The Incal

by kaibutsu
Emahlstadt

i did not know about this. must now find and read The Incal.

Apparently a movie will be made of Jodorowsy's graphic novel, The Incal. The original comics were written in the aftermath of the cancellation of Jodorowsky's Dune, and was a major inspiration for The Fifth Element. Per Jodorowsky, the director they've chosen is exactly the right person for the project.

Texas Tech's meat judging team won its third straight national championship

by noreply@blogger.com (John)

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal:

Tech's Meat Judging Team opened the season with a first-place finish at the Eastern National Competition but then struggled in its next two outings, finishing fourth at the American Royal and AMSA High Plains competitions. But when it was all on the line this weekend, Texas Tech delivered in a big way.

...

Texas Tech finished first in overall beef (2,154 points), beef judging (1,116), lamb judging (569), total placing (1,940) and reasons/questions (841) while taking second in beef grading, fourth in pork judging and fifth in specifications.

Every Wes Anderson movie, ranked from worst to best

by Jesse Hassenger
Emahlstadt

man, time flies. all-of-a-sudden, i haven't seen almost half of wes anderson's filmography.

have not seen: mr. fox, isle of dogs, grand budapest, french dispatch, although that last one just came out, i guess.

It’s easy to accuse Wes Anderson of making the same movie over and over again, endlessly remixing familiar elements in slightly different ratios: symmetrical compositions, absent or inadequate fathers, carefully labeled minutiae, frustrated artists, detail-packed set design, and deadpan dialogue often prefaced with…

Bryce Dallas Howard Directing a New Take on ’80s Sci-fi Movie ‘Flight of the Navigator’ for Disney+

by John Squires

In the wake of directing episodes of “The Mandalorian,” Bryce Dallas Howard will next find herself in the director’s chair for a reboot of the 1986 sci-fi adventure, Flight of the Navigator!

THR reports that the new take on the ’80s movie is a Disney+ project. The site reminds, “The original movie told of a 12-year-old boy who is abducted by a UFO and reappears eight years later at the exact same age and with no memories of what happened. When NASA officials spot a connection between the boy and a recovered UFO and try to ensnare him, the kid attempts to unravel the intergalactic mystery while trying to reunite with his family.”

The new movie, THR notes, will put a female-led twist on the classic.

The 1986 movie was directed by Randal Kleiser and written by Mark H. Baker, Michael Burton and Matt MacManus. Joey Cramer starred as David Freeman, the movie’s main character.

Watch the trailer for the original Flight of the Navigator below.

Fede Alvarez-Produced ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Slices Its Way to a New Home at Netflix!

by John Squires
Emahlstadt

booooo! fuck netflix.

With a serious lack of promotion up to this point, it’s been easy to forget that a new take The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is on the way, with the Fede Alvarez-produced Texas Chainsaw Massacre set to be a sequel to Tobe Hooper’s original classic. We’ve been promised “Old Man Leatherface” and the return of Sally Hardesty, two teases that have us very excited.

So what’s the latest on the film and when can we expect to see it? While we don’t yet have a date, THR reports today that Netflix has now acquired global rights to the film!

David Blue Garcia (Tejano) directed the movie for Legendary, which was written by Chris Thomas Devlin and filmed last year. The film is a sequel to Tobe Hooper’s original classic.

THR notes, “The movie takes place years after the shocking events of the original, in a setting where Leatherface hasn’t been seen or heard from since. The film seeks to pick up where the Hooper and Kim Henkel film initially left off, bringing the most notorious horror franchise back to life in the same bold and provocative manner that it was first introduced to the world.”

Elsie Fisher (“Castle Rock”), Sarah Yarkin (Happy Death Day 2U), Mark Burnham (Wrong Cops), Moe Dunford (The Dig), Olwen Fouéré (Mandy), Alice Krige (“Star Trek”), Jacob Latimore (The Maze Runner), Nell Hudson (Victoria), Jessica Allain (The Laundromat), Sam Douglas (Snatch), William Hope (Dark Shadows), and Jolyon Coy (“War & Peace”) star.

Olwen Fouéré (Mandy) is Sally Hardesty and Mark Burnham (Lowlife) is Leatherface.

Alvarez is producing with Bad Hombre’s Rodolfo Sayagues, alongside Kim Henkel (co-writer of the 1974 film), Ian Henkel and Pat Cassidy, who are producing via their Exurbia Films.

"The Texas Bullion Depository, sold as a gold mine for taxpayers, could end up costing millions"

by noreply@blogger.com (John)
Emahlstadt

texas gonna texas. this state is a piece of trash.

The Houston Chronicle:

When state lawmakers decided in 2015 that Texas needed to be the only state to have its own precious metals depository, supporters said there were plenty of reasons the project would be a gold mine.

...

“When I first presented this, to be honest with you, we got hundreds and hundreds of people from all over the world, really, who wanted to be able to put their gold in something that has the Texas banner above it,” said ... the bill’s author. “This doesn’t work in Wisconsin, it doesn’t work in Idaho.”

Best of all, because the state would find a private partner to build and own the physical depository, it would cost taxpayers nothing. The enterprise would even reap a big profit for Texas. “We estimate that we could raise tens of millions of dollars in fees,” [the bill’s author] testified.

More than three years after the depository opened, none of those things has happened. Yet this year, state lawmakers quietly voted to let the state borrow millions of dollars to bail out a project created to fix a problem that didn’t exist and which they had vowed would cost nothing.

TROUBLE Singer ERIC WAGNER Refused To Take COVID-19 Vaccine Before Contracting Virus: 'He Stood His Ground On The Matter'

Emahlstadt

fairly sure this is the dude i got covid from. at the very least, we contracted it at the same show.

Ron Holzner, formerly of doom metal legends TROUBLE and currently in THE SKULL, spoke to the Chicago Reader about the recent passing of his longtime bandmate Eric Wagner. Eric, who was TROUBLE's original singer, died last weekend after a battle with COVID pneumonia. He was 62 years old. According to the bassist, Wagner was generally opposed to institutionalized medicine but he wouldn't make an exception for the COVID vaccine. "We argued about it, and he stood his ground on the matter," Holzner said. "I always joked, 'The World According To Eric Wagner — you should write a book.' He lived his life his way." Wagner, who smoked cigarettes and occasionally drank and vaped, had health issues, but had begun taking better care of himself and switching to a plant-based diet, Holzner said. Ron also confirmed that Eric recently completed work on a solo album. "It will be released in 2022," he said. "I played on three songs, as well as members of his bands BLACKFINGER and LID and TROUBLE alumni Sean McAllister, Dave Snyder, and Chuck Robinson — as well as former PENTAGRAM guitarist Victor Griffin." Less than a week before Wagner's death, his bandmates in THE SKULL went public with the fact that he was infected by the novel coronavirus. Unvaccinated people, like Wagner was, are far more likely to be hospitalized or die from COVID-19 than people who are fully vaccinated. According to a study released this past Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, unvaccinated people are also nearly five times more likely to be infected with COVID-19 than people who got the shots. Infectious disease experts have said that large-scale outbreaks among unvaccinated people are being fueled by the highly contagious delta variant. TROUBLE formed in 1979 and released several classic albums like "Trouble", "Manic Frustration" and "Plastic Green Head". Wagner left TROUBLE in April 2008, citing his disdain for the touring life as the main reason for his departure. Eric was one of the guest singers on Dave Grohl's (NIRVANA, FOO FIGHTERS) heavy metal side project PROBOT, whose 2004 album featured heavy metal vocalists from the '80s and '90s. Last year, TROUBLE partnered with Hammerheart Records to re-release the legendary doom legends' entire musical catalog, in addition to their upcoming album. This partnership that will see the distribution of the band's entire library of music that spans over three decades.

Alex Proyas Reveals That He’s Developing a ‘Dark City’ Series!

by John Squires
Emahlstadt

orly

A world where the night never ends…

Just four years after The Crow, filmmaker Alex Proyas returned with neo-noir science fiction movie Dark City, ushering us into a nightmarish world no one seems to wake up from. All these years later, Proyas returns to that rich, visionary universe with the short film Mask of the Evil Apparition, which is playing as part of the Popcorn Frights Film Festival beginning tonight.

In the 20-minute short, “A young woman with no memory searches a deserted nocturnal city looking for something or someone. Only problem is she can’t remember who or what. She encounters twin brothers who may be her salvation, but one of them warns her that the “Mysterious Ones,” a nefarious group of clones, are after her. Another woman in disguise also offers to help, but can she be trusted?” The brand new short is being described as “a film about identity by visionary filmmaker Alex Proyas, made entirely with virtual production, and from the Dark City (1998) cinematic universe originally created by Proyas.”

The virtual presentation will also feature a Q&A with Alex Proyas and filmmaker Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2, Mayhem), and Bloody Disgusting was able to preview that this afternoon.

During the chat, Proyas reveals that a Dark City series is in the works!

Dark City right now is really an intriguing one to me because we’re developing a series, a Dark City Series,” Proyas explains to Lynch.

He continues, “Which we’re in the very early stages [of] but I’m having to reanalyze in order to construct a new story. I’m having to go back and kind of jog my memory as to what we actually did and what I think worked and what I think didn’t work and reevaluate my own film, so that’s been a very interesting experience as well which I’ve not done before.”

Proyas also chats about the 2008 Director’s Cut of Dark City, which allowed him to go back in and restore his original vision for the movie – as best as he possibly could, at least.

You know, it tested very poorly and I was forced to do certain things I didn’t agree with and we made good to a certain extent in the director’s cut,” he recalls. “Because you couldn’t completely resalvage it. I mean the whole point of a director’s cut is the illusion that we resalvage what we’ve done originally. But you can never do that. Often it’s just impossible. In those days we shot on neg and the negs being cut. And its been cut in a certain way and it’s very, very hard to go right back to what you originally designed. So you do like a hodgepodge version of it. Certainly it’s closer to my original conception than the theatrical cut was, but it is still not exactly what my original conception was. You would have to go right back to dailies to do something like that.”

You can watch the original trailer for Dark City below. Rufus Sewell starred as John Murdoch, “A man who struggles with memories of his past, which include a wife he cannot remember and a nightmarish world no one else ever seems to wake up from.” The cast of the 1998 movie also included Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, and Richard O’Brien.

Make sure to grab your tickets for Mask of the Evil Apparition, streaming as part of Popcorn Frights. We’re told, “Both the Q&A and film will be available for everyone in the US to access starting at 9pm EST tonight, August 12th, through the duration of the fest, August 19th.”

A24 Gives Birth to Doomy and Extremely Weird ‘Lamb’ Trailer; In Theaters October 8th! [Video]

by Brad Miska

A24 is lighting a fire under the Cannes hype that hailed the distributor’s next arthouse horror film, Lamb, as “batshit crazy.”

Today comes the official trailer that’s not only weird as fuck, but also doomy and gloomy, looking like a perfect complement to A24’s The Witch. In fact, it appears as if director Valdimar Jóhannsson was directly inspired by the film.

Lamb is a Christmas-set Biblical horror story of a childless couple, María (Prometheus star Noomi Rapace) and Ingvar (Hilmir Snaer Gudnason), who are sheep farmers in Iceland. On Christmas Eve they find a newborn who is half human, half sheep.

The footage surprisingly reveals some shots of the hybrid child, who looks absolutely adorbs. Yet, the trailer foreshadows something sinister for the couple who decide to keep the lamb-child and raise it as their own.

If you’re licking your lamb chops in anticipation, Bloody Disgusting learned today that Lamb will open in theaters on October 8th!

"Almost 100 enormous sinkholes appeared in a month" in Croatia

by noreply@blogger.com (John)

The suspicion is that a recent large earthquake accelerated a slow process:

A month after the earthquake, there were almost 100 sinkholes spread over a 10 sq km (3.8 sq miles) area, with new ones opening every week.

The hole in Borojević's garden is now the largest in the area. When it first appeared it was 10m (33ft) wide, but started to grow almost immediately.

"My wife was in the house the whole morning, looking occasionally through the window," says Borojević. "Around 2pm she noticed something strange in the garden. We went outside and there was this huge hole in our orchard." Over the following three months, the hole tripled in size.

But the Borojevićs were lucky. Other sinkholes in the area opened up just a few metres from the doorsteps of people's homes and one appeared beneath a house

by John Squires
Emahlstadt

it's really too bad daren doesn't read reader anymore... been waiting forever for this moment to happen.

Deadline provides an update today, reporting that Keri Russell, Ray Liotta, Alden Ehrenreich, O’Shea Jackson and Jesse Tyler Ferguson have signed on to star in the movie.

Brian Duffield (Underwater, Spontaneous) is also on board to produce.

Finding what Austin was in the eighties and nineties today in another city.

by /u/crohnyidea
Emahlstadt

"Drop the romantic yearnings for some lost Golden Age. These are the good old days...Brooklyn, Carmel, and Santa Fe don’t need your sorry Hipster ass. There’s a whole big continent out there full of places that could use some love and they’re dirt cheap. Many of them are gorgeous even though they may not get much publicity. Others are seriously ugly, but have their own gritty appeal. And quite a few of these amazing undervalued spots have at least a few charming and engaged people knocking around doing cool shit. Go find one that speaks to you...The world you want is one you make yourself from spare parts, not one you discover and purchase."

also, bellingham, washington, apparently.

I like this city how it is now but it for sure has lost a lot of charm even from 2010 till now. I'm looking for a liberal artsy city, bright blue dot in a sea of red. Where real estate prices are not fucked yet and you can experiment with concept bars, concept stores etc and be weird.

Please advise where I can find that.

Cyberpunk 2077’s performance at ‘a satisfying level’, says CD Projekt CEO

by Dom Peppiatt
Emahlstadt

was just playing yesterday and died from fall damage from a jump ~5 feet from the ground. twice.

the game is JUST enjoyable enough (on a series x) to keep coming back for a couple hours of gameplay a week. hardly the world-changing new IP it was anticipated by many to be.

Cyberpunk 2077

After six months of patches, a slew of court cases and a massive public backlash, CD Projekt CEO Adam Kiciński believes Cyberpunk 2077 is now at ‘a satisfying level’.

During a WSE Innovation Day conference picked up by TVN24 (via VGC), Kiciński commented that CD Projekt feels comfortable with the level of quality the game has reached since its fairly disastrous launch last year.

When asked about the stability and performance of the game now, some six months after its release, Kiciński replied: “We have reached a satisfying level in this regard.

“We have also been working on improving the overall quality, which we are also quite happy about. Of course, we also removed bugs and visual glitches and we will continue to do that. Over time, we will also be introducing improvements to the general game systems that players have highlighted.”

So that bodes well for the future. But it’s not been easy getting to this stage: staff have reportedly called out management’s unrealistic expectations in an internal meeting, the studio’s reputation has taken a massive hit, and CD Projekt recorded a sizeable profit slump in Q1 2021.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVWJPYKCMco

But perhaps you can see why Kiciński is emboldened: Cyberpunk 2077 returned to the PlayStation Store this week, which marked the end of an eight-month period of the game’s absence on Sony storefronts. Sony pulled Cyberpunk 2077 off the PS Store after the game’s buggy, unstable state became clear, but Microsoft opted to keep the game on sale, albeit with modified refund practices.

As well as being available once more on PlayStation platforms, we also heard last week that Microsoft has confirmed that its Cyberpunk 2077 refund scheme is reverting to the company’s more standard refund policy for digitally-purchased games as of July 6.

If that’s something you’re keen on trying yourself, we wrote a guide on how to try and ask for a refund from Xbox.

Watch on YouTube

To date, Cyberpunk 2077 has sold at least 13 million copies.

The post Cyberpunk 2077’s performance at ‘a satisfying level’, says CD Projekt CEO appeared first on VG247.
