Three interesting things about Summer Carnival ‘92:...

Oh it's out. *Goes to buy*

Three interesting things about Summer Carnival ‘92: Recca

  1. It’s out today in North America on 3DS.
  2. Nintendo is charging the standard $4.99 price for NES Virtual Console games, instead of tacking on the $1 “import tax” we used to see on Wii.
  3. The VC version is actually still published by Taxan – but under the name Kaga Electronics. Taxan still exists as a division of this electronics firm, but now acts as a manufacturer and exporter of electronics

Ready for "Hello Ladies"? Stephen Merchant certainly is.

Merchant -- who will star in HBO's new comedy as Stuart, a web designer who recently relocated to LA from England "in hopes of finding excitement, romance, and maybe even a soul mate" -- tweeted the below poster on Friday.

I too hope it doesn't end up sucking

New Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate trailer ⊟

I’m a bit wary about this Batman-vania for 3DS/PS Vita (the footage here is likely from the latter version), even with the involvement of Metroid Prime vets from Armature, but I’m digging what’s been shown so far. And while I know it’s a cost-saving measure, I’m also really into the Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel-style cutscenes.

Please be good.

Still waiting on this game

Bravely Default: For the Sequel

While we wait for Bravely Default: Flying Fairy to come out next yeer, this follow-up will ship in Japan this December. Don’t be fooled by the title, it’s actually an expansion of the original game — there’s some funny speculation that this release could be used to fund a full sequel.

Here’s what’s in the expanded game, according to Duckroll: new story events, adjusted controls, additional difficulty options, more save slots (three instead of one), an auto-mode to speed up battle, and support for old save files. The hope is that this is the version we’ll get in the West, which would explain the localization delay — the original released in Japan last October.

Katsuya Terada’s Legend of Zelda sketches ⊟

Scanned by History of Hyrule, these sketches of Adult Link and The Great Fairy come from Terada’s 2002 artbook Rakuga King. You can see more of the artist’s Zelda illustrations from the Nintendo Power Player’s Guides on HoH’s Flickr page. Credit to Kotaku for the link.

While we’re featuring Zelda art, you absolutely must check out and maybe buy Bill Mudron’s latest tribute to the SNES game, a 36x24” print/map detailing A Link to the Past’s Hyrule.

It’s available with both labeled and unlabeled variants.

Slow Jams (Yakety Sax edition)

by Rob Beschizza

In the languid wake of slowed-down Dolly Parton, Jason Kottke offers a splendid guide on how to make your own slow jams, with a few of his own to listen to. The trick, he writes, is to remember that music is keyed to specific frequencies--notes!--and failing to scale in accordance with them may produce uncanny results.

Here's the formula for slowing or speeding up a recording to shift the pitch but generally stay in tune:

(2 ^ (semitones change/12) - 1) *100 = Percent Change

So -- as one does when procrastinating from remunerative work -- I made an Excel spreadsheet. If you want to drop two semitones, you shift the speed down by 12.2462 percent; drop three, you shift by 18.9207 percent, which significantly changes the track.

For your enjoyment, I have already produced Slow Yakety Sax.
