peach melba popsicles

by deb
peach melba popsicles When I moved to New York City 16 years ago I am pretty sure that on some level I believed if I went far enough above 14th Street with money I did not have, I'd reenter some gauzy version of New York from the past, you know, stuffy restaurants with tufted leather banquettes, paintings in gilded frames, black and white tiled floors and stories about when Sinatra was a regular. Places where mutton chops, Lobster Newburg, Baked Alaska and things in champagne cream sauce never went off the menu. It's not entirely clear to me why I thought I was moving to 1950 but needless to say, in the actual New York City I moved to, my first years were filled with the typical stuff, a walkup apartment in an illegal sublet, a terrible job, a lot of wine, virtually no hangovers (because: youth) and a lot of five-dumplings-for-a-dollar and $1.50 slices at 1 a.m. what you'll need, plus some sugar and water I still love those old-fashioned places, though, and I have yet to find peach melba on a menu. It's too bad; I realize it sounds dreadful, like something an ancient aunt named Melba would eat or worse, something someone snuck melba toast into (fair enough, as they're named after the same person), thinking we wouldn't notice, but as it's in fact a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a poached peach half and a cascade of tart raspberry sauce, it's probably the most August dessert, ever. Escoffier created the dessert in 1892 for a dinner party to honor the opera singer Nellie Melba, who was performing in Covent Garden. Wikipedia says that an ice sculpture of a swan, which had been featured in the opera, carried peaches that rested on a bowl of vanilla ice cream topped with spun sugar but was later replaced with raspberry purée.

Glider Joey Gets Special Care at Taronga Zoo

by Andrew Bleiman

YBG Joey 1_Photo by Paul Fahy

A tiny Yellow-bellied Glider joey has found a surrogate mum at Taronga Zoo, after the joey and her mother survived a collision with a barbed-wire fence.

Taronga vet nurse, Felicity Evans, has been providing round-the-clock care to the female joey, carrying a makeshift pouch and feeding her six times a day from a dessert spoon.

“She gets really excited about food and can be quite a messy eater. She’ll grab hold of the spoon and pull it down so she ends up with milk all over her paws and stomach. I have to carefully clean her fur afterwards and wipe off her little milk moustache,” said Felicity.

The 10-week-old Glider and her mother arrived at Taronga Wildlife Hospital in early July after being rescued by WIRES wildlife carers on the Central Coast.

The mother was found with a series of injuries, including a major tear in her gliding membrane (the joey still inside her pouch), after becoming entangled in a barbed-wire fence. She had also stopped producing milk, forcing hospital staff to step in to care for the joey.

The yet-to-be-named joey has since made a remarkable recovery in Felicity’s care, growing from 48 grams to 80 grams in two weeks.

“She’s got a big personality for such a tiny animal. She climbs all over me and is very vocal if I have to wake her up for a feed. She doesn’t like being interrupted during sleep,” said Felicity.

The joey will remain in Felicity’s care for another few months, as she grows and gradually transitions to eating a special Glider mix and solid foods, such as fruit and fly pupae. The joey’s mother is also on the mend at Taronga Wildlife Hospital, where she continues to receive antibiotics and treatment for her wounds.

“Mum is eating well and healing nicely. Her range of movement is restricted, but she’s working out what she can and can’t do and getting better with practice,” said Felicity.

Unable to be released due to the extent of her injuries, the mother will remain in care at Taronga where she will become an important ambassador for her species.

Also known as the Fluffy Glider, Yellow-bellied Gliders have remarkably soft fur and can glide up to 140 metres in a single leap. Listed as a vulnerable species due to habitat loss, they can still be found in bushland at the edge of Sydney, such as Bouddi National Park.

More adorable pics, below the fold!

Ok I generally hate this line but that one that is just a big glove is hilarious and I'll probably buy it .

Just two days ago we revealed the next wave of Mighty Micros for DC, and now we have the Marvel variants to go along with them. The Twitter post announcing this morning them didn’t include names, but looking at the pictures we assume they will be Iron Man Vs. Thanos, Spider-man Vs. Scorpion, and Wolverine Vs. Magneto. Like the DC versions, these will probably be on display at at San Diego Comic Con in July and will retail for $9.99 USD.

Kisses, Anticipation, and the Lost Art of Identifying

by Jamie Madigan

Used to be, when you looted a chest and found a magic weapon, you had to take it back to town to identify it. You can’t see me, but I’m pulling my pants up to my armpits and waving my cane around as I type that. But it’s true, and I remember often feeling a great sense of anticipation as I carried something around with me for a few minutes or even hours before I could find out what it was and use it. It’s something I think has largely been lost in modern games, where everything is identified either immediately or with a couple of clicks. I think something may have gotten lost.

To understand why, let’s talk about sucking face with famous people.

Image credit: SquakyFoo. You know who you are.

Image credit: SquakyFoo. You know who you are.

And by that, I mean let’s talk about a study by the economist George Loewenstein.1 In that study Loewenstein was interested in how anticipation affected how much people valued something they would get in the future. Among other things, he asked subjects how much they would pay to “obtain a kiss from a movie star of your choice.” 2 Conditions were varied so that subjects anticipated getting the smooch immediately, or after a wait of either one day, two days, a year, or ten years.

You might think that people were willing to pay the most to get the kiss immediately. Or maybe give me a day to brush my teeth and put on a clean shirt. Why wait longer? But it turned out that subjects were willing to pay the most for a kiss that was going to be three whole days in coming.

Anticipation of pleasure, it turns out, has value.

Figure showing how much people would pay to get/avoid a reward/punishment after different delays. Taken from Lowenstein (1987).

Figure showing how much people would pay to get/avoid a reward/punishment after different delays. Taken from Lowenstein (1987).

This is why I wonder if the lost art of identifying loot in video games is causing us to miss out on some pleasure from anticipation. Would we get more net pleasure out of waiting to see what we got and a chance to use it? Or what about level caps on equipment? Those have always felt annoying to me, but maybe I’m not being optimistic enough and maybe I’m looking at it wrong. Maybe that awesome sword of the spiffy shield that I won’t be able to use until I’m level 18 have some value when I’m level 16.

Loewenstein notes that you can make this anticipation effect stronger by helping people vividly imagine what’s coming. Games that let you preview what cosmetic items will look like or how new equipment will behave could accomplish this. You wouldn’t have to imagine it. You could see it right there.

It also makes me think of the progress bars for developing new technologies in Metal Gear Solid V. In that game, you can start research projects that are completed in real time –not in game time. You literally have to wait a certain number of hours for a progress bar to fill up before a new shotgun or rocket launcher is available. Does waiting for that stuff increase the amount of pleasure we get from it? I may think that I’d rather have it right away, but as a human brain piloting a sack of meat and bones, I’m a notoriously bad judge of such things.

Steve Buscemi is a famous celebrity. I'm just sayin'.

Steve Buscemi is a famous celebrity. I’m just sayin’.

Given the study above, I have to think …maybe I’d be happier if I waited. In Loewenstein’s study, the kiss and other anticipations he experimented with (a painful shock, receiving or losing money) were experiences that came and went pretty quickly. You don’t keep a kiss after you get it. It’s an experience, not a possession. Loewenstein remarks that “delaying is more likely when consumption is fleeting.”3 So maybe, in the case of video games, the value of anticipation would be greatest when the prize is also fleeting, like taking place in a tournament, playing against or alongside a celebrity YouTube or Twitch streamer, receiving consumable boosters, or playing in a closed beta test.

Some fun things to experiment with, though, if you’re a game designer. Or maybe just anticipate experimenting with them. That would be fun, too.

Hillary Clinton for President

Caseymalone

"The question is, what is her ambition? To make money? Impossible. She’s doing fine. "

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOOOOOOOOOOOOOU

Hillary Clinton will be a fine president but the argument that she's already rich so gaining more wealth is unappealing and therefore she's incorruptible is disgusting and repugnant and makes me so angry on a fundemental level. I'M NUDE AND RED.

hodgman:

This is going to disappoint some of my friends, and maybe that’s why I’ve been quiet about this until now.

Also, who cares what I think?

But here is what I think: Hillary Clinton for President.

I think Sen. Bernie Sanders has been an inspiring, provocative, necessary, and admirable public servant for decades.

I respect the personal moral and practical math that has led each of his supporters to turn out for him. And I’m grateful to and a little in awe of the movement for keeping issues I care about at the center of this race.

But I have done my own moral and practical math, and I have decided that I would really, actively like to see a Hillary Clinton presidency.

I have grown up with her in my political life. There have been times I have supported her and not supported her. I appreciate that she has made big mistakes, both in office and while seeking it.

And she has made enormous, at times disheartening compromises and changed positions. But I don’t think she has done worse than anyone who seriously wishes to win office in our present system.

There is no question that she is personally ambitious, though she is one of the few candidates who is ever blamed for it.

The question is, what is her ambition? To make money? Impossible. She’s doing fine. To get power? She’s had it. To get ALL the power, because she is power mad? That’s a creepy conspiracy theory that doesn’t ring true to me.

I think her ambition is, and has long been, to be the President of the United States, like everyone else in the race, and also to make policy.

I think it’s reasonable to say based on her career that she likes making policy.

Moreover, I think she wants to make the best policy possible in an antagonistic-by-design political process that she has known and wrestled with for decades, and keep that policy in place.

Moreover, I think she wants to make policy that I largely agree with.

And I think she can do it.

No one can succeed 100% of the time in our system. But I think she can foster policies that will capitalize on the initial gains made by President Obama, whom I supported and still do, and surely, if slowly, move our nation closer to the ideals that I embrace.

Will it be fast? No. But there is a lot to do to shift the the nation’s policies back after the slow, economically rightward/socially intolerant swing that began with Ronald Reagan and peaked with the reelection of George W. Bush in 2004.

(A swing, by the way, that was patiently planned, deliberately funded, and slow by design. Major change is ALWAYS incremental. Unless you want to have a REAL revolution, with shooting and stuff. You might. I do not.)

Just because the social and economic right wing are in flailing, comic disarray at the moment, it doesn’t mean they are not a force. Or that conservative voters are not still our friends, family, neighbors, and fellow citizens.

I don’t think this is a time to laugh at the Republican party.

I think it is a moment to consolidate and continue our gains, enact new progressive policies; let existing progressive policies mature in place; offer independent and new voters the allure of continuity, professionalism, and effectiveness; and gradually regain the congress.

(This makes me sound pretty conservative for a liberal! And maybe that’s just who I am now in my 45th year as a human)

I will certainly vote for and work for Sen. Sanders should he gain the nomination.

But today I am voting for Hillary Clinton.

Yes, she has wanted this job for a long time. There is no crime in that. It’s in the constitution! I think she’s earned it. And while I cannot predict the future, I am curious and eager to see what she does once she gets it.

So that’s what I think.

I trust you think differently. We are different humans.

I don’t wish to discuss this online, but if you see me on the street, I’d be happy to talk to you about it.

In any case, please vote, and

thank you for your attention, and

That is all.

AP Style Alert: Don't Capitalize Internet and Web Anymore

by EditorDavid
Saturday the Associated Press announced they're changing the rules in their influential stylebook: the words "internet" and "web" should no longer be capitalized. "The changes reflect a growing trend toward lowercasing both words," their standards editor told Poynter.org, pointing out that both words "have become generic terms." Words tend to be lowercased as their usage becomes more common, and Poynter.org points out that "In 2011, e-mail became email... in 2010, Web site became website." In 2013 the AP even revised their usage of the term "illegal immigration," advising "use illegal only to refer to an action, not a person: illegal immigration, but not illegal immigrant," as part of a push towards'ridding the Stylebook of labels."
