Overwatch's third anniversary kicks off with Gargoyle Winston and Honeydew Mei

by Jordan Devore
Darendukes

a couple of those are hawt

[Update: The anniversary event is now live in Overwatch. Take a look at these new skins!]

Has it really been three years of Overwatch? I forgot to get an anniversary gift, but there's still time to throw something together last-minute and hope it looks heartfelt. Note to self: burn the receipt.

Blizzard is running Overwatch's third-anniversary event from May 21 through June 10 with festivities ranging from a free full-game trial on PC and consoles, new skins like a wicked Gargoyle Winston, and the return of old seasonal goodies. "Past seasonal brawls are returning to the Arcade and will be rotated daily, including those found in Overwatch Archives – Storm Rising," according to Blizzard.

Even if you're on a hiatus right now, it's worth logging in during that time frame – doing so will earn you a loot box containing a guaranteed Legendary cosmetic item. You might not care, but future you will thank you for making the effort. Unless you unbox something dumb. Then future you will be pissed.

Six new Legendary anniversary skins and assorted Epic skins are planned. Here's two of 'em.

Academy D.Va

Gargoyle Winston

I need them both very badly, and I'm convinced I won't put in enough time to earn either.

Honeydew Mei

Blizzard knows what's up.

Orbital Pharah

Riot Police Brigitte

Toxic Roadhog

Carbon Fiber Pharah

Carbon Fiber Doomfist

Electric Widowmaker

Midnight D.Va

Oro Sombra

If you're thinking of giving the free trial a shot, heads up that pre-loading is live on PS4 and Xbox One. While the overarching event spills into June, this trial will only be around from May 21 through May 28. It's not too late to get into Overwatch in 2019. Really, it isn't! You might end up loving it.

That said, I'll live vicariously through all the new players. I've fallen off Overwatch and realistically won't hop back on until the next hero arrives, if not later. I still like it to varying degrees, but I'm struggling to keep up, and it's not a problem unique to this game. I'm in a single-player state of mind.

Get Involved, Internet: Help save Austin's legendary Vulcan Video

by Randall Colburn
Darendukes

Much love for Vulcan. But if you can't pay your employees and utilities and rent, then it is time to pack up shop or at the very least reevaluate your business model and make the necessary changes to stay open. Or maybe I'm just being cynical.

With the world’s Blockbusters all but shuttered, future generations of movie buffs will never know the joy of snatching the last VHS tape from a towering wall of new releases, let alone the shivering euphoria of peeking through your fingers at old, weathered copies of Ghoulies and Hellraiser. But the loss of video…

Snakeybus Challenges You To Drive A Bus That Keeps Getting Longer

In Snakeybus, as in life, you are your own greatest enemy. The game, in which you drive a winding, multi-sectioned bus that grows longer every time you drop off passengers, skillfully communicates a busload of resonant platitudes. Don’t look back, lest you collide with your own globe-encircling tail. The only way…

We now have our first look at Patrick Stewart in character as Star Trek: The Next Generation's Jean-Luc Picard since the film Star Trek: Nemesis back in 2002.

The image is a photo of a video clip shown at CBS' Upfronts presentation. Upfronts are hosted by TV networks like CBS to show off the next season's slate of shows primarily to advertisers, but sometimes to press as well. Press and advertising professionals who presented at the event shared the details on Twitter. The image itself was shared by Kate Aurthur, Buzzfeed's chief Los Angeles correspondent.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette TV critic Rob Owen described the brief scene in a tweet, writing that the clip featured "a Starfleet officer asking Jean-Luc, 'May I have your name, please, sir?' as Picard appears incredulous."

Spooky Midsommar trailer gives new horror rule: Don’t trust Swedish hippies

by Jennifer Ouellette

Dani (Florence Pugh) tags along with her boyfriend Christian (Jack Reynor) to a Swedish festival in a remote village that is not at all what it seems in Midsommar.

The seemingly harmless inhabitants of a remote Swedish village are harboring a terrible secret in Midsommar, a new film from Director Ari Aster, who brought us last year's chilling horror film Hereditary. The official synopsis describes the film as "a dread-soaked cinematic fairytale where a world of darkness unfolds in broad daylight." Judging from the trailer, that sounds about right.

Aster is a longtime fan of the horror genre and kicked off his career with a controversial short film called The Strange Thing About the Johnsons, in which a son develops a taboo incestuous relationship with this father. Hereditary, his first feature, also rooted its horror in dysfunctional family drama, with themes of trauma and grief—right before turning into a bone-chilling nightmare. It was lauded by critics as the scariest movie of the year and likened to such horror classics as The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby.

  • Dani and Christian are on the verge of breaking up. [credit: YouTube/A24 ]

Midsommar seems like it owes more to the 1973 horror/mystery, The Wicker Man, in which a police sergeant investigates a missing girl on the remote Hebridean island of Summerisle, where the inhabitants practice a form of Celtic paganism. It's a genuinely creepy, if dated and somewhat hokey, film. (The less said about the 2006 remake starring Nicolas Cage, the better.) Midsommar features the same bucolic setting with sinister undertones and incorporates the same notion of a harvest festival featuring a maypole dance. It's not a stretch to suspect that the same theme of pagan sacrificial rituals will appear.

Drones used missiles with knife warhead to take out single terrorist targets

Drone strikes have been the go-to approach by both the US military and the Central Intelligence Agency to take out terrorists and insurgent leaders over the past decade, and the main weapon in those strikes has been the Lockheed Martin AGM-114 Hellfire II missile—a laser-guided weapon originally developed for use by Army helicopters as a “tank buster.” But as concerns about collateral damage from drone strikes mounted, the DOD and CIA apparently pushed for development of a new Hellfire that takes the term “surgical strike” to a new level, with a version that could be used to take out a single individual.

The Wall Street Journal reports that just such a weapon has been developed and deployed on at least two occasions, based on information provided by multiple current and former defense and intelligence officials. Designated the Hellfire R9X, the missile has no explosive warhead—instead, its payload is more than 100 pounds of metal, including long blades that deploy from the body of the missile just before impact.

“To the targeted person, it is as if a speeding anvil fell from the sky,” according to the WSJ. Some officials referred to the weapon as "the flying Ginsu," because the blades can cut through concrete, sheet metal, and other materials surrounding a target.

Splitgate: Arena Warfare is the unholy union of Portal and Halo that we never knew we needed until now

by Anthony Marzano
Darendukes

I don't know if I'd be able to keep up with all that.

Everyone has that dream pairing of two of their favorite games. Most of the time they are a pipe dream but every now and then some mad lads come along and actually smash together two games that shouldn't go together and make it work, Psyonix did it by combining racing and soccer games with Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars and later Rocket League. Now 1047 Games want to combine Portal and Halo to make a free-to-play arena shooter and where do I sign up?

Taking its roots from two computer science majors putting portals into video games for a project demo, Splitgate: Arena Warfare isn't shy about wearing its influence on its shoulder. Inspired by the heyday of PC arena shooters, Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian formed 1047 Games and went about combining two of the biggest and best games of all-time into an online shooter.

Splitgate: Arena Warfare will launch on May 22 for Steam and despite the free to play model, the developers are preemptively assuaging fears of the usual free-to-play pitfalls by ensuring that any microtransactions in game will be limited to cosmetic items only. Speaking on why they wanted to use the free-to-play model, Proulx said: "As Splitgate evolved, we realized that players would be best served with a free-to-play model. We want to ensure that everyone who wants to play has the opportunity to do so."

Just from the concept alone, I'm having flashbacks to a version of Halo: Combat Evolved I used to play with my friends. No shields, 50% health, shotguns only, Chiron TL-34. Every step could be your last and it was so fast-paced that it took on a feeling of horror. It was also some of the most fun we've had with the series and if this game can capture even a fraction of the fast-paced, on your toes action then they are well on their way to a great game.

Splitgate: Arena Warfare will launch for Steam on May 22.

Meet ‘Dirt’, The Nevada Railway Cat That Always Looks Like He Needs A Bath

by Karolina Wv
Darendukes

Dirt. Awesome cat name.

Located on the ‘Loneliest Road in America’ is the Nevada Northern Railway – an old relic still preserved in time that brings in visitors from all over who long to witness some “touchable history.” A sight to behold, however, make no mistake these 1906 train cars are not the only tourist attraction in the area. Wandering around the East Ely Railroad Depot Museum is Dirt the Railway Cat – one of the mascots of Nevada. Famous for his distinct markings, he gives the appearance he’s been working all day on a locomotive, covered in coal. “As tours walk through the building people are just amazed about hearing the history and the stories of the railroad. Then as if he knew it was his cue to appear Dirt just walks into the room where the tour is, or out from under one of the trains and sits in the middle of the group with a sense of pride that only he can have,” Eric Mencis, the manager of guest services and social media director of the railroad told Bored Panda.

More Info: Facebook | Website | Instagram

Meet Dirt the Railway Cat and ‘King of the Shop’ at the East Ely Railroad Depot Museum

The engine house of the East Ely Railroad is the only home Dirt has ever known. He was born there 11-years ago to a stray that wandered in. “She [his mom]  had her kittens under one of our trains, a 1907 built rotary snow plow to be exact. A Rotary Snow Plow is a huge steam-powered train snowblower. Mom and the other kittens left and this one stray was all alone but scared to come out. So our train crews would leave a can of tuna on a chair every night for this kitten, eventually, the kitten came out friendly up to the crews,” said Mencis.

The scrappy kitten loved rolling around on the dirt floors of the engine house and climb all over the coal pines on our steam-powered train, so the crews named him Dirt. The name stuck as did the coal: “Dirt is actually an orange and white cat, but because at a young age he started rolling in the dirt and climbing on the trains, his white fur gets stained gray,” explained Mencis, “At a young age, Dirt learned not to lick himself clean, like normal cats, being part stray he likes to stay oily and dirty because it helps keep him tough looking and also in a sense keeps him clean because things don’t stick to his fur and bugs don’t go near him.”

Appearance is not the only feature that makes Dirt the perfect fit for railway life, he also has the personality to match: “Back when our trains were built, railroading was the 2nd most dangers job in the world. Mining was the first most dangerous job and we were a copper mining railroad, doing the first and second most dangers jobs in the country at the same time in the same place. It took rough and tough men 100 years ago to move millions of tons of rock, by rail to get melted down and make copper to provided electricity to the world. You look at old pictures of those men, and you can just tell in their eyes they have stories to tell. When you look into Dirt’s eyes, he has that same look.”

“Dirt is pretty much one of those old-time railroaders living now as a cat. Dirt walks around the shop like his the boss making sure everything is working right. The type of boss that started at the bottom and worked his way up the latter, the type who knows how hard and tough the job is but has faith that his men can get it done. He walks with a sense of pride around his engine house like these are his trains and he and he is proud of the men to keep them going. He will climb on and walk around the trains, like he is inspecting them, checking to make sure not a bold is loose or that the bearings are properly oiled up,” described Mencis.

People are fascinated by the historical significance of the railway but make no mistake Dirt steals the show and has the attitude of a celebrity: “After posing for a few pictures, we start to walk around the group, rubbing against visitors legs and letting them pet him. That old tough railroader on the outside but still a sweetheart on the inside. Our Guided tours can last about an hour long it is common for Dirt the follow the entire group for the tour. We also offer self-guided tours of the building and most of those visitors get to meet Dirt as well as he comes and checks out who they are.”

Dirt rules the engine house on his own, but for a period of time some tiny companions: “Dirt had kittens years ago, and most were also orange and white and got just as dirty as Dirt. Most didn’t have the sense of how to live around the trains so we rehomed them, with many of our train crews and volunteers adopting them and taking them home. One of Dirt’s kittens lived in the engine house for about 7 years but just over a year ago frond a better home. Dirt has gotten fixed since then.”

Like with many animal social media sensations, Dirt gained popularity when the museum began their social media push: “Dirt has always been popular with museum guest, but to keep the museum alive, we have to keep getting the word out. We are in Ely, Nevada, a town that is 200 miles in all directions away from anything. Since I started my job here at the railroad 3 years ago, we have gotten our social media to just grow and grow.”

However, Mencis said Dirt’s popularity was an accidental success story: ” I first posted Dirt about 2 years ago and he got some attention from people who have already met him. Then one day I posted Dirt on a quiet day and said Dirt wants to travel the world, share him and tell us where you are from. It took off and his fans started building. Then one of our volunteers who is a professional photographer by the name of Steve Crise got an amazing picture of Dirt and it really took off. In the photos, you just got a sense of Dirt’s personality and we played off of that. When we share him for his fans, we make sure his personality comes with the post. Like a picture of Dirt in front of the steam train usually says ‘Dirt says come on boys, we got to get this thing fired up, we have trains running this weekend, let’s get to work’ and people love it.”

Now Dirt has become an undeniable star, “I do love when Dirt gets shared other places without the museum’s name attached that people to recognize him. We had a lady come to visit yesterday who saw his picture in the gift shop not realizing she was at the place where Dirt lives and recognized him was overjoyed with excitement.”

The social media manager said the cat’s growing fame still surprises him: “I am shocked that he has become famous as he has. I knew he would be popular but not this famous. We do offer Dirt Tshirts, magnets, key chains, coffee mugs, and even his own coffee, and I have mailed his items around the world for people who purchased them on our online store. The biggest thrill of Dirt’s fame is just knowing how much joy he brings to people around the world.”

Ely, Nevada has a population of only about 4,000 and the museum gets about 30,000 visitors a year. Among these visitors are some hardcore Dirt fans said Mencis, “Some people have even rerouted their trip 200 miles out of the way to visit our museum and meet him. Of course, they stay and ride the trains too but their number 1 goal was to meet Dirt in person.”

It is easy to see this dusty cat is incredibly photogenic, so as a fun addition to their ‘Winter Photo Shoots’ they began the ‘Dirt The Cat Photo Contest.’ “Every February we hold what we call the Winter Photo Shoots. A steam train in the snow is a photographers dream, our museum as 2 of them and soon to have a 3rd in operation. When you add in authentic freight cars, crews in period costumes and dramatic western North American scenery, we get some amazing pictures. Each weekend of the winter photo shoots 30 photographers get full access to the railroad, we let them roam the shops and we take them out with the trains let them off, back the train up and run by them again to get pictures. The trains are easy to photograph it is all set up for them. As some fun, I told the photographers that whoever gets the best photo of Dirt over the weekends can win some coffee mugs and Dirt Coffee. So they just had some fun with it, I got a lot of great pictures for his fans to enjoy and the top winners got some coffee. This year was the first time we did it, so it may become an annual contest during the slower times of the year to get us attention.”

For those interested in visiting Dirt his humans have prepared some ‘tips’ for when you meet him.

“Keep talking while you tour the engine house and see the trains! Dirt gets curious when he hears a lot of voices. One of the reasons he comes out during our guided tours.”

“Don’t approach him too fast, you have to wait and let Dirt come up to you. He will walk around you to feel you out first, if you bend down and just wait for him to come rub against you, you are more likely to be his friend.”

“If Dirt is taking his cat nap during the day, your museum passes are good all day long, you can come back and try again later. The King deserves his beauty sleep!”

“The Nevada Northern Railway Museum is a national historic landmark. A copper mining railroad built in the early 1900s that was just left as it was 100 years ago, with the original locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars. We are not a museum with displays and exhibits set up to look nice, we are a museum that is really like walking back in time. Everything here is set the way it was 100 years ago. When people see pictures of Dirt in his engine house home that is the way it was, nothing has been rearranged, no machinery replaced with more modern equipment. Dirt makes sure we are dedicated to the stories and the way of life of a railroad 100 years ago.”

People agree that his distinct markings make him look right at home ‘working’ around train engines all day

Less than two years after buying Tumblr as part of its Yahoo acquisition, Verizon is reportedly trying to sell the blogging platform. Pornhub has also announced that it wants to buy Tumblr and end the site's Verizon-imposed porn ban.

"Verizon Communications Inc. is seeking a buyer for blogging website Tumblr, according to people familiar with the matter, as it tries to steady a media business that has struggled to meet revenue targets," The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday.

Pornhub quickly announced its interest after the news broke, although it isn't clear whether the two companies have talked. Verizon banned all adult content from Tumblr in December 2018, and Pornhub wants to restore the site to its former porn-filled glory.

Fred Savage to host after-show parody about a fictional sci-fi series on Fox

by Sam Barsanti
Darendukes

This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Here’s some crazy meta-bullshit from the folks at Fox: According to Variety, the network has given the green light to What Just Happened??! With Fred Savage, a parody of after-show discussion panels like Talking Dead on AMC. The series will revolve around a fictional sci-fi show called The Flare that is based on a…

The future is now!

Do you ever slump over and stare at all the rectangle boxes that drain you of energy and happiness, but are always low on power, slowly dying, and creeping…

Probable Russian Navy covert camera whale discovered by Norwegians

by Sean Gallagher
  • A beluga whale discovered off Norway's coast, wearing a harness that had an adapter for a GoPro camera, according to authorities. [credit: Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries ]

Evidence suggests that the Russian Navy has been looking for new ways to leverage what amounts to the original underwater "drone"—militarized cetaceans. Norwegian fishermen discovered a friendly beluga whale in the Barents Sea off the northeast coast of Norway on April 25. Belugas are native to the Barents, so the whale's presence wasn't the surprise—the surprise was that it was fitted with a camera harness with Russian markings.

The beluga kept approaching fishing boats and rubbing against them in an apparent effort to remove the harness. After failed attempts to remove the harness themselves, fishermen sent photos to a marine biologist with Norway's Directorate of Fisheries, and they reported that the whale was in distress. A Fisheries boat was in the area and responded, as reported by a Directorate of Fisheries spokesperson on Facebook:

The Directorate of Fisheries' oversight boat Rind was in the area and was asked to assist to release the whale for the tight straps. The crew of the Marine Service are trained to free whales from ropes and fishing gear. After a little lure with cod fillets, and with the fisherman Joar Hesten getting into the water wearing a survival suit, the inspectors Jørgen Ree Wiig and Yngve Larsen from the Marine Service and the Horse managed to release the whale…

The whale has probably escaped from Russia where it may have been trained to perform different missions such as underwater photography.

Video from Norwegian television of an attempt to remove the harness on a beluga.

The harness was reportedly marked with the label "Equipment St. Petersburg" and had an attachment point for a GoPro camera. Audun Rikardsen, a professor at the Norwegian Arctic University in Tromsø (UiT), told Norway's VG that neither Norwegian nor Russian academic researchers put harnesses on whales. "I have been in contact with some Russian researchers," Rikardsen said. "They can confirm that it is nothing they are doing. They tell me that most likely is the Russian Navy in Murmansk."

Prince estate to sell album full of songs Prince gave away to other artists

by William Hughes
Darendukes

Prince wrote Manic Monday?!

Prince was famously both prolific and extremely generous as an artist, cheerfully giving away any number of future hits to other musicians, either under his own name, or a wide variety of pseudonyms. Of course, in order to hand off songs like “Manic Monday” or “Nothing Compares 2 U” to groups like The Bangles and The…

Shocked Football Player Makes Unintentional Miraculous No-Look Catch

Darendukes

QB is a sniper

Ryan Smith did not expect to catch this pass. He didn't even know the ball was in the air. It just kind of clicks in perfectly. It even takes a second for the announcers to realize he had no idea what was going on. Gotta love some unintentional serendipity.

Mercy and Lucio are getting fancy skins for Overwatch League All-Stars

by Jordan Devore
Darendukes

like that Mercy skin

Blizzard just lifted the lid on a new pair of special Overwatch skins created to celebrate the Overwatch League 2019 All-Stars event. This year, it's a support duo – Atlantic Mercy and Pacific Lúcio.

Overwatch All-Stars 2019 Mercy and Lucio skins

These limited-edition legendary skins will cost 200 League Tokens each, so plan accordingly.

If you've been diligently following this season of the Overwatch League (thus earning tokens), that price should be doable. There are a ton of matches, after all. For everyone else, I'm sure Blizzard would love to remind us that League Tokens are purchasable with real-world currency. $10 gets you 200 tokens.

Atlantic Mercy and Pacific Lúcio will be available in-game starting May 7, 2019. On that note, the Overwatch League 2019 All-Stars festivities run from May 15-16 and during the pro event, viewers can earn double the normal League Tokens. The bonus rate will be six tokens per live hour watched.

If you missed last year's showcase, it's entertaining. Stick around for the 1v1 Widow duels.
