Sherlock Holmes Sucks At Deduction Sometimes [Video]

by Nicole Wakelin
Tom Wright

Ah, Pete Holmes. I love when he fires the X-Men.

Capture_Upload

Sherlock Holmes manages to come up with all sorts of information about people by picking up on a zillion clues with just one glance, but he’s not always right. This hilarious video from The Pete Holmes Show finally shows us Sherlock on one of his off days. He still rattles off all his deductions, but they’re not even close. Watch him lose his cool, get back his game, and show the world who’s boss.

The Ridiculous Superhero Shirts for Girls and Women at Universal's Islands of Adventure

by Amy
Tom Wright

Preach it, sister.

Ah, Universal's Islands of Adventure. Home of Wizarding World, Jurassic Park, Marvel Super Hero Island, and some really lame t-shirt choices for females. I noticed the disparity on my first visit to the park two years ago. For shirts made for boys and men, the designs prominently featured symbols like Captain America's shield, graphics of various heroes, or the X-Men logo. If there was a shirt with text, it said something along the lines of "Be a Hero." There were no shirts about wanting to date Storm or Spider-Woman or shirts featuring She-Hulk that said, "My girlfriend has super strength." Nope.

But when it came to t-shirts for girls and women, there were few designs - in fact, I can only remember seeing two - like there were for men. I wanted a women's shirt featuring Cap's shield, and I couldn't find it. I wanted a shirt with some of the awesome female heroes in Marvel's universe, and I did spot a t-shirt similar to this:

But, otherwise? Ninety-five percent of the shirts for women and girls were some variation of "My boyfriend is a superhero" or "I only date superheroes."

Now, are those designs horrible? Not necessarily. What makes them icky is that they - they being Mighty Fine specifically and manufacturers at large - don't make similar shirts for boys that say "I only date superheroes" or "My girlfriend is a superhero." Likewise, they don't make "be a heroine" shirts for girls and Islands of Adventure doesn't stock many of the designs on men's tees in women's cuts. If I wanted to buy a Captain America shirt that was made to fit me on my visit to Islands of Adventure, I would have to picked the option that says "My boyfriend is a superhero." I have a crush on Captain America, I admit it - but I want more. I didn't have any options that allowed me to dress like Cap or embody the hero. Only options that said I had feelings for him. This t-shirt doesn't display the message I want.

And what message are these t-shirts sending? They're telling boys, hey, you're awesome - you can aspire to be the hero or dress like the hero. They're telling girls, hey, you need a hero. You should date a superhero and admire his abs and abilities. See the difference? Again, if they spread out the designs and offered spins for girls and boys, there wouldn't be so much of an issue. But they don't. For example, look at two designs released by Mighty Fine at the same time last year:
What the...??

I made a repeat visit to Islands of Adventure a few months ago, and these are some examples of t-shirts for girls and women that I spotted in shops at Marvel's Super Hero Island.

That wasn't all of them and again, 95% of the designs on t-shirts made for girls and women were in this vein. I mostly walked around the store making annoyed sounds every time I saw a different design. I just want more options for ladies and for dudes. Why can't it be equal? Come on, Islands of Adventure. Work with Mighty Fine and step up your game.

This Gender Bent Lara Croft Cosplayer Shows Off His Guns

by Geek Girl Diva
Tom Wright

Can I just say, I love when men put on the ridiculous costumes that women wear.

Obviously, women can wear whatever they want. But Lara Croft's creator was male, and messed up her breast-size with a simple mistake. He was told to leave it in. Ridiculous.

So when it's a male-dominated industry catering to the male gaze, I am definitely behind gender-bending from female-to-male. I think it shows a good perspective.

lara croft gender bent cosplay

We often see gender bending cosplay that bends male to female, but it’s a rarer thing to see men making the switch into a female cosplay.

However, Dr. Teng went all in on this Lara Croft cosplay.

Good on him. Now I kind of want to see his version of Starfire.

These beautiful watercolors each feature just a few key colors that manage to capture their superhero subjects perfectly. Artist Blule doesn’t leave hard, defined lines, but lets the colors bleed into each other and even splatter and drip on the page. It gives these innately complex characters a very simple and pure presentation. You can even choose your favorites from the collection and purchase them as prints to decorate your home.

The real villain of The Last Unicorn.

We all know that reindeer play games, but what about unicorns? They tried to play tag once, but it just ended in blood. Though they could alter the rules and only tag each other with their hooves, they’re too afraid to try after this incident. I don’t really blame them.

Solar Panels Could Replace Roads

by Hannah Weinberger
Tom Wright

Dan Wells shared this on Twitter, and I hope it works.

Also, I found out yesterday that you can rent goats to clear land. Unfortunately they don't have franchises in Texas yet. But still pretty cool.

Back when the concept of global warming was still nascent—only eight years ago, mind you—Scott and Julie Brusaw of Sagle, Idaho, began heavily contemplating an idea that Scott, an electrical engineer, had toyed with as a child: solar panel roads.

After years of figuring out many ways not to make a solar panel, the Brusaws have developed a modular-panel paving system that's attracted interest from the Federal Highway Administration, General Electric, and even Google. If their Indiegogo campaign, started this past Earth Day, receives $1 million by the end of May, the Brusaw's company, Solar Roadways, will be able to test its heavy-duty tempered-glass product in parking lots and eventually highways throughout the country.

The versatile paneling has a lot going for it. Where most roads ice over in the winter, solar roadways are equipped with heating elements that keep them clear. Where blacktop consumes light and requires bright headlights to navigate at night, solar roadways come outfitted with road-powered LEDs. Where potholes burden travelers for months, individual damaged panels can be fixed in a matter of minutes because nearby panels deliver automated alerts to electricians. They can even store and treat stormwater that erodes current byways and put an end to a Wi-Fi-less America.

Most impressive is Solar Roadways' energy and capital potential: The Brusaws did the math and found their panels more than pay for themselves. Solar panel technology is not cheap when done correctly, but Solar Roadways could conceivably produce more than three times the electricity Americans use each year.

That energy would power homes, roads, and as of today, even the White House. President Obama announced a plan to push solar energy in 2010 and is reinforcing his intent by symbolically reinstalling solar panels at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Use Star Wars Wax Seal Stamps to Send Your Letters with the Force

by Amy
Tom Wright

Almost makes sealing envelopes with wax worth it.

You never know what you'll find on Etsy when you're searching for Star Wars goodies. Sometimes it's household decor, sometimes it's kitschy jewelry, and sometimes you come across wax seal stamps featuring Star Wars symbols and you squee at your desk. I admit I don't send as many letters as I intend to, but I love the look and feel of wax seals. They make any note you write seem more official and important. I could just be sending a postcard with a silly quote to a friend, but if I put it in an envelope and seal it with wax, it magically transforms into a serious document.

Anyway. Etsy seller Back to Zero has the following stamps available: the Jedi symbol, the Rebel Alliance symbol, Darth Vader, R2-D2, stormtrooper, the Galactic Senate symbol, and the Imperial crest (which they're calling the Galactic Republic symbol, but we'll give them a pass). They look detailed and oh so pretty:

Shop for Star Wars wax seal stamps at Back to Zero's Etsy store. You can choose the color of the handle and whether you want to bundle the wax. And yes, you'll find other nerdy designs like a Batman wax seal stamp in the listings. Keep in mind that turnaround time is about four weeks; plan accordingly if you want to use these for invitations for an event.

Her Universe Has a Han Solo Dress and Many More New Items for Star Wars Weekends

by Amy
Tom Wright

Han Solo dress, pretty great.

Ashley Eckstein and Her Universe will be back at Star Wars Weekends at Disney's Hollywood Studios for another year. Yay! Besides hosting Behind the Force: Star Wars Rebels and the Padawan Mind Challenge, Ashley will be signing autographs and she's bringing tons of new Her Universe merchandise with her to Darth's Mall! There's a Han Solo dress! But I'm getting ahead of myself.

The star of the new products is a collection of high-end R2-D2 jewelry. Ashley worked with The Sparkle Factory to create the designer pieces featuring earrings, rings, bracelets, and more. All of the items are priced under $100, and they'll debut at Star Wars Weekends and be available on the Her Universe website starting May 19th. The R2-D2 jewelry is glittery and beautiful:

Besides items featuring your favorite astromech, Her Universe has several new t-shirts, dresses, and skirts. Creative designs include a Han Solo dress (!!), a Rebel Alliance skirt, a sleeveless Boba Fett hoodie, and Darth Vader and Stormtrooper leggings. I'm impressed by not only the designs for the Star Wars Weekends releases but the quantity. They've included pieces that are geek chic along with more everyday cosplay creations. Just look at all of them:

I clearly need to spend a weekend rearranging my closet just so I can make room for one of each of these dresses, skirts, and shirts.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries is the best adaptation of Pride & Prejudice

by Amy
Tom Wright

Amy Ratcliffe says this is the best adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

Is she right?

IS SHE?!

I heard about The Lizzie Bennet Diaries about a year and a half ago. I was intrigued by the thought of a modern adaptation Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice told through a web series and fascinated by all the buzz about how it leveraged transmedia storytelling. I kept meaning to watch it, but being the binge consumer that I am, I decided to wait until the story was finished.

When they launched a Kickstarter to bring the series to DVD, I backed it without a second thought. I had a hunch I would enjoy the series, I wanted to watch it straight through without dealing with YouTube, and I wanted to support friends who were part of the crew on the show. They experienced more than a few delays in getting the DVDs out to backers, but the package from Pemberley Digital arrived recently and I sat down to see what The Lizzie Bennet Diaries was all about. I inserted disc one, and my only movement for the next few hours was to change discs. I fell in love. Head over heels, swooning in love.

You can watch the first episode for a taste but don't blame me if you're sucked into a period drama shaped black hole:

I've watched more than a few versions of Pride & Prejudice. None have come close to moving the A&E adaptation starring Colin Firth out of first place until The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. The changes they made to the story to make it fit into our time and the way we use social media was clever, and I also appreciated the fact that they alter the story to make the Bennet sisters stronger and more independent but still fallible.

Besides the captivating writing and set-up, the casting is freaking perfect. Lizzie, Jane, Lydia, Darcy... ladies and gents, everyone is charming and they are all ideal in their roles.

I went into the series knowing very little about the specifics of how it was modernized, and I don't want to give anything away because I loved experiencing the story that way. And by experiencing I mean inhaling. I watched it all over the course of a few days. I giggled, chortled, and wept my way through The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and all the spinoff content (it was all lined up on the DVDs).

Getting to know this take on the Bennet sisters and the men and friends in their lives was utterly satisfying. As far as I'm concerned, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries is the best adaptation of Pride & Prejudice.
