these are great

Sean Norvet’s “High on Stress” at Amala Gallery.

Currently on view in Tokyo, Japan at Amala Gallery is artist Sean Norvet’s small solo exhibition entitled “High on Stress.”

Norvet is something of a deranged chef with his artwork as he takes multitudes of ingredients and mixes them with little (or, perhaps, very much) regard.  This is of no concern, however, because what he ends up with is always a wonderfully delightful feast for the eyes and our visual taste buds are always eager for more.

High on Stress” is on view throughout the month.  Check out a few more of Sean’s paintings below:

Newswire: Reservoir Dogs celebrates its 25th anniversary with a new video game

by Matt Gerardi
Emahlstadt

aw yiss

Reservoir Dogs is 25 years old this year, and Lionsgate, which now owns the rights to Quentin Tarantino’s feature-film debut, is celebrating with a new video game based on the movie. Called Reservoir Dogs: Bloody Days, the top-down shooter will be a prequel of sorts, following Tarantino’s crew of colorful crooks on the heists that led up to the fateful diamond robbery at the center of the film’s events. It’s being co-published by Lionsgate, which made its gaming ambitions known back in 2014, and Big Star Games, a Spanish startup that focuses on developing and publishing adaptations of TV and film properties.

The game was showcased in private demos at last week’s Game Developers Conference, and by all reports, there’s more to Bloody Days than there appears to be at first glance. Players take a team of three characters into every mission and control ...

Newswire: Space Blood is looking for work on “NSFW”

by David Anthony
Emahlstadt

"Tactical Chunder" might just be my favorite album name of all time. These guys remind me a little of Adebisi Shank, too, right down to the masked bass player.

Chicago two-piece Space Blood is an instrumental math-rock band that cites both Battles and The Eric Andre Show as influences. And while that may sound like little more than clever marketing, there’s an absurdist streak that informs Space Blood’s approach, even when it’s wordless. This spring, the band will release Tactical Chunder, which was recorded by Sanford Parker at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio Studios, on Lonely Voyage Records, but The A.V. Club is premiering the first track from the album today. “NSFW (Nick Sintos For Work)” is built on a chugging bass riff and drums that lock in, pushing the song with spastic pulses, always feeling a hair off while somehow making it feel totally right.

Tactical Chunder is available for pre-order now.

Newswire: Mondo goes pew! pew! in this exclusive Star Wars x Mike Mitchell poster reveal

by Katie Rife
Emahlstadt

Apparently this will be open all weekend. Would love to make it out, if possible.

Mondo has paid tribute to hundreds of movies, TV shows, and other pop-cultural phenomena over the years in its screen prints. But for its next gallery show it’s going back to one of the founding pillars of nerd-dom by celebrating the 40th anniversary of Star Wars. And to do this, it’s brought back Mondo favorite Mike Mitchell to create a new batch of his signature full-color portraits of Star Wars characters in profile. Mitchell’s already done portraits of many of the principal players in the Star Wars universe, from Admiral Ackbar to Grand Moff Tarkin. But in this new poster revealed exclusively at The A.V. Club, he paints a dignified portrait of one of the grunts of the Star Wars universe: an Imperial TIE fighter pilot.

Review: Legion Is The Most Visually Brilliant Comic Book TV Show To Date

by Mat 'Inferiorego' Elfring
Emahlstadt

Really excited about this. It's my favorite "super hero" comic of all time (at least the Si Spurrier run was) and is now having all sorts of praise heaped upon it. Too bad I don't have FX or whatever-the-hell channel this runs on. Might have to buy the season through Amazon.

FX takes a shot at adapting a not-so-well-known X-Men character into a full-fledged television series. Legion takes some cues from the comic book counterpart's mental instability, and the opening episode offers up an hour and a half that has it's own visual look and style, with an intentionally confusing storyline.

David Haller believes he is mentally disturbed. He hears voices, sees things, and thinks he can move objects with his mind. He believes he's been in a mental hospital for some time, and he's under investigation for the death of another patient, Lenny. Haller recalls the story of how he met his girlfriend, Sidney and how she disappeared. In reality, a mysterious, militant group is trying to learn more about Haller and his powers.

No Caption Provided

The opening episode is, without a doubt, the most visually brilliant comic book adaptation thus far. The show uses setting, sound, and CG create this complex--and at times, puzzling--atmosphere that is unsettling for all the right reasons. Considering that the show deals with Haller's mental instability, Legion uses these aspects to create a feeling of unease and confusion, which creates a connection with the audience, allowing us to understand to some degree what Haller is going through.

CG isn't a huge part of the show, but it helps create some of these visually stunning moments, like in these pictures. However, it's not without its faults. Towards the tail end, during a very real gunfight, the CG doesn't flow with the rest of the scene. It looks out of place and can take you out of the moment.

The set dressings and world have this very-1960s feel to them, but we're also seeing flatscreen televisions and computers. It's a clash of eras, which again enhances the overall unease for viewers, not being able to get a grasp on Legion's reality. The hospital's set feels like a character on its own, with the circular ceiling patterns, wall of leaves and branches--which one patient was hiding in--and rooms with modern decor. That building is just as memorable as any of the other moments in the episode.

No Caption Provided

The story is confusing, chaotic, and messy, but that's the point the show is trying to make. Haller is an unreliable narrator, showing us early on that we can't always trust what we see. The fact that we see some of Haller's hallucinations and jarringly tossed between the past and the present means we can never rely fully on our own senses, creating a certain sense of unease. To its own fault, that is also one of the downfalls of the show. About halfway through the episode, it becomes a tad frustrating not getting answers quick enough. The questions that linger in the audience's mind are not all answered by the end of the episode, and it feels like there wasn't a strong enough hook to get people to come back.

In the grand scheme of things, these are minor nit-picks because Legion's first episode breaks away from the typical pilot format of setting up the world and over-indulging the audience with way too much information. Essentially, Legion's faults are also its strengths. It would have been a bit nicer if we knew more about the man with the yellow eyes, but there are always more episodes.

Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), as Haller, does a fantastic job. He's always holding back. He's confused. He's trying to make sense of the world around him but can't seem to piece things together. Stevens shines when he starts talking about how his character is actually crazy. There's little twitches in his face and body language that lead the audience to believe he is in fact delusional. We're trying to step into the mind of someone who is unbalanced, confused, but ultimately rational and intelligent. That's quite a load for an actor to take on, but Stevens does so immensely well. His costars do a solid job as well, with one standout being Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), who plays Lenny--Haller's friend inside the hospital.

No Caption Provided

Where does Legion fit in to the X-Men universe? Is David Haller the son of Professor X, like his comic book counterpart? No clue, but it really doesn't matter because the opening episode already established itself as an independent entity. If the rest of the series continues to be as brilliant as the first episode, it won't have the need to fit within a greater universe.

While there are many people that think there are way too many comic book television shows currently in rotation, Legion revitalizes the genre by presenting something completely different. It's not the typical superhero show. It's surreal, puzzling, and attention grabbing. This is one of the best opening episodes of a television show to date, not just superhero shows. Even if Legion the comic book character isn't up your alley, this show is worth every minute of your time.

LET ME PAY FOR A STAND-ALONE ESPN SERVICE. WHY IS THIS HARD!?!?

SI:
Multiple sources said ESPN has been tasked with paring tens of millions of staff salary from its payroll, including staffers many viewers and readers will recognize. Those with contracts coming up would be particularly vulnerable, sources said. The company is also expected to buyout some existing contracts, which is something rare for ESPN historically beyond a few NFL talents. The cuts are expected to be completed by June.

...

ESPN continues to shed subscribers at an enhanced rate, down to 88.4 million households in Dec. 2016. That number was 100.002 million in Feb. 2011.

"Before the Enlightenment, Europeans drank alcohol throughout the day. Then..."

by noreply@blogger.com (John)
HP:
“The impact of the introduction of coffee into Europe during the seventeenth century was particularly noticeable since the most common beverages of the time, even at breakfast, were weak ‘small beer’ and wine. Both were far safer than water, which was liable to be contaminated … Coffee … provided a new and safe alternative to alcoholic drinks. Those who drank coffee instead of alcohol began the day alert and stimulated, rather than relaxed and mildly inebriated, and the quality and quantity of their work improved … Western Europe began to emerge from an alcoholic haze that had lasted for centuries.”

Great Job, Internet!: Just a video of 18 turkeys engaging in a strange pagan ritual around a dead cat

by Clayton Purdom

Man, what the fuck:

Here are 18 turkeys tracing a patient, steady circle around a dead cat. “This is the strangest thing I’ve ever seen,” the film’s creator says, and while that is not exactly true in a world where (say it with us) a racist orange reality-TV steak grifter is the president, it is still extremely valid and strange! The Verge sought out explanation for this strange phenomenon from a biologist, who suggested the turkeys were doing a thing called “predator inspection,” in which they take a look at an animal higher up on the food chain, except in this case that predator is a fucking dead cat, so why would they be inspecting him? This is a line of thinking that lead to another, even more unsatisfying ...

Texas officially hires Bob Shipley as director of high school relations

by Cody Daniel
Emahlstadt

Did you know he and Steven McCoy were college roommates?

Welcome the Texas Longhorns new director of high school relations.

In a move that’s been quietly expected for some time, Tom Herman and the Texas Longhorns officially welcomed a Shipley back to the Forty Acres, as Bob Shipley, the father of Longhorn greats Jordan and Jaxon, has been added to Herman’s staff as the director of high school relations.

"I was really excited when Coach Herman called, I had never met him before," Shipley said in a statement. "When I came up and visited with him, the passion he had was really obvious. The plan he set out to me and the staff he has put together are both incredible. It's funny, you work your whole life trying to force things to happen that you'd like to happen, and this is something that he just called me out of the blue, and it's my dream job. That rarely happens in life. It wasn't a decision I had to think about very long."

"We're so lucky to have Bob joining our staff," Herman said. "He's obviously well known here, but also is highly respected in the high school communities across this state and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our director of high school relations position. He's a guy I've known about and respected for a long time, and he will be an invaluable resource for our program. We're thrilled to have him on board."

Prior to re-joining the Longhorns staff after a brief stint as an analyst for the 2013 season, Shipley was once again among the high school ranks, in which he served as the head coach and athletic director of Belton High School.

In total, Shipley has compiled 17 years as a high school coach at various stops throughout Texas.

"I started coaching over 32 years ago, and I've met a lot of incredible coaches," Shipley said. "I've developed great friendships and great relationships and respect for what they do. What they do for the youth of this state is immeasurable. I also love The University of Texas. I have a lot of passion for this program, this school and what it's done for my family. My two loves are University of Texas football and Texas high school football, so to be able to blend those together and be an ambassador for Coach Herman, this program and The University to the high school coaches throughout the state and the country, it's going to be a lot of fun for me."

A household name in the state with tremendous ties and relationships, Shipley looks well on his way to becoming a critical hire for Herman in what’s becoming an increasingly competitive recruiting landscape.

Pairing beer and noodle bowls

by DRAFT Staff

...aaaaaand now i want some pad thai and an ipa.

Pork Udon & Brown Ale
This bowl’s earthy, mushroom-flavored broth seamlessly integrates the brown ale’s nutty and toasted notes. Softness pervades throughout: The warm, full soup and the beer’s creamy body mesh beautifully.

Lo Mein & Strong Bitter
Soy sauce and sesame are to credit for this bowl’s salty, buttery goodness. Seek an ESB with a kindred buttery wisp; the sip’s nutty tones will underscore the bite, and its firm bitterness quickly cleanses the palate.

Pad Thai & IPA
Peanuts, lime juice and egg give this dish its signature taste. A classic IPA boosts the remaining flavors with resinous pine drawing out the vegetables and grapefruit pith that plays off the dish’s tang. The beer’s crisp bitterness deftly sweeps up the rich bite.

Chicken Vegetable Pho & California Common
The fragrant Vietnamese dish’s lime and mint highlight the rich, salty soup. A California common’s woody and minty hops effortlessly weave through the spice, while its soft, sweet malts marry with the broth for a simple, well-balanced pairing.

Spicy Beef Ramen & Chile Beer
Whether it’s out of a box or from your favorite noodle haunt, this bowl is all about the heat. Seek out a chile beer with enough malt to play up the noodles, but a snap of peppery fire that mingles with the spice for an augmented taste experience.

Celis Brewery trademarks re-acquired ahead of upcoming Austin brewing facility

by Press Release

Celis Brewery logo BeerPulse

[Press Release:]

(Austin, TX) – Austin, Texas is about to witness the rebirth of its first craft brewery with the resurrection of Celis Brewery, which was originally founded by Belgian brewer Pierre Celis in 1992. Christine Celis, Pierre’s daughter and partner in the original Celis Brewery, is restoring the family legacy with a new 22,000 square foot brewery in northwest Austin that is expected to start production in early Spring 2017.

The original Celis Brewery, which was located on Highway 290, became enormously popular introducing Texans to Belgian witbier, a refreshing style for the Texas heat. The brewery and “Celis” brand was later sold to Miller Brewing Company. In 2001, the brewery closed its doors, while the brand lived on under new ownership.

Now, the brand has found its way home with Ms. Celis having reacquired the “Celis” trademark from the then-current domestic and international rights owners, Total Beverage Solution (TBS) and Craftbev International Amalgamated., Inc.

“TBS is pleased to be able to help reunite the family with the brand,” says President and CEO of TBS, Dave Pardus.

Sushil Tyagi, President of Craftbev, who had originally acquired the Celis brand from Michigan Brewing Company and had retained international rights until now says, “We worked for years for this day to come when Celis is restored to its hometown and we look forward to helping further expand Celis beers around the world.”

“Rebuilding the Celis Brewery has been a labor of love that has taken me many years to accomplish,” says Ms. Celis. “We have a new location and new state-of-the-art brewing equipment, but will brew the same great Celis beers like the famous Celis Wit and Celis Grand Cru, to name a few. This new brewery has the capacity to brew more than 50,000 barrels per year, including Pierre Celis’ recipes from both the original Celis Brewery and his earlier days in Belgium. It’s an honor to carry on my family’s brewing legacy with my father’s original 1965 recipes using the proprietary yeast from Belgium.”

Celis Brewery will not only brew the original Belgian recipes, but it will do so with members of the brewing team from the original Celis Brewery. Led by Christine Celis, the team will include the master brewer and the Belgian brew engineer who designed the new brewery. Daytona Camps, daughter of Ms. Celis, will also join the brewing team.

A centerpiece of the original Celis Brewery, its massive copper kettle, was sold along with the original brewery and moved out of state. It has since made the journey back to Texas to be reunited with the family, and will be used as a beautiful bar in the new brewery’s taproom.

The new Celis Brewery is rapidly taking shape with the recent installation of a 50 HL Braukon brewing system. The packaging line and fermenters are scheduled to arrive later this month, while construction of the taproom continues. To preserve brewing history, Celis Brewery has shipped the historic brewing equipment used by Mr. Celis in Belgium to make his famous witbier. The equipment arrived in Austin in December 2016 and will be on display at the Celis Brewery in 2017.

Nation’s No. 1 ATH Justin Watkins flips to Texas from Florida State

by Cody Daniel
Emahlstadt

daaaaamn

Saturday’s junior day turned out to be tremendously fruitful for Tom Herman and the ‘Horns.

Tom Herman and the Texas Longhorns earned their first 2018 commitment on Saturday, as the nation’s top-ranked athlete Justin Watkins flipped to the ‘Horns from Florida State during his junior day visit.

The news was first reported by Ryan Bartow of 247Sports.

"The reason I'm choosing Texas is because the way they will be using me in their offense," Watkins told 247Sports. "From slot wide receiver to running back. The H guy is very important to their offense. I want to be that guy that stands out. I feel like this will be the school that would make me stand out the most. The coaches here are great. They all take the time to actually understand their kids and care for them."

A four-star prospect considered to be a flip candidate entering the afternoon, the Longhorns have made the Vanguard (Fla.) product a priority as of late, while the Seminoles were said to have let their interest falter.

Consequently, the Noles’ loss is the ‘Horns significant gain, and one Herman and the staff will use to garner recruiting momentum going forward.

"I want to shut down my recruiting because I know this is the right place for me," Watkins said. "I know it is. Their players get well taken care of. I believe coach (Tom Herman) will use me the right way."

Texas offered Watkins last month on January 20.

The Florida native holds 24 offers, including invitations from LSU, Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, Tennessee and UCLA.

Watkins ranks as the nation’s No. 39 player, No. 1 athlete, and the No. 9 player in Florida, per 247Sports Composite.

Newswire: Disney may have discovered the secret to wirelessly charging a whole room

by Sam Barsanti

In between inventing new kinds of Mickey Mouses and keeping the robots in the Hall Of Presidents from achieving sentience, engineers at Disney Research may have invented a crazy new way to make wireless charging a reality. This comes from Gizmodo, which reports that the researchers published a paper in the Plos One journal describing their plan and how it works. Essentially, their system can pump “around 1900 watts of energy” into an entire room “with an efficiency of 40 to 95 percent,” and there are only three or four major drawbacks to the system that would prevent any rational person from having it installed.

For starters, any room in which you’d want to use this wireless charging system must have aluminum-lined walls, and there must be a copper pipe extending from the floor to the ceiling right in the middle of the room with 15 capacitors installed inside ...

While it is a functioning "Whale Synth" this website (along with about five others) is a marketing campaign (and quite clever one, at that) for Mail Chimp.

Kottke is an idiot.

WhaleSynth

WhaleSynth is a cool little instrument for making whale sounds. There are three different species of whale to choose from, you can add clicks and sonar echoes, and you can also adjust the depth and number of whales in your chorus. Warning: this might occupy many many minutes of your time but could also soothe frayed political nerves.

Kate Hush’s “Female Behavior” at Cooler Gallery.Currently on...

Emahlstadt

love these. seriously thinking about getting a custom-made neon sign.

Kate Hush’s “Female Behavior” at Cooler Gallery.

Currently on display at Cooler Gallery in Brooklyn, New York until January 31st, 2017 (I know, I’m late on this!) is the fantastic looking solo exhibition of neon sculpture portraits by artist Kate Hush entitled “Female Behavior.”

Kate explains “Female Behavior:” Triboluminescence is the creation of light through the breaking of bonds. There’s pulling, ripping, scratching, crushing, abrasion - and finally, radiance. When a diamond is cut it fluoresces blue or red, not unlike how a person could be described. He is feeling blue, or she is red with anger. In people, in objects, solid states are disrupted. These rips are the the road to a blinding denouement. This friction is what I capture in intricately thin silhouettes - bodies and scenery made of light. The men have suffered, and will suffer. The women are conniving and manipulative, naturally. Their tears are phony and their heels are high. I am bringing to light, literally, their wicked ways. They are fiery, guileful, calculating, crazy … or is it just that their brightness is harder to shield? Others are rotten, are double crossers, and they are somehow forgotten. But when a woman produces sharpness it’s as if she yields a deep eternal cut. So why not capture that wound in light? I illustrate the moment when that sap realizes he’s followed her down the wrong road, right before the crash. If you’re going to call most women crazy bitches anyway, so why not light them that way?
