Slipknot Get Illustrated By ‘The Walking Dead’ Artist For Metal Hammer

by wookubus

Metal Hammer roped in Slipknot/Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor to guest edit their new issue. In addition to that, they had ‘The Walking Dead‘ (comics, not the TV series) penciller/artist Charlie Adlard illustrate the band for a foldout poster and by the looks of it, cover as well. For more of that, hit up the aforementioned link.

Ronda Rousey hits back at Walmart over autobiography kerfuffle

by Sam Laird

UFC superstar Ronda Rousey used Instagram on Wednesday to fire back at Walmart after the commerce giant said it wouldn't carry her forthcoming autobiography on store shelves

Rousey is an extremely popular mixed martial arts fighter whose celebrity appeal has recently spread beyond sports, thanks to her fighting ability, good looks and spunky personality. She has a role in the Hollywood blockbuster Furious 7, for example.

But all that's apparently not enough for Walmart to carry her book, called My Fight / Your Fight, in stores.

A New York Post report said the mega-chain won't carry Rousey's book because "she's too violent." Given that Walmart sells guns and ammunition in its stores, this struck many as wildly hypocritical even though the Post report is unattributed Read more...

Creepy statue of Lucille Ball will get a makeover from a new sculptor

by Patrick Kulp

The mayor of Lucille Ball's hometown of Celoron, New York, says he'll hire a new sculptor to "fix" the village's much-maligned statue of the 1950s sitcom star after criticism of the public artwork drew worldwide attention.

Mayor Scott Schrecengost said Tuesday he has spoken with a sculptor who agreed to fix the life-sized bronze statue of Lucy for less than the $10,000 quoted years ago by the original sculptor, Dave Poulin.

The announcement comes only hours after Poulin told The Associated Press he was willing to create a new statue for free. The mayor says he doesn't want Poulin to redo the work; Poulin said he's fine with that decision. Read more...

ISIS flyer bans skinny jeans, mustaches and shaving

by Brian Ries

Militants with the Islamic State in Raqqa northern Syria, recently distributed a flyer that warns people there against wearing skinny jeans, growing mustaches or shaving.

The only option for male facial fashion, as the illustration on the flyer makes clear, is a traditional beard.

ISIS Flyer Full

A flyer reportedly handed out in territory controlled by the Islamic State warns against shaving, skinny jeans and mustaches, according to a Syrian activist group.

Syrian activists told Mashable last week that the group recently banned cigarettes and music, with penalties that include imprisonment for a period of ten days, during which time those being held are given an Islamic course. At the end of detention, the activists say, the offender is then given a test on what he or she has learned. Read more...

Twitter rolls out revamped “Quote Tweet” feature, coming soon to Android

by Quentyn Kennemer

twitter quote retweet 2

Twitter has always been somewhat against quoted Tweets when it comes to sharing, and for good reason. The original tweet often takes up too many characters for the person who’s sharing to make any sort of comment of their own.

twitter quote retweet 1

Thankfully they’re introducing an all new system that allows users to embed a Tweet within a tweet. You get all 140 of your own characters to write, and the Tweet you’re quoting / commenting on is shown right below.

Only, there’s one catch for us Android users — we can’t use it yet. It’s rolling out to the web and iOS versions already, but Android has been put on the infamous waiting list. We’re hoping the wait won’t be too long, but in the meantime you can check out Twitter’s quick set of instructions right here to get familiar with the system ahead of its arrival (and give it a try on the web version of Twitter if you aren’t above that sort of thing these days).

Instagram rolls out new photo editing tools for Android first, coming soon to iOS

by Chris Chavez
Chanoatx

Bout time we get something first. haha

Instagram 6.19.0 update color fade

Well, I’ll be… Never thought I’d see the day an app update would hit Android users before those on iOS, especially an app as big as Instagram. I have to admit… it feels kinda good.

In any case, an update to Instagram — available now on Android and coming soon to iOS — is bringing a few new photo editing tools to the social network. The 2 new options include the ability to alter the tint of shadows in an image (Color), and lighten up shadows for a retro film look (Fade). While Color intensity can’t be adjusted, Fade can, allowing users to add a little or a whole lot.

In another small, but huge addition, Instagram is finally giving users the option to subscribe to their favorite ‘grammers. Simply hit up someone’s profile page, click the 3-dot menu and select “Turn on Post Notifications” and you’ll receive a notification on your phone every time that person uploads a new photo (previously, I had to use an IFTTT recipe to accomplish this). This is extremely useful for those that follow a boat load of people on Instagram and often times miss out on photos from their favorite users. This option is available right now for both Android and iOS users.

With every passing update, Instagram is slowing finding itself poised to tackle hardcore photo editing apps like VSCO Cam who have typically offered users a far greater set of tools and higher quality uploads. Now, if Instagram could only drop the square requirement, increase the resolution of their photos, and fix the poor upload quality on Android devices — they just might be able to sway over photo enthusiasts.

You can find Instagram 6.19.0 on Google Play right now.

Instruction manuals? Who reads instruction manuals anymore?

Instructional manuals are for dummies. As high-tech as Samsung's Galaxy S and Galaxy Note Android phones are, they're victims of feature creep, or features and services added to a product that confuses users to the point of frustration.

Samsung's phones are so bloated that it's not always clear how to do something and what special features it might have. The problem is, most features are tucked away in the Settings app.

Not to worry, we're here to help. Below, you'll find eight hidden features exclusive to Samsung's Galaxy smartphones that we've plucked out from the Settings app's endless list of menus. Read more...

Google debuts the Chromebit, a Chromebook dongle for under $100

by Karissa Bell
Chromebit
Feed-twFeed-fb

Google has a new device in its growing Chromebook family, and it's called Chromebit.

The Chromebit looks more like Chromecast than a Chromebook, but the dongle has almost all of the internal components of Google's browser-based laptops crammed into a stick smaller than an iPhone 6. Google revealed the new Chrome OS-based device, which will be available later this year, along with a new lineup of low-cost Chromebooks on Tuesday.

The Asus-made Chromebit has the guts of a standard Chromebook — 2GB of RAM, Rockchip's 3288 processor and 16GB of storage — all stuffed into a dongle that is closer to the size of a Roku Streaming Stick than a laptop. It will cost less than $100 when it goes on sale this summer, though exact pricing and availability aren't yet clear. Read more...

Gmail update brings a unified inbox for all your email accounts

by Chris Chavez

Gmail All Inboxes View tablet

After Gmail recently added the ability to add accounts from Yahoo, Outlook, and the like, Google is adding another helpful feature those living the multiple account lifestyle will no doubt appreciate.

Today the Gmail team announced a new update — which should already be live in your Google Play Store app — that brings a single unified inbox for all your email accounts. The unified inbox appears under the “All inboxes” option in the slide-out menu, but unfortunately it can’t be selected as the default view. At least not yet anyway. What’s more is Gmail’s conversation view now plays nice with your Yahoo, IMAP/POP email accounts, condensing those long email conversations an into a single, easy to organize thread.

Gmail has also improved autocomplete when searching for older messages, making it faster than ever before, while adding new arrow animations when opening/closing a conversation, larger attachment previews, and the ability to save to your Google Drive with a single tap.

If waiting simple isn’t an option for you, you can always download the apk from us right here: Gmail 5.1

Hiker's incredible transformation captured in selfies over 2,600 mile journey

by Max Knoblauch
Hike
Feed-twFeed-fb

The Pacific Crest Trail is a 2,600 mile path from the Mexican border and up to British Columbia. Over a period of five months, photographer Andy Davidhazy hiked its entirety, stopping each mile to take a selfie.

He then created a time-lapse video of each of the 2,660 selfies he'd taken along the way. The change in the landscape, scenery and Davidhazy's weight and facial hair are incredible to watch in just under five minutes.

When all was said and done, Davidhazy had lost 50 pounds and grown and removed a pretty killer beard.

TAG Heuer teams up with Intel and Google to build first real smartwatch, will be announced tomorrow [RUMOR]

by Chris Chavez

TAG Heuer CARRERA 1

High-end watchmaker TAG Heuer is building a smartwatch, but they can’t do it on their own. The watch is said to be officially revealed tomorrow, with CEO Jean-Claude Biver telling Bloomberg in an interview that the Swiss company had to rely on key partnerships inside Silicon Valley to help build the smartwatch, as Switzerland was lacking the necessary tech know-how.

Exactly who are these partners? According to Reuters, Intel has already signed on to supply the processor, while Pocketlint is reporting that Google is also onboard, who we guess will likely provide the OS. That means, we could be looking at a luxury Android Wear smartwatch to compete with the Apple Watch.

Biver notes that while the internal components and OS will be American, the rest of the watch (casing, dial, crown, and design) is all Swiss. The watch will be a near replica of their current black Carrera watch, which retails for around $3,000 depending on the exact model. Needless to say, we don’t expect this new smartwatch will come cheap.

We expect to learn more tomorrow when the new smartwatch is officially unveiled.

Android Auto app lands on the Google Play Store, compatible with all Lollipop devices

by Chris Chavez

Android Auto big

Android Auto compatible head units have already begun shipping, but don’t expect to just plug in any old Android device and hope everything will just work. A new Android Auto app has been added into the Play Store enabling this functionality on Lollipop+ devices. The app brings a simple driver friendly UI, all powered by your Android device and mirrored onto the head unit.

Here’s what you’ll find in the Android Auto app:

  • Navigation with Google Maps – Free turn-by-turn navigation with lane guidance, live traffic conditions, points of interest, and more
  • Hands-free phone and messaging – Make calls and send messages without taking your hands off the wheel
  • Info and assistance – Get weather, traffic, commute information and more organized into simple cards
  • Bring your music – Listen to your music and playlists in the car with your built-in stereo system

Android Auto app collage

Chances are, you don’t have a compatible automobile or head unit just yet, so you may want to bookmark the app for future use. We wonder how long it’ll be before Google begins preloading this onto devices with their current app suite. Check out Google’s promo video below.

Instagram introduces Layout, a separate app for creating photo collages (coming soon to Android)

by Chris Chavez

Layout from Instagram

One can argue that Instagram is largely responsible for this boom of photo collage applications found in app stores like Google Play. The fact that Instagram never felt the need to build this kind of functionality into their app — or allowed users to share more than a single photo at a time — meant hardcore IG’ers had to search elsewhere.

There’s a huge business built around it too. Perform a quick search and you’re sure to find endless pages of apps. While a few get the job done, most feel like a hack job with a user interface that’s clunky, and output quality that can be lacking.

Rather than build this functionality inside Instagram (like many of their users have been clamoring for), Instagram is introducing a completely separate app. It’s called “Layout from Instagram” and it allows users to compile photo collages for easy sharing to the photos-only social network.

The app is painfully easy to use. You can either snap photos on the spot using Layout’s photo booth feature, or you can select from the most recent photos in your gallery. Photos from your gallery are grouped in separate tabs: all, faces (which only chooses photos with people in them), or recents (photos you’ve recently used in an collage).

After you’ve selected the photos you’d like to compile, you can choose the layout that suits your photos best and then adjust them accordingly. You can drag and drop to reorganize, tap a photo to bring up the handles and resize, or mirror and flip to mix things up. After you’re satisfied with the way your photos look, you can share to Instagram, Facebook, or anywhere else.

Instagram says ‘Layout from Instagram’ will be hitting Android devices in the coming months, with iOS availability right now.

Buy a Samsung Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge from T-Mobile and get an entire year of Netflix for free

by Chris Chavez

Sasmung Galaxy S6 Calendar Clock app icon DSC08966

Whether you have a contract about to expire or you’re on the fence about the Samsung Galaxy S6, T-Mobile is looking to sweeten the deal for you. Besides being one of the few carriers in the US to offer unlimited data plans, T-Mobile and Samsung will now throw in a full year of Netflix for those buying a Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge, absolutely free of charge. If you do the quick math ($9 a month), that’s right around a $100+ value.

The offer is only available between March 27th through April 9th. After a purchase has been made, you’ll receive a promo code that you’ll need to submit by May 21st on Samsung’s promotions page here. It’s still unclear if this can be added to those who already have a Netflix subscription.

Unfortunately, like all the other carriers in the US, T-Mobile was mum on actual availability, still not giving us a solid date on when we can expect the device to launch. We imagine it’ll be around the time of the phone’s global launch on April 10th, but in the meantime, you can sign up for notifications via T-Mobile pre-register page here.

Google integrates My Maps with Google Maps for Android

by Quentyn Kennemer

google my maps

Google My Maps users have been frustrated that they can’t get their custom maps in Google Maps, and rightfully so. But that issue has finally been eradicated: Google has finally brought My Maps functionality to the Google Maps for Android app.

My Maps allows people to specify routes and points of interest on a map. This is useful for, say, bikers and runners who want to remember their favorite routes or share them with others, or for navigating a golf course.

You can only make My Maps on the web or with the separate My Maps app, but once you’ve gotten them loaded up they’ll be available for use in Google Maps. Be sure to give it a try!
