Google Maps v9.38 adds a dedicated album for food photos and an upcoming events tab for your places [APK Download]

by Cody Toombs

maps

Google set loose a new beta release of Maps, taking it up to v9.38. This release doesn't seem to have quite as many huge features as some of the last few, but there are still a couple of cool additions. There's a new tab with a list of upcoming events, bookings, and reservations. The dedicated album for food photos from a recent teardown is now also live. There are almost always a few other hidden gems in each release, so keep an eye out for more changes and let us know if you see anything else.

The Coloring Book for Goths: The World's Most Depressing Book
by Tom Devonald

I wasn't a big fan of high school, and my high school wasn't a big fan of me. Weird, awkward, and music-obsessed, I was a concert-tee-clad speck in a sea of polo shirts and boat shoes. My 30th high school reunion was last July. A friend of mine from high school, who has a sadistic sense of humor, added me to the reunion Facebook page. One of the organizers for the event asked the group what songs they wanted to hear at the reunion. They all commented with one singular word, "Eighties." The organizer tried their best to be diplomatic, and calmly asked which particular songs they wanted to hear, which then prompted the response of, "Eighties." This went on for a while. Finally, someone commented with Starship's "We Built This City."

Needless to say, I didn't attend the reunion. I try my best to avoid situations where I might accidentally hear one note of Starship's "We Built This City." In a strange coincidence, some of my friends who didn't attend my high school organized a gothic/punk/industrial 'club kid' reunion the weekend prior to my high school reunion. During the early-to-mid '80s, the midwestern city I lived in had a great alternative music club scene. We would spend most of our evenings dressed in black and coiffed outrageously, dancing to Bauhaus' seminal track "Bela Lugosi is Dead," Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart," amongst other doomy, angsty, deep cuts and non-hits. Going back to my hometown and dancing with old friends to great music was one of the highlights of 2015. Yes, I dressed in black.

Well, let's segue into the review. The Coloring Book For Goths is a humorous coloring book requiring only one color: black. Geared to the current coloring book fad, it has one joke. Once you color it in, the page turns completely, thoroughly black. Featuring crows, black widow spiders, pentagrams, coffins, and crypts, and making references to Edgar Allen Poe, Robert Smith, and Friedrich Nietzsche, the book often only makes a passing reference to the goth subculture.

Some pages are funny and clever – a page of Metallica lyrics, pages exploring oblivion, the unknown, and the unknowable – but there are just as many embarrassing pages that belie a rudimentary understanding of the culture. An insecure killer whale? A polar bear in witness protection? Embarrassing tattoos? Unfortunately, someone enveloped in the goth culture would probably never purchase this book, and tourists to the culture probably won't come away with a better understanding of it. It both embraces and pokes fun at the culture. Still, it was cute and made me snicker, because while we may have a serious demeanor, goths (and former goths) can take a joke. – S. Deathrage

OnePlus and O2 agree on exclusive partnership in the UK

by Vlad Savov

Other than Apple and Samsung, no phone maker has stirred as much attention and excitement as the young OnePlus. Established as an offshoot of Oppo at the end of 2013, OnePlus began life as a direct-to-consumer online retailer with the immodest product tagline of "flagship killer" for its initial OnePlus One and 2 devices. Now a little wiser and older, the company has reined in its marketing and it’s starting to diversify its mode of distribution, announcing today an exclusive partnership with O2 in the UK.

Having once been available only via an arcane invitation system, OnePlus’ smartphones will now be ranged across O2’s UK stores, which will serve as a platform to expanding awareness of the brand and building it up through...

On its 18th birthday, Google is more indispensable than ever

by Vlad Savov

I’ve been thinking lately about how easy it is to live without Apple products. Sure, they’re the best in the world in each category Apple competes in, but unless you’re already locked into the Cupertino ecosystem, they’re honestly optional technology. You can listen to music on the move, play movies in bed, take your office on the road with you, and concentrate your entire life into a smartphone all without an iPod, iPad, MacBook, or iPhone. There are alternatives. Not so with Google.

In its 18 years of existence, Google has grown from the world’s favorite search engine to the world’s favorite web browser, maps service, email client, mobile operating system, and online video depository. A billion people around the world now use each of...

Google Pixel press shot leaked, shows new home button and round icons

by Corbin Davenport

pixel-leakExactly one week ago, real photos of the Pixel and Pixel XL leaked. Although that leak did clear up exactly what we can expect appearance-wise from the Pixel devices, the images did not show the home screen - or the rumored new navigation buttons.

VentureBeat has leaked a press photo of the Google Pixel (not the XL), including a screenshot of the phone's user interface. We can clearly see the Pixel Launcher in action, as well as the new circular launcher icons. What is new, however, is our first look at the new navigation icons.

Roku's new streaming media players support 4K and HDR video

by Lauren Goode

After weeks of leaks about the new products, Roku has officially announced its new line of streaming media boxes.

The Los Gatos, California-based company has effectively replaced all of its media streaming boxes with new hardware; its streaming video stick, announced earlier this year, remains the same. The new Roku Express box replaces the Roku 1 with a much smaller form factor (75 percent smaller) and double the processing power of the original box. It streams HD video, not 4K like the top-of-the-line Rokus do, but it also costs just $30, making it the most affordable Roku. There's also a version of the Express box that comes with composite cables, for an additional $10.

The mid-tier Premiere and Premiere+ Rokus replace the Roku 2...

Focusmusic.fm Is Simple, Minimal, and Streams Music to Work To

by Alan Henry
Focusmusic.fm Is Simple, Minimal, and Streams Music to Work To

Music for productivity comes in various forms, but if you’re the type who enjoys non-vocal electronica in the background while you get stuff done, Focusmusic.fm delivers. Best of all, it’s in a simple, minimal interface with few controls and no playlists or other tools to distract you.

I’ve been using the service for a little while, and it’s perfect for what it’s designed to do: Give you something to listen to while you get some work done.

When I say the interface is minimal, I mean it—there’s a big play/pause button, a forward button and back button, and that’s it. You don’t even get to see the name of the track that’s playing, and there’s no playlist where you can browse the songs available and skip around through them. Press play, switch tabs, and go back to work.

The service is simple and free, and designed to be minimal on purpose. The addition of a bunch of tools to help you manage music or organize songs would be a distraction (and frankly, you probably already have a service that does that better.) Hit the link below to give it a try. I’m a fan of deep house and trance, so the built-in playlist worked well for me. If you’re not an electronic music fan though, you won’t find much to appeal to you unfortunately.

To reduce shipping damages, a Dutch bike company printed a television on their boxes

by Andrew Liptak

Dutch bicycle manufacturer VanMoof found that it had a problem. As it shipped its products to customers, it found that they were arriving to customers damaged. The company came up with a genius solution: print a graphic of a flatscreen television on the side of the box.

VanMoof had planned on keeping the trick a secret, and it wasn’t until Jason Gay of the Wall Street Journal posted up an image of the box that it was revealed:

The damage reports were a major problem for the company because the street bikes that it manufactures are at the...

Whatever you do, don't send your robot lawnmower after a moose

by Andrew Liptak

You might be angry that a moose has come into your yard to eat the apples from your apple tree, but scaring it away with a robotic lawn mower just isn’t going to work.

This is what was probably going through the moose’s head:

  • "Hey, I like apples. I’m going to eat these ones here."
  • "I love apples."
  • "These apples are delicious."
  • "What is this?"
  • "This annoys me."
  • "Well, whatever it is, I’m going to stomp on it."
  • "Okay, problem solved. Back to eating apples."

De-Clutter Your Wardrobe With Help From an Honest Friend

by Patrick Allan
De-Clutter Your Wardrobe With Help From an Honest Friend

It’s time to start packing away summer clothes and bust out the fall and winter garb, so it’s a great time to say goodbye to the stuff you barely wore. It can be hard to judge outfits on your own, though, so invite over a kind, but very honest buddy.

When you’re not 100% sure about clothing items, you need another pair of eyes that can tell you if you look good or not. That’s why Ann Lightfoot, a professional organizer at Done & Done Home, recommends you have someone over as a “lighthearted cheerleader” to help you pare down your wardrobe. Take all of the clothing items you didn’t wear or barely wore at all this season, and put on a fashion show for one. If they like something, pack it away for next year. If they don’t, toss it in the donation pile. The key is to pick the right person to help you. Lightfoot cautions against using a romantic partner since they’ll be inclined to always say you look great. Go with your most brutally honest friend or a sibling. They’ll tell you the truth while still wanting what’s best for you.

Best third-party camera app for Android

by Cella Lao Rousseau

Take better photos with a great third-party camera app on Android!

Shooting with your Android camera is usually great, but third-party apps can pack a punch in places you didn't even know you needed! From manual controls to real-time filters, to creative extras and so much more, you can achieve a lot more than you think you can with your phone photography by shooting with a third-party camera app.

Best overall

Open Camera

Free

Download now

Effortless to shoot with and packed with plenty of useful features, Open Camera is a free app that helps you take your phone photography snapshots to the next level.

With features like automatically taking photos with voice commands like 'CHEESE!', shooting RAW files, overlaying grids, locking orientation, volume key configuration, and so much more, Open Camera turns your Android into an even more powerful camera.

You can even use Open Camera to make shooting your videos smoother and simpler, as it supports some external microphones, helps with manual exposure time, and effortlessly focuses to get the perfect video clip every time.

Bottom line: If you're looking for an app that makes your photos and videos look great without confusing the pants off of you, Open Camera is a great call.

One more thing: You can add the date and timestamp along with location coordinates and text to your pictures.

Why the Open Camera is the best

Free, functional, and fun – the way phone photography should be.

Being able to take complete creative control of your Android phone's camera is a rare and sometimes challenging thing to do. There are plenty of third-party apps that exist out there competing to take the place of your standard camera, but very few make things so straight-forward while still allotting the user ample room for creative photographic expression.

The features Open Camera has are pretty vast depending on what you want to shoot, how you want to shoot, and your particular shooting style and taste. You have the option to record your videos in HD while simultaneously zooming with a single-touch control, or shoot RAW (DNG) files along with manual distance focus (if your phone supports it), manual exposure timing, and manual ISO.

Open Camera isn't just for people who know and understand all the bells and whistles of professional photography: it also has some extremely fun and quirky features that make shooting with your Android phone a creative adventure.

Set up remote photo taking with a voice command or a noise – all you have to do is whistle, and your Android device captures the perfect photo! The app also has optional geotagging so you can keep track of when and where you took your photos, while basic, yet practical, features like overlaying a grid disabling the shutter sound makes your entire camera experience smoother and more customized to what you're comfortable with.

At the end of the day, Open Camera does a good, straightforward job of getting users to be more creative with their shots, try out more professional-grade settings, and experiment with their phone photography. What else can you ask for with a camera app?

Best for fun

Prisma

Free

Download now

In the last few months, you've probably noticed more and more photos of people, places, and food (what else is social media for?) being uploaded to Instagram and Facebook with hints of different art styles.

Some photos may look like vivid watercolor paintings, while others resemble rough, charcoal sketches. Some are reminiscent of a specific artist's look and feel, while others mesh mediums like anime to cartoon-ify your photos.

Prisma is an app that works by turning your photos into modern works of art using art style filters. Just shoot your photo with the app – your image will be shot as a square – and then pick and choose the filter you think will look best on your photo! There are dozens of different options to choose from, so try a couple.

Bottom-line: If you want a camera app that mixes creativity and art with simple shooting, then Prisma is your gal.

One more thing: Prisma is an awesome app for social media — spice up your selfie a bit and slap a Heisenberg on that baby.

Best for Manual Controls

Manual Camera

$2.99

Download now

Manual Camera gives whoever is behind the screen complete control of almost all settings. It's almost like having a little DSLR in your pocket, which is perfect for pro phone photographers or people looking to get better versed in photography!

While the standard camera app for Android allows you to control a few settings, Manual Camera takes the basics up a notch with complete manual control of shutter speed, focus distance, exposure compensation, ISO, and white balance.

Unfortunately, this is the only app on the list that costs something, but it's worth noting that you'll be using several different professional settings to capture the clearest photos.

Bottom-line: If you're looking for a professional camera app that lets you adjust your settings and add more than just a few colored filters to your photos, check out Manual Camera.

One more thing: The app runs quickly, so you won't have to worry about waiting for it to load as you miss your perfect shot.

Best for Social Media

Candy Camera

Free

Download now

Fun, straight-forward, and super filter friendly, the Candy Camera is a great tool for shooting the perfect selfie or snapping the ideal social media post!

Candy Camera is a third-party tool that works by overlaying flattering filters overtop of your photos in real-time. That means you can test out what filters look best, and if need be, layer them with other filters before posting.

With the Candy Camera, you also get a couple of insta-makeup editing tools: you can slim your face, whiten your teeth, add concealer, lipstick, blush, eyeliner, mascara, and more!

Bottom-line: Candy Camera is the perfect partner for social media posts and popularity.

One more thing: You can also decorate your photos with stickers in the app. New stickers are even added every update!

Conclusion

Shooting with third-party cameras is important for several reasons: they help you get creative, they help expand your photography horizons, and they help turn your Android phone into the powerful little photography tool it really is.

Best overall

Open Camera

Free

Effortless to shoot with and packed with plenty of useful features, Open Camera is a free app that helps you take your phone photography snapshots to the next level.

Outdated thinking on wireless could cripple UK smart cities

by Donal Power
Concept of fast or instant shipping, Online goods orders worldwide

The former head of U.K. mobile telecoms giant O2 warns an antiquated “analog” mindset among government could stunt the development of smart cities.

Ronan Dunne mused on the challenges facing smart cities in the U.K. He recently left his role as head of Telefónica’s U.K. mobile subsidiary O2 to take over Verizon’s wireless unit.

See also: Who are smart cities initiatives actually benefiting?

Dunne said that the U.K. government needs to make it easier to roll out next generation mobile communications infrastructure. The consequences of lagging in 5G advancements could hamper the development of smart cities and related technology like connected cars.

“In the longer-term, we will forget this stupid debate about rolling out fibre cables,” said Dunne. “The UK taxpayers have to pay BT for digging holes in the ground which doesn’t make a lot of sense in this day and age.”

Many mobile operators have pushed for changes to the Electronic Communications Code (ECC) for years, and are lobbying for coverage in the impending Digital Economy Act.

The next stage of wireless

5G is the proposed next stage of wireless communications standards. Though it is currently in development, it is seen as a necessary evolution from the current 4G systems.

This is due to the massive increases in wireless data that are already flowing thanks to the advent of Internet of Things (IoT) technology.

IoT sensors form the backbone of smart city strategies, with everything from streetlights to manhole covers generating data that needs to be transmitted, analyzed and utilized.

Many telecoms experts have opined that 5G’s future role as IoT enabler will create new revenue streams for operators.

However, there have been doubts raised that the introduction of new the 5G infrastructure will be ultimately advantageous to telecommunication firms. New Street Research partner Andrew Entwistle warned earlier this year that 5G will not offer “any business case for a telecoms operator.”

Apple’s Siri-based Echo rival has reportedly begun prototype testing

by Vlad Savov

Amazon’s Echo speaker has been the surprise hit of the past couple of years, taking the awfully fragmented smart home tech market and giving everyone a central device to communicate with. Its popularity has prompted plenty of copycats, and a new Bloomberg report indicates that Apple is stepping up its own efforts to offer a competitor. An Echo-like device, built around Apple’s Siri voice assistant software, is said to have left the R&D stage and entered prototype testing inside Apple’s labs.

Apple has already laid much of the groundwork for creating what we might call a Siri speaker, having opened up Siri to third-party developers and also made it available on macOS computers as well as mobile iOS devices. The next logical step is...
