Dash cam footage that captured the violent 2013 arrest of a 30-year-old black man by a Dover, Delaware, police officer was deemed no longer confidential by a federal judge and posted to the Dover Police Department's YouTube channel on Thursday.

The video shows the man, Lateef Dickerson, being stopped by two police officers on Aug. 24, 2013. As he lowers himself to the ground, submitting to the officers' calls to do just that, one of the police officers kicks the man directly in the head.

His yellow hat goes flying and Dickerson falls to the pavement unconscious, his jaw broken. Read more...

Report: Android M will allow users to block app permissions upon installation

by Chris Chavez

Facebook Permissions

A new report out of Bloomberg claims Google is finally about to give Android users the one feature they’ve been asking for years now: the ability to hand-pick specific permissions to grant an app upon installation. It’s supposed to be just one of the many features coming in Android M, Google’s next major Android release said to debut at this year’s Google I/O.

Privacy is a growing concern amongst mobile users, with some even forgoing installing certain apps because of their lengthy permission requests (Facebook being the first that comes to mind). It’s not entirely clear which permissions you’ll be able to block (all or just some of them?) but basic permissions like photos, location, and contacts were the ones that were named.

Because often times an app needs many of these permissions to function properly, giving users the ability to block each and every permissions but not be the best move. Not everyone understands that. We’re guessing it’ll be something similar to how iOS asks the user to grant apps permission to access their gallery, or camera app in order to function. In either case, giving users more control of their OS is never a bad thing.

An Instagram video captured the shocking moment a man viciously clobbered two gay men over their heads with a chair at a New York City barbecue restaurant Tuesday night

Police tell Mashable they are investigating the attack, which friends are calling a "hate crime."

The incident was sparked at Dallas BBQ in Chelsea when a man tried to intervene in a fight between his partner and an unidentified patron of the restaurant. In the video, the attacker, who police describe as a 35-year-old, 6-foot, 4-inch black male, then walks up from behind them with a wooden chair raised high in the air before smashing it down over their heads. New England Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady was "generally aware" that his locker room staff deflated footballs after they were examined by a referee during the Jan. 18 American Football Conference Championship Game against the Indianapolis Colts, a league-sanctioned investigation into the incident found.

"We have concluded that it is more probable than not that Jim McNally (the Officials Locker Room attendant for the Patriots) and John Jastremski (an equipment assistant for the Patriots) participated in a deliberate effort to release air from Patriots game balls after the balls were examined by the referee," said a report on the incident, dubbed "DeflateGate." Camera experts say the Samsung Galaxy S6 has the best smartphone camera ever

by Quentyn Kennemer

Samsung Galaxy S6 DSC09411

The Samsung Galaxy S6 has a damn fine camera. You’ve heard us sing our praises for it in our review of the phone. But what about camera experts who professionally analyze these things?

DXOMark is one such outlet, and in their latest analysis they’ve determined that the Samsung Galaxy S6 (and Edge) has the best smartphone camera ever. The device edged out the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 from last year, though we’re sure Samsung doesn’t mind their latest flagship beating out another one of their heavy hitters.

DXOMark gave the camera an 86 out of 100, where the final score is comprised of an average of separate scores for both photo and video quality. For photo, the Samsung Galaxy S6 scored 90 or higher in areas of exposure and contrast, autofocus capabilities and its ability to accurately capture the texture of a subject. It also got high marks in color, noise and flash. Artifacts is the only questionable score at 79.

Video performance was a tad worse overall, but not low enough that Samsung should feel ashamed. It’s especially strong in areas of auto focus and noise reduction, and performed well in exposure and contrast, texture and artifacts. Stabilization was a lowly 59, which is a bit of a bummer.

You can read DXOMark’s full notes and review right here if you’re interested, and if the camera is a major point of emphasis in your smartphone purchasing decision then we’d say you’ll have nothing to worry about.

Chino Moreno Reveals New Deftones Album Release Date, European Tour Set For November

by wookubus

Deftones frontman Chino Moreno guested on the ‘Rock Show With Daniel P Carter‘ and revealed the tentative release date (in his own words) for the bands new studio album to be September 25th. Speaking on the bands current progress with the effort, Moreno said he’s currently finishing up the vocals for it:

“The record as far as music has been all recorded and I am currently working on the vocals. I’ve been recording from my home studio here in Oregon. Slowly but surely getting it done. It’s coming out really good, it’s another Deftones record, I feel like us reaching a little bit, getting more into… The song structures, trying to challenge ourselves a little bit you know what I mean? It’s sounding good, I think it’s gonna be a great record.”

Moreno also spoke about their upcoming full album performance of “Around The Fur“, which will take place at this years ‘Amnesia Rockfest‘ in Montebello, QC:

“One of these festivals we’re doing “Around The Fur” in its entirety, which should be fun. It might be a little bit of a challenge, cause there’s some songs on that record that we haven’t played for years. We’ve yet to really rehearse for that. That was before I started playing guitar too so, it’s just like all I gotta do is go out there and sing for like 45 minutes. It should be pretty easy, but who’s to say.”

The Deftones have also newly announced that they will be playing some select dates in Europe and the UK in November as well:

11/15 Paris, FRA – Bataclan
11/18 Berlin, GER – Columbiahalle
11/19 Cologne, GER – Koln Palladium
11/21 London, UK – The SSE Arena Wembley

Their summer plans will see them on tour in North America with Incubus and more as part of this trek.

Here’s How All Those Albums You Downloaded Years Ago Leaked Before Their Release Date

by wookubus

A lengthy yet interesting read over at Newyorker.com goes into great detail on the mp3 scene that emerged around the late 90’s. Specifically it focuses on key players from the scene group RNS, and just how they were able to release so many albums before their official release date. Though their calling cards were albums from Eminem, Jay-Z and many more, the group were also responsible for their various metal and rock leaks. A small sampling of their output includes the likes of Queens Of The Stone Age‘s “Rated R“, Limp Bizkit‘s “Significant Other“, Korn‘s “See You On The Other Side“, Megadeth‘s “The World Needs A Hero“, Deftones‘ self-titled album and many more.

As it turns out, the key source of the leaks, which numbered over 20,000 releases, was an intricate number of workers smuggling music out of a manufacturing plant based in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Bennie Lydell Glover was identified as the ringleader of that part of the operation of sorts, which saw employees skirting security measures and inventory accounting through means of falsely disposing of product they claimed was defective, among other ways. Workers would dispose of product with rubber gloves wrapped around the CD’s that would stop them from being fed into a disposal machine and later smuggle them out past random security scans and the like behind belt buckles and such.

The reward for Glover was a monetary one, with the resulting access he got to pre-release media, including music, games, software, etc. allowing him to bootleg various material around his hometown and supplement his income. The F.B.I. eventually caught up with most of the high level members of the group, with some serving time and some being acquitted. If you’ve got the time and want to learn just how it all went down, dig in at Newyorker.com.

Jack Nicholson's reaction to Jared Leto's Joker was perfect

by Eitan Levine

Jack Nicholson feels the same way we all do about Jared Leto's as the Joker.

Getting Jared Leto to play The Joker for the upcoming Suicide Squad movie was a weird choice, but we all kinda went along with it. After all, Heath Ledger seemed like an odd choice for the Joker in The Dark Knight, but his version of Batman's most sadistic villain ended up becoming memorably brilliant. "Hey, if Heath Ledger can do it, so can Jared Leto" was essentially our shared motto for the past few weeks.

Then David Ayer released a picture of Jared Leto as The Joker on Friday and the Internet instantly regretted giving the benefit of the doubt to anything ever. Read more...

Could a cheap Nexus Fi Android Phone be Google’s next big unveil? [OPINION]

by Derek Ross

Nexus_2015

With the announcement of Project Fi and rumors surrounding a Huawei Nexus, I thought I’d have some fun with speculation, for the sake of hypebeasting something, since we haven’t hypebeasted in a while, so let’s let the hypebeasting begin. Hypebeast.

Are you ready? The above image is taken from a Project Fi video guide. This is clearly a phone or a render that we haven’t seen before. Google generally doesn’t use renders from unknown devices in their product videos. Project Fi only works with the Nexus 6, so why not use a Nexus 6 render, the phone that people have to use with the service right now? If you’re not going to use the Nexus 6, then you better show the guide videos on another supported phone, right? That makes sense to me.

Could this phone just be a generic render? Sure. Absolutely. That takes the fun out of hypbeasting though. And we came here to hypebeast, dammit.

What if the Android phone pictured above is the upcoming, rumored Huawei Nexus? It looks like a cross between the Nexus 6, mainly because of the top speaker grill, and a Nexus 5. Could it be a cheaper Nexus, built for Project Fi? A Nexus Fi, if you will, a play on Nexus Five and Project Fi?

Now, hear me out. Project Fi, as a marriage of cellular data and WiFi is cool, but that’s still a tough sell, because you have to buy a $700 smartphone to use the service. Sure, you can finance the Nexus 6 through Fi, but you still end up having to pay for the cost of an expensive phone over the next two years.

What if the rumored Huawei Nexus is a cheaper Nexus, built with Project Fi in mind. Right now, I can go out and buy a Motorola Moto E, Motorola Moto G or upcoming Huawei SnapTo on the cheap and jump on my MVNO of choice, except for Fi of course. While Fi isn’t your typical MVNO, having your MVNO locked down to one expensive phone doesn’t sound very appealing either.

Having a cheaper Nexus phone that worked on Project Fi sounds more Googly to me. Google is about service availability. Having a cheaper Nexus that’s available to budget conscious people, you know, those looking to save money on their wireless bill, sounds a whole lot better to me than the current setup at launch. I think having a Nexus Fi phone could seal the deal on this entire endeavor.

So, what do you think of my speculation? Plausible? Or I am reading too much into the generic render above, for the sake of hypebeasting? Who knows? Either way, I enjoyed confirming the launch of Half-Life 3. Cheers!

Chipotle teams up with Postmates to deliver foil-wrapped heaven straight to your door

by Chris Chavez

Chipotle ride

Chipotle is arguably one of the greatest inventions of modern day times. Not the sauce, mind you. We’re talking about that fine eatery that serves up piping fresh Mexican-esque food by the pound. Until Chipotles start popping up on every street corner with a drive-thru window, they’re not exactly the most convenient place to grab a quick bite.

Anyone stuck at work or watching the kids, like us, has probably dreamed of the day Chipotle would make home deliveries. Well, that time is now. During their Q1 2015 earnings call, Chipotle officially revealed that they’ve teamed up with anything-delivery service (food, household goods, etc.) Postmates to hand deliver those wonderful custom built burritos/bowls/tacos straight to your door.

Online and mobile deliveries are already taking place in 67 different cities where Postmates currently operates, although it apparently caps delivery costs to around $5 to $8 depending on distance. At $10 for a decked out burrito alone, you could be paying almost double just to have it delivered to your couch.

In either case, you may want to sign up for a Postmates, even if it’s not available in your city quite yet. With over $500,000 worth of Chipotle orders already delivered, it’s clear someone out there is buying.
