You can now pair your Google Home to other Bluetooth speakers

by Joe Maring

Your $49 Home Mini just got a lot more powerful.

When Google released the Home Mini, it received a lot of criticism for not including a 3.5mm headphone jack so you could connect it to another, more powerful speaker. This is one big advantage the Echo Dot has over the Home Mini, but that conversation is now changing with the ability to stream audio from Google Homes to Bluetooth speakers.

Prior to this update, users have only been able to send audio to Home speakers using Bluetooth on phones. However, with today's update, you can now send audio from Home devices to other Bluetooth-enabled speakers.

To get started, simply go the device settings in the Home app and follow the instructions for pairing your Bluetooth speakers to your Google Home. Once this is done, you can either have your Bluetooth speaker replace audio output from your Google Home or add it to an audio group and quickly get multi-room audio.

You'll still need to talk to your Home speaker to perform voice commands, but even so, this is a great feature to have. I imagine most people will use this with the Home Mini, but it also works on the regular Home and Home Max.

Paul is a VERY good pig. Watch as, at his owner's behest, he cleans the heck out of his belongings, putting them back in his toy box, where they belong. I'd give so much if I could teach my dog to do this.

London police finally admit they fed intel to UK construction cartel to build illegal blacklist of labour organisers

It's been six years since investigative journalists published their expose accusing London's Metropolitan Police of colluding with the UK's construction cartel to blacklist workers who complained about unsafe working conditions, abusive bosses and wage-theft, as well as union organisers and other "troublemakers" -- this week, the Met confirmed that its officers were an active part of the illegal blacklist. More than a decade's worth of Facebook catastrophes

by Cory Doctorow

In the wake of the latest Facebook data breach catastrophe, Josh Constantine rounds up more than a decade's worth of major catastrophes wrought by Facebook's recklessness, greed, and foolishness, from Beacon to the "Engagement Ranked Feed" to the "Engagement Priced Ad Auctions" to the choices that created spamming games like Zynga's offerings, to the mass overwriting of privacy preferences, to "ethnic affinity" ad targeting, to the Real Names policy and the stalkers it abetted to Facebook's global anti-Net-Neutrality campaigns; to self-serve ads; to developer data access and the gift it handed to crooks like Cambridge Analytica. This Great Pyrenees does not care it is at a dog show

by Jason Weisberger

Great Pyrenees like to think for themselves, and don't much care what you want them to do.

I took my buddy Nemo to agility training. He can do all the tricks. He will not do any of them once he has had enough treats. Simple things like sit, down or stay all come instantly, when he wants the treats I'm holding. Any other time, unless I have real urgency in my voice, Nemo feels I'm presenting options. Sit generally results in lay down. Stay is often "wander off and lay down over there."

This Pyr has a blast just knocking the crap out of that obstacle course.

Fall in love with Florence, our game of the week!

by Marc Lagace

Who says video games can't be considered works of art?

March 16, 2018: We've got a couple beautifully artful games to recommend this week. First, explore the highs and lows of falling in love with Florence, and then run from a gigantic world-eating worm in the hand-drawn Wormster Dash!

Florence

Who says that video games can't be artistic? Florence is a brand new game released for Android and iOS designed by the Ken Wong, the lead designer of the incredible Monument Valley franchise who now leads a new indie studio, Mountains, based out of Australia. Florence is their first release and it is mesmerizing.

The game explores the titular character, Florence, as she falls in love for the first time. The interactive elements at play here are subtle at times, but it all manages to pull you into Florence's day-to-day life. The game tracks the highs and lows of falling in love with an art style that will remind you of reading a graphic novel. It shouldn't take you too long to play through Florence, but it's a quality experience and should touch your heart.

Download: Florence ($2.99)

Wormster Dash

What can you do when a giant worm is trying to eat the entire world around you? Run for your life!

That's the premise behind the beautifully hand-drawn game Wormster Dash. The graphics in this game were all hand drawn on paper, giving this game a look and feel that you just don't see too often on mobile. This game is loaded with hidden passages, deadly traps, and a bunch of bizarre creatures that will try to distract you as you jump and smash past obstacles.

Officially listed as unreleased on the Google Play Store, if you're brave enough you can download and play it today from the Google Play Store.

Classy sofas for cats

by Rusty Blazenhoff

This luxurious upholstered cat sofa by FelinEva is certainly a favorite of the French maid in the video. Watch her fondle it gently, quietly, as if she herself was a cat, a cat in fishnet stockings.

Will actual cats be as enamored? There's no real way to know until it's in your living room, right? I'd guess my cat would quickly inspect it and then promptly ignore it, because cat.

No mention of the sofa's cost on the website but we have to imagine it's going to set you back a pretty penny.

"Would you rather be a cat sofa?"

Now, if you're in the market for a cat sofa but are looking for something a bit more economical (and less over-the-top), check out the Paws & Purrs sofa bed for cats (and other small to medium pets). It's about $102.

“Pup View” from the home of Japan’s adorable Akita dogs

by Yukiko Naganuma

Akita dogs, which hail from the snowy mountainous region in the north of Japan, are big, fluffy, and incredibly loyal. What better way to start off the Year of the Dog than with a visit to the home of these lovable pooches in Ōdate city. Now, Street View can take you there in an instant.

Meet “Ako”, “Asuka” and “Puuko”, Ōdate city’s Street View dog helpers...

Akita dogs are a big part of life in Ōdate city. So to give visitors a snapshot of the local area, residents called on the help of a hardy trio of Akita dogs—Ako, Asuka and Puuko—to give their unique perspective of a dog’s life in Akita. With a small camera attached to a dog-friendly harness on their backs, the dogs set out to collect their very ownStreet ViewPup-View of their home city. Here are some highlights:

  • Dog 1
In this photo, Ako stares at a statue of Hachi, a dog-turned-legend who dutifully went to Tokyo’s Shibuya station every day to meet his owner, years after the owner passed away.
  • Dog 2
Here Ako had a great time playing in this field during a snowy walk. When the snow clears, rice is grown here.
  • Dog 3
The Rouken “old dog” shrine in the middle of the forest, one of the very few shrines actually dedicated to a dog.

There’s much more to sniff out in Ōdate, from hot springs, history, culture, and cuisine, so come on in and dig around the new imagery!

Clocks in Europe running six minutes slow because of a power-grid dispute

by Clive Thompson

This is fascinating: Millions of clocks across Europe have lost time, because of a dispute over electricity generation.

Citizens across Europe had been noticing that clocks in certain devices -- LED-style alarm clocks, stoves, and microwaves -- had been gradually losing time over the last few weeks. Why? Because those devices keep time based on the frequency of the European electrical grid, which is normally 50 hertz.

But in the past few weeks, the frequency of the grid has dropped slightly -- it's down to 49.996 hertz. So all those clocks have gradually run more and more slowly. People had noticed ... https://twitter.com/allan_howe/status/971418087366037504

Okay, so ... why has the grid's frequency dropped? As NPR explains, it's because of a political fight:

The problem, affecting some two dozen countries from Spain to Turkey, originates from a political disagreement between Kosovo and Serbia, ENTSO-E said.

Reuters reports Kosovo was using more power than it generated and Serbia, responsible for righting an imbalance, failed to do so, resulting in the deviation.

Tensions have been rising between the two for some time. Kosovo broke away from Serbia in 2008 after the brutal war of the 1990s, but Belgrade still does not recognize Kosovo's independence. And Reuters reports that while Serbia and Kosovo agreed to jointly operate a power grid in 2015, disagreements over distribution have stalled implementation of the deal.

ENTSO-E spokeswoman Susanne Nies told NPR on Wednesday that Kosovo began producing enough power for its population on Tuesday, thus stopping the deviation. However, she said, "It will take some time for the Continental European power system to get back into the normal frequency" and the approximately six-minute lag remained in effect.

À la recherche du temps perdu.

Me, I had no idea there were clocks that synchronized themselves based on the power grid. That sounds ... nuts! Particularly since quartz technology is super accurate and dirt-cheap. But I suspect it's because it's impractical to run a battery-powered quartz timekeeper inside an appliance like a stove or a microwave, where it'd be a pain in the butt to change the battery every two years or so?

(Thanks to Debbie Chachra for this one!)

New 'mass-appeal' Fitbit watch to be called Versa

by Richard Gao

Last week Wareable revealed photos and details of an upcoming Fitbit smartwatch. The wearable company, on its latest earnings call, had claimed that this future watch would have "mass appeal." According to famed leakster Evan Blass, this watch will reportedly be dubbed 'Versa,' just like Nissan's cheap little subcompact car.

The Versa, which was thought to be a successor to the Fitbit Blaze, is said to run the same Fitbit OS software that we first saw on the Ionic.
