but you will also be talked about for years to come as the person who makes amazing vegan food. But in all seriousness, this is one crazily tasty dip. I guarantee that if this was served at a party, you would quietly sneak it away and eat it all for yourself... it is that delicious!! When Jerome and I first made this, we photographed it and then sat at our table in silence and ate the whole thing between us. It was soooo filling and we didn't end up eating dinner because it was so delicious and wholesome. On that note, you could even make this as a dinner dish by making our tortilla chips (see the tips section at the bottom of this post) and covering them with the layers. It would be like a yummy vegan nachos recipe! Anywho, I hope you all love this as much as we do :)

makes 1 medium-sized dip

Bean Layer:
   1 cup canned refried beans
   1 garlic clove, crushed
   1/4 teaspoon cumin
   1/4 teaspoon 'smoked' paprika
   salt and pepper

Guacamole Layer:
   1 large avocado
   2 teaspoons lime juice
   salt and pepper

Sour Cream Layer:
   150g silken tofu
1 teaspoon lemon or lime juice
   1/2 teaspoon sweetener
   1/2 tablespoon Soy Milky Lite
2 1/2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
   good pinch of salt

Salsa Layer:
   1 cup diced tomato
1 tablespoon finely diced purple onion
   1 teaspoon lime juice
1 tablespoon finely chopped coriander leaves
   salt and pepper

Garnish Layer:
   green onions
   sliced olives
   coriander leaves

tortilla chips, to serve (see tips)*

  1. Make the bean layer: Add all 'bean layer' ingredients to a small bowl and mix until combined. Spoon the mixture into a dip bowl and press down into an even layer. Set aside.
  2. Make the guacamole layer: Add all 'guacamole layer' ingredients to a small bowl and mash with a fork until combined. Taste and season with more salt and pepper if needed. Spoon the guacamole into the dip bowl and spread into an even layer over the bean layer. Set aside.
  3. Make the sour cream layer: Add all 'sour cream layer' ingredients to a processor and blend until smooth and creamy. Taste and season with more salt if necessary. Add more apple cider vinegar or lemon/lime juice for more acidity if needed. Pour the sour cream evenly over the guacamole layer in the dip bowl. Set aside.
  4. Make the salsa layer: Add all 'salsa layer' ingredients to a bowl and toss until combined. Season with more salt and pepper if needed. Spoon the salsa over the sour cream layer in the dip bowl. Set aside.
  5. Garnish: Top the dip with your favourite garnishes such as sliced green onions, olives and coriander leaves.
  6. Serve with tortilla chips! Enjoy!

  • *You could purchase chips or corn chips to serve with your dip or prepare 'tortilla chips' like we do. To do this: Slice 3 wholemeal tortillas into triangles and place them on a baking tray. Spray with oil and sprinkle with smoked paprika and salt and pepper. Place under the grill until lightly browned and crispy. They are amazing and look so rustic and home made!
  • Feel free to purchase store-bought vegan sour cream.
  • Alternative to canned refried beans - blend up canned kidney or pinto beans and season accordingly.
  • Use any desired sweeteners in your sour cream... or omit the sweetener completely. I used brown sugar!

The nutrition information above is an approximate guideline.

Best blenders for green smoothies

by Jadah and Jen

So, you’re walking through the store, and you come to the blender section…

“Oh, boy,” you think to yourself. There are blenders with square pitchers, round pitchers, glass pitchers, plastic pitchers. Some have 12 speeds, while others go at the speed of a bullet. There are even blenders that almost cost as much as it does to pay monthly rent for an apartment! “I’m just trying to be healthy by drinking green smoothies, but I don’t know what blender to use!”

Well, we’re here to help you blender shop!

But first, we have a little secret: Any blender works for making green smoothies. We both started with a normal, everyday blender to make green smoothies. Sure, they didn’t blend all of the ingredients to a creamy consistency in 30 seconds or less, but still blended delicious tasting drinks that were healthy for our bodies.

cheap blenders

All that being said, nobody wants to buy a cheap blender that’s not going to do a decent job. That’s why we created a list of our favorite affordable blenders. All of these blenders are under $120, and have some of the best reviews out there. Check out that list here.

Quick tip for eliminating green smoothies with leafy chunks: First, add leafy greens and liquid to blender. Blend until smooth. Next add remaining ingredients and blend again!

Blendtec vs vitamix
Want to kick your blending up a notch? Check out the Vitamix and Blendtec blenders! These companies have designed professional-grade blenders that not only blend your green smoothies with ease, but can help you cook soups, make veggie dips, ice cream and more. Check out our review on both of these amazing blenders here.

So, which blender’s it gonna be?

How to naturally sweeten your green smoothies

by Jadah and Jen

We love bananas, and use them often in our green smoothies. These yellow friends act as nature’s sweetener and also contain a boat load of nutrients like potassium, fiber and vitamin C. If your green smoothie tastes a bit like lawn clippings, try adding a banana or two. This will help turn a pulpy smoothie into a creamy and delicious smoothie — just how they should taste!

We often buy a few bunches of bananas if they’re on sale, and peel and toss them into the freezer once they ripen. So, if you need to chill down and sweeten a green smoothie, all you have to do is pull out a frozen banana.

Want to know how to freeze bananas?  Check this out:
Step One: Be sure bananas are fully ripe – brown spots are your friend!

Step Two: Peel bananas and chop into 3 – 4 pieces.

Step Three: Place bananas in a single layer on a flat tray and place in freezer until frozen—this step helps prevent a clumpy banana mess.

Step Four: Take frozen bananas off of tray and place into a freezer bag or freezer-safe plastic container and store in freezer for later use.

Not big on bananas… or can’t eat them altogether?

Bananas are not the only natural sweetener out there. For those just not into bananas, try freezing them to reduce their flavor. You can also add other natural sweeteners like dates, figs, apples, peaches, grapes, or mangos to your green smoothies. Tip: Adding more sweet fruits to a recipe will help mask the “green” flavor—especially if you aren’t used to it!

Want the creaminess of a banana without the taste?

Bananas aren’t the only fruit that can make your smoothie thick and creamy. Avocados, mangoes, or even 2 tablespoons of chia seeds (soaked for a few minutes before blending) will help the consistency of your green smoothie and turn it into a creamy concoction.

Can’t I just add sugar?

We usually don’t add extra sweeteners to our green smoothies— fruit is all we use! If you still need a little extra something to enjoy your green smoothie, then try adding just a little real maple syrup or raw honey until you adjust to the green smoothie lifestyle. Please, please, please stay away from zero-calorie or artificial sweeteners—they act like toxins in your body.

Saying “no,” to b’naners altogether? We’ve dedicated this page just for you with our banana-free recipes!

What should I eat while drinking green smoothies?

by Jadah and Jen

Question: Am I supposed to just drink green smoothies the rest of my life?
Answer: No way!

Whether you are doing a 30-Day Green Smoothie Challenge or not, the goal is never to only drink green smoothies—we want you to eat normal meals, too! Having one green smoothie a day without even changing your regular diet moves you in the right direction towards healthy eating. That’s what the green smoothie lifestyle is all about!

However, if you’re looking for a little more guidance when it comes to what else you should be eating while you’re gulping the greens, we suggest you eat real food that is free of processed sugars and ingredients.

A general rule for us: “If you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it.”

We love replacing one meal a day with a green smoothie or having it as a snack, but you can bump it up to two meal replacements if you’d like! When drinking a green smoothie as a meal replacement, make sure to add a protein boost (plant-based protein powder, nut milk, nut butter) and healthy fats (avocado, coconut oil) to complete your meal. Or, you can snack on some nuts or a hard-boiled egg 30-60 minutes after you drink your green smoothie. This will keep you satisfied throughout the day.

What if I want to take healthy eating to the next level?

If you want to step up your healthy eating game, then we recommend checking out Fresh Start: A 21-Day Cleanse. This is a step-by-step meal plan, with daily green smoothie recipes and whole food recipes created by our resident holistic nutritionist. The recipes are out-of-this-world delicious and so good for your body! We even have a free 1-Day cleanse download to get you started.

Here’s what a few rawkstars had to say after finishing the cleanse:

“I feel a lot healthier and am back on track with planning my meals which really helps me continue eating well. I am mentally happier and feel more as one in my body. I have also lost 8 pounds which is good especially since my goal was to eat well. Losing the weight was done in a healthy natural way and was just a happy side effect.” — Barbara

“I feel soooo good! I have way more energy, I’ve lost 7 pounds, I sleep through the night and wake up refreshed and clearheaded. I have an entirely new relationship with food.” — Raven

“I feel more energized and cleaner in the sense that I don’t feel bloated and heavy. I feel fresh from the inside out.” — Ariel

“I became more energetic without the needs of having any tea or coffee. I am more committed to a healthy and balanced diet.” — Shu Jin

In the studio with Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, 1966

lichtwarhcolorsix.jpg

Pop Artists Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol divulge some of the influences and techniques to their work in this documentary by Lane Slate from 1966.

Artists are not always the best expositors on their art. There are the exceptions like David Hockney, who inclusively shares his knowledge through television documentaries, or Francis Bacon, who spent hours in conversation with David Sylvester discussing the influences and sources for his work. Here, we find Lichtenstein enthusiastic though slightly inconclusive, and Warhol being just Andy.

Roy Lichtenstein’s bold, bright, iconic paintings of comic book panels and advertisements offered an ironic commentary on sixties’ consumer society, while at the same time showed an artist attempting to make art viable in such a world. When Lichtenstein explains the ideas and intentions behind his work, his answers come spilling out like the contents of a shaken can of cola, the bubbles of information frothing over into long stream of consciousness answers, which never really come to a formal resolution.

Lichtenstein begins with a description of the modern landscape that inspired his work and influenced his style:

”I think we’re living in a society that is to a large extent is Pop, I think it’s one of the facets of our society, and it’s one of the facets of present society which is new, and is one of the facets which hasn’t existed before.

“It’s made in a way, partially, a new landscape for us. In the way of billboards, and neon signs, and all the stuff we’re familiar with, and also literature, and television, radio, almost all of the landscape, all of our environment seems to be made, partially, of a desire to sell products.

“This is the landscape that I am interested in portraying. I’m also not only portraying it, but I am working in the style of it, or a style which at least parodies the style of everyday art, everyday society.

“I am interested in portraying a sort of anti-sensibility that pervades the society and a maybe gross over-simplification. I use that more as style rather than actuality. I really don’t think art can be gross and over-simplified and remain art—it must have subtleties, and it must sort of yield to an aesthetic unity, otherwise it’s not in the realm of art, it’s something else probably. But I think using it as a style gives it a kind of brutality, and maybe hostility that is useful to me in an aesthetic way.”

Okay, Roy.

Andy Warhol starts his interview with a renunciation of the reverence with which art and paintings are given.

”Why I don’t paint anything? Because I hate objects. I hate to go to museums to see pictures on walls that look so important because they don’t mean anything, I think.”

It’s a good start, as Warhol could give a masterclass in being inarticulate. Of course, it’s all deliberately elusive, and just watch how quickly he loses interest once the questions become about the personal rather than his work.

“You should just tell me the words and I’ll repeat them. I’m so empty today, I can’t think of anything.”

The interview ends with Warhol talking about The Velvet Underground, before he is seen inflating silver balloons as the band rehearse in the background.

This saucy Soviet alphabet keeps a comrade warm at night (and improves literacy!)

alphabet

Sergey Merkurov is best known as a USSR People’s Artist, sculptor of Soviet icons and the master of Soviet “death masks”- Merkurov even made a mold of the late Lenin, himself! Merkurov also produced this delightfully dirty alphabet, complete with orgies, flying dicks, and paranormal partners.

The 1931 book that bore these bare bodies was actually intended to encourage literacy, and likely a part of Likbez, the gigantically ambitious Soviet adult literacy campaign of the 20s and 30s. Around the turn of the century, only about 24% of the Russian population could read, but by the 1950s, the Soviet Union had achieved a 100% literacy rate. With such inspiring teaching tools, one need not wonder how!

Unfortunately, the alphabet below is in Cyrillic, so you probably can’t spell your name out in Soviet porn. Sorry typography pervs!

The lost art of cassette tape spines

I adore these images of cassette tape spines lovingly labeled and decorated from the caveman days.

I don’t miss cassette tapes at all, but the bespoke folk art aspect of these is kind of funky fresh, you have to admit…

Nat Young & Michael Dunphy // Santa Cruz // 2:11

by SURFING Magazine

Before the Pacific Ocean forgot that it existed, there was a good run of swell in California. It birthed good waves at all points north and south, and Michael Dunphy was not about to miss out on that. He flew from the henna tattoo capital of the world, Virginia Beach, to Santa Cruz with plans to hang out with his pal Nat Young. The duo destroyed it and filmer Bryant Thomas was there to capture their conquests. The result is 2:11 of pure magic.

Taiwanese funerals: Miniskirts and marching bands

taiwanfuneralband.jpg

I attended about half-a-dozen funerals before I was twelve years of age. To my young mind, they were all the same, dreary and cold, under slate-grey, rainy skies, which made me think that when my time comes, I’d like to be sent off by Viking long boat, set aflame on chilled northern waters. As you can tell, I was greatly influenced by the Kirk Douglas/Tony Curtis film The Vikings, and I’d decided it was either longship, or die like Ragnar (Ernest Borgnine), thrown into a pit to wrestle with starving wolves. Ah yes, a Viking’s funeral was my plan. But now, having seen these funerals from Taiwan, I may just change my future funeral arrangements.

Taiwanese funerals are certainly loud and cheerful, and make a change from the traditional damp-eyed family and friends pretending they actually liked you. It’s just a pity one has to die before enjoying such an exuberant send-off.

See more Taiwanese send-offs here.
