by arcadehero

Happy weekend everyone. Today’s weekend post is a bit heavy on the VR application in the arcade space.

BBC – Could VR Bring Back The Games Arcade? : Developing technology is always part of the E3 talk and at this E3 event, VR popped up frequently. The potential that VR has in the amusement industry isn’t new to us and it was only in May that the world’s first VR Arcade conference was held. I know that just about every major arcade developer has been looking into applications for the tech for a while now so it will not be a surprise if we see even more setups at IAAPA this November than we saw last year.

As to the question that the BBC article presents, I think it depends on how you define bringing the arcade back. We’ve documented the large uptick in new arcade locations opening their doors over the past few years but a vast majority of them are bar/arcades with a focus on retro – not expensive high-end tech. VR often has cost and space requirements that most venues cannot handle. For things to end up like it was 1982, you really need compelling content that can only be provided by the tech and at a reasonable cost. Just throwing out anything VR and expecting it to rake in millions is not going to work just because of the hype machine. There are other issues but we’ll just leave it at it being a difficult balance to achieve that we’ll keep an eye on.

Simuline Introduces the 4DX VR Attraction – As one example of something now shipping for amusement facilities is the new Simuline 4DX VR ride. This is based on their X-Rider Motion Theater technology but uses a Samsung Gear VR for the display instead of the projectors. Unfortunately this promo doesn’t show the content at all, just shows the people being moved around. From what I’ve been told, just about any non-interactive VR program can work with the system although it wasn’t clear how that works on translating the motion correctly.

Spiderman Gets ColorDMD Support – ColorDMD continues to impress with their products, now supporting both versions of Stern Pinball’s Spiderman and Spiderman Vault Edition games. As always, the results are beautiful. Since we’re on the subject fo pinball for a moment, rumor has it that the next Vault Edition that Stern will release is TRON…but getting back to Spiderman, here are trailers for both editions. I like the Vault Edition more as the contrast from the art is nicer but that is down to the original content as opposed to ColorDMDs work.

Andamiro Working on Pump It Up Prime 2 – Announced at the Japan Pump It Up Fest 2016. Andamiro looking to make the game more appealing to Japanese players. More at Bemanistyle:

Rare TRON Cocktail on eBay – If you live in Ohio then here’s an arcade build you don’t see very often of a highly sought after game. TRON Cocktail Video Arcade Unit On eBay.

Flyer of the Week – Neo Mr. Do! : The Neo Geo MVS wasn’t all fighting games, with titles like Neo Mr. Do! providing some variety to the popular arcade system. Mr. Do! itself was a digging game that served as a rival to the likes of Dig Dug, although Mr. Do got a boost from unique variations to the original concept with titles like Mr. Do’s Castle or Mr. Do’s Wild Ride. For the Neo Geo remake, it also allowed co-op play; full flyer can be seen over at FlyerFever :

Stern Releases A Behind The Scenes Video For Ghostbusters Pinball

by arcadehero

Stern Pinball has previously produced some interesting videos to showcase a little bit of the “behind-the-scenes” interviews with their various game designers to give us players a glimpse into the process. Some of those videos are more detailed than others. If you are curious about the creation of the new Ghostbusters pinball machine by the hands of John Trudeau, Dwight Sullivan and others on the GB team, then check out this 14 min video. They detail how the process tends to start with the Pro model (“make it fun”), then improve from there to the Premium and Limited Edition models. They also point out how the Slimer toy was inspired by the Batman pinball crane toy and more. This media hasn’t been posted to Youtube yet so I have embedded it into the post; if you aren’t seeing anything then click here for a direct link.

What piece of information did you find to be the most interesting out of all of that?

The Summer Slowdown has begun so there hasn’t been much to discuss this week – until now of course. If you own an arcade or want to promote one, don’t forget to sign-up to our Arcade of the Week feature. It is a paid post but very low cost for the type of marketing coverage you get (I’ve personally paid a lot more just to post flyers in the mall where I am at). Also for upcoming stories, I did do an interview with Kevin Williams of The Stinger Report and the DNA Association a short time ago but it is taking time to work on as the sound was not very good on my end and the video needs some work as well. Either way, that should be finished this coming week. In the mean time, a few items for this weekend:

“Starfighter” at the Southern Fried Gameroom Expo + Celebrity Play: The Southern Fried Gameroom Expo took place this week and with it came the arrival of a Starfighter arcade cabinet that is based on the arcade game seen in 1984’s The Last Starfighter. For the Ted Hooper, the gentleman that built this as a homebrew project (he is known as Seawolf on the KLOV Forums), he got a special bonus by having actor Lance Guest (who played Alex Rogan in the film) stop by, play the game and give it his signature. Now that’s how you do an expo!

lancegueststarfighter

Here is an interview by Arcade Repair Tips with Seawolf about the project:

More from the Expo, in case you want to watch – tons of pinball to play there:

Also hanging out at the Expo is our friends over at Griffin Aerotech (Skycurser):

Rocky Mountain Pinball Showdown & Gameroom Expo Currently Happening in Colorado – Speaking of arcade expos, If you are anywhere near Denver, CO this weekend then be sure to check out the Rocky Mountain Pinball + Gameroom Expo that is currently taking place there. I haven’t seen any media pop-up for this one yet so we’ll keep an eye out for them.

Pump It Up Tracks Added To NEON FM – Crossovers on music is always a nice thing, here is a video showcasing the Pump It Up songs that have been added to Unit-E’s NEON FM so far:

New EM Game In Japan With A Rope – I shared this on another website and someone mentioned how reminded them of the more intense experience of having a drill instructor yelling at you while having to tie your combat boots…which would be an interesting twist on this idea if you wanted to make a Western version 😉

Popeye Gets A Homebrew Port To the ZX Spectrum – I’ve never seen a ZX Spectrum in person as that was not a computer that has much of a reach in the US. It was quite popular in the UK however and recently there seems to have been an uptick in developments for the system from what I have noticed including this new port of Nintendo’s Popeye arcade game. You can read more details about it at World Of Spectrum.

Flyer of the Week – Starblade: Since we have a little focus on The Last Starfighter for this post, what better arcade game to mention for our Flyer of the Week than a game that came rather close to the concept, Namco’s Starblade (yes, I know about Atari’s unreleased The Last Starfighter arcade project but that never had a flyer made for it). While it did feel like an FMV game met a light-gun game, they arcade cabinet produced a cool effect that helped the play feel more like a simulator. As this flyer pointed out, Namco called the effect their “Infinite Distant Projection System”. This game almost got a sequel with Operation Blue Planet. Check out the full flyer at Flyer Fever.

Name That Game #86 – We’ll be moving on this week as to the guesses instead of re-hashing but here are you answers for NTG#85B:

#1 – Fire Trap by Data East

#2 – Blazer by Namco

#3 – Lot Lot by Irem

This week’s guesses:

centimouth

punchingloop

shootinglines

On June 4th, 2016 the Tennessee Valley Railroad operated an all-day excursion to Summerville, GA using Southern Railway steam locomotives #630 and #4501 to pull the train. It was a hot and muggy day, but it still made for an amazing experience.
