Newswire: Netflix orders new sketch comedy series from Bob Odenkirk and David Cross

by Katie Rife
Patrick Kennedy

Oooh! VERY intriguing...

Rejoice and hail Satan, Mr. Show fansDeadline reports that Netflix has ordered a new sketch comedy series from Bob Odenkirk and David Cross. Netflix has ordered four episodes of the half-hour sketch show, cheekily dubbed With Bob And David, as well as an hourlong “making of” documentary. Here’s the official description:

After being dishonorably discharged from the Navy SEALs, Bob and David are back serving our country the way they do best, making sketch comedy. Four half-hours of brand new comedy featuring all new characters, all new scenes, and most importantly, all new wigs.

This announcement comes after Mr. Show alum Paul F. Tompkins tweeted a picture of himself and the Mr. Show gang hard at work on a mysterious new project earlier this year. At the time, Cross told The A.V. Club that the group was meeting “in anticipation of being able to do (something?) to ...

David Ortiz claims he's been drug tested "more than 80" times since 2004.

by Barry Petchesky
Patrick Kennedy

“In some people’s minds, I will always be considered a cheater. And that’s bullshit. Mark my words: Nobody in MLB history has been tested for PEDs more than me. You know how many times I’ve been tested since 2004? More than 80. They say these tests are random. If it’s really random, I should start playing the damn lottery. Some people still think the testing is a joke. It’s no joke. Ten times a season these guys come into the clubhouse or my home with their briefcases. I have never failed a single one of those tests and I never will.”

David Ortiz claims he's been drug tested "more than 80" times since 2004. Hardball Talk notes that this means one of two things: Either Ortiz is lying about how often he's been tested, or that Ortiz is tested so frequently because he has tested positive before.

Newswire: Steven Spielberg to direct the film adaptation of Ready Player One

by William Hughes
Patrick Kennedy

Pretty excited about this one.

When news broke last year that screenwriter Zak Penn had been tapped by Warner Brothers to adapt Ernest Cline’s best-selling Ready Player One to film, rumors began swirling about high-profile directors looking to helm the movie. Said rumormongers apparently weren’t kidding around, as it’s been announced that Steven Spielberg will be throwing his considerable skills and cachet behind Cline’s elaborate nerd culture scavenger hunt of a story, just as soon as he finishes working on The BFG. In hindsight, it’s a natural fit; the novel’s focus on adventure, technology, and an almost overwhelming sense of nostalgia places it firmly in the famous dinosaur hunter’s directorial wheelhouse.

As with all books published since 2006, Ready Player One takes place in a dystopia; in this case, it’s one where people hide from their miserable lives and a ruined economy by playing in a virtual ...

An excuse to watch old Tyson knockouts? Don't mind if I do...

Martin Scorsese is reportedly set to direct a biopic on Mike Tyson with Jamie Foxx in the title role. Tyson has compiled a video of each of his 44 knockouts and wants his fans' help in choosing his top 10 for Foxx to study.

The top 10 from this video are definite contenders.

All hail air conditioning

by Jason Kottke

Here's The Economist's obituary of Lee Kuan Yew, the founder of Singapore.

Among a number of 20th-century luminaries asked by the Wall Street Journal in 1999 to pick the most influential invention of the millennium, he alone shunned the printing press, electricity, the internal combustion engine and the internet and chose the air-conditioner. He explained that, before air-con, people living in the tropics were at a disadvantage because the heat and humidity damaged the quality of their work.

Ángel Di María Gets Ice Grill, Then Red Card For Grabbing Ref

by Billy Haisley
Patrick Kennedy

Di Maria lost his damn mind. Great GIF though.

About a minute before the GIF you see above, referee Michael Oliver gave Manchester United's Ángel Di María a yellow card for an obvious dive. Frustrated and angry, Di María decided to snatch at the back of the ref's shirt, demanding an explanation. That's when Oliver pierces Di María's soul with that icy glare before hitting him with a red card for good measure.

Arsenal fan Piers Morgan tells God he will commit suicide if the Gunners lose to Man United

Screen Shot 2015 03 09 at 5.06.22 PM Arsenal fan Piers Morgan tells God he will commit suicide if the Gunners lose to Man United

Back Man United to beat Arsenal at 4/1!!!

Click here to bet on Man United to beat Arsenal at 4/1!!!

Piers Morgan took to Twitter on Monday afternoon to make a deal with God ahead of Manchester United’s match with Arsenal in the FA Cup.

The Gunners head to Old Trafford for a massive quarter-final match against the Red Devils, with both teams knowing that this competition is their last likely opportunity to score silverware this season.

Manchester United have all other avenues to success blocked off, while Arsenal’s Champions League hopes are hanging by a thread after they lost 3-1 at home to Monaco.

On paper, Louis van Gaal’s team seem pre-game favourites.

Both teams come into the game in decent form, as Arsenal have won 10 of their past 12 games in all competitions, while Man United have only tasted defeat twice in their past 22 outings.

In head to head matches, however, Manchester United have the edge, having won 11 and lost just one of their last 15 matches against Arsenal in all competitions.

Moreover, Man United have won their last 6 home matches against Arsenal in all competitions.

With that taken into consideration, Piers Morgan appears to have made a dangerous public declaration, saying he will commit suicide via the electric chair if the Gunners lose.

This video is a bit misleading. The ride is shown twice but the first time through it's slowed down so it lasts more than a minute. The full-speed replay starts at 2:01 and is still impressive. (via digg)

Marseille Goalie Catches Water Bottle Chucked At Him From The Stands

by Kevin Draper

Marseille beat Toulouse 6-1 last night, and a Toulouse fan—perhaps upset that Toulouse is on track to be relegated—tried to take his frustrations out by chucking a water bottle at Steve Mandanda. But the fan couldn't have picked a worse target, as Mandanda is Marseille's goalkeeper, where his entire job is to catch or deflect missiles rocketed near him. The ever considerate Mandanda even asked the journalist interviewing him if he wanted some water.

The National are recording their Grateful Dead tribute w/ Will Oldham, Lee Ranaldo, Tallest Man on Earth & more (pics)

by brooklynvegan

Excited for this.

the whole crew (via)
National

The National have been talking about an all-star indie rock tribute to The Grateful Dead for long time now, and 2015 would be a good year to finally release it given all the excitment surrounding The Dead's 50th anniversary. It's seeming like a possibility that that will in fact be the case, as the band are/were up in Woodstock at Dreamland Recordings working on it.

We already knew they were planning to include members of Vampire Weekend, Bon Iver, Kurt Vile, The Walkmen and Megafaun, and from the pictures they've been posting on Instagram, it's looking like way more really exciting people are involved too. It had already been talked about to maybe include Sonic Youth guitarist and major Dead fan Lee Ranaldo, but it's now confirmed that he recorded at Dreamland with them too. Will Oldham (aka Bonnie 'Prince' Billy) is there (!). Kristian Matsson (aka The Tallest Man on Earth) is there. Walter Martin from the Walkmen is pictured. Cass McCombs and Phil Lesh collaborator Joe Russo, who both just played a Dead tribute in Brooklyn were there, and Sam Amidon too. Josh Ritter's band, etc member Josh Kaufman is there along with his former Yellowbirds bandmate Sam Cohen, and Takka Takka/Gabriel and the Hounds/sometimes National, etc member Conrad Doucette is in the pictures too.

Looks like this is turning out even more exciting than it first seemed. Check out more pictures from the recording sessions below...

Leonard Nimoy, 1931-2015 :: [Insert 'lived long and prospered' joke here.] [Star Trek]

Since the entire rest of the internet/culture is going to spend the next few days eulogizing the great Leonard Nimoy -- who has passed away, at age 83, of pulmonary disease -- we're not going to try to compete with other comprehensive portraits.

Instead, let's enjoy, for the 1000th time, his single greatest career moment ever.

Indeed it does.

Newswire: The FCC reclassifies Internet as a utility in a major victory for net neutrality

by Katie Rife

Thanks, at least in part, to Last Week Tonight With John Oliver (that open letter from pretty much everybody who ever has or will play Coachella probably didn’t hurt), net neutrality advocates are celebrating today as the FCC moves to approve new regulations that will reclassify Internet service as a public utility. This will prohibit Internet service providers from demanding websites pay them in return for faster, more reliable access to their customers, as Comcast did to Netflix last year. So while Comcast will still arguably be a bunch of assholes, at least now the company can’t ruin your binge-watching plans because Netflix failed to make its tribute payments on time.

And despite the complaints soon to be registered by amateur pundits with screen names like ObummerSuxx and RgnGrl69—complaints rendered, ironically enough, on the Internet—this does not give the federal government the power to tax the ...

The Morning Person Paradox

by John Herrman

Some people did cheat less in the morning, Sah found, but only if they were early birds to begin with. The opposite was also true: night owls cheated less in the evening. Time of day had less effect on honesty, the group concluded, than did the synchronicity between person and environment. “Our results should really dissipate those stereotypes of morning people being more saintly,” Sah says. “The important thing is the match.” Early birds aren’t ethically superior. And, to the extent that other research suggests that they are, it may just be that they are luckier: modern society, for the most part, is built around their preferences. We are expected to function well early in the morning. We can’t just wake up when our bodies tell us to and work when we feel at our peak.

Research suggests people who get up early are no more ethical than people who don’t, unless they are people who are going out of their way to get up early, which is something that can only be known by the sleeper himself. So, in conclusion: trust nobody, including morning people.

Oof. The NCAA, continually proving that they are the worst.

Nacita got into Baylor with an academic scholarship, and at the time of his enrollment, he was homeless. According to Nacita, he has now been declared ineligible by the NCAA for allowing a close family friend to put him up in an apartment.

Hark, A Vagrant: Katherine Sui Fun Cheung

buy this print!

I read this quote, from an interview with Katherine Sui Fun Cheung, and the interviewer asked about why she was a pilot and all that, and she just said "I wanted to fly, so I did." And I thought MAN! I can't even figure out what to eat for breakfast, never mind sailing through a load of barriers just because I think I want to give something a shot. "Flying? Whatever, I'll just Do It."

Another quote? "What's the point of flying a plane if you can't have fun doing it?" I love her!

Look at her! We all want to be her.

I love early aviatrices - Bessie Coleman, Amelia Earhart, Beryl Markham, etc - they were like "oh is there a brand new job on the face of the earth? Think I'll invite myself to do it before anyone says I can't."

Not too much time goes by before Top Gun washes up once again on these shores.
