Pushbullet now lets you hold full SMS conversations on your PC

by Quentyn Kennemer

pushbullet sms from pc

You thought Pushbullet’s last update was big? Well… it was, but this one is pretty damn cool, too! Pushbullet’s latest update has arrived over at Google Play, and it’ll enable you to have full SMS conversations with your friends from your Windows or Mac OSX PC. This is a step above simple SMS mirroring, which only allowed you to view conversations.

pushbullet sms pc

It’s yet another huge feature that makes Pushbullet as much of a rich messaging service as it is an easy link and file sharing one. Unfortunately this feature is only limited to SMS conversations at present moment, though that’s understandable considering not even Motorola has fully solved the PC-to-phone MMS hurdle.

All you’ll need for this new feature is the updated Pushbullet app for Android and the PC extensions/apps for your respective platform. Be sure to head here for download links (Google Play link is here) and give it a go.

Comcast Stream lets you stream thousands of shows and movies for $15 per month, no cable box required

by Quentyn Kennemer

stream-tablet-today-inline

Comcast today announced Stream, a new streaming service they’re rolling out for customers of their Xfinity internet. The big deal here is that internet-only customers can pay just $15 per month — with no added equipment, mind you — to stream content from about a dozen of Comcast’s networks.

Said networks include major broadcast channels such as NBC, Fox, CBS, The CW, Telemundo and Univision, and even some premium channels like HBO. Unfortunately Comcast didn’t see fit to share a full list just yet, but they boast that the amount of shows and movies you’ll have access to reaches the “thousands” mark (with much of that content coming through Streampix, Comcast’s Netflix-like streaming service).

There is one catch, though — the live TV service is only intended for use in the home, so you’ll only be able to use it if you’re connected to your Comcast-fueled network. That said, you do have the freedom to watch it on smartphones, tablets and smart TV apps, so there is a bit of freedom in how you access the content. You’ll also be able to watch any of the content you record through the company’s cloud-driven DVR service on the go, so there’s some wiggle room there, as well.

This may not be the cord cutter’s ultimate dream, but it’s a step in the right direction and we’re hoping Comcast has plans to flesh this thing out and take content delivery to the next level. The service will trial in Boston by the end of summer, with Chicago and Seattle planned by year’s end. Comcast expects it to spread nationwide beyond that if all goes well. You can sign up to be notified when the goods are available right here.

T-Mobile family plan members now get 10GB each; add a fourth line free through Labor Day

by Quentyn Kennemer

T-Mobile_store_610x407

T-Mobile’s latest Un-Carrier move is a big one. The company’s popular 2 lines for $100 deal bumps LTE data allowance up to a full 10GB at no extra charge per line. The previous allowance was about 4.5GB, so you’re getting more than double without having to pay a thing.

Don’t forget that adding lines is just $20 each, and each line you add will also get their own 10GB pool of data to eat from. To celebrate the occasion T-Mobile is putting on a special deal where you can add a 4th line for free, making a 4-line family plan just $120. That deal is available through Labor Day so there’s a fair bit of time to take advantage.

Of course, the other plan features remain the same, including unlimited data, talk and text, as well as all the great Un-Carrier stuff T-Mobile has dished out to date. The data bump is applied immediately starting today, while those who want to add that fourth line for free can head to Magenta tomorrow and get that squared away.

Google starts testing self-driving cars in Austin, Texas

by Quentyn Kennemer

austin texas sign

Google’s spent the entirety of the self-driving car project’s testing time in the familiar streets of Santa Clara, California, but now they’re so far along that they’re ready to start moving into other areas. The company has confirmed that the first test vehicle — a Lexus SUV, if you care — has touched down in Austin, Texas.

As usual, Google’s self-driving vehicle tests will go on with someone behind the wheel to take over manual controls when or if they need to. The challenge for Google will be to adapt to a vastly different driving environment and the traffic patterns of that specific city, but we’re sure it’s nothing they can’t handle.

By the end of it all, Google’s 3D object mapping technology should be able to gather enough information on the streets of Austin that it might eventually become the safest driver out there (especially because all of the 11 or so accidents they’ve been involved in so far weren’t their fault). Fingers crossed that things go smoothly!

The truth is on Twitter, where Fox has announced a 201-day countdown to the premiere of its X-Files revival on January 24, 2016 — and posted some bonus new footage of Mulder and Scully.

The network tweeted out a promo for its "201 Days of The X-Files," a revisit of the original series in preparation for the reboot's debut. Fox is counting down to the premiere of the next installment by spotlighting one episode per day, for a total of 201 (though that doesn't include the movies, The X-Files: Fight the Future or The X-Files: I Want to Believe). Here’s a first look at Google’s RideWith app for ride sharing [SCREENSHOTS]

by Quentyn Kennemer

ridewith banner

Yesterday we told you guys about Google’s pilot program for a ride sharing service that would help drivers and passengers connect for gas-saving commutes. Unfortunately the service — which is being called RideWith and is powered by crowd-sourced mapping app Waze — is only available in Israel to start. If things go well we could see it expand to other areas very quickly.

That doesn’t mean we can’t get a good look at the app ahead of its arrival, though. What we found was a neat, clean and easy interface for which to check up on your ride. You’re first whisked through a brief introduction:

ridewith 5 ridewith 6 ridewith 7 ridewith 8

And then it’s time to get a ride. For starters, there’s your standard profile view, which shows your photo, phone number, email address, commute type (and destination, if the app had let us enter our address) and whether you’re a “verified” user (it’s not clear how verification is determined).  We imagine the driver will be able to get a look at some of this information to make sure they know who they’re picking up.

ridewith 1

There’s also a Maps section which gives you real-time updates on the location of your ride. It likely uses the driver’s GPS so there’s next to nothing to do for either side to do in terms of overhead.

ridewith 3

Finally there’s the “Rides” tab, which presumably helps you find a driver who is capable of taking you to a destination on their way to work. Unfortunately this is where our access ended as you need to have an invite code to be able to use it. We do know that users will be able to pay for their ride through the app once they’ve gotten to their destination, though, so there’s no hassle when it comes to paying your driver.

ridewith 4

For what it’s worth, the app will use your phone number for signup purposes, though we’re assured this info is not shared with anyone and is only used to create a secure account (which we imagine means they’ll use some sort of SMS verification periodically).

If you’re curious to try the app for yourself you can actually download it through the Israeli Play Store by using a VPN, though without Google supporting service anywhere but that specific area it might not be worth your while. At the least, you now know what to expect if RideWith ever sees the light of day where you are.

Typically, when we feature Sarah DeRemer's artwork, we're weirded-out with her animal mashups. But this time we're going to peek into her dream state.

DeRemer manipulates ordinary photos to create odd and sometimes creepy, dream-like scenes by mixing two objects into unexpected mashups or manipulating seemingly ordinary objects into different visual elements.

DeRemer tells Mashable that some of the scenes were "created as an exploration into interesting combinations," while others simply portray scenes of interest. Either way, DeRemer continues to keep things strange, and we like it. Read more...

How does NYC fall? Catch up in the latest trailer for 'The Division'

by Adam Rosenberg
Td_screen_night_e3_140609_4pmpst_1402343529
Feed-twFeed-fb

The Division imagines a future New York City that's been torn apart by a viral epidemic, rendering central Manhattan a quarantined "Dark Zone."

The game's latest trailer takes a peek at how that happened, delivering a crash course on the twists and turns that led to Big Apple dwellers being walled into a government-sanctioned no man's land. It's not exactly a vacation spot, but players can expect to visit the Dark Zone frequently as they hunt for the sweet loot that's been abandoned there.

There's still a lot more to be revealed from Ubisoft's upcoming open world RPG. The game's focus on collecting loot and social play seems to take a page from Activision's wildly popular first-person shooter, Destiny, but the near-future NYC setting points to a more grounded experience. Leaked Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge Plus cases confirm upcoming design

by Chris Chavez

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus

Samsung is gearing up to launch XL versions of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. Better known as the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, it’s now being rumored that the Edge version could go by the name Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ (Plus) according to a recent trademark filing. We know, it’s a tad confusing and if there was any doubt that these devices would essentially look like bigger versions of the regular S6/Edge, freshly leaked case photos — and even a CAD render — are giving us a look at that now familiar S6 design.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 S6 Edge Plus

Both cases look almost identical to the regular-sized S6 and S6 Edge, only you’ll notice small cutouts on the Note 5 case (bottom 2 images) for the included S Pen. The images come from MobileDirect, a Romanian accessory maker who’s accurately leaked devices in the past.

Right now, rumors point to the Galaxy Note 5 as coming equipped with a 5.98-inch 4K Quad HD display, Exynos 7422 processor, USB Type-C port, and a beefy 4,100mAh battery. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ will be much smaller with a 5.5-inch screen, Snapdragon 808 processor, and 16MP rear/5MP front facing cameras. We’re still not sure when Samsung plans on making the devices official, but if history has taught us anything, we expect both of them to be revealed during IFA in September.

Sprint CEO: T-Mobile Un-Carrier is bullshit

by Quentyn Kennemer

t-mo sprint

It looks like T-Mobile’s edgy CEO John Legere isn’t the only man in his position with a loose tongue. Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure seems to have had a nerve stricken by Legere as a result of the Magenta man calling Sprint’s new All-In plans a “swing and a miss.”

marcelo claure headshot

And it wasn’t some politically correct PR drivel, either: Claure replied directly to Legere on Twitter with the following series of Tweets (combined for purposes of formatting):

@JohnLegere I am so tired of your Uncarrier bullshit when you are worse than the other two carriers together. Your cheap misleading lease imitation is a joke.

You trick people to believe that they have a 15 dollar iphone lease payment when it’s not true. You tell them they can upgrade up to 3x but you don’t tell them the price goes up to 27 dollars when they do.

You say one thing but behave completely different. It’s all a fake show. So its really #Tmobilelikehell.

End potentially-childish spat. John Legere has yet to reply to Claure’s spirited rant, though we imagine a response isn’t far off, and we’re sure the CEO won’t hold back when he does.

Whether Claure’s words are true are up to your own view of things. We certainly won’t bash him for his thoughts considering he probably knows better than anyone.

But we do know that the state of the American wireless industry was painfully stale and anti-consumer until T-Mobile’s Un-Carrier moves started, and that’s worth a whole lot more than an 80 word rant on how big of a meanie T-Mobile is for doing it.

Moto 360 gets permanent price cut to $150

by Quentyn Kennemer

Moto 360 screen

Deals, sales and refurbs, be damned: the Moto 360 is now $150 at both Google Play and Motorola’s website, and it won’t be jumping back up in price from here on out.

That’s a very nice price for a smart watch that still makes a big argument for being one of the primary Android Wear options available today. That said, you should keep in mind that this move was likely made due to the impending arrival of the sequel (which we expect to happen at some point next month).

Knowing that, though, if you’re still interested in buying one of these and haven’t been able to catch the many sales from weeks past, go ahead and grab one from either Motorola or Google Play.

Sugary drinks kill 184,000 people every year, study claims

Sugary drinks cause 184,000 deaths worldwide annually, including 25,000 deaths in the United States, according to a new study.

The finding — a revised estimate of numbers first presented at a scientific meeting in 2013 — represents a tally of deaths from diabetes, heart disease and cancer that scientists say can be directly attributed to the consumption of sweetened sodas, fruit drinks, sports/energy drinks and iced teas.

The numbers imply that sugary drinks can cause as many deaths annually as the flu.

"It should be a global priority to substantially reduce or eliminate sugar-sweetened beverages from the diet," said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, senior author of the study and dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Massachusetts. Read more...

The user interface is so similar to Snapchat, it's no wonder the company didn't didn't announce the new update with much fanfare.

Filters are only swipe-able on the status update screen. When you tap the magic wand icon in the lower left corner of the photo you wish to edit, you'll be taken to a screen with options for tagging friends, cropping, adding text and adding stickers. Read more...
