Walking Shelter: Sneakers Expand Into Human-Frame Tent

The next time you need a portable shelter, you could just pull it out of your sneakers and expand it into a tent using your own body as a frame. The Walking Shelter packs a lightweight nylon tent into two net pockets integrated into a pair of shoes. Pull it over yourself and you’ve got a rain-proof structure that will keep you dry and comfortable, as long as you don’t mind sitting up for extended periods.

Designed by SIBLING, a collective based in Melbourne, Sydney and Amsterdam, Walking Shelter can be customized by the user to adapt to a variety of contexts and environments. While it may not be the most practical tent for real-life use, it makes an interesting statement on the nature of human shelter in the modern urban world.

The design calls to mind other shelters, made for both practical applications and as statement-making thought pieces, that could make life more comfortable for the homeless. Could such a simple design help address a chronic global problem, in a small way?

Leader of the Pac Stapler

As you work, you’re surrounded by a myriad of notebooks, highlighters, pencils, and more, but no office supply makes racing against a deadline as entertaining as this Pac-Man stapler! It’s ‘game over’ for the mess of papers that has been cluttering your desk when you let this yellow fellow from your favorite childhood game chomp down on a stack of pages, neatly fastening them together with a mini staple!

Bloodthirsty Housecat Attacks Televised Birds
By now, we all probably know that cats are murdering psychopaths bent on torturing all manner of small rodents, insects, and birds to death. Therefore, faced with an absence of actual mortal coils to shuffle off to hell, cats will live out their blood fantasies through television. This cat in particular was observed attacking the same bird during the same TV program several times in a row, which is terrifying and hilarious all at once.

Also, Gearharts donates 5% of all Peanut Butter Pups sales to Companions for Heroes, an organization that matches rescue pets as companion animals to our nation’s wounded veterans.

Crawling Cities: 3D-Printed Shells for Hermit Crabs

Hermit crabs carry crystal-clear cityscapes on their backs, thanks to a series of 3D-printed shells by Aki Inomata. The artist scans the insides of hermit crab shells to ensure a perfect fit, and then prints skylines of cities like New York, Thailand and Greece in plastic using a high-accuracy 3D printer.
“I overheard that the land of the former French Embassy in Japan had been French until October 2009; that it was to become Japanese for the following fifty years, and then be returned to France,” says the artist. “This concept made me think of hermit crabs, which change their shells.”

“The same piece of land is peacefully transferred from one country to the other. These kinds of things take place without our being aware of it. On the other hand, similar events are not unrelated to us as individuals. For example acquiring nationality, moving, and migration.”

“The hermit crabs wearing the shelters I built for them, which imitate the architecture of various countries, appeared to be crossing various international borders. Though the body of the hermit crab is the same, according to the shell it is wearing, its appearance changes completely. It’s as if they were asking, ‘Who are you?’”

3D-printed shells for domestic hermit crabs could help preserve the ocean’s shell supply. MakerBot created ‘Project Shellter,’ a quest to create these shells, which resulted in some highly unusual options including neon colors and origami shapes.
