Lake Travis, Austin's main reservoir, rises astonishing 22 feet in 1 week

by Andrew Freedman

Feed-twFeed-fb

The astounding amounts of rain that have fallen in Texas and Oklahoma during the past few weeks has led Lake Travis, one of the city of Austin's main reservoirs, to go from the poster child of drought to healthy reservoir in just several days

As of May 26 at 9:45 a.m. CDT, the water level in Lake Travis was 655.52 high, up from 633.56 feet on May 19. That's a difference of nearly 22 feet. And going back further in time, to one month ago, the lake was at just 629.38 feet of water, which means it rose 26 feet over that period

Lake Travis is expected to rise to 657 to 660 feet by Wednesday – that’s up more than 22 ft in the last week.

17 majestic mountains that will have you packing your bags

As the refrain goes, there are two types of people in the world: those who like mountains and those who prefer beaches.

Beach people are extroverts, while mountain people tend to be introverts, one study found. But whichever you are, there's no denying the beauty of these amazing mountains, as photographed by travelers.

For its April photography contest, Intrepid Travel asked travelers to submit photos of the wilderness, including national parks, jungles and mountains. The mountain shots they received, in particular, look amazing (check them out, below). Read more...

iOS and Android users will be able to use Microsoft's Cortana

by Stan Schroeder

Feed-twFeed-fb

Microsoft's digital voice assistant Cortana is coming to Android phones and iPhones this summer, Microsoft announced Tuesday

Cortana will be able to do most of the things it does on the PC or a Windows phone, including answering your questions, giving you reminders and tracking your flights, Microsoft explained in a blog post, confirming rumors of the migration that circulated earlier this year.

Microsoft's voice assistant will be a part of a suite of apps, supported on all three major mobile platforms and installed via a desktop app called the Phone Companion. The Phone Companion is an interesting proposition — you mostly won't need it for a Windows Phone device, which will be integrated with Windows 10 out of the box. But if you have an iPhone or an Android, installing the apps offered by the Phone Companion will make it work much more closely with Windows 10 Read more...

Souped-up Batmobile spotted on 'Suicide Squad' set chasing the Joker

by Yohana Desta

Feed-twFeed-fb

Batman's trusty Batmobile has raced over to the set of Suicide Squad.

The souped-up ride, set to make its premiere in the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, was spotted on the Suicide Squad set in Toronto. Ben Affleck, who plays Batman, wasn't reported to be anywhere on set, despite his ride being filmed for what looks like an upcoming scene.

Passers-by near the set captured video of the Batmobile chasing the Joker (played by Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (played by Margot Robbie) around in his bright red sports car

Suicide Squad director David Ayer was probably trying to keep the Batmobile appearance under wraps, but in the age of smartphones, that's nearly impossible. Numerous bystanders recorded footage of the Batmobile scene and quickly uploaded to YouTube, Instagram and Twitter Read more...

[Rumor] No Nexus Tablet In 2015, But Two Phones—A 5.2-Inch LG (Code Name Angler) And A 5.7-Inch Huawei (Code Name Bullhead)

by Ryan Whitwam

The Nexus 6 was a break from the past for the Nexus program with its high price tag and massive size, but it was probably an emergency replacement after the collapse of Android Silver. We've been wondering if Google would recommit to the Nexus program, and it's sounding like yes—in a big way. We've gotten some details on two alleged Nexus phones for 2015, but there are currently no plans for a tablet.

Iron Man Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge has been fully revealed — here’s the official unboxing video

by Quentyn Kennemer

iron man galaxy s6 1

Samsung has been teasing the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Iron Man edition for quite some time, but the goods have finally been fully revealed. It’s everything we imagined it would be, with a very nice red chassis accented with some elegant-looking gold (including Iron Man’s logo plastered on the back looking as mean as ever).

What’s even better is that this thing will also ship with an Iron Man-themed wireless charger. It’ll also obviously have Samsung’s Iron Man TouchWiz theme pre-installed (though that’s just as easy to change as any theme).

iron man galaxy s6 2

Everything else is the Galaxy S6 Edge as you know it, with this particular variant coming with a standard storage count of 64GB.

Unfortunately availability for this thing won’t be widespread for now, with Samsung  only confirming launches for China, Hong Kong and their home turf of South Korea. The earliest landing date will be May 27th — that’s tomorrow — so if you’re keen on importing one you’ll want to look into it as soon as possible because we’re sure this limited run won’t last.

[Update] You can now download Periscope for Android

by Quentyn Kennemer

periscope logo

Waiting for Periscope to hit Android? The app will be launching today according to press information sent out by the company. If you aren’t aware, Periscope is Twitter’s new live streaming service that’ll allow you to quickly and easily broadcast a live stream from your phone and Tweet it out to your followers. Those followers can then get a quick and easy link to tune into what’s going on.

It was previously only available for iOS, though Twitter had always said Android wasn’t far off. The app is largely the same as its iOS counterpart, with a stream of broadcasts you can explore or an easy button to launch one of your own. It also has some unique features, such as a button in your notification tray to easily return to a broadcast if you were interrupted (by a call or message). It also features Material Design for those who are into that sort of thing.

periscope for android

The concept of Persicope is simple, yet its presence is important. While live streaming itself isn’t new, it hasn’t always been easy to do from the limited confines of a mobile phone. This app makes it easy to broadcast important events outside your home without having a clunky or professional setup.

Whether it be something as fun as a concert after-party or sensitive local events (Baltimore, anyone?), Periscope opens up a whole new avenue of live social media coverage. Periscope for Android will require Android 4.4 KitKat, though that shouldn’t be too tall an order with a vast majority of Android users being on that particular flavor. You can’t actually download it yet, but the app should be going live over at Google Play at some point later today, and we expect it’ll show up right here. Keep an eye out!

[Update]: It’s live! Go grab it as soon as possible!

These all-female movie remakes really need to happen

by Andrea Romano

Ghostbusters isn't the only movie getting an all-female remake.

In honor of NBC's charity event Red Nose Day, celebrities like Anna Kendrick and the cast of Orange is the New Black appeared in some all-female parody movie reboots — with new titles such as Indianna Jones and Reservoir Bitches.

Hollywood needs to get to work, because we'd really like these films to be more than pipe dreams.

The men haven't been totally cast out, though. Woody Allen fans can surely find a new appreciation for Paul Rudd in Danny Hall.

NASA captures best photo yet of strange lights on dwarf planet Ceres

by Miriam Kramer

Feed-twFeed-fb

NASA's Dawn spacecraft has done it again. The prolific probe has captured its best image yet of the strange bright spots on the dwarf planet Ceres.

This photo is just the latest in a series of "best bright spot photos yet" as Dawn moves into a closer orbit around Ceres, the largest body in the main belt of asteroids between Mars and Jupiter. The new image shows off the reflective spots seen in one of Ceres' many craters by Dawn earlier in the probe's mission.

Scientists haven't yet pinpointed the cause of the bright spots, but NASA wants to know what you think they might be. The space agency has opened a voting pool, asking members of the public to decide what they think is causing the reflectivity. Voting choices include "ice," "volcano," "geyser" and "salt deposit," plus a catch-all "other" category Read more...

Southwest baggage handlers accused of running marijuana smuggling ring

by Jessica Plautz

Baggage handlers, working for Southwest Airlines out of the Oakland airport, have been accused of running a marijuana ring, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency.

A total of 14 people were charged in the Northern District of California for criminal conspiracy. Three of them — Kenneth Wayne Fleming, 32; Keith Ramon Mayfield, 34; and Michael Herb Videau, 28 — were Bay Area natives working as baggage handlers for the airline.

According to the DEA, the handlers carried luggage and backpacks filled with marijuana into the Oakland airport, then handed them off to passengers who had gone through the regular TSA screening. (Baggage handlers and several other airport employees are not required to go through screenings.) The passengers then flew with the drugs to other cities, including New Orleans, Louisiana, and Little Rock, Arkansas, according to The Guardian. Read more...

Google Maps gets improved traffic alerts in time for Memorial Day

by Quentyn Kennemer

google maps

Google has detailed a new update for Google Maps that’ll help you avoid the dreadful result of a busy society: congested traffic. The company’s improved traffic alerts will now let you know if there is heavy traffic en route to your destination and will let you select an alternate route, if available.

The app will also update you on traffic conditions once you’ve already started your journey. It’ll let you know if congestion lies ahead, and — if so — will attempt to estimate how long you’ll be stuck. All of this is in preparation for the upcoming Memorial Day, though the feature will obviously stick well beyond that.

Google says the update will be in Google Play in time for the weekend so be sure to keep an eye out if you think you’ll need the future ahead of then.

Brilliant idiot turns 16 years of selfies into epic time lapse [VIDEO]

by Rob Jackson

He calls himself an idiot… we’d say he’s brilliant.

You’re featured in some devastatingly awesome photobombs. You’ve mastered the art of the duckface. Your front facing camera skills put the Selfie Stick to shame. Brag all you want… you’re a rookie compared to this guy who took 16 years of selfies and compiled them all into one mind-blowing video.

He calls himself an idiot (probably to generate more clicks) but I’d say moreso a self-depracating genius. It takes a lot of foresight and vision to start such a project before mobile phones were popular. Heck, before modern day selfies were invented.

The photos are creatively compiled on his site, allowing you to experience them in different ways:

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 5.40.12 PM

His name is JK Keller and here are some interesting facts from this truly interesting project:

  • He used Adobe After Affects Image Stabilization Plugin to maintain consistency across photos
  • The project started out of spite when his girlfriend mocked his expensive purchase (Nikon Coolpix 900) by sarcastically asking, “Are you going to use it every day?”
  • He was 22 years old when he started the project on October 1st, 1998
  • He plans on continuing the project (and updating the videos) until the day he dies
  • He doesn’t smile so the images are objective and similar across days, months, years, and decades
  • There is 8 months of missing data during which time JK was a janitor in Antarctica. This is not a joke.

Now this is a guy with whom I’d like to sit down and have a cup of coffee. It’s one thing to have the idea, it’s another thing to start it, but consistently keeping at it for 16 years without some overarching motivation besides self interest? This is a real artist at work.

That being said, JK readily admits that he’s not the first to pursue such projects and acknowledges he won’t be the last. He has even compiled a list of related photo projects for those who enjoy his own.

Do you now feel inspired to dream up a project of long-term creativity of your own? Because I sure do…

Osama bin Laden was an avid reader.

The al Qaeda leader and 9/11 mastermind spent years in hiding after the United States invaded Afghanistan. He was eventually traced to a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where he was killed by commandos in a 2011 raid.

On Wednesday, the U.S. released a "sizable tranche of documents" taken from the compound that night, which included a list of the English-language books found on bin Laden's bookshelf.

Among them are a simplistic guide to understanding Islam, Bob Woodward's Obama's Wars and Noam Chomsky's Hegemony or Survival. Read more...

Or at least, the best it has to offer according to TripAdvisor, which released its list of the top-rated BBQ joints on Wednesday.

The travel website compiled the rankings based on several criteria. First, restaurants had to have at least 100 reviews. Then those reviews were ranked by quantity and quality, with recent reviews — those written in the past year — worth more. Meanwhile, chain restaurants with more than 10 locations were excluded, according to TripAdvisor. Read more...

The good news is that Spotify has 15 million paying customers, making it the biggest subscription music service in the world. Its brand is synonymous with the modern music world. It generates valuable data about its listeners that can be used to identify the next big artists

Now, the bad news
