Comics About Feminism's Big "Buts"

by Tim J Luddy
Cartoon by MariNaomi
"Feminist, adj" by MariNaomi

For their new comics anthology, The Big Feminist But: Comics about Women, Men and the IFs, ANDs & BUTs of Feminism, editors Shannon O'Leary and Joan Reilly enlisted a group of artists and writers ranging from their mid-20s to mid-40s to submit comics dealing with their ideas, experiences, and impressions of feminism. The artists' ages place them as having come of age during or after the "Third Wave" of feminism that emerged in the '90s. Accordingly, the book's title refers to the often-heard phrases "I'm a feminist, BUT..." and "I'm not a feminist, BUT..." and the resulting work utilizes a range of forms to both explore and critique traditional feminist themes and even question the idea of doing a feminist comics anthology now.

No one theme or approach dominates here. There are first-person explorations of some fairly classic issues done in ways that attempt to defy certainty: In "Boy's Life," Bitch magazine cofounder Andi Zeisler says, "I definitely don't have any illusions about raising the perfect feminist son. I'm not sure what that would even look like," while the accompanying drawing wryly undercuts her message by depicting her son asking his enthralled mom, "Can I learn to bake?" Many of the artists appear to be looking for ways to address traditional feminist topics and gender roles without being subsumed by them. "Queer, Eh?" by Virginia Paine, is about a young woman who's looking for a word to describe her sexuality, and is delighted to find that "non-identifying" is indeed "a thing." And in "Prostitution: for Teens" by Jen Wang, the main character explores the ramifications of writing a non-judgmental young adult novel whose heroes are teenage prostitutes.

Anti-Potter...

by noreply@blogger.com (Honor Hunter)

Someone should really hire me at the Mouse...

Yet another project I mentioned would be a good thing to adapt has finally started happening under Alan Horn.  For those of you that haven't heard, Walt Disney Pictures is partnering with Harvey Weinstein to make an adaptation of the fantasy novel series, "Artemis Fowl" as a potential new Mouse franchise.  Yes, the dreaded F word: the holy grail to most studio suits all around Tinseltown.

For those that haven't heard of the character, Artemis is a multimillionaire, twelve year old boy with a criminal mind bent on restoring his family's former glory.  To do that, he actually concocts a magical heist involving fairies.  At least that's the basic plot of the first book.  The film will be based on the first and second book.  I don't know why they couldn't just make the film out if the first one.  At least they have a talented writer to adapt it in Michael Goldenberg ("Harry Potter and the Orde of The Phoenix").

The popular eight book series created by Eoin Colfer is a very engrossing world that, if done right, could be a great addition to the fantasy creations of Disney.  And I'm sure the Suits would love to have this be the first in a long line of films.  Not to mention attractions, games, shirts, shoes, toys, comics, etc.

And maybe even more books...

"Attack on Titan" Sand Sculpture Celebrates Release of Latest Manga Collection

by Scott Green

With volume 11 of the Attack on Titan hitting Japan on August 9th, sand sculptor Hosaka Toshihiko ventured outside the walls on a trip to Enoshima Higashihama beach to construct a tribute sculpture out of 80 tons of sand. The finished work measured 5.4m×4.2m×3m, with a spray of natural ingredients such as milk used to fix the material.

A time lapse film is being compiled by Kenta  Matsuo.

Imagi's Unused 'The Legend Of Zelda' CG Animated Movie Pitch Pops Online [Video]

by Caleb Goellner
kate

Rather impressive!

A lot of fans are familiar with the fate of Imagi, the CG animation studio behind TMNTAstro Boy and would-have-been Gatchaman that shut down in 2010. But did you know the studio also pitched a CG animated The Legend of Zelda movie to Nintendo in 2007?

Nintendo ultimately decided not to move forward with the Twilight Princess-era project, but former Imagi employee Adam Holmes, who supervised, shot and edited the pitch, has posted the footage online as part of his portfolio. It's a neat look at what might have been as it features an armored (and armed) Zelda. Sadly, though, there's not a single "Excuuuuuse me, princess" to be heard. You can see what you make of the footage after the jump.

Lego Mindstorms EV3 Review: So Awesome

The latest Lego Mindstorms set is totally mind-blowing. You can command 5 different model robots with WiFi, bluetooth or smartphone. The programming capabilities are endless. We've reached out to Lego, but so far no official statement on whether the EV3 comes preprogrammed to obey Asimov's Laws of Robotics.

Twice now, a client has loudly complained that he can’t complete his work because he is on a Mac and can’t right-click. I explained to him that if he were to hold Control and click simultaneously, it will provide the same options as right-clicking. These instructions stump him, and so I had to go and point out the Control-key on his laptop. At which point he looked blankly at the keyboard before indignantly saying:

Client: Obviously, but where is click?

The Ongoing Conversation About The Perception of Artists in Comics

by david brothers

There’s a conversation going on in comics right now that I think is very interesting. It’s about the role, responsibilities, and perception of the artist—mostly pencillers/inkers, but colorists and letterers as well—in the comics industry. It’s wide-ranging, and I thought it would be beneficial to gather most of the posts to date in one place, both for any journalists who are thinking about writing about it and other people who are curious, but don’t know where to start. A lot of these posts are responses to or build off other conversations.

I don’t have everything. Twitter’s a big part of the conversation, as is tumblr, but it’s impossible to stay on top of everything, especially as more voices start talking. This is just the beginning. If you see a link I haven’t posted, drop a comment below.

-Declan Shalvey, comics artist, answers a tumblr question about comics reviews before talking a bit about how reviewers talk about art.

-Andy Khouri, writer about comics, explored Brian Stelfreeze’s work on Day Men, and what that may mean for comics artists in general. He talks about how we credit artists, how we credit writers, and how basic logistics often forces artists into complicated situations.

-Dennis Culver, artist, rounded up a few tweets he made on the subject of critics, artists, and comics. It spins from how critics do their job to why artists should be considered co-authors/storytellers, and why talking about art is vital.

-I wrote about Andy and Dennis’s posts, quoting Dennis’s in its entirety, and added my own thoughts on how we appreciate artists in comics from the perspective of a fan and critic.

-Amy Reeder, artist, responds to and builds on my post and talks about what drives her to buy comics, and talks about the greater trend of undervaluing artists.

-Amy Reeder & Brandon Montclare, collaborators, discuss their experience at San Diego Comic-con 2013 and also the role of the artist in production.

-Sarah Horrocks, artist, talks about her frustrations with certain aspects of the comics industry, springboarding off this Steven Grant essay at CBR.

-Nolan T Jones, writer, takes issue with a few of Horrocks’s points and speaks from the perspective of a writer on the subject.

-Sloane Leong, artist, talks about comics industry logistics by way of a Pacific Rim graphic novel, and talks about why the assembly line method of making comics actually hurts the artform.

-Amy Reeder & Brandon Montclare, collaborators, talk specifically about the role of artists in comics, with plenty of frank talk from writer Montclare and artist Reeder on their expectations and frustrations.

-Podcaster Pat Loika gathers artists Gabriel Hardman, Reilly Brown, Declan Shalvey, and Nick Pitarra to talk about the subject du jour in a conversation that’s as pointed as it is funny.

-Dennis Culver, artist, gathers more tweets, this time discussing the economics of being a comics artist and the relationship between writers and artists.

-Costa Koutsoutis, writer, replies to Dennis Culver’s recent post about economics and discusses the effort writers put forth in creating scripts.

-Leia Weathington, writer, talks about her position when it comes to working with artists and honor. Weathington’s response was sparked by a tweet conversation that I believe begins here before fracturing all over the place. This was packaged into Storify from Weathington’s tweets by Erika Moen, an artist.

-Declan Shalvey, comics artist, discusses working as an artist in the comics industry.

Additions:
-Michael May, writer about comics, builds off a statement from Declan Shalvey and talks about why reviewers need to talk more about art.

-Sloane Leong, artist, discusses the differences in responsibility between writers and artists and looks at the various options creators have for deals.

-Paul Allor, writer, talks about writers and artists from the POV of a working & aspiring writer, in addition to talking about the ways writers view working with and paying artists.

-Paul Allor, writer, talks about the unique aspects of comics collaboration and explores ideas about the way credit is divvied up or displayed.

-Bryan Hitch, artist, talks to Kiel Phegley at CBR about working on corporate comics and feeling underappreciated, despite his history with the company and position in the industry.

-Pat Barrett, artist, talks about the New Yorker improperly crediting a drawing of Iron Man and (briefly) their history with comics.

-Shea Hennum, writer about comics, looks at the idea of visual consistency, particularly in terms of Prophet, a comic with a fistful of artists on regular duty.Similar Posts:

Del Toro Enlists 'Blood: The Last Vampire' And 'Metal Gear' Artists For 'Pacific Rim' Posters

by Charles Webb

pacific-rim-shinkawa-hdr

"Pacific Rim" wore its anime and Japanese science action influences where everyone could see them (I don't know how many people I came across pointing out the "Evangelion" comparisons). Well, director Guillermo del Toro went a step further, commissioning a pair of posters from famed Japanese illustrators Katsuya Terada and Yoji Shinkawa to honor the the film's release.

First, there's Yoji Shinkawa's piece promoting the Japanese Real 3D release of "Pacific Rim," depicting Jager Gipsy Danger standing over a defeated kaiju. Shinkawa's work should be familiar to fans of Kojima Productions titles "Zone of the Enders" and "Metal Gear Solid." And this is a cool thing I didn't know about his work: he provided the monster designs for Ryuhei Kitamura's ("Versus") "Godzilla: Final Wars," which was Toho's last film in the kaiju series as they made plans to retire the franchise for a few years.

pacific-rim-shinkawa

Next up is this piece by occasional "Nintendo Power" artist Katsuya Terada. While that's how many fans of a certain age were introduced to him here in the West, his big project is the enduring "Blood: The Last Vampire," which has been both animated in a feature and series as brought to the big screen in a live-action film.

So which one is your pick?

Real Action Hero Link and "Fire Emblem" Marth Figma on the Way

by Joseph Luster

We've shared a few of the treats from this summer's Wonder Festival, but there's even more figure goodness to look forward to for Nintendo fans. As seen on Inside Games, one of the impressive displays on hand was MediCom's Real Action Hero Link figure, sporting his likeness from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

There's also a Fire Emblem: Awakening Marth Figma on the way, as previewed in Max Factory's teaser image below.

Those who fancy Nendoroids can look forward to some based on Luigi and the Wind Waker version of Link, as seen in the promo pic Akiba Hobby captured

Wonder Festival 2013 Summer: Medicos Entertainment

by Tianxiao Ma
kate

Tons of Jojo's.

Medicos Entertainment hit the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure license. They hit it hard. You'll see plenty of its cast: Gold Experience, Josuke, Soft & Wet, Moody Blues, Leone, King Crimson, (my favorite) Rudol Von Stroheim with the machine gun stomach, and more. I have to say, for a manga with such diverse and insane character designs, they do have a bit of sameface going on.

The sole non-Jojo figure came as a surprise: a figure of Ame, Hana, and Yuki from Wolf Children. Being a Mamoru Hosoda fan, I'm happy to see his work represented in a pretty adorable little figure.

That does it for Medicos; check out the gallery for all of the craziness!

Wonder Festival 2013 Summer: Sega prize figures

by Tianxiao Ma
kate

Some weird Attack on Titan stuff. Also Fist of the North Star.

Sega always has a diverse assortment of prize figures to peddle. Their booth at WonFes reached all the way across the ocean for some Pixar and Disney figures to go alongside the licensed Japanese ones.

Toy Story, Monsters University, and The Nightmare Before Christmas all got love with standard size prize figures. Many Disney characters also got miniatures: Buzz Lightyear, Wall-E, Nemo, and others.

Anime fans need not fret; there was plenty for you from Sega. Fist of the North Star got some burly man-figures. Shingeki no Kyojin busts were on display. Evangelion 3.0 figures made an appearance, as well as the female pilots in race queen outfits. I'm starting to think prize figures are the only way to get Evangelion 3.0 merchandise these days without breaking the bank...

Sega also tapped into disparate licenses going from their own Vocaloids to Nadesico, Gunbuster, OreImo, Railgun/Index, Upotte, Nyaruko-san, and Nisemonogatari. There really was something for everyone!

Pre-order Nendoroid Colossal Titan and terrorise humanity

by Martin Siggers

Just a few days after Good Smile blew out WonFes with Attack on Titan merchandise, the first fruits of their labour are going up for pre-order in the form of the Colossal Titan Nendoroid. I've gotta say this guy looks great, that nasty muscles-and-bones face translating very well to the super-deformed style.

Really though, the figure itself is only half the story, as he also comes with the Attack on Titan Playset, perhaps the most delightful batch of accessories ever bundled with a Nendoroid. There's a slice of the city, complete with gigantic wall for your Titan to menacingly loom over. There are iniature figures of the smaller titans who can roam wild between the houses. There're even more miniature figures of the humans, some of whom can be gripped and eaten by the smaller Titans, others of whom are decked out in 3D Maneuver Gear, ready to fight back. Smoke cloud effects are here too, some of which can be attached to the miniature figures and used as stands to portray them flying through the air.

It all adds up to an irresistible package, and the good news is these extras don't grossly inflate the price either, though at ¥4,572 you'll pay a little more than standard Nendoroid cost. For anyone wanting even more details, newly minted GSC blogger Kahotan has posted up a preview as well. I suspect a lot of you are already decided though, so hit those links below and wait in anticipation of a December release.

Thrillbent Offers Direct DRM-Free PDF Downloads

by Rich Johnston

Mark Waid, of Thrillbent has announced the opening of the Thrillbent store, allowing people to pay to download PDF versions of the Thrillbent comics they have been offering for free in CBZ format.

And, in a model that seems to echo Bryan K Vaughan and Marcos Martin‘s Private Eye digital comic, they are DRM-free and, for Insufferable at least, readers can pay what they wish.

This model may be coming more popular, stories about the patent on ComiXology’s Guided View being threatened and claimed by Marvel/Disney could potentially make such systems financially erroneous to use, and with increased resolution displays, may even become unnecessary. Following Image Comics, this kind of approach may come more and more common. Waid writes;

Weekly CBZ files are still free to download for now, but buying the PDFs gives you exclusive bonus content designed specifically for each comic, including new covers, clickable hotlinks, behind-the-scenes essays and art, and more. Moreover, if you like what we do here at Thrillbent, these purchases are a relatively inexpensive way to show your support if you’re so inclined. I’ve said it a thousand times–we’re in this to make comics, not to maximize personal profits–but receiving money from fans and readers who feel like we’re giving them something of value in return, that’s what allows us to keep going.

Waid also announced that Aw Yeah Comics! would spearhead the launch of Thrillbent For Kids.

Twitter Ignores Rape Threats Aimed at Anita Sarkeesian

by james_fudge

Apparently it is just fine and dandy with Twitter if you threaten to rape someone on its service. Feminist Frequency creator Anita Sarkeesian receives her fair share of vile threats on Twitter on a regular basis, but when she reports them to Twitter it doesn't seem to do anything about them. On her Twitter feed yesterday she noted that she reported several threatening tweets to Twitter and was awaiting a response. Today she received that response, which was a big surprise to anyone who read the example tweet she posted.

Yeah, apparently Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai said in his bi-weekly column in Weekly Famitsu that story mode and CG cutscenes would be eliminated from the next game because the movie scenes from it were uploaded onto the Internet. Yeah, that's really the reason for it.

Nathan Fillion reprises his  featured role as Green Lantern Hal Jordan in “Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox”.  Its his third time out playing the Power Ring wielding Super Hero. The two previous  films Fillion fans can find him in are “Green Lantern: Emerald Knights” and “Justice League of America: Doom”

That's where the soon-to-launch Pullist plans to come in.
