This Stunning Apple Video Was Shot Entirely on iPhones

by Todd Wasserman

Apple celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Macintosh computer with a characteristically hush-hush project.

On Jan. 24, the actual date of the anniversary, the brand used iPhones to shoot a short movie showing how people in 10 countries across five continents use Macs. Those uses range from dressmaking to engineering to deejaying

Apple has not run the video as an ad, but instead embedded it on its website on Monday and added it to its YouTube channel (watch above). This tweet from Lee Clow, chairman and global director of TBWA Worldwide, Apple's ad agency, led some to believe the brand might run a Super Bowl ad this year. Read more...

You're Not Going To Be Able To Have Any Fun In The Sochi Bathrooms

Canadian snowboarder Sebastien Toutant is in Sochi for the Olympics and tweeted an image of what appears to be the meddlesome arm of Big Red Brother reaching all the way into the john. No fishing for poop? No self-administering opiates on the bathroom floor because you have a gruesome broken leg? No, thank you.

Prepare To Get Ripped Off At The Super Bowl

Prepare To Get Ripped Off At The Super Bowl

Actually, the Super Bowl may be the one event where these kinds of prices are palatable; it's not like many John Q. Fans are going to this game. Still, even for the aristocrats and hangers on, a $20 souvenir cup of soup is tough to stomach. (You could've at least least called it a Souper Bowl, guys.) Maybe it'd be worth it if that cup regenerates more soup after you've finished it. Maybe.

Dumb People Mad At Multilingual "America The Beautiful" Coca-Cola Ad

Dumb People Mad At Multilingual "America The Beautiful" Coca-Cola Ad

Coca-Cola aired a Super Bowl ad with "America the Beautiful" sung in numerous languages. It was sweet and forgettable—there are many things not to like about Coke, but their harmless pandering to the idea that America is, among other things, a polyglot nation is not among them—except to dumb, intolerant people who were mad about non-English languages being used in combination with America. They were angry, and used the hashtag #fuckcoke so that everyone would know just how angry they were.

9/11 Truther Sneaked Into Super Bowl By Telling Security He Was Late

by Barry Petchesky

The most memorable quote from the Super Bowl was, unexpectedly, "Investigate 9/11. 9/11 was perpetrated by people within our own government." But how in the hell did that guy make it past so many levels of security to interrupt Malcolm Smith's press conference in the first place? Pretty easily, it turns out.

Okay, we couldn’t get over how hilarious it was that something like this actually happened. Following the trend of “pranking” videos that are all the rage on YouTube, an attractive young woman asks her iPhone (Siri) for advice on getting the cute guy sitting next to her to ask her out. In a move only the most diehard of fanboys will ever understand, the dude responds with the most epic of suggestions ever: “You should try Android.” BOOM. Video proof below.

Sgt. Ariel Soltura of the Rosenberg Police Department in Texas spotted 10-year-old Jermaine Ford tossing a football by himself in a parking lot while on patrol Saturday afternoon. Rather than roll by, the police officer pulled over and joined Ford for a quick game of catch.

The dash cam on Sgt. Soltura's patrol car caught the playful moment, and the Rosenberg Police Department posted the footage to its Facebook page. The video has since garnered more than 5,000 shares.

Soltura told Fox 26 Houston that he hopes the viral video will inspire other law enforcement agencies to "police with the community." Read more...

Cue up the blooper reel — this one makes the cut

Meteorologist Jim Cantore was reporting the weather live from South Carolina's College of Charleston when he spotted a rowdy college kid heading his way. The student runs into frame — with a fierce battle cry — and Cantore, without missing a beat, knees the videobomber squarely in the groin

Ouch

Cantore quickly comments on the incident before going back to the report on Winter Storm Leon. Clearly meteorologists don't mess around. Have you seen Al Roker's roundhouse kick? Read more...

Rob Ford got tickled. By Chief Budget Officer Councillor Frank Di Giorgio. During a budget meeting at City Hall

So, that happened

Is this some Canadian political tradition? Is the chief budget officer tasked with keeping a smile on the mayor's face when times get hard or the budget looks meek? No one knows what type of rules govern the Great White North

But it's good to see that the political strife surrounding the mayor of Toronto hasn't gotten him too down. He still enjoys a hearty laugh from time to time

North Korea Claims to Have Landed On the Sun, Hilarity Ensues

Satisfied with his performance, he reportedly immediately declared his retirement from the sport. Audi Engineered the Creepiest Dog of All Time

by Neha Prakash

Audi may be known for engineering impressive vehicles, and now, the company is also engineering nightmares.

The company's Super Bowl XLVIII ad dropped on Tuesday, and it shows what happens when we compromise: The world gets run over by a terrifying monster breed of dogs.

The humorous 60-second spot begins with a couple making the tough choice between a Doberman and Chihuahua. Their indecision results a new type of dog: the not-so friendly Doberhuahua. Even animal-loving Sarah McLachlan, who makes a cameo in the ad, doesn't want to save this pooch (which says a lot). Read more...

Ellen gave everyone in her audience an LG G Flex for her birthday [VIDEO]

by Chris Chavez

Birthdays are fun. And where most people see it as an opportunity to receive cool gifts, sometimes it can be just as much fun to give out stuff on your birthday as well. This is exactly what Ellen did while shooting her special birthday episode where she showed off her upcoming Super Bowl ad for the new Beats Music app. Seems someone at AT&T was feeling especially generous, as Ellen later revealed that everyone in her audience would be going home with the all new LG G Flex. Man, we missed out. Watch the freakout in the video above.

Samsung announces Galaxy S4 ‘Black Edition’ with faux-leather finish

by Kevin Krause

Samsung-Galaxy-S4-Black-Edition

Samsung has introduced a handful of international releases this week to round out their Galaxy lineup. Taking center stage is the Samsung Galaxy S 4 Black Edition. The Black Edition gives the S4 perhaps its biggest external design tweak since its launch with a faux leather back, which riffs on the design introduced with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and newer Samsung tablets.

The look is complete with leather grain and mock stitching, giving the S4 a nice premium look. We haven’t been the biggest fans in the world of the design choice by Samsung, but it’s nice to see the company experimenting with finish options. Hopefully someday that includes metal, but I digress. The Galaxy S4 Black Edition is otherwise identical to the original, featuring a 5-inch HD display, Snapdragon 600 CPU, 2GB RAM, and 13MP camera.

Along with the standard S4 Black Edition, Samsung also introduced the Galaxy S4 Mini Black Edition. Both devices will be available starting next month in Russia and possibly elsewhere.

samsung-Core-LeFleur

In other Samsung release news, the company introduced several new La Fleur editions. These include new versions of the Galaxy Fame Lite, Galaxy Trend, and Galaxy Core.  In Poland the company unveiled the Galaxy Note 3 Neo, a device that offers S Pen input and phablet dimensions with specs that go a bit easier on the wallet. Two versions of that device — 3G and LTE — will be available.  Both include a 5.5-inch 720p display, 2GB RAM, and an 8MP camera. The 3G version sports quad-core processing while the LTE edition gets hexa-core silicon. The Note 3 Neo will se a global launch next month.

The gorgeous 'Prospect' trailer is a sci-fi trip into the deep jungle

by Aaron Souppouris

Prospect is a 15-minute sci-fi short set on a "toxic" planet that utilizes custom props and costumes instead of CGI. It tells the story of a teenage girl who, while scouring the planet for a valuable resin, loses her father to a bandit attack and is forced to "grow up quick." Apparently inspired by classic sci-fi like Blade Runner and Star Wars, the Kickstarter-funded short was shot in Washington's Hoh rainforest. The full short is due to come out soon, but its creators have released a short trailer. It's high on indie sheen, retro costumes, and at the very least leaves us wanting to see more.

Amazon considering $20 to $40 price hike for Prime service in US

by Josh Lowensohn

Amazon today said it's "considering" raising the price of its $79 per year Prime service to customers in the US by another $20 to $40. The possible increase — which has not been finalized — was announced during the company's fourth quarter earnings call with analysts, and due to higher costs of shipping goods, Amazon CFO Tom Szkutak said.

Watch the evolution of Hollywood's best special effects

by Sean Hollister

Since 1977, the Academy Awards have handed out an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. So it would stand to reason that by combining them, you'd have a chronology of the best special effects ever made. That's what filmmaker Nelson Carvajal has done in the video below, providing a fascinating look at how the craft has made our dreams and nightmares appear possible over the years. Watch the lightsabers of Star Wars give way to dinosaurs of Jurassic Park and the paint-filled heaven of What Dreams May Come, and see just how much the rise of digital has changed the medium with Avatar, Hugo and The Life of Pi. It all takes less than five minutes.

Rumor: Lenovo to make “one of the last” Nexus products

by Quentyn Kennemer

Google Lenovo shake

Some more bizarre news might be coming out of this whole Lenovo/Motorola acquisition story going on. According to leakster Eldar Murtazin, Lenovo will be responsible for making one of the final Nexus devices (whether that’ll be a phone or a tablet). It’s an interesting revelation, if true. Lenovo has had little success outside of their home market of China, so one has to wonder if they’ll be using Motorola’s prowess to help them achieve a device worthy of donning the Nexus name.

Also lending credence to Motorola being the likely source for this supposed Lenovo Nexus is belief by Murtazin that the product will heavily focus on North American markets. That certainly wouldn’t bode well for Lenovo if we’re judging their history in the region, so it’s likely they’ll be putting Motorola to task for this supposed device.

Of concern is that Murtazin is continuing to beat the “Nexus is dying” drum. That particular rumor came out by the same guy earlier this week, with Murtazin suggesting Google will retire the brand to make way for Google Play Edition products. It’d be a sad day to see that happen, but we apparently wouldn’t see the earliest of this move until 2015.

Colin Kaepernick On Richard Sherman: “Come On”

Colin Kaepernick was in a private room on the sixth floor of a West Side event space, standing in front of a white scrim festooned with corporate logos and posing for photos with a succession of lesser VIPs. He was there as the "surprise guest" of Deadspin's Super Bowl party last night, which is another way of saying he was a paid spokesmodel for the party's sponsor, and he was playing the role to the hilt—fingerless gloves, black trenchcoat, shades with gradient lenses. You can pull off that kind of look when you happen to be Colin Kaepernick. Well, him or Knight Rider.

[New Game] Marvel Run Jump Smash Is The Best Superhero Bobblehead Game You'll See Today

by Michael Crider

unnamedMarvel continues its onslaught of games in the Play Store, and this time they've decided to take the well-trodden road marked "endless runner." Marvel Run Jump Smash is pretty typical of the genre, and at first it looks like a carbon copy of Jetpack Joyride. But there's a surprising amount of depth beneath that cutesy exterior, and the 2D art might be enough for the one dollar entry fee alone.

You start off as a basic SHIELD agent, either Nick Fury or Maria Hill, running and jumping through a fairly typical sprite environment.

Google Play Books update restores PDF upload functionality

by Quentyn Kennemer

google play books

We were excited when a recent upgrade to Google Play Books finally added the ability to upload PDF or ePub books from our Android devices. We’d already had the ability to do that from the web, but sometimes you have to get those digital pages uploaded on the go. Unfortunately, Google removed that feature from the app shortly afterward, citing that it was only in experimental changes and that the feature wasn’t supposed to be go out in that build.

Thankfully it seems the feature has graduated from “experimental” status as it has been restored in the latest upgrade present in the Google Play Store. To access it, you’ll need to enable PDF support in the settings menu. From there, touching a PDF file in downloads or email will ask if you want to upload the file to your account.

Other changes to the app include the migration of Settings and Help to the main menu, as well as bug fixes and performance enhancements (including a fix that will now prevent the screen from sleeping when a book is being read aloud). As always, find it for free in the Google Play Store.

Twitter for Android update brings basic photo editing tools

by Quentyn Kennemer

twitter for android update

If you haven’t abandoned Twitter’s official Android app yet (it’s actually gotten quite good over the past few months), you’ll be glad to know there’s an upgrade waiting for you in the Google Play Store. This latest version adds some very basic image editing tools. You’ll be able to specify a crop at either square or wide aspect ratios, as well as rotate the image as you see fit. It’s no Snapseed, but if you only want to make a couple of quick framing adjustments before posting then this should work out quite well.

Twitter has also made it so that you’ll always see something new when you pull the timeline down to refresh, even if that “something new” isn’t coming from any of your followers. They’ll pull in trends, recommended Tweets and more at the top so you can explore other topics of interest and people on Twitter while you wait for your lazy friends to submit their next 140 characters.

It’s not the biggest upgrade in the world, but you’ll want to get your hands on it as soon as possible. Here’s the Google Play download link, so head over there and give it a shot at your earliest convenience.
