Today is Texas Independence Day

by Newsroom

Today marks the 177th anniversary of Texas' independence from Mexico.

Texas Independence Day is the celebration of the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. With this document, settlers in Mexican Texas officially broke from Mexico, creating the Republic of Texas. Texas Independence Day is an official holiday in the state of Texas.

U.S. Senator John Cornyn releases the following statement about Texas Independence Day:

“Today we celebrate Texas’ independence won 177 years ago by brave men like William B. Travis, Davy Crockett, James Bowie and the man whose seat I’m proud to hold in the U.S. Senate – Sam Houston.

“As Texans, we have much to be proud of and many to thank for making the Lone Star State the best state in the nation to raise a family and run a business. Entrepreneurs and business leaders are attracted to Texas because our taxes are low and our government is limited. As a result, Texas’ economy is leading the nation and our job market is growing.

“May we always remember those who contributed to birth of this great state and those who continue to defend it. May God bless you and yours and may He continue to bless Texas.”

100-Foot Sinkhole Opens in Florida Bedroom, Swallowing and Killing Man

by Max Read
Click here to read 100-Foot Sinkhole Opens in Florida Bedroom, Swallowing and Killing Man The earth opened up behind a one-story home in Florida late last night, swallowing an entire bedroom into a sinkhole—now 100 feet wide—and likely killing one. Authorities say that their equipment has been unable to find signs of life, meaning that the 36-year-old man who was sucked into the rubble is believed dead; according to early reports, the victim's brother attempted to rescue him, only to himself require rescue by an arriving sheriff's deputy. "It sounded like a car hit my house," Janell Wheeler, the man's aunt and one of the occupants of the home, told the Tampa Bay Times. The sinkhole, which expanded from 30 to 100 feet wide overnight, is reportedly still developing; its causes are unclear, though it's not man-made. [Tampa Bay Times | CNN | Sheli Muniz] More »

(Video Alert) Austin man Gary Thompson: Bogus Beggar Exposed By Lexington News Station Says He Scams $100,000 A Year

by Newsroom

Gary Thompson was exposed as a bogus beggar by a Lexington news station, and video of his confrontation is causing outrage at the ruse he pulled.  Thompson was the target of an investigation by LEX 18, which found him in a wheelchair on a public street asking for money. Thompson spoke slowly, as if he were mentally disabled, and told a story about a motorcycle accident that left him disabled and his family rich.  That part was true, the news station said — his family won $2.5 million in a lawsuit from Honda of America. But his story about being mentally disabled —and his manner of speech — was all fake. In fact, he even has a degree in speech pathology that allowed him to mimic a mentally disabled person.  Gary Thompson later admitted to his ruse on camera, saying he brings in between $60,000 and $100,000 each year.
