7 Bizarre and Mind-Boggling Photos That Can't Be Explained
The Solway Firth Spaceman refers to the first image above and shows a figure seen in a photograph taken in 1964 in Burgh Marsh, situated near Burgh by Sands, overlooking the Solway Firth in Cumbria, England, by firefighter, photographer and local historian Jim Templeton. He claims the photograph shows a background figure wearing a space suit and has insisted that he did not see anyone present when the photograph was taken. Non-Russians Named Victor Are Russia's Olympic Secret Weapon
Snowboarder Victor Wild was born in White Salmon, Wash., and lived in the United States until 2011. Speed skater Victor Ahn was born in South Korea, and lived there until 2011
The two athletes — neither of whom had Russian citizenship four years ago during the last Winter Olympics in Vancouver— have combined to win five of Russia's 10 total gold medals this month in Sochi
Confused? Wild and Ahn's Olympic success — and fluid citizenship — shows the unusual lengths to which Russia has gone to ensure that its turn hosting the games is as resounding a success as possible. Wild and Ahn's medal hauls also show the unusual lengths taken by Olympic athletes to achieve success in lesser-known sports that exist far from public scrutiny
Wild has won two gold medals for Russia this week in Sochi – the first Olympics medals of his career — both in slalom snowboarding. Ahn (whose first and last names are sometimes spelled "Viktor" and "An," respectively) has won three gold medals for Russia in short-track speed skating this week. Read more...
Hell Freezes Over: Nokia Unveils an Android Phone, the Nokia X
Nokia just did the unthinkable: The company, such a reliable Windows Phone partner that Microsoft is acquiring most of it, has unveiled an Android phone, the Nokia X. But if you look closely, you can see why.
The Nokia X, launching today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, isn't just your run-of-the-mill Android handset. The device, the first of several Android products from Nokia, is a budget model (just 89 euros or about $120) that runs a highly modified version of Android.

Similar to what Amazon has done with its Kindle Fire tablets, Nokia has taken out all the "Googleness" from Android and replaced it with its own services as well as Microsoft's. It's even designed the icons to look like what you might find on one of Nokia's Lumia phones. Read more...

Stand back, because these GIFs really pop. Using a simple optical illusion, some clever artists have made your everyday GIFs look 3D — except better, because you don't need goofy eyewear to enjoy them.
Here's how it works: By placing vertical white lines on the image, it establishes a marker for the foreground of the image. Basically, you are tricking your brain into thinking that the lines are closer to you than the image itself, so when an object crosses in front of the line your brain perceives it to be coming closer to you
Nothing about the image has changed, your brain is just seeing it differently. This effect can be used on any GIF, but the results may vary. Read more...

Huawei MediaPad X1 7-inch phone hands-on
An impressive display of hardware quality in a gigantic phone form factor
Huawei is making a big deal about its latest huge phone, the MediaPad X1, here at MWC 2014. Yes, this 7-inch device is technically a phone, but Huawei is marketing it more as an intersecting point of phones and tablets. We've seen Sony do it with the Z Ultra and Samsung with the Galaxy Mega, and now it's Huawei's turn.
This is basically just a gigantic phone, with little to make it easy to use one-handed. Huawei does its best by offering small bezels — less than 3mm on the left and right sides — and extreme thinness of 7.18mm. It accomplishes this thickness with an impressive build quality of an all-glass front and aluminum back and sides that uses an interesting nanotechnology to keep it rigid.
On the inside, Huawei is going with a relatively unknown Kirin 910 1.6 GHz quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM — in our time with the device the UI seems snappy and fluid with not a single slowdown. The display comes in at an impressive 1200 x 1920 and looks absolutely great to our eyes with solid viewing angles and colors. Huawei is still doing some weird things with its interface that keep icons and settings overly-colorful to our eyes, but if you know its interface than you'll feel at home here.
Stick around for a closer look at the phone, including video, after the break.

Report: Google Smartwatch to launch at IO 2014 in June, made by LG
According to a knower of things, @evleaks, Google’s long rumored entry into the budding smartwatch market will come at this year’s Google IO in June and will be manufactured by LG.
We haven’t heard much from Google regarding a smartwatch, often leaving tech bloggers and enthusiasts to piece the puzzle together over the past year. We know that last year Google purchased WIMM, a smartwatch manufacturer, and quietly added the wearable company into the Android fold. We also know that Google has been awarded a patent or two for smartwatches in the past, slowly adding to the intellectual property needed for successful entry into this market.
As for LG as the manufacturer of choice, LG and Google have a good history together, producing televisions with Google TV, the Nexus 4, and the recent Nexus 5. In fact, it was reported a year ago that LG was getting into the Android smartwatch craze, so this little gem should be right up LG’s alley.

NBC Edited Out 38% Of The Closing Ceremony. Here's What You Missed.
It's no secret NBC makes significant edits to its tape-delayed broadcasts of Olympic ceremonies. We've never seen them leave out as much as they did last night, though, in excising more than 50 minutes from an already brisk Sochi closing ceremony; that left U.S. viewers seeing less than 62% of the event. We tracked down everything NBC wouldn't show you—including, once again, the parts of IOC president Thomas Bach's address they excised.

Android 4.4 Update Is Rolling Out To Sprint's Samsung Galaxy Note 3 was written by the awesome team at Android Police.
Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3 KitKat update begins rolling out
It was only yesterday we’d seen Samsung’s source code for the Galaxy Note 3 KitKat update trickle into the atmosphere, and we imagined it wouldn’t take long before the actual over-the-air rollout process begin. Thankfully Samsung didn’t disappoint, as many Sprint users over at AndroidForums.com are reporting that they are beginning to see the upgrade.
The upgrade looks to clock in at around 503 megabytes, which definitely isn’t light work for your 3G or 4G connection. You’ll want to get going on a WiFi network before attempting to pull this one down, and as general rule of caution you should only attempt it if you have at least 50% on your battery life.
As we’ve seen with KitKat upgrades for other top Samsung devices, this version doesn’t change a whole lot (Android 4.3 Jelly Bean took care of the most big changes), though Sprint does note a few things in their notes:
- OS upgrade to 4.4.2
- Music album art will be displayed on the lock screen while playing music
- New launcher settings menu added for easily switching home screens and SMS apps
- Camera shortcut added to the lock screen
- Improved user interface and stability
We’re still looking to track down more information from Sprint, including the version number you should be looking out for. In the meantime, you’re free to ping their servers and see if they’ll let you download this upgrade. Just head to Settings > About Phone to take care of all that. Let us know if you’re seeing it in the comments below!

Facebook is buying WhatsApp for around $16 billion
Tipping the scales at nearly 1 billion users strong, WhatsApp is one of the world’s most widely used messaging apps. Apparently that also means it’s worth an exorbitant sum of money to someone like Facebook who has just agreed to buy WhatsApp for the whopping sum of $16 billion ($4 billion cash and around $12 billion in Facebook shares). That’s a little more than the $3 billion in cash they reportedly offered to buy Snapchat.
As was the case with Instagram, Facebook promises the 2 companies will continue to operate separately, with WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum finding himself in a new position on Facebook’s board of directors. This move helps the social networking giant extend its reach beyond that of a simple social network, with Facebook hoping to “accelerate growth and user engagement across both companies.”
It’s too early to say what changes will be made if any, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed “sponsored text messages” will be left out of the equation.
Tip: Spotify Connect Lets You Stream Music To Your Other Android Devices, Not Just Internet-Enabled Speakers
It turns out Spotify Connect has a very useful feature that the company hasn't done much to make immediately obvious. The service, which lets you stream music to WiFi-connected speakers from your smartphone or tablet, also lets you pump music to other Android devices. The devices don't even have to be on the same network, for that matter. You can connect from an LTE network, as you can see in the screenshots below.

Clear your desk space: 10-inch “MEGA” Android figurines are on the way
We’ve always had our fair share of fun with these little miniature Android figurines by Andrew Bell via Dead Zebra, but it looks like the big boys are ready to come out and play. Andrew Bell has announced the new MEGA sized figurines, which are 10-inch versions of the little Android mascot we know and love. It might not be life-sized, but these things stand quite tall up against the originals. You can see a comparison in some of the images above and below.
And their physical stature isn’t the only thing getting bigger, either. These seem to cost a pretty penny at retail, with some stores beginning to list the plain figurines for a whopping $70. We can only imagine how much special limited edition designs will end up costing once Andrew Bell puts his creative genius to work.
Vinyl Riot is the first retailer we can find that has these for sale, though they won’t be shipping until the week of February 26th. They also have do-it-yourself versions available for $65, giving you a blank, white slate to make your figurine look however you want.
Andrew Bell expects them to be up on Dead Zebra soon as well, so keep an eye out there in the weeks to come. In the meantime, you’ll want to bookmark this Google+ page as Bell is looking to direct all discussion (whether it’s about deals, availability or whatever comes to mind) in that particular comment thread. Let us know if you’re going to be looking for these once they’re up for sale.

Leaked Details Point To Fingerprint Sensor In Galaxy S5 Used For Unlocking, Custom Shortcuts, Hiding Private Data, And More
A new report from SamMobile claims to confirm that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5 will indeed have a fingerprint sensor. Not only that, the leaked information has a lot to say about how the feature will work. According to SamMobile, the sensor is going to be integrated with the home button, and yes, that means there will still be physical buttons on the Galaxy S5.
Unlike Apple's Touch ID scanner, Samsung's version will require you to swipe your finger across the home button while keeping it flat.
