by Rob Bricken

As we wait—and wait—and wait—for Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland’s animated series Rick & Morty to return, this near-three-minute look the upcoming third season might help tide us all over. It’s only storyboards nd voices, but it still has that ol’ Rick Sanchez magic, by which of course I mean science. (Mad science.)

Orgasm sounds.

The way I see it, everybody has a “thing” they do when they get high. Some people gorge themselves on as many edible objects as will fit in their cottony mouths. Other people lay in the dark and listen to Phish. Still other people sit on their couch and look at Vine.

This Tiny Gaming Console Can Play Retro Games From 28 Different Systems

by Andrew Liszewski on Gizmodo, shared by Riley MacLeod to Kotaku

Aside from the pointlessly short controller cables, the only other complaint we have with Nintendo’s NES Classic Edition is that it only comes with 30 classic games. There are so many classic consoles and retro titles to choose from, which is why the RetroEngine Sigma might be a better alternative since it promises to…

Gaming’s rarest systems, carts, and collectibles can be found at this huge museum

by Sam Machkovech

FRISCO, Texas—Finally, there's a museum made for people like me.

The National Videogame Museum (yes, they spell it as one word) has been open since April of this year in the Dallas-area suburb of Frisco, and it houses an incredible collection of gaming memorabilia. The rarest cartridges, systems, and prototypes are all here, protected as if they were the Mona Lisa (and for some game collectors, they may as well be). Come here to marvel at one-of-a-kind finds like a Nintendo World Championship cartridge, a mint-condition Ultra Hand toy, or the only known white-molded Atari 2600 in the world.

The Literary Horror Of Eternal Darkness

by Peter Tieryas
Darendukes

Eternal Darkness is one of the best video games of all time.

Eternal Darkness is a 2002 GameCube game featuring an epically dark story that takes place over thousands of years. It’s a series of interconnected tales, almost like a collection of Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories, that weave together myth, occultism, and some of the dark chapters in religion. While most people associate the horrors of Eternal Darkness with the unnerving events that happen when your insanity meter dwindles, the most disturbing aspect of the game is the grand arc based on historical elements and the ensuing reign of terror that victimizes multiple generations of characters.

How the Universal Windows Platform briefly let an N64 emulator sneak onto the Xbox One [Updated]

by Kyle Orland

Update (Sept. 27): As expected, Microsoft has pulled Xbox One support from the emulator discussed below. Those that purchased and downloaded the app before the change can still use it on their systems, but new purchases can only use the app on Windows PC and mobile devices (and Windows Holographic, if they happen to have that).

Despite the change, the written description for the app still claims Xbox One support, leading to anger from some commenters on the Windows Store page. "I'm pissed," writes one commenter going by the handle jackson. "I just hear about this and I go to buy it so I can play some sweet n64 games but now the app doesn't run on Xbox. So either this gets updated, or I WANT A REFUND!"

Original story: In previous generations, if you wanted to emulate one game console on another, you'd generally have to use some sort of jailbreak or hack to install unauthorized homebrew apps on the system. Today, thanks in part to Microsoft's Universal Windows Platform, you can download a Nintendo 64 emulator to your Xbox One directly from Microsoft's official store.

The explosive growth of the 300-person “megagame”

by Ars Staff

Enlarge / A world map used in Watch the Skies. (credit: Paul Dean)

Welcome to Ars Cardboard, our weekend look at tabletop games! Check out our complete board gaming coverage at cardboard.arstechnica.com.

There’s a new kind of hybrid game doing the rounds that marries the large scale politicking of live-action roleplaying (LARPs) with the focused, often crunchy mechanics of an economic game. It’s played with dozens, even hundreds of players, it takes a whole day, and it has a clumsy sobriquet that perfectly encapsulates its grand ambition: the “megagame.”

Megagames have no strict definition, but here’s an outline of the (pretty typical) first one that I tried two years ago. Strange alien forces mass near the earth, alarming the world’s governments. Multiple teams of three-to-six players represent various nations, and teams take on roles like diplomats or military leaders. Each team plays its own straightforward game of economics to balance a country’s budget, fund the military, and direct scientific research.

The Galaxy's Most Addictive Game Is Hidden In Star Trek: Timelines

by Mike Fahey

In a season five episode Star Trek: The Next Generation, the Enterprise crew falls under the spell of a dangerously addictive augmented reality game. That same game lies buried within mobile game Star Trek: Timelines, an easter egg so well-hidden only one player has uncovered it, and they don’t even know it yet.

"Why are so many people/companies taking their 60s Marvel Kirby art down?"

by noreply@blogger.com (John)
PLC:
I looked at a couple of dealer websites. One, in particular, had 53 pieces up six months ago and seven now. The only 60s page left is one Kirby is only credited with “finishes” on.

...

The dirty little open secret for the last few decades is that it’s very likely a lot of Kirby’s art in the open market was effectively stolen. There are stories of stacks of pages just disappearing from the office.

...

If you own a page of Kirby art from Marvel in the 60s, how sure are you that what you own was legitimately sourced? How do you know the dealer you bought it from — even if it was 30 years ago — got it through legitimate means?

Would you want to give that page up? Would you want to get served a letter from Disney/Marvel legal? Even if you have the paperwork from where you bought it, how do you know that guy you bought it from got it through legitimate means?

Might be a good idea to hide the fact from the public that you own it. Take it down off the internet, keep it in your portfolio or hung framed on your wall, and never boast about it again.

How an over-ambitious Star Trek convention became “The Con of Wrath”

by Cyrus Farivar

Enlarge / George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu, discusses the ridiculous "Ultimate Fantasy" production in an interview. (credit: Larry Nemecek)

Even by modern convention standards, it sounds crazy. It wasn't just a Star Trek convention. Not just a Star Trek convention with nearly the entire original series cast present, either. It was a Star Trek convention with a "multi-media extravaganza," a laser show, and live musical performances all on a custom-made, constantly slowly rotating stage built like the Starfleet uniform badge insignia with a captain’s chair right in the middle.

As Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was being released, that's exactly what was planned for "Ultimate Fantasy" in Houston, Texas, at the Shamrock Hilton Convention Center and the adjacent Summit Arena in June 1982. The show was advertised all over Starlog and TV Guide. Huge billboards went up across the Houston area, and some organizers really believed that fans would come from overseas to see this four-hour live show.

There was only one problem: no one came.
