If The Disney Princesses Were Piles Of Rocks

by Nicole Wakelin
Tom Wright

What if Disney princesses were just rocks?

What does any of this mean?

r1

Tired of Disney Princess art crossovers? Think they’ve all been done? Well, allow us to submit this series that explores how the Disney princesses would look as piles of rocks. It just might be the best mashup yet. It’s the work of artist Kevin Bolk who has stacked up all the rocks and given just enough adornment and background to identify each princess. Mostly, it’s just their hair, but Cinderella also gets her glass slipper.

See more examples after the break.

Stormtrooper Klingon Ballerinas: Fear Them [Cosplay]

by Amy Ratcliffe
Tom Wright

10/10 would wear this.

Stormtrooper Klingon Ballerinas

Take the attributes of Stomtroopers and Klingons then make them graceful and nimble. They’re the ultimate villains.

Indeed, there’s mash-up cosplay, and then there’s this combination of Star Trek, Star Wars, and ballet. I can tell the photo was taken at the Hyatt or the Marriott at Dragon Con, and that is exactly the sort of place you would see Klingon Stormtrooper ballerinas. I hope they have a choreographed routine.

Embrace Your Themyscira Heritage With A Wonder Woman Cosplay Hoodie

by Amy Ratcliffe
Tom Wright

I need one for a Tara Dactyl!

But where would the wings go? And is the hoodie fitted for the cranial bump out of the back of the head?

And I need the fabric tear-resistant. Tara Dactyl claws are a thing, you know?

14ff_wonder_woman_hoodie

Wonder Woman’s costume doesn’t look like the most comfortable piece of clothing in the world. But, you can look like her without wearing a leotard thanks to this Wonder Woman costume hoodie from ThinkGeek. It’s got the blue with white stars, the Wonder Woman emblem, and my favorite: a built-in tiara on the hood.

Check out more pics of the sweatshirt after the break.

Little Magneto Wins The Heart Of Texas Comic Con [Cosplay]

by Amy Ratcliffe
Tom Wright

She even has the tutu. So good.

magneto costume 1

It’s no secret that we love seeing kids in costume, and I about fell out of my chair when I saw a photo of this tutu-wearing Magneto from Heart of Texas Comic Con. Her name’s Monk, and her mom Christina said this costume was Monkneto for her. She even has a spoon that she controls with her mind in some of the photos. She completely owns it.

It looks like Monk attends several conventions, and her adventures are documented with the hashtag #haleycon on Instagram. Can I be her when I grow up?

See more Monkneto pics and a couple more examples of Monk’s costumes after the break.

Voldemort’s Costume Isn’t Good Enough For The Villain Pub [Video]

by Nicole Wakelin
Tom Wright

I love the How It Should Have Ended crew.

Trying to take over the world isn’t easy. At the end of the day, even villains need a place to relax, which is when they head over to the Villain Pub. Loki, Voldemort, Joker and all your evil faves are there, just waiting to mock each other for their fashion choices.

You Won’t Believe What This Guy Got For Free On Craigslist

by Nicole Wakelin
Tom Wright

I have put so many quarters into this game...

fYJaLnF

There is all sorts of stuff on Craigslist and sometimes it’s even free. In those cases, people generally want to clear out clutter—but this is just unreal. Apparently, this huge X-Men arcade cabinet was up for free and redditor Zappletree snagged it. We’re not sure if it works but, either way, it might be even cooler than this $8 Dalek dress one girl found recently at her local Goodwill.

Warner Bros. Is Working On A Supergirl Television Series With The Guy From “Arrow”

by Amy Ratcliffe
Tom Wright

This is great news.

Supergirl

Good news: Warner Bros. Television has tapped Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler to bring DC Comics’ Supergirl to television. The Hollywood Reporter says the duo is adapting the character for a potential new series, and they excpect Geoff Johns to have a role in developing it. No other information has been confirmed, not even the title or format.

Given the work Berlanti has already done with The CW’s Arrow, I think it’s definitely a good thing he’s involved, and I’d love to see a comic book series with a female lead head to television. I can’t wait to hear more.

LEGO Video Asks Han Solo, Peter Quill, And Mal Reynolds About When To Shoot First

by Amy Ratcliffe
Tom Wright

The pragmatic disposal of one's enemies.

always shoot first

If Peter Quill, Han Solo, and Malcolm Reynolds sat down at the cantina and had a chat, it seems reasonable that they would discuss when it’s okay to shoot first. This LEGO video from Brotherhood Workshop takes the characters from Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Wars, and Firefly and imagines how the conversation would go. Spoiler: it’s kinda fantastic.

Surprisingly funny.

Considering I lost it so hard at the 30 second mark that I had to use my inhaler to be able to breathe, I have nothing but “YES” to say about this new version of The Walking Dead – Bad Lip Reading.

If you haven’t seen the first one, make sure you watch that as well. As for this one, just make sure you’re not eating or drinking unless you want to have an accident.

Also, yeah, I bought Carl Poppa.

by Amy Ratcliffe

Don't buy the red one!

These A-line dresses capture everything I love about the design while looking very comfortable. They come in command red, science blue, and security gold. Klingons Aren’t Afraid To Dye [T-Shirt]

by Stefan A. Slater
Tom Wright

This makes a lot of sense to me.

I'd wear it.

klingon2 copy

Klingons look tough, and they’re all about war and stuff, but do you know what they like to do in their spare time? They love to tie-dye. Honestly, they do! They tie-dye shirts, or they tie-dye hankies and wrap them around their bat’leths–honestly, if you can tie-dye it, the Klingons have already probably done it. In fact, “Today is a good day to die” has been incorrectly translated. It’s actually properly translated as “Today is a good day to dye.” Got it?

Check out a close-up of the shirt after the break…

r/Fantasy Writer of The Day: Tom Wright

Tom Wright

I'm r/Fantasy's Writer of the Day! If you're on Reddit, check it out.

Hi r/Fantasy! After months of asking Writers of the Day about their favorite board games, sports, super heroes, etc., I figured I'd give it a go.

I'm Tom Wright, author of Apex Rising and co-author of Blood for Blood. I started writing after I tried to start a publishing company by hiring a ghostwriter. I wanted to build up a brand with a pen name, but ended up scrapping the ghostwriter idea and collaborating with the co-author instead. Once I wrote a little bit, I started writing every day and next thing you know, BAM, I have a book out. It's been non-stop ever since.

I also run /r/fantasyjeopardy. I put up answers during the week, and players submit their questions. It's a little different than the Jeopardy game show in that your answers are more detailed than my questions. It's a good time. I'd love to see more subscribers over there.

You'll like my books if you like action-packed movies. Sometimes I want to read something with a deeper moral message, and other times I just want to read crazy fight scenes with explosions. My writing is almost exclusively the latter. If that interests you, definitely check out my books.

Apex Rising is marked down to $.99 until the end of the week, and the first book of Blood for Blood is free.

I'm currently working on a sci-fi/action trilogy of novellas based in the dystopian future of Austin, TX. After that, I plan on a trilogy of novellas about dinosaur superheroes. Then probably back to the Apex Rising series.

Want to know more about me or my writing? Ask me anything. I'll be here throughout the day.

A Guy Game

by Pat
Tom Wright

Good old Pat Rothfuss.

Today Oot came up to me and asked me if I’d like to play a game.

“What kind of a game?” I asked him.

“Oh you know,” he explains, sounding very matter-of-fact. “A guy game. Because we’re both guys.”

20140922_162944

I hear this, and I sigh a little inside. We’ve tried really hard to keep the gender stereotype stuff away from him. I don’t want him to think that trucks are for boys and dolls are for girls. That boys are tough and girls are delicate. When I tell him stories, the heroes win because they’re clever instead of being strong, and sometimes it’s the prince that needs rescuing, not the princess.

But I can’t watch every piece of media before he does. Or every book before he reads it. Besides, this stuff is insidious. It’s everywhere. And I know that despite my best intentions I sometimes tend to reinforce stereotypes without meaning to.

It’s like trying to keep dust out of your house. You can do a lot, but ultimately, *you* are one of the main reasons there’s dust. You track it in on your clothes without knowing it. And even if you somehow managed to avoid that, you’d still shed skin cells. Even if you don’t want to. This constant, low-grade sexism is everywhere. It sneaks in.

But they can’t all be learning experiences. Sometimes you just want to play a game with your kid. Sometimes you watch The Princess Bride because you love it, and it’s a really great movie even though there is only one woman in it, and Buttercup is pretty much the epitome of a useless trophy damsel.

Sometimes you’re going to lose a little. That’s the way of things. It stings, but all I can do is try my best and hope he grows up having internalized less of this cultural bullshit than me. Then he won’t have to work so hard to be a halfway decent human being.

Then, years from now when he has kids, he can help them be even better than he is. And so on. I might lose a battle here and there, but I’m taking the long view. I’m aiming to win the war.

So it’s okay. We’ll play a guy game.

“What sort of guy game would you like to play?” I ask him.

“Well,” he says. “Maybe me and you could play a game where we make a house.”

I’m okay with that. It’s a good game. I did a lot of construction projects with my dad when I was little. At least it’s not killing-things game. It’s a making-things game. I’ll take what I can get.

So we go into the room and he explains the game to me. We’re dragons, and we’re making a house. In the house we’re going to make a nest. And in the nest we have some eggs. Our job is to take care of the eggs, keep them warm and safe until they hatch.

After they hatch, we’ll take care of the baby dragons. We’ll bring them food to eat and toys and soft things to cuddle up with.

You know. A guy game. Because we’re both guys.

Some days you lose despite your best efforts. Some days you win without even trying.

Be good everyone,

pat

A Lot Of Marvel Movies Are Kind Of The Same

Animated Superman #1

by Kerry Callen
Tom Wright

This artist's stuff is always the best.

Whenever I see Superman #1 from 1939, I remember how Superman could only jump in his first adventures, not fly. That's where we get the whole "able leap buildings in a single bound" thing. This cover would have had to been timed just right to get him in a cool looking pose!

I had the urge to animate it, so I did.

A split second later and the cover would have looked like this.

Scotsman Has A Fake “Ginger Discount Card” And It Actually Works

by Nicole Wakelin
Tom Wright

I'd totally use it.

ginger card

Scotsman Richard Macrae has brilliant red hair and his friends decided that it made him worthy of discounts at shops and restaurants. Since no such discount exists, they made up a Ginger Discount Card for his 30th birthday as a joke. Macrae gave it a go, and darned if it doesn’t work on occasion. He told The Scotsman:

“People have always given me stick for my hair colour but now I’m going out three nights a week and saving a fortune. The joke’s on them,”

Macrae said it doesn’t always work and that a lot of people get a good laugh, but it does work some of the time. He figures he’s already saved hundreds of pounds with the fake card.

Mega furniture store IKEA is a cosplayer friendly place. You can find cheap LEDs and miscellaneous items to use in costumes or simply peruse the vast number of storage options the store offers. Nail Polish That Detects Date Rape Drugs Is Being Developed

by Amy Ratcliffe
Tom Wright

This is amazing. I hope this works out and we see not only a drop off in date rape, but more perpetrators going to jail and getting off our streets and out of our schools and lives.

Undercover Colors logo

Date rape drugs are a problem faced by men and women all over. Detecting whether a drink has been doctored with drugs like Rohyphnol and GHB can be almost impossible, but one undergraduate team at North Carolina State University is working on a product that could help. Undercover Colors is a nail polish that changes color if it comes into contact with either of the two date rape drugs mentioned above. All you have to do to test a drink is dip a finger into the liquid. They’re currently in the research and development stage and accepting donations. From the Undercover Colors Facebook page:

In the U.S., 18% of women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. That’s almost one out of every five women in our country. We may not know who they are, but these women are not faceless. They are our daughters, they are our girlfriends, and they are our friends.

While date rape drugs are often used to facilitate sexual assault, very little science exists for their detection. Our goal is to invent technologies that empower women to protect themselves from this heinous and quietly pervasive crime.

For our first product, we are developing a nail polish that changes color when it comes in contact with date rape drugs such as Rohypnol, Xanax, and GHB. With our nail polish, any woman will be empowered to discreetly ensure her safety by simply stirring her drink with her finger. If her nail polish changes color, she’ll know that something is wrong.

Through this nail polish and similar technologies, we hope to make potential perpetrators afraid to spike a woman’s drink because there’s now a risk that they can get caught. In effect, we want to shift the fear from the victims to the perpetrators. We are Undercover Colors and we are the first fashion company empowering women to prevent sexual assault.

I hope they get funded and gain wide distribution. Ideally, I’d love to see a product like this stocked at bars and made available for free to anyone who wants to use it.

If you're on Reddit, I'd love an upvote...

I just released [Blood for Blood: The Vengeance War](http://www.amazon.com/Blood-The-Vengeance-War-ebook/dp/B00NF0M4KQ) last week. The first part (~150 pages) is [free at this link](http://www.amazon.com/Stolen-Prince-Blood-Book-ebook/dp/B00NES9OO8/). I'm very pleased with the cover art. I worked with the same illustrator who did my cover for [Apex Rising](http://www.amazon.com/Apex-Rising-Talker-Book-1-ebook/dp/B00KXEV52U), and she knocked it out of the park again. Blood for Blood is a collaboration between me (Tom Wright) and K.L. Gee. We had a good time writing it. It's an action-adventure fantasy, and I think you'll like it.

by Nicole Wakelin

It’s hard to hide one of those little square engagement ring boxes, so Andrew Zo has designed a case that holds a ring and is no thicker than your average wallet. It’s just 1 cm thick and holds the ring flat inside until it’s opened, unfolding like origami to present the ring on a little stand at just the right moment. They’re currently swamped with orders, but you can sign up for their mailing list and be notified when the case is back in stock.
