The Mighty Booth! Doolin’s Irish Pub

that looks like a great place to drink

Do you say an internal “Yessss!” when your server takes you to a booth and not a table? Then you know what we’re talking about. The Mighty Booth is a weekly celebration of everything we love about the semi-closed-in compartments in our favourite haunts. What’s your favourite one in Vancouver?

As requested by one of our readers, this week we feature Doolin’s Irish Pub. As so wonderfully described by Heather: “We try to get the one with the secret door that may lead into mysterious realms between the snug wall and the bartender’s back.”

Household Brands Become Tasty Street Art

by Pinch Food Design

Household Brands Become Tasty Street Art

It just dawned on us that we don’t always have to write about stuff we like. Sometimes, we have strong opinions on what we don’t like. And rarely, do we come across something where we cannot decide. And this month, that’s what we’ve chosen to share with you, the undecided.

The artist that sparked this contribution is Dorota Pankowska, aka Dori the Giant.

At 24 years old, the photographer by trade has taken to the streets of Brampton, Ontario with a quirky and delightful street art series she calls PRO BONO PROMO. Armed with bottles of ketchup, mayonnaise, peanut butter, and bright orange processed cheese, Pankowska, takes household brands and stencils their logos using the product itself. She claims to be “poking fun at the fact that this almost looks like free advertising for the companies – with free samples included!”

And although we’re not sure if we get the joke, especially since these major corporate brands already monopolize our shopping aisles, her tongue and cheek approach to free advertising for them, somehow still makes us smile.

But why? In a time where everything artisanal and locally-sourced is supposed to be king, it’s hard to admit how warm and fuzzy certain junk foods can make us feel. The funny thing is, the food itself doesn’t make you feel good. It’s the memories connected to the brand that somehow overshadow the preservative-filled hangover. And maybe that’s how Pankowska’s pieces are speaking to us.

Or is it that we also use food as a medium?

From yarnbombing, zip tie installs, and space invader style mosaics, graffiti has come to encompass a plethora of materials. So the introduction of food is not so out-of-left-field… but in our minds, pretty brilliant.

“I love all the street art that I see every time I visit Toronto, and I wanted to do something like that in Brampton, which doesn’t have a big art scene. When I was brainstorming with my friend, I thought about expressing my love for Nutella by putting the logo around the city, at which point I asked myself, Why not actually make it out of the stuff?” – Pankowska via Fast Company

Her meticulously curated pieces, found on surfaces chosen for how their texture or color might contrast with the product itself, pushed us to re-think our reaction to her series. A white wall of mortared cinder blocks as relief for fluorescent orange Cheez-Whiz goop, is this art? Why can’t we look away?!

In the end, we leave you to make up your own mind. At least if you don’t like it, her particular brand of tagging is ephemeral and washes right off.

Beat ATM fees with my Hot Wheels lifehack

I feel like @rose would appreciate this: "The bank won't charge you a penalty, and you get your money and a shiny new toy"

Beat ATM fees with my Hot Wheels lifehack

ATM fees suck. Rather than shell out an extra $3 every time you want to access your own cash, use this simple trick: dash into your local grocery or big box store, snatch up a Hot Wheels die cast of your choice for less than a buck and ask for cash back. The bank won't charge you a penalty, and you get your money and a shiny new toy.

Here's an extra tip. Most stores have a maximum withdrawal of around $40. Need $120? Grab three Hot Wheels and purchase each of them with separate transactions. Pull the maximum cash back with each buy and you're set. Magical.

Here’s the deal with those red umbrellas hanging along the seawall!

by Bob Kronbauer

We received the letter below from an anonymous source this weekend, explaining those red umbrellas you may have spotted along the seawall! – BK

redumbrellas

“We are writing to you as anonymous Vancouverites with a request. We read your articles and know your commitment to the creative vibrancy of this city, and so we would like to share our creative act with you. As a testament to this beloved city, we are suspending handfuls of red umbrellas from naked trees along a patch of the Spanish Banks seawall. Our love affair with the city’s rainfall must be expressed, and we thought of no better person to share it with than you. Will you help spread the word?

Under cover of night, four Vancouverites meet to celebrate their city. From Spanish Banks, skyline silhouettes Stanley Park, Cypress. Tonight, we have reason: for too long we’ve grumbled of wet, not truly celebrating our City’s great gift – the rain. For in our dark, damp days do we not await the pleasures of spring: sunshine, buds, colours emerge. Alas, what of the pleasures of winter: as rains pour, leaves fall, umbrellas open to meet the skies, rainblossoms. Under cover of night, four Vancouverites meet to celebrate their city, for better or worse, rain or shine.

In civic spirit, the Rainblossom Project (with the help of VIA) invites Vancouver’s sister cities of Odessa, Yokohama, Edinburgh, Guangzhou, Los Angeles, and Seoul to spread the red.

Sincerely, Vancouver”

A Futuristic Space Shuttle-Like Mountain Shelter for 8

by Caroline Williamson
Prettocraig

Me thinks 8 people would have to be very friendly

A Futuristic Space Shuttle-Like Mountain Shelter for 8

Back in 1938, Charlotte Perriand worked with Pierre Jeanneret to develop a futuristic mountain shelter called the Refuge Tonneau. Her love of the mountains, plus inspiration from a children’s fairground ride that was photographed in Croatia, led to the idea of a space shuttle-like structure with a metal frame and a central pole, much like that of a carousel. After careful research, Cassina created a reproduction based on the drawings, notes, and furnishings that were already produced by Perriand for other projects.

The dodecahedron structure was ahead of its time as decades later, similar structures were used in the Antarctic in 2002 and at the Mars Society Desert Research Station in 2011. The metal framework is made from industrial materials, like aluminum for the panels due to them being lightweight and easy to assemble and disassemble. The shape is meant to not resist the wind and the adjustable piles help bring stability on uneven land.

The interior is made from pinewood giving the space a warm, natural feel that’s welcoming to visitors.

Inside, the bottom floor can sleep two with single beds that fold down and on the mezzanine level, there are two double beds and two single beds. Overall, the shelter can sleep eight people!

Perriand thought carefully of the layout and made sure everything had a place in the small residence. The heater fits inside the central steel pillar taking up very room but providing heat for the whole interior. The tiny kitchen has a small area to work and a steel sink where snow from above melts down to provide running water. There’s also a shelf for a camping stove and space for food items.

The single beds can be folded away when not in use thanks to a system of leather belts that mimic those on sleeper cars on trains at that time. During the day they can be used as seating.

Carving Paper: The Surprising Sculpture of Li Hongbo

by David Behringer

Carving Paper: The Surprising Sculpture of Li Hongbo

From an inch away, the sculptures of Li Hongbo look like plaster. They are not. These large reproductions of classical busts are 100% paper. And I’m not talking about papier-mâché, or cast paper pulp, or painted paper – just a stack of raw white paper, impossibly carved by hand.

Bust of Marseilles, 2012

The “block” from which each sculpture is carved is composed of thousands of sheets of paper, each glued (one at a time!) in a precise and delicate pattern of stripes. When lifted or manipulated by gallery staff, the pattern relieves itself, effortlessly expanding like a delicate accordion or alien honeycomb.

The smooth surface is not painted or coated in any way. Hongbo lightly sands the finished sculptures to create a fuzzed edge that visually dissolves into its neighbor under pressure of gravity. The yellowish interior is a result of the filtered light.

A Venice Beach, CA Restaurant with an Inventive Ceiling

by Caroline Williamson

@rose & @lau! How is it?

A Venice Beach, CA Restaurant with an Inventive Ceiling

Komodo’s first incarnation was as a taco truck and then they also decided to set down roots in a 3000 square foot space in Venice Beach, California. They turned to MASS Architecture & Design to create their vision and that included a really cool ceiling treatment that pays homage to their modest roots.

They wanted to reference the taco truck without being too literal so that lead them to the paper taco trays that they use on the truck to serve the tacos. After months of planning and coordination, the team spent a week individually screwing, drilling, and piecing together hundreds of the taco trays.

33-year-old banker leaps to his death from JPMorgan’s Hong Kong headquarters, latest in string of apparent suicides

by National Post Wire Services
Prettocraig

There have been several bankers, who have committed suicide over the past few weeks, which makes me think somebody has fucked up big and there is some something happening in the financial markets that is not going to be pretty

A 33-year-old man jumped to his death from the skyscraper roof of U.S. investment bank JPMorgan Chase & Co’s Asia headquarters on Tuesday, police said.

JP Morgan has confirmed that the man who jumped was an employee at the firm with the last name Li. He was a junior investment banker.

Li was certified dead in hospital after the fall at around 2 p.m., a police spokeswoman told Reuters. Police did not yet know the circumstances surrounding his death.

Horrified finance workers in neighbouring offices circulated pictures via social media of him standing above the company logo emblazoned on top of the Chater House building in central Hong Kong.

One Instagram user, kurtlinsfat, posted the following image, which he said was taken by a colleague on Tuesday:

“A sad and tragic incident occurred in Chater House, Hong Kong, today, which is currently being investigated by the police. Out of respect for those involved, we cannot yet comment further,” JPMorgan Chase & Co said in a statement.

Witnesses say that police tried to stop Li from jumping from the 30 story building, 10 floors of which are used by JP Morgan, around 2:00 or 3:00 pm, but to no avail.

The Chinese-language newspaper, Apple Daily, carried a photograph of Li lying in a pool of blood on the busy road, next to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

The latest incident comes at a delicate time for the financial industry, when a spate of deaths have alarmed observers.

Last month, a 39-year-old JP Morgan vice president died after falling from the roof of the bank’s European headquarters in London.

Then on Feb. 3,  Ryan Crane, a JPMorgan Chase & Co. employee who in a 14-year career at the New York-based bank rose to executive director of a unit that trades blocks of stocks for clients, died from unknown causes in his Stamford, Connecticut, home at  37 years old. The cause of death will be determined when a toxicology report is completed in about six weeks, a spokeswoman for the state’s chief medical examiner told Bloomberg.

The series of untimely deaths among finance workers and business leaders over the past three weeks extends beyond JPMorgan.

On Sunday, Jan. 26, London police found William Broeksmit, a 58-year-old former senior executive at Deutsche Bank AG, dead in his home after an apparent suicide.

Here’s a look at a few more recent incidents:

On Monday, Jan. 27, Tata Motors managing director Karl Slym died after falling from a hotel room in Bangkok in what police said could be possible suicide.

Slym, 51, had attended a board meeting of Tata Motors’ Thailand unit in the Thai capital and was staying with his wife in a room on the 22nd floor of the Shangri-La hotel. Hotel staff found his body on Sunday on the fourth floor, which juts out above lower floors.

On Wednesday, January 29, Russell Investments’ Chief Economist Mike Dueker was found dead in an apparent suicide. Police said it appears Dueker took his own life by jumping from a ramp near the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Tacoma, Wash., AP reported. According to Bloomberg, Dueker, 50, had been missing since Jan. 29, and friends and law enforcement had been searching for him.

The week before, a U.K.-based communications director at Swiss Re AG died. The cause of death has not been made public.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the deaths among finance workers has shaken London and raised more concerns about stress levels of bankers.

It notes that last August, the finance chief at Zurich Insurance Group AG committed suicide and left a note blaming the company’s chairman for creating an unbearable work environment.

In August, a 21-year-old Bank of America intern died after reportedly working consecutive all-nighters at the bank’s London office.

Wall Street banks including Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Credit Suisse, subsequently told junior bankers to take more time off.

Queen Elizabeth II down to her last million as the Royal palaces are ‘crumbling’

by Steven Swinford in London, The Telegraph

The Queen’s finances were at a “historic low” with just £1-million left in reserve, MPs said.

Her courtiers were advised to take money-saving tips from the Treasury.

A report by the Public Accounts Committee found that the Queen’s advisors were failing to control her finances while the Royal palaces were “crumbling.”

MPs said her advisors had overspent to such an extent that her reserve fund had fallen from £35-million in 2001 to just £1-million today.

Associated Press
Associated PressBuckingham Palace and Windsor Castle are reported to be in urgent need of repair. Staff must catch rain in buckets to protect art and antiquities, while the Queen’s old boilers were contributing to bills of £774,000 a year.

The Royal household had made efficiency savings of just 5% over the past five years compared with government departments, that are cutting their budgets by up to a third.

MPs on the committee said the Treasury must “get a grip” and help to protect the Royal palaces from “further damage and deterioration.”

Margaret Hodge, the Labour chairman of the committee, said: “We believe that the Treasury has a duty to be actively involved in reviewing the Household’s financial planning and management — and it has failed to do so.”

Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle are reported to be in urgent need of repair. Staff must catch rain in buckets to protect art and antiquities, while the Queen’s old boilers were contributing to bills of £774,000 a year.

Mrs Hodge said: “The Household must get a much firmer grip on how it plans to address its maintenance backlog. It has not even costed the repair works needed to bring the estate back to an acceptable condition. Again, the Treasury has an oversight role here.”

In April 2012 the Sovereign Grant replaced the old way of funding the Royal family through the Civil List and various Government grants.

The Sovereign Grant represents 15% of the net surplus income of the Crown Estate, land holdings that generate money for the Treasury.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said the sovereign grant had made the Queen’s funding “more transparent and scrutinized” and was resulting in a “more efficient use of public funds.”

He said that repairing the Royal palaces was a “significant financial priority,” and that the Royal household had almost doubled its income to pounds £11.6-million since 2007.

The spokesman said: “The move to the Sovereign Grant has created a more transparent and scrutinized system, which enables the Royal household to allocate funding according to priorities. This has resulted in a more efficient use of public funds.”

A Treasury spokesman said: “The new arrangements established by the Sovereign Grant Act have made the Royal finances more transparent than ever while providing the long term stability necessary for good planning.”
