Atari games found buried in a landfill sell for $37,000

It turns out people are willing to shell out quite a bit of money for a video game that is considered among the worst ever made
Hundreds of Atari 2600 games that were buried three decades ago were unearthed in a landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico, in April. Earlier this month, the city's Tularosa Basin Historical Society put them up for sale on eBay, and boy did it pay off.

The games were the subject of an urban legend (which turned out to be at least partially true) that a collection of E.T. video game cartridges for the Atari 2600 were buried in a New Mexico desert near an atomic bomb site to cover up the massive failure of the game. Read more...

LOS ANGELES — Whether anyone actually pays $34.99 to see Interstellar as many times as they want to, in any format, is immaterial. The brilliant stroke of movie publicity behind that offer has already done its job.
AMC Theatres and Paramount Pictures announced the unlimited ticket on Monday — and even if nobody buys one, the nation's second-largest theater chain and the Interstellar distributor will still be patting each other on the back.
SEE ALSO: To really get 'Interstellar,' you'll have to read Kip Thorne's book
That's because a promotion like this isn't a ploy to sell unlimited tickets to see Interstellar. It's a ploy to sell more regular, one-off tickets to see Interstellar. For that reason alone, it's really smart. Read more...

You can add a few new tricks to the list of stuff Google search does. Just ask your phone or tablet to flip a coin, and it will be done. This was actually announced by Google last week, but now they've added a die. Neat.
This is not actually what it looks like
If you want a coin, just say, "flip a coin," of some variation on that. The dice (it's actually a single six-sided die) is called upon by speaking the words, "roll a die," or "roll dice." Again, some variation of that including rolling and dice will probably get the job done.

Google Keep finally gets note sharing for collaborating with others, here’s how to activate it
It’s a pretty standard feature you’ll find in most note applications for Android: the ability to add other users to help collaborate or share ideas. Despite Google’s many cloud based services that allowed for collaboration since day 1, for whatever reason online sharing was overlooked when Google first introduced Google Keep last year, their simple (and free) note taking app.
Today, Google is finally ready to make up for lost time introducing the ability to finally share notes between friends, family, or colleagues using Keep. No update to the app is even needed, seems it’s already baked in. To get everything started simply open Google Keep on the web (keep.google.com) and add another Google user to a note. After that’s been done, open the Keep for Android app, and you’ll notice a new prompt notifying you of the helpful new feature.
With Google finally delivering one of the most sought after features in Keep, we wonder how this will affect other note taking applications which may suddenly find themselves obsolete thanks to Google.

We chatted with George R.R. Martin, and all he talked about was death

SANTA FE — A fully grown Arctic wolf saunters around guests near the concession stand of author George R.R. Martin's movie theater. As the wolf revels in the attention from strangers at the Jean Cocteau Cinema, Martin himself makes small talk in a corner, his peculiarly jolly laugh easily distinguished above the noise of the room
It's a scene you'd imagine would take place in an artsy, futuristic Winterfell, set long after the events of Game of Thrones' upcoming fifth season. But it's real life, happening in 2014
Martin and his team are hosting a small group of town members and charity organizers at the theater to present the local recipients of his recent Prizeo charity crowdfunding drive with their $172,485.53 checks. The beneficiaries of that campaign — in which Martin famously auctioned off three in-book deaths for donators who pledged $20,000 — are The Food Depot of New Mexico and the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary. This, it is explained to me, is why Flurry, the aforementioned large Arctic wolf, is in the house. Read more...

Download: Google Keyboard updated with new Material Design themes

Update Wednesday is here with a vengeance. The latest app to get updated with a taste of Material Design is Google Keyboard. Version 4.0 of Google’s keyboard app has two new themes to choose from: “Material Light” and “Material Dark.” These are the keyboard themes we’ve seen on the Nexus 6 and 9.
Once you download the update you’ll have to go into the setting to change the theme. The behavior of the keyboards hasn’t really changed much, but it’s a nice little facelift that should look great alongside all the other Material Design apps. If you haven’t received the update in the Play Store yet you can download the APK right here. What do you think of the new themes?
And then there were two: Google Messenger app for SMS released
The weird and wacky saga of SMS on Android continues to get weird and wacky with today's release of the new Messenger app into Google Play. The free app handles SMS and MMS duties and only SMS and MMS duties, though with more than a bit of Material Design flair. First there was Messaging, Google Voice, and Google Chat; then there was only Hangouts, and now there's two again.

Masked protestors clash with riot police on Bonfire Night in London

LONDON — Bonfire Night turned into chaos in central London on Wednesday as thousands of activists overtook the city as part of the Million Masks March, organised by activist group Anonymous.
Ten people were arrested during the evening as the crowd marched from Trafalgar Square to Parliament Square, protesting against austerity and infringement of rights. Campaigners smashed bottles and set off fireworks to huge cheers.
Comedian and actor Russell Brand, whose recently released book attacking the political system was widely panned by critics, was among the crowd. "I think we should have a loving peaceful protest," he said. "Don't get beaten up and arrested tonight." Read more...

[Lollipop Feature Spotlight] Apps Can Now Capture Screen Recordings Without Root
You might recall that Android 4.4 added support for native screen recording, but it was a very developer-oriented tool that required you to plug the device into a computer and use ADB to control the capture. Some root-only apps came about that made use of that system sans USB cable, but Android 5.0 adds an API for screen recording that doesn't require root. We're still in the early days, but it looks like there's one less reason to root now.

The Fuck Is Wrong With LeBron? Some Theories

Holy shit, the Cavaliers are 1-3! ONE AND THREE! OH MY GOD, CLEVELAND IS CLEVELANDING ALL OVER ITSELF AGAIN! Now, listen: I know that newly assembled teams like this need time to gel, and that the NBA regular season is fucking stupid, and that the Heat struggled in a similar fashion at first with LeBron, and that all of this is likely being overblown. But thinking about this in sober and rational terms is no fun at all. I DEMAND PANIC. So, with that in mind, here are a few working theories as to why the Cavaliers, and LeBron in particular, are struggling.
Which Candies Have Have The Most Sugar?

Ostensibly, this chart from WaPo's Wonkblog is about ranking candy by its sugar content so you can consume the maximum amount of sugar, and it does a fine job of that. But looking at it, all I can think about is how everything north of Gummy Bears coming in at a full 70 percent sugar is so much more alarming than I thought it would be. And just what's going on with Pixie Stix and co., not nailing the full 100? It's literally a bag full of sugar! Is the remaining serving size reserved for the paper you end up eating? You always, always end up eating a buncha paper along with your Pixie Stix.
Massive blaze at fireworks store captured on video by onlooker

LONDON — Dramatic footage has emerged of a blaze at a fireworks store in the UK on Thursday evening.
Two people are still missing after the fire in Stafford, in the West Midlands, while another four were injured. Police say one of the injured is in a "poorly condition" while the second is said to be stable after being treated
The video, filmed outside SP Fireworks by Jacob Willcox captures the intensity of the event.
Police have been working through the night coordinating with the family members of the two missing people. A 53-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
More about Uk, Fireworks, and World“We have a great deal of sensitive and challenging work to complete in order to allow us to establish the cause of the explosion and following fire. We understand the unit was storing a significant volume of fireworks which appear to have been completely destroyed during the blaze last night. This makes the ongoing examination of the scene particularly challenging and we expect to be at the scene for some time," Supt Ian Coxhead of Staffordshire Police said in a statement. Read more...

Andy Rubin, former head of Android, is leaving Google
Andy Rubin, a co-founder of Android and long time employee of Google, is leaving the company. In Android circles Rubin is best known for his time leading the Android division at Google after his company was acquired in 2005, only to move after many years to head up robotics efforts at the company instead. Sundar Pichai has led Google's Android efforts since Rubin made the move in 2013.
Since moving to lead the robotics "moonshot" at Google Rubin oversaw the acquisition of multiple robotics companies, including Boston Dynamics, to strengthen its efforts in the field.
Rubin is leaving Google to start his own company focused on technology hardware (and you can bet robots are somehow involved), though Google is still staying committed to robotics after he leaves. James Kuffner, who works in Google's robotics group, will take over Rubin's position at the top.
Angry Birds Transformers Arrives In The Play Store—Don't Roll Your Eyes At Me, It's Actually Pretty Fun
Angry Birds games have a long and complicated history. The original was a huge hit, but each successive attempt felt less interesting. The few times Rovio has branched out have been... not awesome. Angry Birds Transformers, however, is unexpectedly entertaining.
In this title, the birds and pigs have been transformed into Autobots and Decepticons, respectively. In each level your chosen Transformer runs through the level while you tap on objects in the background for him or her to blast.

You can barely see the bezel on LG’s latest display
LG Display has announced a remarkable achievement for folks who can’t stand those annoying black bars bordering their screens. The company has developed a 5.3-inch full HD LCD panel that has a bezel width of 0.7mm, which is said to be thinner than the width of a standard credit card.
That mark gives them the title of thinnest bezel in the industry, and there are some pretty darn thin ones out there. LG gave us a pretty good rundown of how they were able to achieve the feat:
To realize the 0.7mm bezel width on the left and right sides of the panel, which is narrower than the 0.8mm thickness of a credit card, LG Display used its “Neo Edge” module processing technology and the world’s first “Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT)” technology.
LG Display’s Neo Edge technology uses an adhesive instead of double-sided tape to attach and completely seal the total area and edges of the panel’s circuit board and backlight unit. Because there is no plastic guide panel to attach the panel and backlight, the Neo Edge technology helps achieve minimal bezel width, while blocking light leakage and being waterproof and dustproof.
The adhesive seal also prevents corrosion that sometimes occurs along the edge of the glass panel when double-sided tape is used, while dramatically improving the panel’s durability despite the narrow bezel because of increased elasticity as the adhesive hardens.
The company’s AIT technology, exclusively developed by LG Display, reduces the need for bezel space because the touch panel is embedded into the LCD module. The technology offers a slim design and excellent touch, while saving costs since a separate process for touch functions is not required.
LG’s all set to begin mass production of the display this November, with Chinese markets set to get first dibs on distribution (mainly due to the advent of demand for displays by many of the country’s up-and-coming OEMs). LG says they’ll also be promoting it and shopping it out on a global scale to anyone finding themselves in need of such a display.
We imagine the company will eventually want to get one of these things loaded up into their own smartphones, though they certainly aren’t talking about any possible internal uses today.
