This Infographic Of Marvel Character Movie Rights Is Pretty Helpful
Even with so much attention being given to the various movies starring Marvel heroes, from various film studios, it can still be a little confusing to try to figure out which studio owns film rights to which characters. But you know what helps clear everything up, always? Venn Diagrams. With that in mind The Geek Twins have created a helpful infographic explaining where the film rights for many popular Marvel characters are, including which ones overlap.
UMass Studies The Positive Effects of Casual Games
New research coming out of the University of Massachusetts’ psychology department reveals that casual game players get some cognitive benefits from playing games on a regular basis.
"Most of what we hear about video games concerns their detrimental effects on players. This study shows that people perceive many positive effects, even though the games can be addictive," said UMass professor Susan Whitbourne, who conducted the study along with undergraduates Stacy Ellenberg and Kyoko Akimoto.
LEGO's next sets up for consideration are a nerd's dream
LEGO CUUSOO has announced the latest round of fan-made sets up for consideration to be made into real products that anyone can buy. Previous winners include the Back to the Future DeLorean time machine with Doc and Marty, Minecraft, and most recently, Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary set. That puts the latest round of sets up for consideration in very good company.
The sets up for the Winter 2014 LEGO Review are:
- Sherlock - "This project has everything you need to act out your favorite scenes from 221B Baker Street, including a consulting criminal and a gaggle of characters for Sherlock to coyly insult."
- Macross VF-1 Valkyrie +Fast pack / Armored parts - "A model of the iconic mecha that you can build and transform."
- Legend of Zelda: Iron Knuckle Encounter - "The third project to reach 10,000 supporters based on the Legend of Zelda; this proposal features the Iron Knuckle in an interactive playset."
- Japanese Old Style Architecture - "A proposal for classic Japanese buildings in LEGO Bricks."
- The Adventure Time Project - "Mathematical! 10,000 Candy People have voted for the Tree Fort from the Land of Ooo to potentially become a LEGO set."
- BTTF – UCS DeLorean Time Machine - "A beautifully detailed large-scale Back to the Future DeLorean, designed for use with Power Functions."
In order to make it into the review stage a proposed project must receive backing from at least 10,000 supporters. Reviews are held three times a year (previously four) and so far seven projects have been approved.
My thoughts on the new round of finalists: Sherlock doesn't seem to have the world-wide appeal that most LEGO sets have. Harmony Gold is notoriously difficult to work with and could prevent the Macross set from winning. This is the third time Zelda has had a set in the finals, this set may not fair any better, especially if K'nex has the Nintendo license. The Japanese architecture stands a strong chance as LEGO has done similar sets like this before, plus the first two finalists were the Shinkai research sub and the Hayabusa asteroid research spacecraft. Adventure Time seems like a strong possibility as well since the series lends itself well to blocks figures. The UCS DeLorean is different enough from the previous winner that it could stand to win a second time.
So what do you think, any of these sets look like something you'd buy. I don't normally buy LEGO's, but even I might shell out the money for that Valkyrie.

intellectual-tipster: So by my house is an ice cream place...
So by my house is an ice cream place called ChillN. It makes ice cream that’s frozen using LIQUID NITROGEN! So they get the base - ice cream or frozen yogurt - and then they add the flavor (say you order Nutella ice cream, they add actual Nutella to the base. Same for the other favors). Then, they put it into these mixing bowls and start mixing, and then in the middle of mixing they just shoot out a bunch of Nitrogen and I swear to God that shit looks like a fucking witch’s cauldron. After that, they add the “Mix-N’s,” and there you go. Fucking Nitrogen ice cream. The reason is that since it cools it super fast, the ice crystals don’t grow as big so that you get INCREDIBLY smooth ice cream. It’s literally the coolest shit ever.

Oh Nothing, Just Maisie Williams, aka Arya Stark, Stabbing a Red Wedding Cake With a Sword
The event: The UK Game of Thrones season three DVD/Blu-ray release party. The cake: By Choccywoccydoodah. The emotion: Courtesy of Maisie Williams showing what she thinks of the Red Wedding by stabbing the cake with a sword. It’s so funny, why am I crying?
Hit the jump for a few more shots of this confectionary embodiment of pain and misery (but it sure looks tasty!).
“The daggers, swords and arrows were all created from chocolate, plunged into the cake and chocolate, revealing weeping bloody wounds,” said Choccywoccydoodah founder Christine Taylor. Stahp.

Client: I want a mascot that appeals to both male AND female viewers!
I make a motherly figure.
Client: …. Obviously, she’s too fat. Can you make her look like a blonde Wonder Woman?
Against my better judgement, I do.
Client: Make her breasts bigger too! And let’s make those daisy dukes, and we’ll have her holding a shotgun!

8 Badass Photos From the Real-Life "Monuments Men"—Who Saved Art and Treasure From the Nazis
kateWe are seeing this movie.
On Friday, George Clooney's new film, The Monuments Men, hits theaters. It's based on the true story of the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives (MFAA) program (whose men and women were known as "Monuments Men") established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1943 to help rescue art and cultural property from obliteration during World War II. The Monuments Men included servicemembers and art historians who aided in tracking down, identifying, and returning priceless works of art stolen by Hitler's forces.
Here's an example of their heroic efforts being used during the Nuremberg Trials as evidence of the Nazi's large-scale looting of cultural treasures:
Before you decide whether or not to see Clooney's film (which also stars Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, John Goodman, and Jean Dujardin), here are some badass photos of the real-life Monuments Men and other members of the US armed forces as they uncovered hidden and stolen art and treasure:

UPDATE, February 11, 2014, 1:53 p.m. EST: Bob Clark, the supervisory archivist at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library, emailed me a PDF of the following approval document initialed by President Roosevelt. This initialed memorandum essentially created the Monuments Men. "In customary fashion, President Roosevelt initialed and 'OK'd' the memorandum proposing the creation of the commission that had been prepared by Secretary of State Cordell Hull," Clark writes. "In the Roosevelt administration, FDR's 'OK' on a document was considered presidential consent for the action proposed in the document. Subsequent to the President's approval, membership on the commission was finalized and on August 20, 1943, a press release was issued by the Department of State announcing the creation of the American Commission for the Protection and Salvage of Artistic and Historic Monuments in Europe."
The approved memorandum is four pages. Here's the initialed first page:
Now, here's a trailer for Clooney's The Monuments Men:
