New York City Adds E-Cigarettes to Smoking Ban
The New York City Council today voted 43-8 to ban e-cigarettes in all locations where regular cigarettes are already prohibited, including restaurants, offices and beaches.
The ruling will push "vapers," as e-cigarette users are known, into the same designated areas as smokers. It will also require all "no smoking" signs be updated to include "no e-cigarette use." It comes after a contentious city council debate over the electronic devices.

"For the New York City Council to take it upon themselves, based solely on what appears to be unscientific evidence, is disappointing, and I think a disservice to adult smokers," Miguel Martin, president of e-cigarette company Logic, told Mashable. Read more...

When someone mentions performance-enhancing drugs, what comes to mind? For me, it's an image of two 'roided out home run hitters embracing on a baseball field. But as Adrien Broner might have discovered on Saturday night, the world of PEDs—which we traditionally associate with anabolic steroids and human growth hormone—is far more complex. And sometimes the results are instantaneous.
This Is What Alcohol Looks Like Under a Microscope
Turns out Great Uncle Phil was right all along: Concocting the perfect whiskey ginger nightcap really is an art form
A website called BevShots captures photographs of alcohol taken through the lens of a microscope. The rainbow-like patterns it produces are then converted into metallic prints, bar accessories and even clothing, meaning you can (almost literally) say you're wearing what you drink.
Granted, it's less this:

...and more this:

The idea dates back to the early '90s. Michael Davis, a research scientist at Florida State University, was looking for new ways to fund his lab. He'd compiled hundreds of photographs of DNA, biochemicals and vitamins from working for more than 20 years as a researcher, and figured they had the potential for commercial art. Read more...
More about Pics, Lists, Features, Science, and Dev DesignThis interactive Moto X magazine ad is pretty ingenious
Choose your Moto X color, now in a paper advertisement
Motorola is taking its increasingly-clever advertising into the print world. A new magazine ad for the Moto X will run in the January edition of Wired that goes a step above other plain-old printed paper advertisements. 150,000 issues distributed across New York and Chicago will contain a completely interactive Moto Maker experience, with touch points that change the color of a Moto X displayed prominently on the page.
The ad is made possible by paper-thin electronic elements that make up a battery, LEDs and even a keyboard-like membrane for the color selector. We've seen interactive ads in limited runs of magazines before, but this one just fits the Moto Maker idea so well. You can check out a video demo of the ad above.

Chuck Norris Tops Jean-Claude Van Damme's Epic Split
Tough guy Chuck Norris apparently couldn't resist trying to top Jean-Claude Van Damme's epic split for Volvo, though Chuck appears to have gotten some CGI help.
The action star appears in a holiday video from Hungarian animation firm Delov Digital, in which he recreates Van Damme's feat between two jets and with 11 soldiers on his shoulders
It's not clear if Norris worked with Delov on this. Reps from the firm could not be reached for comment
Still, it's more fuel for Chuck Norris Facts, the classic parody website. In light of Norris' other achievements there (did you know that when Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone he had three missed calls from Chuck Norris?), this isn't all that epic after all Read more...

Asus appears to be readying a new 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablet. While Dell and Lenovo have similar tablets on the market, Asus’ model may have one unique advantage: Wacom support. Mobile Geeks reports that the Asus VivoTab Note 8 is expected to include an 8-inch display at 1280 x 800 resolution with Wacom digitizer support and a stylus. It’s not clear if the stylus is optional, or whether it can be easily stored away, but some retail listings for the unreleased tablet mention Wacom compatibility. Mobile Geeks also notes that Asus’ tablet also includes Intel’s latest Bay Trail processor, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB or 64GB of storage options.
While the display isn’t high-resolution, if the Wacom support is accurate then this will be the...
Spotify brings a clean new look to the desktop
Spotify has started pushing out an update for its desktop client with a new aesthetic. We've tested out the refreshed app, and the starkest difference from the current version is a new darker theme; it's very dark, almost black in places, and the deep grays are accompanied by larger text across the UI, rounded graphics, and filtered artwork. The result of all the changes is a cleaner look for the app, but one that generally shows you less information.
Warner Bros. recruits Josh Gad to co-write and star in 'Gilligan's Island' movie
Warner Bros. is bringing Gilligan's Island, the iconic '60s television sitcom, to the big screen, and it's reportedly enlisted Josh Gad to help with the project. And while the move may reinforce the notion that movie studios have run out of novel ideas, Deadline reports that the film is also being positioned as a way of shining a brighter spotlight on Gad (Book of Mormon, Jobs). He'll be both writing and starring in the Gilligan's Island big-screen adaptation, and Lloyd Schwartz — whose father created the original TV series — has signed on as an executive producer. Gilligan's Island ran for only three seasons on CBS, but soared in popularity once it hit syndication. The show chronicles the comedic misfortunes of seven...
New Xbox documentary series will explore buried 'E.T.' cartridge legend
Microsoft has been putting together an eclectic selection of television series to launch exclusively on the Xbox next year, and today it's announcing an exciting new addition: a documentary series produced by Simon Chinn, producer of Man on Wire, and Jonathan Chinn, producer of Morgan Spurlock's 30 Days. The still-unnamed series will debut on the Xbox One and Xbox 360 next year, and will focus on how technology has changed entertainment, business, and the world at large.
Flying man in wingsuit flies deathly close to the ground like Superman
He's Superman. Actually, I take it back. I don't even think Superman would fly this impossibly close to the ground because it's just ridiculous. Insane, really. That didn't stop wingsuit pilot Brian Drake from zipping mere feet from the ground though. Look at him tear through the gully and marvel at death being defied. So awesome.
Instagram Direct Lets You Delete Photos From Others' Phones
Lost amid the recent news that Instagram will now let users send photos privately to one another is a new feature clearly designed to compete with Snapchat.
As part of its new direct messaging feature, Instagram will allow users to delete sent photos from recipients' phones at any time. Though not quite the same as Snapchat's ephemeral, self-imploding photo messages, what this means is that Instagram users will be able to cope with a common online dilemma: sender's remorse.
As ArsTechnica reports, the new feature grants Instagram users more manual control over when and if they delete a photo than rival Snapchat, which has built its brand on the ability to avoid leaving a digital paper trail (whether that's actually the case). The new private messaging system lets users send private photos to up to 15 people from the list of Instagram accounts they followIf at any point the sender decides they don't want a recipient to be able to see the message anymore, they can delete it — regardless of whether the photo has already been viewed. Actor and director Shia LaBeouf fired off a collection of Twitter missives early Tuesday morning, owning up to accusations that his new short film HowardCantour.com plagiarizes Daniel Clowes' 2007 comic Justin M. Damiano. The film was posted online on Monday.
"I f*cked up," LaBeouf wrote at the end of his six-tweet explanation (below).
The allegations surfaced Monday night after Clowes, a veteran graphic novelist, discovered LaBeouf's 11-minute film about fictional film critic Howard Cantour, played by Jim Gaffigan.
Eric Reynolds of Fantagraphics, a publisher of comic books and graphic novels, is among those who noticed the film's dialogue and imagery looked and sounded eerily similar Clowes' comic, which is also about a film critic undergoing struggles. But LaBeouf did not credit Clowes or reference Justin M. Damiano in any manner Read more...

Romney's Presidential Dreams Crash in Emotional 'Mitt' Trailer
Netflix's new trailer for Mitt, a documentary about Mitt Romney's run for president of the United States, begins where the Republican candidate's journey ends: the moment he realizes he lost the election to Barack Obama
The film, directed by Greg Whiteley, premieres Jan. 24. It details the behind-the-scenes actions of Romney's aspirations starting in 2006 and concluding at his concession speech in 2012. Among the moments Whiteley captured was this odd way to iron his clothes:

“I first met and filmed the Romney family in Park City [Utah] in 2006 as they gathered to discuss whether Mitt should run for president," Whiteley said in a statement. "Over the next seven years. I couldn't believe I was filming inside rooms and situations I had no business being in. Now that I've finished I couldn't be more pleased to share this experience with audiences around the world through Netflix." Read more...

An experiment by a handful of high school students in Denmark has sparked some serious international interest in the scientific community.
Five ninth-grade girls at Hjallerup School in North Jutland, Denmark, noticed they had trouble concentrating after sleeping with their mobile phones at their bedsides. They tried to figure out why. The school obviously doesn’t have the equipment to test human brain waves, so the girls decided to do a more rudimentary experiment. Read more...

Justin Tucker, Kicker, Conqueror
It's a morning to unreservedly celebrate Justin Tucker, because how often do we get the chance? How rarely is the kicker the one proudly jogging off the field with his helmet held high? Tucker—who appears to have wrestled the "Legatron" nickname away from Greg Zuerlein—accounted for all of the Ravens' points, including a 61-yarder with 38 seconds remaining to keep Baltimore in the playoff picture.
Prankster Crashes Strangers' Phone Calls to Teach Lesson
It's a central tenet of proper 21st-century etiquette that you shouldn't talk loudly on your cellphone in public. Clearly fed up with impolite rule-breakers, prankster Greg Benson set out to teach a few strangers an unforgettable lesson
In his latest video, the YouTube star behind Mediocre Films pranked airport patrons talking on their cellphones.
Benson pretends to chat on a cellphone next to strangers who are also making calls. But things get a little uncomfortable when his conversations sound awfully similar to the ones happening next to him. Of course, when strangers notice, he denies it vehemently, leading to nothing but awkward tension. Read more...
