21 Examples Showing Why Mug Shots in the 1920s Were Much Classier

By 1857, the New York City police department had a gallery where daguerreotypes of criminals were displayed. The Pinkerton National Detective Agency began using these on wanted posters in the United States. By the 1870s the agency had amassed the largest collection of mug shots in the U.S. In 1888, Alphonse Bertillon invented the modern mug shot featuring full face and profile views, standardizing the lighting and angles. This system was soon adopted throughout Europe, and in the United States and Russia. These examples from the 1920s may even appear as photos from a party or gathering to some, but they're actually real police mug shots. Continue reading for more.

Marijuana Vending Machine Rolls Out in Colorado

by Todd Wasserman

People in Colorado may soon have an ultra-convenient option to buy their pot: a vending machine that dispenses medical marijuana and THC-laden snacks

The machine, called the ZaZZZ, was unveiled at an event in Avon, Colo., over the weekend. Its creators told NPR that the machine uses biometrics to verify a customer's age. It's also climate-controlled to keep the products fresh.

The ZaZZZ will be available in licensed marijuana-dispensing stores in Colorado and is the first designed for use by medical marijuana patients, not retailers.

Seat belts everyone! Time for an educational field trip on The Magic School Bus back to the 1990s.

The clunky technology of the '90s paved the way for innovations in today's classrooms, and growing up in that time period was an adventure.

Children today would scratch their heads at a floppy disk. And who would know what to do with Microsoft Encarta when a quick Google search is so much easier?

New gadgets, trends and advancing technology have provided the education system with fancier tools, but we look back fondly at the learning resources of our past. Read more...

Anyone and everyone in the US can now buy a Google Glass unit today only

by Quentyn Kennemer

google glass explorer

In case you haven’t heard our bazillion reminders up until this point, here’s another: you can now buy the Google Glass, if you want.

The Explorers program is open to anyone willing to drop $1,500 for what’s essentially a long beta test for an emerging product. Of course, you have to live in the US to get in on it (otherwise you’ll want an overseas buddy to help you out if you’ve got the dough), and you’ll also have to do it by the end of the day.

That $1,500 will go toward the initial unit you get and likely any revisions that Google may or may not issue ahead of the device’s consumer release (the date of which we’re still not sure of).

You’ll also be able to choose between one frame or shade attachment, the former of which will be necessary for those who wear glasses and want to get their glass outfitted with prescription lenses. The base Glass unit itself is available in black, white, red, blue or gray.

Hear all you need to know? Get over there to order now, and hurry up because today is the only day you’re guaranteed entry into the Explorers program. Otherwise, you may have to wait for more invites to head out, and there’s no telling when or if that’ll ever happen.

Google bought a company that makes solar drones, and we’re officially freaked out

by Quentyn Kennemer

titan drone

It isn’t unheard of for some of Google’s acquisitions to come with a bit of unease, but their latest one probably takes the biggest piece of cake of them all. The Mountain View company has confirmed the purchase of New Mexico-based Titan Aerospace, a company that specializes in creating high-altitude drone technology for use in… whatever.

The company is said to begin interfacing with the team working on Project Loon, which is a vision that Google hopes can bring balloon-carried high-speed WiFi transmitters and deliver widespread connectivity for the masses. The Wall Street Journal also reports that Google could work with Makani, an internal team tasked with researching and developing airborne wind-powered turbines for more efficient energy.

All of this sounds quite fine — in fact, it’s all kind of cool — but there’s one other harrowing thing Google could be looking to do with their new-found knowledge of drone technology. It’s said that the drones could likely be put to use for purposes of gathering and collecting data, likely to help improve Google’s mapping business.

Google already employs the likes of self-driving cars and camera-equipped airplanes to take snapshots of the world for use in Google Maps, but Titan’s drones could bring a flexible, modular system that does all of that and more. That “more” could including anything from atmospheric sensors for recording climate data to delivering aforementioned airborne WiFi to countries that aren’t well-equipped for hard-line access.

The drones themselves aren’t your Amazon Drone Delivery or consumer-focused Parrot AR Drone-sized pieces of equipment, either — the smallest drone Titan makes is slightly larger than a Boeing 767, which is a passenger cruiser that can seat anywhere between 181 and 375 people. Let that sink into your brain for just a second.

Of course, Google’s intentions probably aren’t as scary as our brains will make them out to be, so we’ll just have to wait and see what the culmination of all these different pieces (Google has made a strong push to acquire robotics and AI companies recently) ends up being.

Dreamy new Sigur Rós single premieres on 'Game of Thrones'

by Rich McCormick

Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós has released a haunting version of Game of Thrones' "The Rains of Castamere." The band isn't the first guitar group to cover songs from George R. R. Martin's fantasy lands of Westeros and Essos, but where indie rock outfit The Hold Steady was chosen to produce a deliberately jarring aural effect, Sigur Rós' plaintive and ethereal take on "The Rains of Castamere" slots easily into Martin's medieval-esque world. The song, about the destruction of a smaller house that dared to test the might of the Lannisters, was featured in the powerful new episode of the HBO show, which aired last night in the US.

SeaWorld acted irresponsibly as an employer by exposing trainers to "recognized hazards" when they worked with killer whales, a U.S. appeals court in Washington, D.C. confirmed Friday

The ruling, in a case which goes back to the death of a trainer at SeaWorld's Orlando theme park in 2010, could mean the company will have to increase the separation between trainers and whales during its highly successful live shows Reuters reports.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit's ruling upholds a previous finding by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA fined SeaWorld $75,000 in August 2010 following the death of trainer Dawn Brancheau in February of that same year Read more...

Google planning to let anyone in the US purchase Google Glass for a limited time [Updated]

by Derek Ross

Google Glass XE11 setup

According to an internal document obtained by The Verge, Google will soon be expanding their current Glass Explorer program in quite a big way. For a limited time, any US resident with $1,500 to spare will be able to purchase Google’s wearable computer. This one day only promotion could start as soon as April 15th according to the document below. To sweeten the deal, Google plans to offer either free frames or free shades to new Glass Explorers.

Glass_Slide_full

This is quite the promotion compared to Google’s previous methods to expand the Glass Explorer program. Previously, you had to either register at Google IO 2012, be 1 of 8,000 #IfIHadGlass contest winners, get an invite from a current Explorer, be a Google Play All Access subscriber, be lucky enough to get one from the Glass sign-up page, or win Phandroid’s Great American Glass contest.

It’s worth mentioning that this new promotion isn’t to be confused with a public, consumer launch. Google is just opening the Glass Explorer program up to a larger audience. With the impending KitKat release for Glass, we’re sure Google is trying to get Glass in the hands of as many users as possible to help iron out some final bugs before a future public launch. That said, we still don’t know when the public launch will be and we don’t have any information on the consumer price either.

If you have the cash on hand, will you be purchasing Google Glass and joining the Glass Explorer program? Let us know in the comments.

Update: And, now it’s official.

Next Tuesday, April 15th at 6am PDT, we’re opening up some spots in the Glass Explorer Program. Any adult in the US* can become an Explorer by visiting our site and purchasing Glass for $1500 + tax – and it now comes with your favorite shade or frame, thanks to feedback from our current Explorers. The number of spots available is limited, so mark your calendar if you want to get in. You can find us on Tuesday at: http://google.com/glass/start/how-to-get-one

Amazon buys digital comic book service Comixology for undisclosed amount

by Chris Chavez

Comixology app Android

Amazon is taking their digital content distribution one step further with the purchase of Comixology, a popular digital comic book service. Amazon and Comixology announced the news via press release, where Comixology CEO and co-founder David Steinberger says, “we look to accelerate a new age for comic books and graphic novels.”

Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, with the acquisition not becoming 100% official until the second quarter of this year. It’s not entirely clear what Amazon plans on doing with Comixology, given they already sell comic book via their Kindle apps, but Comixology will, in fact, “retain its identity as an Amazon subsidiary.” If nothing else, it’s just one more step in Amazon’s world wide conquest to offer an even wider array of digital goods.

Google strengthens Android security with enhanced malware monitoring

by Quentyn Kennemer

android security

Google’s had a tough time battling the notion that their mobile operating system is most vulnerable to malware. We’ve seen a ton of cases over the years, though none have impacted the Android community in a meaningful way (partly because Google already goes above and beyond to try and protect Google Play users).

Google has a kill switch that can obliterate any app known to be malicious, meaning it can be wiped from your phone to prevent it from doing any more damage than it already may have. Google has also implemented a built-in malware checker that scans apps at the time of install to warn you of potential danger.

Today, things go a step further with Google announcing a solution that will be able to monitor apps on the device even after install. Should an app be found to exhibit malicious behavior after it’s already made its way into the Google Play Store and onto your device Google can warn you about it the next time you start the app up.

It’s basically anti-malware in mobile form, and no disrespect to some of the more noble antivirus companies out there, but it’s probably a lot better than anything you can download from Google Play. The feature is headed to all Android phones with Android 2.3 or higher that have Google Play installed, so you won’t need to do anything to get setup with this extra bit of security.

A social experiment from the UK shows how a counterintuitive approach to charity marketing can work better than a straightforward pitch

A British charity, Pilion Trust, sent a man out on the streets of London to raise money. First, he wore a sandwich board that bore an offensive message about the poor. As the video shows, he was accosted by passers-by who defended the downtrodden

"They've hit rock bottom," one offers. "There's a reason for that."

"You should be thinking of a better way to get them off the streets," says another. Read more...
