How to Keep Our Photo Websites Alive After We Die

by Joey J.

Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about how to keep my self-hosted photography website alive after I’m gone (no, I’m not dying anytime soon, though — hopefully). My website is where all my passions are combined into one (travel, photography, web design and development), and I treasure it like my child. I really want it to last beyond my time on this planet, but the problem is how.

My website is powered by WordPress and hosted by Bluehost (one of the biggest names in web hosting business), and in order to keep it alive, I as a webmaster need to continue paying and renewing its web hosting and domain name. If I failed to do so, the website will be permanently taken down by the host. It’s obviously a challenging task to get the hosting going when the webmaster (myself) is no longer around.

Avoiding “Digital Death”

The history of the Internet isn’t that long. It was only in the mid- to late-1990s that it began to be widely used. Then, WordPress (.org, the open-source Content Management System) was released in 2003, paving the way for blogging to be popular towards the late 2000s. So, even most of the early adopters of self-hosted blogs have been around for only 10 to 15 years, and I assume that the majority of them aren’t in their old age yet.

In not-so-distant future, though, this topic may become actively discussed because there will be webmasters and bloggers alike who want to leave their digital legacy by keeping their websites alive beyond their lifetimes. However, truth be told, most of those self-hosted websites won’t be able to avoid “digital death” unless it’s turned into a business and there are employees taking care of it.

Ask Your Child to Keep It Alive

Another possibility is asking your child or family member to look after it. I often ask my 8-year-old son to renew web hosting and domain name when I die (note: he doesn’t even know how a website is hosted), but he always jokingly says “No!”

Education starts at a young age! Kids these days are more tech-savvy than ever, but managing a self-hosted website requires some technical knowledge and experience.

That said, if my son is able to keep my website up for his entire life, it will have survived online for three-quarters of a century (I started my website when he was five), which is quite a feat. If he could convince his own child to keep my digital legacy, it’d cover longer than a century! But, for that to happen, I must keep good relationships with my son. If he doesn’t have any fond memories of me, there’s no chance that he cares about my website. Well, I won’t go into parenting tips, though!

If you’d like to go this route, make it easy for your child to maintain the website. You can consider the followings.

#1. Keep domain registration and web hosting together under the same company: I know this goes against the general practice of separating domain registration and hosting (e.g. domain registered with Hover, hosted with Bluehost) so that your domain can never be held hostage when you want to move away from the host. However, keeping both together is hassle-free for your child, as he or she doesn’t have to manage two separate accounts for renewal.

#2. Unsubscribe paid services: Apart from domain registration and web hosting (which are must), you may be paying recurring bills for other services like Gravity Forms. Unsubscribe all of them and replace with free alternatives where possible in order to reduce the running cost for your child.

#3. Teach your child how to manage your CMS (Content Management System): Your child should ideally “take over” your website, regularly updating the core files, and making sure that the website is up and running as it should be. I’m planning to teach my 8-year-old son WordPress in the upcoming years!

Wayback Machine an Answer?

I believe everyone has come across Wayback Machine, a digital archive of the Internet that allows us to access websites that no longer exist today. If you ran a website or blog in the past, search it by typing the URL. You’ll probably find your (partially-working) old site there.

Wayback Machine could be our answer, as this large nonprofit organization is highly likely to last for many years to come. That said, it’s hard to have a perfectly working website archived, as there is no easy way to save an entire website without missing pages and images.

Wayback Machine is a digital archive of the World Wide Web on the Internet. It comes quite handy when searching for websites that no longer exist today.

Instead of waiting for their crawler to come and archive our websites, we can voluntarily save pages using their browser extensions (install one for Chrome, Firefox, or Safari), but this can only be done page by page. So, if your website has 500 pages, you’ll need to visit 500 separate pages and save one URL at a time. Another downside is that your archived website won’t be publicly searchable on Google, and can only live in the confined world of Wayback Machine.

Free Blogging Platforms Keep Our Websites Alive Longer

Here’s another thought. Like myself, there are people taking pride in their “self-hosted” websites and disregarding free blogging platforms like Google Blogger, Tumblr, and Weebly (free plan) as “unprofessional”. It’s true that a hosting a business website on a free platform is unprofessional, but for those of us doing as a hobby (myself included), a free platform should have a better chance of keeping our websites up longer, as the website remains hosted forever unless the services get discontinued.

In fact, the biggest advantage of free blogging platforms is that they run “autopilot”. We can call them “managed hosting” as opposed to self-hosted platforms like WordPress (.org) where you as a webmaster are responsible for updating core files, etc. all by yourself. With free blogging platforms, there is no need to ask your child to look after the running of the website.

Google Blogger is run by the Internet giant Google and should have a better chance of outliving our self-hosted websites.

Leaving Digital Legacy in the Form of Social Media

Posted contents on social media such as Facebook, Instagram, and Medium, etc. can also be your digital legacy. Some of the social networking platforms (whether currently-existing ones or those coming out in the future) are certain to outlive our self-hosted websites. That said, I don’t feel any emotional attachment to my contents on social media (I don’t even have accounts for the aforementioned three services), probably because those are posted on a place where I have little or no control. I won’t call an Instagram page “my website”.

Conclusion

Well, this is very much an under-discussed topic, and I have no idea what the general sentiment is like among webmasters and bloggers. For me personally, I really want my website to live much longer than me. If there were a web hosting company that lets me pay in advance for the next few hundred years of hosting, I’d definitely sign up. Having said that, even the biggest web hosting companies today may not be around 100 years from now, though…

Netflix and YouTube are most throttled mobile apps by US carriers, new study says

by Nick Statt

Since the demise of net neutrality, US telecoms have increased the amount of throttling they impose on customers trying to watch mobile video through services like Netflix and YouTube, according to new research from a group of researchers at Northeastern University and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The study, the findings of which were published first by Bloomberg today, reveals the extent to which companies like AT&T and Verizon have taken advantage of lax government regulation under President Donald Trump to limit data speeds for customers.

This isn’t presenting entirely new information. All four big carriers in the US now offer unlimited data plans that restrict streaming video on mobile devices to 480p by default, in an...

Google Chrome erhält WebVR-Unterstützung für Oculus Rift-Headsets

by Benjamin Mamerow

Just tried it and yep, it works (had a quick look at the Google Mars surface demo). Without the flag enabled, you just get an option for a desktop 360 view. Enable the flag though and an option to view in VR is there, and it launches it straight to the headset.

Broadband advisor picked by FCC Chairman Ajit Pai arrested on fraud charges

by Nick Statt

A broadband advisor selected by Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai to run a federal advisory committee was arrested last week on claims she tricked investors into pouring money into a multi-million dollar investment fraud scheme, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The advisor, Elizabeth Pierce, is the former chief executive of Quintillion, an Alaska-based fiber optic cable provider operating out of Anchorage. In her capacity as CEO, Pierce allegedly raised more than $250 million from two New York-based investment companies using forged contracts with other companies guaranteeing hundreds of millions of dollars in future revenue. Pierce resigned from Quintillion in August of last year, and she stepped down from her...

Steven Furst’s role on Babylon 5 was a remarkable example of a sci-fi sidekick

by Andrew Liptak

Science fiction television is filled with fan-favorite characters, but behind every lead hero is their assistant. They’re often present in the background, usually only ever get a first name, and the role might propel their portrayer into minor fame on the comic con celebrity circuit, long after the show has ended. Stephen Furst’s Vir Cotto was one such character in the science fiction show Babylon 5, but over the course of the story, he became so much more than that: an example of where even background characters have incredible importance to the bigger picture.

Furst passed away earlier this week from complications related to diabetes, according to his Facebook page. He had a long acting resume, appearing in films such as Animal House,...

Samsung sets up airport kiosks for last-minute Galaxy Note 7 exchanges

by Andrew Cunningham

Enlarge (credit: Ron Amadeo)

Flying with one of Samsung's recalled Galaxy Note 7s is now illegal in the US. To make the exchange process easier for people who haven't had time to send their Note 7 back (or who hoped they could sneak theirs past the gate), Samsung is setting up booths ahead of security checkpoints in busy airports to swap out phones. This way, travelers won't have their Note 7 confiscated by airports or airlines. (Much of our kiosk information comes from a Bloomberg report.)

Samsung's official site only lists Australian airports as of this writing, but ABC News has also spotted a kiosk in San Francisco International Airport. The Korean company says it is trying to bring kiosks to other busy airports across the US. Workers at the kiosk will apparently help users with data transfer to minimize the inconvenience, but, of course, they can't replace the 7's unique hardware features.

If you bought the Note 7, your best move is still to return the phone where you bought it and settle for one of the other models we've recommended, especially since Samsung is giving out $25 credits on top of a full refund if you take your Note 7 back and switch to another brand. If you decide to switch to another Samsung phone like last year's Galaxy Note 5 or the Galaxy S7, that credit increases to $100.

Bowers & Wilkins P7 Wireless: Drahtlose Over-Hear-Kopfhörer für 399 Euro

by André Westphal

B&W_P7 wirelessIFA 2016.

Letztere sollen such passiv vor Geräuschen abschirmen.

B&W_P7wrlss_33

The LG G5's screen is 'always on'

by Sam Byford

LG's G5 is set to be a major departure from the company's previous flagship phones, with an entirely new design featuring an unusual accessory slot at the bottom. And LG just announced a new feature — according to a GIF posted to Facebook and reproduced below, the phone will have an "always-on" screen. "Never go asleep while others do," LG's message implores.

That doesn't mean that the phone's regular display will always be on, of course. It looks like the screen will display basic information like the time, date, and notification alerts in a black-and-white state. That's not a major departure from what Motorola has done with active notifications on phones since 2013's Moto X, but it does suggest that LG could switch to OLED screen...

The Two Modern Space Races

MarkWhittington writes: Observers of the current state of the space program like to maintain that a space race, such as occurred in the 1960s, will never happen again. They cannot be farther from the truth, since not just one, but two space races are going on. The Google Lunar X Prize is managing a race for the first private group to land a rover on the lunar surface and perform a number of tasks for glory and prize money. The FBI is investigating daily fantasy sports gambling after DraftKings and FanDuel scandal

by Rich McCormick

Daily fantasy sports operator DraftKings is under investigation from the Department of Justice and the FBI, The Wall Street Journal reports, as the government questions the legality of its business model. The DOJ and the FBI are considering whether DraftKings and daily fantasy rivals such as FanDuel constitute gambling operations, and whether, by accepting money, they are breaking rules set out by the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. Daily fantasy operators — which charge an entrance fee, allow players to build a team of real-world athletes, and pay out to winners in cash — argue that they are covered by an exemption in that act that allows for financial rewards in online games of skill.

This is How You Make a Massive 4×5-Foot Print in the Darkroom

by Michael Zhang

What’s the largest print you’ve ever made in a darkroom? If you’ve never done anything larger than the most common sizes, then you may find the video above illuminating.

Over the course of 3 minutes, we get to see how Norwegian photo assistant Oystein Gronvold recently went about creating a massive 120x150cm (~4x5ft) silver print from an 8×10 negative for photographer Dag Alveng.

“Not many people make darkroom prints this size these days, and its quite a tedious process, taking around 5-6 hours per print,” Gronvold tells PetaPixel. “All that work may in addition be wasted at the last step, which is the most difficult, namely to wet mount the print on aluminum.”

Mess the mounting up, and you get start the 6 hour printing process all over again.
