New Gameplay: The Invisible World of rain

by Dais Kawaguchi
Paul Brownlee

Well this looks interesting.

Hi everyone! It’s been a while since we made the announcement of rain at Gamescom, but ever since then, we have been working hard to ensure the wait for more information was worthwhile.

rain was developed by the creative minds from PlayStation C.A.M.P!, the team behind unique titles like TOKYO JUNGLE and echochrome. Rain evolved from a truly unique concept where an imaginative world comes to life once is starts raining.

Move your cursor over each image below to reveal the world of rain.

The story of rain is the enchanting tale about a boy who chases after a girl with an invisible silhouette. After discovering that the girl is being hunted by ghostly creatures, he embarks on his own journey into the mysterious world of rain to save her and discovers he has also become invisible. Players will play as the boy, whose silhouette can only be seen in the rain. Using the unique ability to appear and disappear under cover players must learn to navigate through the unknown to advance. Just like in the real world, what can be seen isn’t everything and using imagination is the only way to reveal the truth.

Throughout the game you will be challenged to think ahead and plan your movements to advance. For example, when you direct the boy underneath cover, he will disappear from enemy view, or to draw enemies away from your path you may need step into the rain to become visible or can pick up items to taunt them. More details will be shared on these mechanics and puzzles at a later date. However, we are pleased to share with you – for the first time – our first gameplay video from the beginning of the game, “The Children and the Night”. Watch the video at the top of this post, and make sure to turn your speakers up for the full experience!

The world of rain is full of “uncertainty” and as you play through the boy will experience both a sense of fear and excitement as he explores the unknown world. Told through an artistic approach to narration, rain’s expressive sounds, those of rainfall and splashing water, combined with this otherworldly tale is designed to awaken the sense of uncertainty and solitude inherent in every player as well.

This week for GDC we will also be showing our first live demo to media, so keep an eye out for even more news on rain. We are very excited to have shared these early details and are looking forward to providing you a deeper look at rain very soon.

A Steve Jobs Manga? Where are all the scantily clad girls, ridiculously impractical weapons/outrageous superpowers, and overly drawn out fighting tournament arcs?

Posted online is a preview of the first installment of Manga Taishō and Mari Yamazaki's manga bio of Steve Jobs.

LUFTRAUSERS Dogfights its Way to PS3 and PS Vita

This looks cool.

LUFTRAUSERS on PS3 and PS Vita

Hey there PlayStation.Blog, it’s been a few months! Last time we spoke was before we released Super Crate Box for PlayStation Mobile – and since then we’ve been working on games on other platforms. One of those games was LUFTRAUSERS, a dogfighting game about flying and building your own LUFTRAUSER airplane.

We’ll be honest with you – the reason this game is going to hit PS3 and PS Vita is because we loved working with Sony when we made Super Crate Box. We think both platforms are great and we obviously want you to be able to play our games – but we don’t like dealing with people that treat us as some sort of commercial asset only. We want to work with people that love games as much as we love working on them.

Think of it this way: we’re a two-man studio that is investing a lot of time into making a game about shooting airplanes that is fun, explosive and makes you feel like the best pilot in the world. We want to be spending time on that, not on having nitpicky negotiations about ‘does the game fulfill random checklist item three’.

We had to deal with barely any of that red tape. Thanks the team at Devolver Digital? (the same crew that are working with Dennaton Games to bring you Hotline Miami) and the people we’ve been working with at Sony, we’ve been able to get right to what matters most: making a fun game about airplanes for people to enjoy on their PlayStation devices. So instead of worrying about that sort of thing, we’ve been working hard to balance the game so you’re always in the heat of battle, we’ve been adding more impossible missions and most importantly, we’ve been making the plane crashes more satisfying.

Working on this game we slowly realized that that is what LUFTRAUSERS is about: it’s about being the best fighter pilot in the world. It’s about barely dodging that homing missile that would’ve ended your run just short of your high score. It’s about finishing a minute-long tense battle with a huge airship. It’s a fighter jet crashing into a boat and sinking it. And most importantly, it’s about doing all of the above in the span of seconds, while pulling acrobatic moves with the best airplane in the world.

And when it’s over and the dust clears from your glorious defeat, you head back into the hangar and think – ‘what if I tried it with a laser mounted instead of a machinegun?’

We can’t wait to see which of over 125 airplane combinations will be your favorite.

Dragon’s Crown trailer Creepy Renaissance-esque dudes!...

by 20xx

Vanillaware games always look great with the sprite work, but after Odin Sphere, I'm not too keen on their stuff. I'm willing to give them another shot with Dragon's Crown.

Dragon’s Crown trailer

Creepy Renaissance-esque dudes! Incredibly intricate shading! Also some butts! Dragon’s Crown looks like the absolute business. I’m so glad to see Vanillaware drift all the way into arcade-style stuff.

This comes out July 25 in Japan, and I’m seriously considering importing. Don’t need much language skill to hit stuff with a sword.

Mighty Switch Force 2 screens After a couple weeks of teasing...

by ericisawesome

Mighty Switch Force 2 screens

After a couple weeks of teasing the eShop sequel, Wayforward has released these first screens showing heroine Patricia Wagon making her return. Instead of capturing the law-breaking Hooligan Sisters, this time she’s joined a fire brigade to rescue the reformed girls across a series of burning stages.

It’s sort of a departure from the original game, but I’m alright with that. Like, what, you didn’t spot the warning in the title? And as rapper Lloyd Banks once told fellow musician 50 Cent, which he subsequently told us, “go ahead, switch the style up / If the niggas hate then let them hate and watch the money pile up.”

How Guys Will Use Google Glass

So my feeds finally got imported.

Once Google Glass does not require voice recognition and is completely discreet then, and only then, will the true creepsters embrace said technology. Until that time, they’ll only begrudgingly embrace it.
