OnePlus 3/3T get an updated launcher with dynamic icons in latest open beta

by Harish Jonnalagadda

OnePlus continues to improve OxygenOS with a host of new feature additions.

The OxygenOS open beta 10 is now rolling out to the OnePlus 3T (open beta 19 for the OnePlus 3), offering a slew of new features. The OnePlus Launcher has picked up an update to version 2.1, adding support for dynamic icons for the weather and calendar apps, along with controls for home screen grid and custom customizations. The app drawer now stores a history of your five most-recently used apps, and newly installed apps will be denoted by a blue dot.

You'll be able to see the battery status of connected Bluetooth devices, and add links to email addresses in texts. Animations for incoming calls have also been redesigned. Here's a breakdown of all the changes in the new OxygenOS open beta build:

All new OnePlus Launcher v2.1:

  • Supports dynamic icons for Weather and Calendar
  • Added 'Home screen layout' under launcher settings for grid and icon customizations
  • Grid layout will be kept irrespective of display size changes
  • Added search history records in app drawer, displaying the 5 most recent apps on the first row
  • Newly installed apps will now be tagged with a blue dot for easier recognition
  • You can access icon pack resources on the Play store directly under launcher settings
  • User interface improvements during widget selection
  • Launcher version information is now visible under launcher settings

Other additions:

  • Added an option to display battery status of connected Bluetooth devices
  • Added OnePlus widget (Not usable on Shelf)
  • Email address recognition within the text message contents
  • Size of clock widget is now adjustable
  • Updated UI style for Clock

Optimizations:

  • Smart Callback works better
  • Incoming call animations redesigned
  • OnePlus font optimizations for select languages
  • Compatibility optimizations for various Bluetooth devices

If you flash a beta build, you'll continue to receive updates for upcoming beta releases, but not stable builds. You'll have to switch back to the stable channel to pick up stable OTA updates. Head to OnePlus' downloads page to try out the latest beta for the OnePlus 3/3T. The new features should make their way to the stable channel shortly.

It's official: Galaxy Note 7 is coming back as the Galaxy Note Fan Edition on July 7

by Harish Jonnalagadda

Samsung will kick off sales of the Galaxy Note Fan Edition in South Korea on July 7.

Samsung said earlier this year that it will introduce a refurbished variant of the Galaxy Note 7, and we now have more details on the device. The phone is called the Galaxy Note Fan Edition, and it will go on sale in South Korea on July 7.

Samsung is planning to sell just 400,000 units of the device in its home market, with a retail price of 699,000 won ($611). That's 40% less than what the Note 7 retailed for last year. Samsung says that the Galaxy Note Fan Edition is made of "unopened" and "unused" Note 7 parts, with the company reusing the components from the Note 7 to minimize "environmental impact" from having to dispose of 3.5 million devices.

The design of the phone is identical to last year's flagship with a few tweaks — there's no Samsung branding up front, but there's a Galaxy Note Fan Edition logo at the back. The phone now has a 3200mAh battery, and Samsung says it put the battery through its new 8-point battery safety check to make sure it doesn't overheat.

Like the Note 7, the Galaxy Note Fan Edition is IP68 dust and water resistant, and the S Pen is also back. The phone is available in the same color variants as the Note 7 — Blue Coral, Gold Platinum, Silver Titanium, and Black Onyx.

The rest of the hardware is likely unchanged from the Note 7, but as of now, there's no mention of the exact specifications. What we do know is that the Galaxy Note Fan Edition offers the same software experience as the Galaxy S8 and S8+, including a few Bixby features like Bixby Home and Bixby Reminders. Thankfully, there isn't a dedicated hardware button to invoke Bixby.

Right now, there's no mention of whether the Galaxy Note Fan Edition will be sold in other territories. Would you be interested in picking up the phone if it launched in your country?

Watch this mama bear carry her cubs across a river on her back

by David Pescovitz

David Roseman, an employee at Alaska's Wood Tikchick State Park, spotted this big bear carrying her cubs across the river on her back. Sweet video below. From National Geographic:

Wayne Kasworm, a grizzly bear biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, explained that bears' high fat content and oily coat helps them easily stay afloat. The bears, which he estimates to be about six months old, will likely start to swim on their own once they reach 30 pounds.

Stray dog joins orchestra on stage during a live performance

by Rusty Blazenhoff

While the Vienna Chamber Orchestra performed at an outdoor theatre in Çesme, Turkey recently, a stray Labrador wandered onstage and plopped right down. His surprise appearance garnered a bunch of applause and laughter from the audience but the musicians just kept doing their thing. The dog settled in quietly, right up front, as the orchestra started in on "Mendelssohn’s 'Italian' Symphony No.4." It couldn't have been scripted any better.

After 28 years, Sony resumes vinyl record production

by Rob Beschizza

Sony last pressed a vinyl record in 1989. And it'll be pressing them again by March 2018, reports The BBC, proof of the mainstream return of the ancient format—once again a billion-dollar business.

Folks always argue about quality (will mainstream product mean mainstream mastering?) but the reasons for vinyl's resurgence are complex. It's a nice thing to own, it's a pleasing retail experience, it's nostalgic, it's a better gift, it's big enough to hang on a wall, you can fend off zombies with it, and so on.

There are seriously lame aspects to vinyl, though: quality deteriorates with use; easily damaged even when stored; no metadata; no controls; fiddly hardware. So whenever I read a "vinyl returns" article I dream of a new HD physical media format that's backward compatible with it. An LP-sized optical disk with the grooves on a clear laminate layer, perhaps. Or maybe a vinyl with a hidden flash storage layer within and exposed metal rings to read it with near the spindle. Or some kind of bad-ass sharpened metal disk played the old-fashioned way but at nyquist-busting RPM.

Michael Bond, creator of Paddington Bear, dies at 91

by Rob Beschizza

Michael Bond, 91, died after a short illness at his home in Britain, reports his publisher Harper Collins. He was the creator of Peruvian immigrant Paddington Bear, beloved the world over in books, television and movies. Bond was described as "kindly, dignified and charming" by friend and fan Stephen Fry, traits to be found in abundance throughout an artistic life detailed in the BBC's obituary:

The seeds of the idea had taken root during the war when Bond saw newsreels of children being sent out from British cities to avoid German bombing. "I had memories of children being evacuated from London with a label around their necks and all their possessions in a suitcase, and this became part of Paddington as well," he said. "Paddington Bear was a refugee with a label - 'Please look after this bear. Thank you', and he had a little suitcase."

Happy happy birthday: Google+ turns six years old today

by Corbin Davenport

Six years is a long time, especially in the technology world. When Google+ was launched on this day in 2011, the Nexus S was still pretty new, Google Reader was still around (RIP), and we were mourning the loss of Google Buzz. Here we are, six years later, and the site is still kicking - though perhaps to a lesser extent than Google initially hoped for.

For most people, Google+ is that service that you only signed up for to leave a comment on YouTube.
