Barbie's Ken is now sporting a manbun

by Rusty Blazenhoff

Earlier today, Mattel announced its brand new line of Fashionistas Barbie and Ken dolls. These 40 new dolls come in a variety of body sizes (which now includes Ken's "slim," and "broad" figure), as well as a bunch of different skintones, hair colors and hairstyles. The most notable hairstyle, in my opinion, is Ken's MANBUN.

Yep, Barbie's boyfriend (they are dating, right?) is finally sporting last summer's hottest hairstyle.

Don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger.

CEO Travis Kalanick forced out at Uber

by Rob Beschizza

What was last week posed as an indefinite leave of absence is now for good: Travis Kalanick, CEO of scandal-wracked rideshare company Uber, announced that he is leaving the company.

“I love Uber more than anything in the world and at this difficult moment in my personal life I have accepted the investors request to step aside so that Uber can go back to building rather than be distracted with another fight,” Kalanick said in a statement...

Mr. Kalanick’s exit came under pressure after hours of drama involving Uber’s investors, according to two people with knowledge of the situation, who asked to remain anonymous because the details were confidential.

Earlier on Tuesday, five of Uber’s major investors demanded that the chief executive resign immediately. The investors included one of Uber’s biggest shareholders, the venture capital firm Benchmark, which has one of its partners, Bill Gurley, on Uber’s board. The investors made their demand for Mr. Kalanick to step down in a letter delivered to the chief executive while he was in Chicago, said the people with knowledge of the situation.

Uber is not only a terrible company operated by sociopathic criminals, it's a sham desperately searching for a real business model to profit from.

Now, the company aims to make it quicker and easier to transfer funds to bank accounts.

MrMobile's OnePlus 5 video review

by MrMobile

Almost a year ago to the day, I kicked off the MrMobile YouTube channel with a review of the OnePlus 3 – so it seems fitting that MrMobile's one-year anniversary lands alongside the debut of the next phone in the family formerly known as "flagship killers."

Like its immediate predecessor the OnePlus 3T, the OnePlus 5 is better described as a killer flagship, with top-of-the-line specs packed into a very affordable package. That's OnePlus's game, after all, and the company plays it well. But does its focus on camera quality justify the slightly higher price tag – and will you be able to tell it apart from your friends' iPhones? Hit up MrMobile's OnePlus 5 review to find out, and then hop on over to Android Central's full OnePlus 5 review to learn what it really means to "never settle."

Rare video of a white owl swimming through a canyon

by Rusty Blazenhoff

Here's something you don't see every day, a swimming owl.

In late 2016 Derrick Zuk and some pals were hiking through a canyon in Lake Powell (between Utah and Arizona) and discovered this great horned owl as it started swimming in the water. Zuk waded behind the white bird to capture this rare footage.

While it looks rather beautiful, National Geographic reports that this behavior is a "last resort" for the bird:

In an email with National Geographic, Geoff LeBaron, the Christmas bird count director at the National Audubon Society, noted that the owl—which still has some of its nestling feathers—is likely a young great horned owl that has only just begun to explore the world beyond its nest.

"I suspect it actually fell out of the nest," said LeBaron. "In the West especially, great horned [owls] do nest on ledges on cliffs, often in raven or other birds' nests that they take over." He suspects the young owl could have also fallen out of its nest or faltered during an early test flight.

"This bird is young enough that the parents were probably still caring for it, so hopefully once the folks go by, the bird dried off and its parents found it," LeBaron offered.

The OnePlus 5 brings modest improvements to the best deal in smartphones

by Brian Heater
The OnePlus 5 is a modest upgrade over its predecessor — the company isn’t making any bones about it. It’s slimmer than the 3T, there’s a dual-lens camera on on the back, the latest Qualcomm processor inside (Snapdragon 835) and some decent — but not groundbreaking — software tweaks. There are no signs of a company really trying to break out from the pack in… Read More

This little library in Detroit looks like Doctor Who's TARDIS

by Rusty Blazenhoff

We have little free libraries where I live in California but none as are half as cool as this one in Detroit, Michigan. Dan Zemke spotted an empty lot across the street from his house on Detroit's Warren Ave. and thought it needed something. He decided it would be the perfect spot for a life-size replica of a TARDIS that would double as a little library.

Unlike the fictional TARDIS, Zemke’s creation is not bigger on the inside, but does have room for around 140 books that he hopes people will circulate and replace as they trade them out. Where the original TARDIS has signs around the top saying, “Police Box,” this one has signs saying, “Take A Book, Leave A Book.” Other than that, it is a spitting image of the iconic BBC ship.

(One might argue that it IS bigger on the inside because of the knowledge within its books.)

This is the OnePlus 5

by Harish Jonnalagadda

OnePlus starts airing the first OnePlus 5 promo in India — giving us a look at the full device, front and back.

OnePlus showed off a teaser of the OnePlus 5 earlier this month, giving us a look at the dual rear cameras and an early look at the design on offer. We've received other leaks since then, and today the company is showing off the device in its entirety in its first official TV spot.

Airing in India during the finals of the ICC Champions Trophy cricket tournament, the ad features OnePlus India brand ambassador and Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan unboxing what looks to be a OnePlus 5, with an official render of the device itself showcased at the end.

OnePlus 5 ad

The phone lines up with previous leaks, showing off a design with curved sides, dual cameras at the back, antenna lines at the top and bottom edges, front fingerprint sensor, and an understated aesthetic that looks great in black. The OnePlus 5 will likely be sold in four color options, and is confirmed to run the Snapdragon 835.

With millions of people around India tuning in to watch the game, OnePlus picked the right time to air the commercial. In a country obsessed with cricket, there isn't a match that has the same allure as a final where India is playing Pakistan. And that's exactly what's happening today at the Kennington Oval in London.

The OnePlus 5 is slated for an official unveiling on June 20, and will be launching in India on June 22, where OnePlus is hosting a major launch event.

Best Android Phone Under $400

by Daniel Bader

Best overall

Moto X4

See at Motorola

The Moto X4 is the long-awaited sequel to the Moto X Pure Edition, and at $399.99, it's the best phone you can buy under $400. It has a striking design, clean software, a great display, and a pretty good pair of cameras on the back. It's also one of the few phones in its price range with an IP68 rating.

Bottom line: If you're buying an unlocked phone and have a $400 budget, the Moto X4 is your best bet right now.

One more thing: The model made for Project Fi is the only Moto X4 with Android One, and the only model that's guaranteed to receive updates for at least two years. Given Motorola's poor track record with updates, this is the one we'd recommend buying, though the experience is otherwise nearly identical on both versions.

Why the Moto X4 is the best

The phone to get if you want bang for your buck.

The design of the Moto X4 is just as nice to hold as it is to look at, thanks to its gentle curves, and it's relatively durable with IP68 water and dust resistance. The software is as close as it gets to stock Android without bearing the Pixel brand (even more so with the Android One variant on Google Fi), but you still get all of Motorola's useful motion gestures for quickly launching functions like the camera and flashlight.

You won't get support for Motorola's extensive collection of Moto Mods like on the Z2 Play, nor is the battery life from its 3000 mAh cell the best we've seen. But the display is terrific, performance with its Snapdragon 630 chipset is smooth and speedy, and its dual cameras can take some really great photos.

Best for Europe

HTC U11 Life (Android One)

See at HTC

If looks are a priority for you, the U11 Life is a great way to get the eye-catching style of HTC's U11 flagship at about half the price. All it's missing is that stunning Solar Red finish — or better yet, the translucent look on the new U11+.

The HTC U11 Life is available for $300 from T-Mobile in the U.S., but the model we recommend is the $349 Android One variant you'll find globally. In our review, we found performance on the Sense version to be slower and less consistent than its specs (Snapdragon 630, 3GB RAM) are capable of, and just like with the Moto X4, only the U11 Life running Android One is guaranteed to receive at least two years' worth of software updates.

With either model, the U11 Life has some pretty compelling features: IP67 water resistance, a fast fingerprint sensor, HTC's Edge Sense squeeze functionality, and even a pair of active noise-canceling USB-C headphones included in the box.

Bottom line: If you want flagship style on a budget and don't mind losing the headphone jack (or living the dongle life), the U11 Life is a great option.

One more thing: Android One is the only software shipping on global units, so if you do want to use the U11 Life with Sense, you'll need to buy it from T-Mobile in the U.S.

Best audio experience

ZTE Axon 7

See at Amazon

You might have forgotten that ZTE is a major player in the U.S. smartphone wars, but that's okay. The good news is that the company is the brains behind the very impressive Axon line and the Axon 7 is a worthwhile choice if you don't mind dealing with a clunky Android interface.

The ZTE Axon 7 offers a 5.5-inch Quad HD AMOLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 3250mAh battery. It also has a 20-megapixel rear-facing camera, though it's not the best shooter in low light environments. But if you're an audiophile, the Axon 7 might make your ears perk up.

Bottom line: If you're tired of the same old smartphone brands in your life, the ZTE Axon 7 might be that "something new" that becomes your "something constant."

One more thing: The Axon 7 is over a year old, so if you're considering it today, you will likely have to settle for slow security updates and no more platform updates.

Best for even less

Moto G5 Plus

See at Amazon

The Moto G5 Plus is a wonder of cost-cutting in the right places. For either $229.99 (2GB RAM/32GB storage) or $299.99 (4GB/64GB) you get one of the most well-rounded budget phones out there. Featuring an excellent 5.2-inch display, a great 12MP rear camera, and awesome software touches, the Moto G5 Plus is truly a remarkable achievement.

Bottom line: You can't go wrong with the Moto G5 Plus, one of the best budget smartphones available right now.

One more thing: The Moto G5 Plus has a smaller, cheaper sibling in the Moto G5, but it's not officially available in the U.S.

Conclusion

The sub-$400 market is both extremely competitive and a little confusing, but there's never been more great options readily available, and with the emergence of Android One, you can finally count of getting consistent updates without having to buy a flagship phone straight from Google. The Moto X4 and U11 Life are both great examples of attractive, affordable phones with premium features like water resistance and fast fingerprint sensors. At the same time, devices like the Axon 7 continue to offer tremendous value for the money, while the newer Moto G5 Plus redefines what it means to be a top-tier budget device.

Best overall

Moto X4

Update, November 2017: The Moto X4 is our new best phone under $400, while the U11 Life with Android One has become our top recommendation for European shoppers.

Listen to the nicest car horn ever

by Rusty Blazenhoff

Former NASA engineer Mark Rober has invented a fancy in-dash car horn with three custom settings. The first one is sort of a swift and friendly 'toot, toot' for when your regular horn is too aggressive. The other two? Well, I won't spoil it but one is even friendlier than the first and the other is meant to get some real attention in "extreme situations."

Mark says, "This horn is SO courteous my car was granted Canadian citizenship yesterday."

Locked phones and unlocking fees will be banned in Canada starting December 1st

by Richard Gao

Here in the US, unlocking policies are pretty lackluster. Sure, they've improved over time, but these regulations still aren't something we can be proud of. But up in the Great White North, the CRTC (Canada's telecom commission) is hard at work. Starting on December 1st, 2017, all mobile devices will have the capability of being unlocked for free, and all new devices will be unlocked out of the box.

Getting a phone unlocked is still pretty complex stateside.

Watch: Guy drives his smart car inside convenience store to avoid rain

by Carla Sinclair

This guy has a lot of nerve. Not only does he drive his Smart car right into a convenience store in Jiangsu, China, but then he honks to get the cashier's attention. The cashier is a good sport, hopping to attention and actually bringing yogurt and a bag of chips to the guy's window, as if it's a drive-thru. He then takes some cash and helps guide the driver out of the store. Can you imagine what a ruckus this would have caused had this happened at a 7-11 in the US?

Using Alexa Scenes to control your home like magic

by Russell Holly

How do I use Alexa Scenes?

Most connected home gadgets have a way to do things automatically or based on specific conditions. That's the whole appeal after all: being able to automate parts of your life. That might be changing the color temperature in your living room when it's time to watch a movie or maybe just making sure the cable box is set to a specific channel when you turn on your television. Either way, Amazon collects these little scripted behaviors and puts them in a voice-controlled system called Scenes. Here's how it works.

Discovering your Scenes

Amazon's Scene tab isn't for creating; it's for collecting. If you have a Logitech Harmony set up to control you TV, those instructions can be added to a collection. If you have a thermostat and lights working together to change your environment in specific conditions, that gets added to the collection.

It's basically anything that isn't automated but still part of the system. Instead of going to those individual apps to activate these scripts, Alexa gathers them up and lets you activate them with your voice.

How to discover Scenes

  1. Open your Alexa App.
  2. Tap on the Menu button.
  3. Tap Smart Home in the Menu.
  4. Tap Scenes.
  5. Tap Discover.

Alexa will now scan your local wireless network for any tech with a Scene to be collected. If you have a Philips Hue set, you'll need to press the sync button on the Hue Hub to give Alexa access to those scenes.

How to use Alexa Scenes

In your Scene list, you'll see everything you've set up for light bulbs, fans, thermostats, and other smart home things that can be on or off with a simple command. The Scene has a name, and if you say that name to Alexa, it will execute the series of commands in the Scene.

For example, if you have a Philips Hue Scene named "Bedtime" that slowly lowers the brightness when you give the command, you can say "Alexa, turn on Bedtime," and the Scene will start. If you have scenes that work in multiple rooms, adjust the command to include the name of the room after and it will work.

Questions or comments?

Do you have an Alexa Scene you rely on every day? Share your favorites in the comments!
