First Look at the Poster for New Girls Tokusatsu Flick "Jyosizu"

by Mikikazu Komatsu
Darylsurat

"the problematic super heroines"

The first official poster for the upcoming tokusatsu film Jyosizu (roughly translated as "a girls team") is revealed to the Japanese media today. The comedy-action film is written/directed by Yuichi Fukuda, who is known by his 2013 controversial film HK/Hentai Kamen. It tells a story of a Super Sentai team consists of five modern and selfish girls. Can they fight against an evil army as the strongest super heroine team?

The girl's costumes are designed by manga artist Kazuhiko Shimamoto, who is also known as the original character designer for the 1994 TV anime Mobile Fighter G Gundam and currently working on the manga reboot of the anime titled Chokyu! Mobile Fighter G Gundam in Kadokawa Shoten's Gundam Ace since August 2010. Yuichi Fukuda's film writer debut was for the 2005 live-action film adaptation of Shimamoto's popular baseball manga Gyakyou Nine.

The five actresses who play the problematic super heroines are; Mirei Kiritani (Red/Naoko Akagi), Mina Fujii

(Blue/Mika aota), Mitsuki Takahata (Yellow/Yuri Kikawada), Kasumi Asumi (Green/Konoko Midoriyama),

and Mitsuki Yamamoto (Navy/Sumire Konno). The theme song "Jyoshi's Theme" is sung by popular anime

voice actor Daisuke Namikawa. The film hits Japanese theaters on June 7.

Frederik L. Schodt interview

Darylsurat

This originally went up as part of the "newsletter" but said newsletter is just links to web pages that aren't yet displayed on the front page or in the RSS

It’s quite possible you wouldn’t be reading this website without Frederik L. Schodt. It’s hard to overstate the impact the writer, translator and interpreter has had on western anime and manga fandom. Writing about manga before anybody in the States was even eating sushi, Schodt published a book titled Manga! Manga! in 1983, giving the U.S. its first glimpse of this whole “Japanese comics” thing. Since then he’s continued to write about Japanese pop culture, with books about Astro Boy , Japanese robots,...

Dinesh D'Souza Indicted For Campaign Finance Violations

by karoli

Today just keeps getting better even though I'm sure he'll walk

(Credit: Gage Skidmore/Flickr)

Dinesh D'Souza, occasional Fox News guest commentator and creator of an Obama smear film released in 2012 has just been indicted for violation of federal campaign finance laws.

Reuters:

According to an indictment made public on Thursday in federal court in Manhattan, D'Souza around August 2012 reimbursed people who he had directed to contribute $20,000 to the candidate's campaign. The candidate was not named in the indictment.

The candidate may not have been named in the indictment, but the only federal Senate candidate D'Souza gave money to in 2012 was Wendy Long, who challenged Kirsten Gillibrand for her Senate seat.

No wonder James O'Keefe wants to get out of New York. How long can it be before he faces an indictment, too?

Update: His last tweet before the news broke is hilarious, as are some of the replies:

IRS targets Hollywood Conservatives--wasn't this supposed to stop? http://t.co/v6aKIX3IKj

Will NBC Cover American Conservatives' Role In Russia's Anti-Gay Crackdown?

Darylsurat

"No. As usual."

As NBC prepares to air the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, NBC Universal executives and reporters have vowed that the network's coverage won't ignore the draconian anti-gay laws signed by President Vladimir Putin last summer. What remains unclear, however, is whether NBC will draw attention to the involvement of American conservatives in shaping those laws.

As the Kremlin launched its anti-gay crackdown last summer, NBC News largely ignored the issue, even as it hyped the upcoming Winter Olympics. NBC's silence on Russia's law banning so-called "gay propaganda" - which the Kremlin followed by banning the adoption of children by parents from pro-equality countries - raised the question of whether the network's financial interests as the games' broadcaster would outweigh the imperative of informing viewers about egregious human rights violations against LGBT Russians. Still, NBC Sports Group chairman Mark Lazarus promised that NBC would "acknowledge" the crackdown. Meanwhile, assurances from anchor Bob Costas and NBC's hiring of New Yorker editor and respected Russia expert David Remnick seemed to indicate a commitment to covering the controversy.

What NBC hasn't made clear is whether it will highlight the intellectual and political involvement of several high-profile American conservatives in Russia's crackdown on LGBT citizens. Doing so may well engender hostility from certain political quarters, but telling the story is crucial to fully understanding how Russia arrived at its current point of horrific, state-sanctioned homophobic persecution.

According to information compiled by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and provided to Equality Matters, no fewer than 14 American conservative leaders have visited Russia to lobby lawmakers in support of the country's anti-gay legislation, lend their support to Russian social conservatives, and help plan for the 2014 World Congress of Families (WCF), an annual "pro-family" confab sponsored by the eponymous Rockford, IL-based group and slated to be held in Moscow from September 10 to 14.

Here are some of the most notorious ambassadors for homophobia.

Brian Brown

Perhaps the most high-profile conservative to travel to Russia has been National Organization for Marriage (NOM) President Brian Brown. Right Wing Watch reported in October that Brown and a group French anti-gay activists traveled to Russia in June 2013 to support Russia's ban on gay adoption and adoption by any couple from a country that allows same-sex marriage. Brown's itinerary included a speech before the Russian Duma and a Russian television interview in which he lauded Russia's efforts to combat a series of "very negative developments all over the world." Brown returned to Russia in October, telling MSNBC host Rachel Maddow in a statement that his latest visit was to assist in planning for the WCF.

"Riddick" Film Collaborates with Buichi Terasawa's "Cobra the Space Pirate"

by Mikikazu Komatsu

Riddick, the third installment in the The Chronicles of Riddick film series starring Vin Diesel, will finally be released in Japan on March 8 under the title of Riddick: Galaxy Battle six months later than the US release in September 2013. Buichi Terasawa's famous space pirate character Cobra collaborates with the film in the 4-page promotional flyer. According to the flyer, Riddick is known as the most brutal lone wolf in the galaxy, and Cobra is the most wanted space pirate in the galaxy, so the collaboration of the two seems logical.

By the way, the live-action adaptation film of Cobra titled Cobra: The Space Pirate was once announced by French film director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D) in 2010 and a teaser poster was unveiled in the following year. Aja said that he wanted to release the film in summer of 2013, but the plan has not been realized yet.

Fanart Meme Traps Anime Characters Behind Smartphone Glass

by Scott Green
Darylsurat

Approaches to this concept range from comical to "Put 'Em On Da Glass" by Sir Mix-A-Lot

The last week has given rise to bit of obvious genius on Japanese art portal Pixiv. Suitable for some awesome wallpapers, the hot trend of the moment in fanart is to draw characters trapped behind the glass of a smartphone.

The trend is not well organized, tagging is inconsistent, and plenty of pictures aren't tagged at all, but many are in the tried to confine tag.

Masahiro Ando Interview

Even if it didn’t include directing Sword of the Stranger , Hanasaku Iroha , and Blast of Tempest , Masahiro Ando ’s resume would be still be pretty darn impressive. Starting his career as a key animator, Ando’s action sequences in films like Jin-Roh , Cowboy Bebop , End of Evangelion and Memories are among the most fluid and impressive in the industry. We met the director at a strange gathering in the middle of the desert they called “Otakon Vegas” and proceeded to probe him with a variety of questions...

What are you saying, really?

Steve McQueen & John Ridley’s 12 Years A Slave got nominated for an Oscar this year. That got me thinking, so I dug up a list of winners and nominees for the Academy Award for Best Picture.

You should click through, so that you can accurately answer this brief survey:

-How many black movies, with “black movies” defined as “primarily concerned with or created by black people” for the purposes of the question, have been nominated for Best Picture by the Academy?

-How many of those movies are about how sad it is to be black, or racial strife, or just the black condition in general?

-What does it mean when the organization of record for the movie industry only pays attention to black people, and undoubtedly people of several other stripes and types, when they’re in pain, but eats up movies about white people doing fantastic things?

Eddie Murphy, presenting an award at the 60th Academy Awards:

(and, just to stay on brand, here’s Jadakiss in 2004: “Why Halle have to let a white man pop her to get a Oscar?/Why Denzel have to be crooked before he took it?”

This year’s the 86th Academy Awards, but it’s biz as usual, isn’t it? According to a Feb. 2012 study, “the Academy is 94% white, 77% male, 14% under the age of 50, and has a median age of 62.”

The Vault of Error - Sin: The Movie

Another year is over and somehow, despite my best efforts to streamline and condense my DVD collection, the anime continues to overflow my shelves, threatening to burst the hinges off the Vault of Error. 2013 is dead and gone, leaving me with little more than a vague desire to file my tax returns. The new year beckons, brimming with untapped potential. What better way to ring in the cyberpunk future year of 2014 than with a look backwards to the equally futuristic Year 2000, a time when any moderately s...

Fox's Ablow: There's No Such Thing As Being Transgender

Darylsurat

Fox News needs to upgrade their hatorade rhetoric to the 2014 Internet "zero-sum game" model. You know how that one works. Instead of saying "there's no such thing," say that "they only encapsulate about 2-4% of the population which isn't enough to alter society for the benefit of."

Then throw out an unrelated statistic. Say something like "people clinically diagnosed as psychopaths encapsulate about 5% of the population, so we'd have to accommodate them FIRST." Zero-sum game hatorade, baby.

Fox News "Medical A Team" member Dr. Keith Ablow continued his pattern of baseless smears against LGBT people with an ill-informed, transphobic rant against a new California law that allows transgender students to use facilities that match their gender identities.

In a January 14 column for FoxNews.com, Ablow criticized a recently-enacted California law that allows transgender public school students to use bathroom facilities that correspond with their gender identity. Ablow predicted that nothing but "toxicity" would come from the measure, parroting the "bathroom panic" that's been central to Fox's coverage of the legislation:

I don't see anything but toxicity from the notion of a person with female anatomy feeling free to use the urinal in the boys' rest room while a boy stands next to her and uses one, too.

Governor Brown is one of the liberal politicians in the world who wants to sell people on the idea that he loves freedom when he is actually addicted to disempowering people.

And shaking the certain knowledge in boys and girls of whether they can count on not being seen naked by the opposite gender, not to mention whether they are themselves actually the gender they thought they were, is a powerful, devious and pathological way to weaken them by making them question their sense of safety, security and certainty about anything and everything.

Ablow's worst fears are baseless. School districts that have implemented similar policies have reported "nothing but positive results" and no instances of misconduct, which is why anti-LGBT groups have been forced to make up incidents of their own.

Ablow went on to falsely suggest that there's no proof that transgender people even exist, even while admitting that "many psychiatrists with very impressive credentials" disagree with him:

I don't believe we have definitive data (although many psychiatrists with very impressive credentials, who seem to mean well, assert that we do) that any male or female soul has ever in the history of the world been born into the wrong anatomic gender.

Let me put that more clearly:  I am not convinced by any science I can find that people with definitively male DNA and definitively male anatomy can actually be locked in a cruel joke of nature because they are actually female.

Those well-meaning psychiatrists include the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychological Association, which both recognize transgender people as real and deserving of respect and acknowledgment. Instead of taking the advice of America's largest professional psychological and psychiatric organizations, Ablow - who has no expertise in gender or sexuality issues - merely asserted that he is "not convinced" of the existence of transgender people.

Of course, Ablow has a history of commenting on issues that he's completely unqualified to discuss. A repeated misinformer on LGBT people, Ablow is one of the most prominent faces of Fox's transphobia problem. He's one of the network's most vocal defenders of junk "ex-gay" therapy programs and lashes out against the American Psychological Association for being politically motivated whenever its stances don't comport with his bigoted views. Most recently, Ablow garnered attention for declaring that "marriage died in 2013" because of gay people and polygamists. To any reality-based observer, Ablow's hyperbole and pseudoscience discredit him as a commentator on LGBT issues, but Fox News doesn't seem to mind.

Nintendo Loses Patent Infringement Case, Will Pay Royalties for 3DS Display Tech

by Humberto Saabedra

After months of deliberation on the matter, a judge in the US presiding over a patent case in the US District Court in Manhattan, New York where a Japanese company sued Nintendo beginning in 2011 to recover damages for the use of its stereoscopic display technology without permission has won its case.

The judge has set the royalty rate for each Nintendo 3DS unit sold at the wholesale level and the display technology in question allows stereoscopic images to be viewed with the naked eye and was the crux of Tomita asserting its patents on the technology in the case. The patents owned by Tomita were granted in 2008 after first being filed in 2003. Tomita Technologies International Ltd is now set to earn 1.82% of the wholesale price of every Nintendo 3DS sold for the life of the console, at $3.09 per unit, instead of a flat dollar rate that would have awarded the company an unearned windfall, in the eyes of the judge.

The judge presiding over the case had also cut the previous damages amount awarded by the jury in the case in half to $15.1 million last August, citing the jury going overboard with the initial award amount due to "improper factors" being taken into account such as basing the amount on the games sold, which had no bearing on the patent in question and the profitability of the console itself.

 Nintendo 3DS 1

The original amount based on the previous damages award by the jury was set to be 2.73 percent of the wholesale cost or $4.64 per unit, while Nintendo requested a 1.36 percent rate at $2.31, with the judge ultimately deciding that the 1.82 percent rate was the best compromise for both sides, owing to the rapid decrease in costs for the technology over time and a flat dollar amount again being deemed inapproriate due to constant price fluctuations in the marketplace outside of expected cost reductions.

 Nintendo 3DS XL 1

With this development, Nintendo will be earning less profit per 3DS unit sold over the life of the console, which will put a sizable dent in it its profit forecasts for the foreseeable future. Nintendo will also be forced to pay supplemental damages and prejudgment interest of $241,231. While the victory for Tomita doesn't mean that Nintendo will lose money on 3DS sales, $3 per unit is enough to make a company think twice about implementing technologies without negotiation.

How Nightly News Broadcasts Covered The Affordable Care Act's First Day

Much of the Affordable Care Act (the ACA, also known as Obamacare), went into effect on January 1, 2014. Major evening news broadcasts focused on different aspects of the law's effects and the extent to which the law will benefit consumers.

ACA Coverage Kicked In Jan. 1, 2014

Associated Press: "Health Overhaul Benefits Take Effect With New Year." A January 2 article from the Associated Press' Juliet Williams explained which sections of the ACA took effect on January 1, 2014:

Most major pieces of the Affordable Care Act take full effect with the new year. That means people who had been denied coverage because of a pre-existing medical condition can book appointments and get prescriptions.

Caps on yearly out-of-pocket medical expenses will mean people shouldn't have to worry about bankruptcy after treatment for a catastrophic illness or injury. And all new insurance policies must offer a minimum level of essential benefits, ranging from emergency room treatment to maternity care.

The law's benefits apply to individual policies as well as those offered through employers. [Associated Press, 1/2/14]

Broadcast News Report On First Days Of ACA Coverage

NBC Nightly News

NBC: "After Months Of Frustration And Confusion, Today Marked The Beginning Of A New Era In Healthcare In This Country." On the January 1 edition of NBC Nightly News, correspondent Tom Costello profiled one family enrolled in coverage under the ACA who previously had problems finding affordable health insurance, highlighting that they are "now covered under one cheaper policy effective today." He went on to claim that "there are many trouble spots," citing legal challenges to the law, and then concluded, "Tonight, millions of Americans are insured under the Obamacare system, and the number of people signing up are expected to increase in the next year."

[NBC, NBC Nightly News, 1/1/14]

ABC World News

ABC's Diane Sawyer: "As Of Tonight, More Than Two Million Americans Have Signed Up. Their Stories Are Beginning To Be Told." On the January 2 edition of ABC World News with Diane Sawyer, chief White House correspondent Johnathan Karl reported on the implementation of the ACA highlighting the story of Maggie Fernandez, a previously uninsured woman who is now able to afford health insurance through the ACA despite having a pre-existing condition. Fernandez noted, "While I was uninsured, I was paying $200 a month, but now with Obamacare I'll be paying $20 a month."

[ABC, ABC World News, 1/2/14]

CBS Evening News

CBS: "Numerous Religious Organizations" Have Challenged Contraceptive Mandate In ACA. On the January 1 edition of CBS Evening News, correspondent Chip Reid devoted the majority of his report on the ACA's implementation to religious challenges to the law's contraception mandate. Reid even interviewed an attorney representing the ACA's challengers.

[CBS, CBS Evening News, 1/1/14]

CBS: Will The ACA's Medicaid Expansion Keep People Out Of The Emergency Room? "That's The Question." The next day, CBS investigative correspondent Sharyl Attkisson cited a state study in order to suggest that the ACA's Medicaid expansion, which covers previously uninsured recipients, might increase emergency room visits. Attkisson pointed out that "the study was conducted back in 2008 before Obamacare was enacted" and noted that hospitals contacted by CBS had not seen an increase since the ACA was implemented.

[CBS, CBS Evening News 1/2/14]

Methodology

Media Matters conducted a Nexis search of transcripts of evening network broadcast news, defined as NBC, ABC, and CBS on January 1 and 2 using the search terms "show (nightly news OR world news with diane sawyer OR evening news) and (Obamacare or Obama care or health care or affordable care act or insurance)".

We also reviewed all broadcast shows for any mention of Obamacare on January 1 and 2.

VIDEO: An Introduction to Sakuga: The Animation of Anime

by Scott Green

In 2013, Colin Groesbeck presented "Sakuga: The Animation of Anime," an update to his 2011 "That Scene was Awesome: Japan's Iron Animators (Sakuga Anime)." This must watch for those fascinated by the highlights of full motion animation in anime is now finally cleaned up and posted in its entirety.

Presenter Colin Groesbeck shows you a new way to appreciate the anime you watch.

This is the first part of "Sakuga: The Animation of Anime", presented at Anime Central (Chicago) 2013, a two-hour extended edition of our 2011 presentation. I will gradually upload the recordings as I produce them.

Presenter Sean Bires (that's me!) shows you how anime is made. For more detailed information on the topic, read: http://www.pelleas.net/aniTOP/index.p...

Turn the [CC] on. "Believe it or not, anime used to look something like Disney." Presenter Neil Clingerman lays out how Japanese animation got to look (and move) like anime.

Additional reading about the Tiger Mask in animation history: http://www.pelleas.net/aniTOP/index.p...

Presenter Colin Groesbeck covers Hiroyuki Imaishi, a Japanese animator who takes "limited animation" stylization to its furthest heights.

Presenter Sean Bires (that's me!) covers Ichirō Itano and his influence on anime battles.

Apparently in some circles it's called "missile spam" or "Macross missile massacre", but rest assured that "Itano Circus" is its true name.

Presenter Neil Clingerman covers Shinya Ohira & Shinji Hashimoto, two influential surrealist animators.

Presenter Sean Bires (that's me!) talks about the highly influential Japanese animator Mitsuo Iso, the "flagbearer of new realism". Much of this segment is based on the writing of Anipages' Ben Ettinger. You should look up his articles & translated interviews on Mitsuo Iso, e.g. http://www.pelleas.net/aniTOP/index.p...

Iso is my sakuga hero. The GitS and EoE battle scenes is the reason I studied 2D animation for a short while.

Presenter Colin Groesbeck showcases the Kanada-school Bones animator, Yoshimichi Kameda.

Presenter Sean Bires discusses an animation powerhouse at a creative midpoint of those who came before him.

Turn the subtitles on. Presenter Neil Clingerman covers the masters of cinematic realism.

We also wanted to show more of Okiura's effects animation (e.g. the chopper attack scene from Patlabor 2) but we cut it in the interest of time. We also decided it would be a bad idea to open the panel with his cut from Evangelion 3.33. As a director, Okiura's most recent film is the Ghibli-esque "A Letter to Momo", which is worth seeing for its absurdly precise character animation.

Presenter Colin Groesbeck covers Little Witch Academia creator "Yoh" Yoshinari.

Yoshinari's Pixiv http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.ph...

Presenter Sean Bires (that's me!), in his fluffiest piece, covers Tetsuya Takeuchi. In addition to Honey & Clover 7, he also soloed both "Yuri Seijin Naoko-san" OVAs incl. all of its key staff positions; lots of wonderful animation there.

In addition to covering a full-solo episode, I also wanted to showcase someone who doesn't specialize in, you know, sick fights and explosive effects (though he has certainly done both). Sakuga comes in all forms, including lower-key character animation & comedy animation.

Presenter Neil Clingerman on Kick-Heart's Masaaki Yuasa, one of the zaniest and most under-appreciated anime creators. His varied, global influences (and the unusually international teams he assembles for his works) vitalize the sometimes too-insular anime industry. Though he is a prolific director, this is a look at Yuasa the animator.

Colin Groesbeck gives his take on Takeshi Koike.

MAJOR CORRECTION: Bobby's Girl scene was done by Takashi Nakamura. BahiJD (another sakuga animator worth looking up!) did some original research for us and contacted Morimoto himself to confirm.

Neil covers a classic animator & creator who defined Studio 4°C's golden age of shorts & music videos. Something worth taking a look at his Morimoto's artbook, "0range" -- https://plus.google.com/+SeanBires/po...

The conclusion in which I preach the sakuga gospel. Thanks for sticking with us through the whole presentation. The end scroller contains some titles & resources to check out.

They come to be bombarded by chaotic vibration of time, and entered into a series of war. Joanne d’Arc is born to save the world, the only person knowing the reanimation of a transcendence technology called “Shinki,” meaning God’s vessel. She foresees an emergence of deliverer and makes her way to the East, together with Leonardo da Vinci, the man of the insight. This really just sums up everything in one headline

The hosts of the Fox News morning show "Fox & Friends" said on Monday that a plus-sized Barbie doll might make girls think it was acceptable to be fat and then followed-up with a segment complaining that President Barack Obama's health care law was forcing companies to disclose nutritional information.
