These 12 prints come from Love, a series of color lithographs that form a disjointed narrative about a woman who experiences love, although it is unclear if she is falling in love with a man, nature, or her faith. Each soft and dreamlike image is paired with a caption of fragmented poetry that serves as its title, but these phrases do not directly describe their corresponding images. Maurice Denis, who was also a writer, crafted these puzzling yet evocative captions to add layers of meaning through the interplay of text and image. John H. Wrenn Memorial Collection

The luminous, fluid brushwork and the harmonious cool pastel colour palette found in the present work are also hallmarks of Mucha’s late work. The sinuous line of Mucha’s Art Nouveau style is still evident in the sitter’s hair and in the folds of her voluminous garment, but it has been suffused through a symbolist bent – the delicate strokes of purple and blue which define the edges of the figure make her seem as if she is glowing, giving her an almost mystical quality.

This is one of countless nineteenth-century paintings evoking the art of the seventeenth century, popular because of its decorative qualities and often, for painters from the Low Countries, for its nationalist appeal. The composition of this watercolour is indebted to paintings by Pieter de Hooch. Van Hove (1814 - 1865) turned increasingly in the latter stages of his career to seventeenth-century interior scenes reminiscent of de Hooch.
