Fascinating Look at the Rotating Space Colony (Stanford torus) by NASA

If you've seen the movie Elysium, then this rotating space colony concept probably is still fresh in your mind, but did you know that this concept was first brought up in the 1970s, by NASA? The Stanford torus is a proposed design for a space habitat capable of housing 10,000 to 140,000 permanent residents. The Stanford torus was proposed during the 1975 NASA Summer Study, conducted at Stanford University, with the purpose of speculating on designs for future space colonies. by Ryan Whitwam

2420202cv1aThe Galaxy Gear hasn't been a smash hit, but it's still one of the most full-features smart watches available. It's definitely too expensive at $300, but half that price is pretty good. Best Buy currently has several colors of the Gear on sale for 50% off – just $149.99.

This will probably add fuel to the fire of speculation over a new version of the Gear debuting at MWC, but if that doesn't worry you, this is a solid deal.

Taco Bell’s new app for easy ordering launches later this year, better stock up on toilet paper

by Chris Chavez

slider_tacos_fiery_2013

I’ll be the first to admit, I love me some Taco Bell. The subject of my late night cravings, you can usually find me at my local Taco Bell between the hours of 11pm-2am on any given weekend. With so many items on the menu, I’ve often found it difficult to quickly browse for something new, especially when a big line of cars is building up behind me. Who would have guess that Taco Bell knows this feeling well. They even have a name for it: “menu board anxiety.”

To help combat this common condition, Taco Bell has begun testing a new mobile app that allows customers to place orders using their smartphones with little fuss. The app will not only allow customers to pick from any item on the menu, but customize said orders to their liking. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to repeat an order, because of an issue with the intercom, or perhaps my unusually soft voice.

Taco Bell Mobile App Test - Screenshot

I know what you’re thinking — what if you take too long to arrive and the food is already cold? Nobody likes cold beef in their taco. To ensure your food is the freshest (and hottest) it can be, your local Taco Bell wont even begin preparing your order until they know you’re close by. How would they know that? Well, the app uses the built in the GPS on your smartphone to ping the restaurant when you’re pulling up. Genius, right?

Orders can be placed using giftcards or with credit cards, and for creatures of habit, the app even allows customers to save their favorite items/combos for easy ordering. Currently there are 5 locations in Orange County (Southern California) that have begun testing this new service which began nearly 2 years ago. Nationwide expansion is planned for later on in the year. Yo quiero Taco Bell.

Google Play Services 4.2 hits Android devices worldwide, greater influx of Chromecast supported apps to follow

by Chris Chavez

Google Play Services 4.2

Good news for everyone looking to increase the functionality of their Chromecasts, Google Play Services 4.2 has now officially rolled out to Android devices world wide. Aside from updated Google Drive APIs, the update also includes the new Chromecast APIs necessary to cast content to your TV.

It was on February 3rd that the Google Cast SDK went live for developers, allowing them to begin building apps with Chromecast support. Unfortunately, because Google Play Services 4.2 had not officially rolled out to everyone, Google asked developers to hold off on releasing new and improved Chromecastified apps.

Now, with all the pieces in place — the Chromecast SDK in developers hands and Google Play Services 4.2 in everyone else’s — you should expect a slew of new apps updating in the Play Store with Chromecast support. Let the games begin.

I Just Saw the Original RoboCop for the First Time and It's AMAZING

In advance of the big RoboCop reboot opening this week (starring Joel "You're My Ride, Linden" Kinnaman!), I thought it an opportune moment to take a look back at 1987's original robot-who-is-also-a-cop masterpiece that forever cemented the idea of a robot being a cop in the public consciousness. Like, it's not normal that you can just use "a RoboCop" as a noun and every nearby person will be like, "Oh, yes, that is a type of fictional cop with which I am familiar." Really, grandma!?!?!

The Shanghai Tower, although still under construction, is the second largest building in the world. Standing at approximately 2,073 ft. the tower dominates the Shanghai skyline, making surrounding skyscrapers look cute in comparison

Wielding GoPro cameras and apparently, no fear, Vitaliy Raskalov and Vadim Makhorov climbed through the clouds (smog), without any safety gear, to the very top of the tower, and released this anxiety-inducing first-person view of their ascent

But this wasn't enough for the team of daredevils. The duo then scaled one of the construction cranes perched atop of the tower, which is about 2,132 ft. tall, where they achieved one of the most epic high fives known to humankind Read more...

Chick-fil-A Vows to Serve Chicken Raised Without Antibiotics

by Businessweek

Feed-twFeed-fb

Chick-fil-A's famous chicken sandwiches will still be breaded and fried, but soon they won't come with antibiotics.

On Tuesday, Chick-fil-A, the privately held food chain based in Atlanta, announced that it intends to serve chicken "raised without antibiotics" at all its restaurants within five years. It sounds like a clear-cut promise. The history of such vows, though, isn't so simple.

In 2007, Tyson Foods created a campaign to sell chicken that was "raised without antibiotics." Then it turned out Tyson was injecting the chicken eggs with a vaccine that included antibiotics.

Other fast-food chains have announced policies to curb antibiotic use in livestock, most notably McDonald's in 2003, but those polices have included loopholes that allowed livestock producers to continue giving antibiotics to healthy animals. Read more...

Just after Apple confirmed the iPhone 5S' successful debut, rumors of the latest version of the device have begun to surface — this time with images

In a blog post published Wednesday, blogger Sonny Dickson posted what he claims are images of the iPhone 6. Dickson wrote, "We’ve gotten our hands on some great photos of the iPhone’s rear casing in Space Grey."

The casing (picture below) has all the signature iPhone design elements, such as a camera and flash port, as well as the familiar Apple logo. But that's where the iPhone similarities end, as the larger size and rounded-edge frame shown in the photos are far more reminiscent of the iPad than any previous version of Apple's smartphone Read more...

New Yorkers and tourists have a new way of navigating the city below the streets

Eighteen maps have been installed at New York City's Grand Central Station in 47-inch touchscreen kiosks. They will display departures, arrivals, delays and outages, as well points of interest

The MTA awarded the contract to install these interactive maps to technology and design firm Control Group, with the key goal of helping riders better learn the subway system. Control Group began by studying subway riders and their use of maps for one month. From these observations, it created three categories: seasoned riders, commuters going somewhere other than their normal route, and visitors. The benefits of the touchscreen maps have yet to be seen Read more...

Facebook's Look Back videos show us everything from our years on Facebook — both the good and, in Darth Vader's case, the evil.

Comedian Joshua Dill has imagined what Vader's Look Back video would look had he used the social network instead of the Force. The video employs some of Vader's choicest quotes from the classic trilogy as status updates, while his iconic scenes from all six movies are reimagined as uploaded photos. His look back also includes the progression of young Anakin Skywalker to the Sith Lord we all know and love to hate.

But, for a company making a big show of live streaming every Olympic event, NBC sure makes it harder than you'd think to actually find that live content on its site. Here's a quick rundown of the problem — which, we imagine, you're already familiar with — and a simple shortcut to making your Olympic streaming hassle-free and fun for the whole family

Leaked Galaxy S5 schematics might give us our first peek at the device [RUMOR]

by Chris Chavez

When Samsung finally unveils the Samsung Galaxy S5 during their Feb 24th Unpacked 5 event, let’s be honest — we don’t expect the design to look too different from previous offerings. With the Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Tab Pros, and newly revised Galaxy S4, Samsung has invested a lot of time and energy (money) in creating their new Galaxy brand. It’s because of this, we anticipate the manufacturer will largely use the same design language for the next flagship.

And while we’ve been hearing a lot about the high-end specs Samsung will cram into the S5 (even seen a few benchmarks measuring its performance), what we haven’t gotten was an actual look at the device. Leave it to Sonny Dickson, a blogger who’s built a reputation on his accurate iPhone component leaks, to come across what looks like design schematics for the upcoming S5. Keep in mind that not even Dickson is sure of this “leaks” legitimacy, but it’s likely these images were provided by a case maker.

Galaxy S5 schematics

Judging by the measurements alone (141.7 x 72.5 x 8.2mm), the phone lines up with what we were expecting from a larger 5.25-inch display. By comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S4 sits at 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm, and the Galaxy S3 was 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm. This means it could be taller than Galaxy S4, but thinner than the S3 (while still packing an unconfirmed 3,000mAh battery). Sounds exciting.

You’ll also notice what appears to be a dual-LED flash. Given the big deal Apple made about their white/amber LED flash combo, it only makes sense that, like HTC, Samsung would want in on this feature as well. Home button looks like it could be returning (did you expect any different). Looking at the bottom, you’ll notice a larger than normal hole on the bottom (bigger than your typical micro USB port). This could indicate Samsung will opt for USB 3.0 in the S5, similar to the Galaxy Note 3.

Again, we can’t stress enough to only take this leak with a grain of salt. With the Samsung Galaxy S5 unveiling event less than 2 weeks away, we wont have to wait long before we finally find out what Samsung has up their sleeve.

Flappy Bird dev says the game’s addictive qualities motivated its removal, but is that the whole story?

by Chris Chavez

Flappy Bird Developer Dong Nguyen

It was over the weekend that we told you guys about Flappy Bird creator Dong Nguyen’s sudden decision to remove his smash hit game from all app stores. In fact, there were those that didn’t think he’d do it, calling the threat of removal a low-cost marketing stunt from a developer with an insatiable lust for additional downloads.

Instead there seemed to be a cloud looming over the game developer’s head, tweeting messages like, “I cannot take this anymore.” Can’t do what exactly? You’d think the $50,000 a day Nguyen was making purely from Flappy Birds in-app ad revenue, his biggest stresses would be whether he wanted silver, or 4k gold plated rims on his new Mercedes.

This lead many to wonder if the game’s heavy use of  Super Mario inspired visuals sparked a C&D from Nintendo, but Nguyen addressed this in followup tweets mentioning that legal threats had nothing to do with the take down. So what gives? What could have possibly lead to the greatest indie success story since Angry Birds to suddenly crash and burn? According to Nguyen: addiction.

Flappy Birds Anonymous

In a rare interview with Forbes, Nguyen attributes Flappy Bird’s sheer addictive qualities as motivation for the take down. He created a monster, and it was up to him to right his wrongs. While this may sound downright bizarre to many of us in the western world, video game addiction is taken very serious in Asian countries. It’s so serious that government officials in South Korea have begun regulating video game use, blocking gamers younger than 18 years old from playing between midnight and 8am.

When it comes to Nguyen’s other titles still available for download, he mentions that if he felt people were becoming addicted, he’d remove those as well. Such empathy.

Pressure from the outside?

But aside from weighing heavy on Nguyen’s conscience, it is possible other factors may involved? Remember, Ngyuen’s DotGears game studio is located in Vietnam, where communists still run the government, despite having a capitalist-style economy. Now, we don’t want to accuse anyone of fowl play, but when Nguyen is tweeting messages that he can’t sleep, the game has ruined his “simple life,” and “my life has not been as comfortable as I was before,” — it begins to sound like outside sources may have been involved.

It’s worth noting that right before the Forbes interview took place — where cameras and picture taking were strictly prohibited — Nguyen, was paid a visit by Vietnam’s deputy prime minister Vu Duc Dam, delaying the interview by several hours. Forbes notes that Nguyen appeared “stressed” during their interview. Once again, another odd piece in the puzzle that has been Flappy Bird.

RIP Flappy Bird

It’s possible we’ll likely never know the true story behind the meteoric rise (and subsequent) fall of Flappy Bird, but we’ll always remember the pain, love, and joy it brought to our Androids. The time for mourning is over — I think it’s time we finally move on.

RFID Tags Track Marijuana From Seed to Sale, in Colorado

by Rebecca Hiscott

Feed-twFeed-fb

On New Years Day, Colorado became the first state to legalize the sale of recreational marijuana. The new legislation has provoked a Denver-bound flood of "Ganjapreneurs" and kickstarted what is sure to be a very profitable pot tourism trade

Yet the business is far less hippie and far more button-down than it appears

The Colorado state government enforces the sale of marijuana with a set of regulations (500 pages in all) designed to shut out the black market. For one, it stipulates digital tracking of marijuana plants from seed to sale, using radio frequency identification (RFID) technology

The cannabis industry is generally eager to comply with even the most stringent government regulations, thereby proving the marijuana market can be both lucrative and legitimate. However, implementation problems have slowed the retail pot business's anticipated boom Read more...

Flappy Bird taken down to save us from ourselves, apparently

by Richard Devine

Game designed to be played while relaxed became anything but says developer

The world's brief love affair with Flappy Bird may now be coming to an end thanks to its removal from Google Play and the iOS App Store, but the developer has now come clean about his reasons for doing so. Despite an apparent issue with intense media attention, developer Dong Nguyen has spoken to the folks at Forbes about just why the bird flaps no more.

Nguyen, it seems, was saving humanity from itself. He says he designed Flappy Bird to be played for a few minutes a time while relaxing. Of course, what we actually got was rage quits, swearing, and all manner of unhappiness with how damn hard it was. And yet everyone kept going back for more. It's this addictive nature which Nguyen claims was the final straw, and was the ultimate reason that the bird has flown away for ever. Not any issues with Nintendo.

Of course, if you really, really need that kind of game to play, there's a ton of clones and rip-offs already flooding the market to give you your fix. Or we could all just play something better, whatever.
