Canadian architectural firm AGATHOM have completed the renovation of a home in Peterborough, Ontario.

Reflections in Peterborough
Over the years, the owners of this bungalow in Peterborough had added two wings and cultivated a landscaped pond in the back accessed by a generous deck. Yet the 2,500-square-foot home was mostly closed off to this impressive little ecosystem, populated with frogs and butterflies, and the additions had created a labyrinth of disjointed spaces.
AGATHOM was brought on to renovate and reorganize the interiors, and to create a connection among them and to the outdoors, while also maintaining the home’s modest street-side appearance.
As many plans were possible, the clients were free to choose a preferred interior layout. Upon their decision, the most important gesture was to create a window wall at the garden, and position it on an angle that brings it – and the dining room beyond – closer to the outdoor setting.
Framed in Spanish cedar, the glazing is grand yet human-scaled. Most all other rooms were designed with a view through the glass, including the entrance and the living room. The result is a circulation loop and a cone of vision that connects one room to the next, and all to the pond.
The sunlit dining room is the pièce de resistance. Here, a portion of the roof was excised and a square section was dropped in at a raised angle. From the street, this architectural graft, glazed on its sides, is barely noticeable. But it transforms the back of the home, in scale, function and sheer virtuosity, by raising the window wall’s height, and linking the new to the old.
Made of fir, its ribs extend to connect it above the roofline to the other main addition: a white chimney tower that unites, while also separating, the living and dining rooms. Fireplaces were carved into either side of the tower – a raised one in the dining room, a low one in the living room that places the fire at one’s feet.
Throughout the home, the fine details tie the spaces together. Railings and millwork with recessed door handles are crafted in anigre wood; the floors are made of warm cherrywood, and the rooms are furnished with Danish pieces and custom-woven rugs.

The goal of News Feed is to catch up with your friends and find the things that matter to you. We’re always looking to people on Facebook to tell us how we can improve this experience. We’ve heard from people that they want to see fewer stories that are hoaxes, or misleading news. Today’s update to News Feed reduces the distribution of posts that people have reported as hoaxes and adds an annotation to posts that have received many of these types of reports to warn others on Facebook. We are not removing stories people report as false and we are not reviewing content and making a determination on its accuracy.
What are hoaxes?
Hoaxes are a form of News Feed spam that includes scams (“Click here to win a lifetime supply of coffee”), or deliberately false or misleading news stories (“Man sees dinosaur on hike in Utah”). People often share these hoaxes and later decide to delete their original posts after they realize they have been tricked. These types of posts also tend to receive lots of comments from friends letting people know this is a hoax, and comments containing links to hoax-busting websites. In fact, our testing found people are two times more likely to delete these types of posts after receiving such a comment from a friend.
Recently, we added an option for people to report a story they see in News Feed as false. This works in the same way as reporting a story as spam. When you click to hide a story you also have the option to report the content. Stories that include scams, or deliberately misleading news, are reported two and a half times more often than links to other news stories.
What’s the update?
To reduce the number of these types of posts, News Feed will take into account when many people flag a post as false. News Feed will also take into account when many people choose to delete posts. This means a post with a link to an article that many people have reported as a hoax or chosen to delete will get reduced distribution in News Feed. This update will apply to posts including links, photos, videos and status updates.
Posts that receive lots of reports will be annotated with a message warning people that many others on Facebook have reported it.
Will this affect my Page?
We’ve found from testing that people tend not to report satirical content intended to be humorous, or content that is clearly labeled as satire. This type of content should not be affected by this update.
The vast majority of publishers on Facebook will not be impacted by this update. A small set of publishers who are frequently posting hoaxes and scams will see their distribution decrease.

This week, real estate appraiser, Curbed graph guru, blogger, and podcaster Jonathan Miller charts 120,000 Manhattan sales.
Finally, after nearly two years of referring to the $88 million sale at 15 Central Park West as the "highest Manhattan residential sale on record," we get a change of scenery. A new record was set with the $100.47 million sale of the penthouse at One57 recorded late last week. Timing is everything, although, in this case timing really wasn't. I believe this sale went to contract in 2012, which would be shortly after the $88 million sale went to contract in December 2011 and closed in early 2012. While these super luxury sales are more of a circus sideshow and have little, if anything, to do with the vast majority of the Manhattan housing market, I find them surreal to consider.
To mark the occasion, I thought I'd update "the tallest chart in the history of Manhattan real estate," which I presented on Curbed after the $88 million sale closed in 2012.

Kinda reminds me of Chinese construction sites with bamboo scaffolding.
Singapore-based design firm PRODUCE were asked by Woon Tai Ho, an art collector and critic, to create a unique piece of furniture that would allow him to live within a piece of art.
Having given PRODUCE freedom to design the piece, they came up with a single piece of furniture made from steel rods that encompasses a bookshelf, a wardrobe, a table, a wine rack, and is also a sculpture.

The phrase "shitting myself in fear" gets tossed around a lot these days, but it's not often that an amateur YouTube video can adequately convey the mortal terror that's always lurking out there on the periphery of our lives, ready to barrel down on us any second like a double tractor trailer skidding helplessly in our direction. Here then is a remarkable white-knuckle video captured by a driver who was stopped by black ice on the NJ Turnpike over the weekend.
Miraculously, no one was seriously injured in the crash. The video was taken by a YouTube user with nerves of steel called "MrLegolize," and before you condemn him for driving away without helping the truck driver, he says in the YouTube comments, "Once I turned off camera, I called in 911 and reported the accident. After that I came to the truck and the rest of the cars to verify they were alright. After arrival of NJ State Trooper and his dismissal confirming that he does not require my presence, I left the scene."
MrLegolize explains that he pulled over near Exit 9 because a number of trucks were pulled over due to the icy conditions. He tells ABC 7, "It was real bizarre to see, so I decided to actually pull out my phone, and at that point, I heard some noise in the back, and turned around and basically had the camera rolling the whole time... I realized that there was really nothing else I could do but hope for divine intervention."
In an "exclusive" interview with CBS2, MrLeoglize also calls the truck driver a hero, explaining, "I really wanted to actually record his heroic act - what he was trying to do — because he was trying to save us all."

Bia Restaurant, 23-10 Jackson Ave.

A Vietnamese restaurant is opening by the Court Square train station in the location that was previously occupied by Quiznos.
Bia Restaurant, which currently has a location in Williamsburg, is expected to open at 23-10 Jackson Ave. in April, according to owner Hoan Quan.
The restaurant is across the street from MoMA PS 1 and is a block away from the old 5Pointz building.
Quan said the menu will be very similar to what’s being offered at the Williamsburg location (67 S 6th St), which includes dim sum, noodles, pho and banh mi sandwiches
The Court Square restaurant will be 2,000 sqf., with room for 60 chairs and space for 9 seats at the bar.
Quan went before Community Board 2 last night seeking a full liquor license. He was approved.
The board gave Quan permission to open until 1 am on weekends and until midnight on weeknights.

Google's Translate app has been updated for both iOS and Android and it's better than ever. First off, Word Lens -- which lets you use your camera to snap a photo of text (like signs in a foreign country) and get a translation in 36 languages -- is now available directly within the app. However, going a step further, Word Lens can now translate text instantly -- simply point your camera at a sign or text and you’ll see the translated text almost instantly overlaid on your screen, whether you have an Internet or data connection or not. Currently, the "instant" translation feature is limited to English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, but Google is currently working to expand to additional languages.
More importantly than Word Lens, however, may be the ability to have a conversation across languages with the app. Now, when talking to someone in an unfamiliar language, users can simply tap their mic, speak, and then tap the mic again and the app will automatically recognize which of the two languages are being spoken, letting you have a more fluid conversation. Then, for the rest of the conversation, you won’t need to tap the mic again -- it'll simply be ready to continue translating as you need it.

"Let's just start off by saying this was the scariest helicopter 'photo mission' of my career," writes photographer Vincent Laforet on Storehouse. But, as evidenced by these jaw-dropping photos, it was "the most beautiful" mission, too. Laforet's helicopter took him 7,500 feet above Manhattan, "an unusually high altitude," so he could "capture the lines that are formed by the streets of New York at night." One pilot refused to do it, saying that "helicopters are not meant to live in that realm"they were so high that they were above air traffic from all three New York airportsbut it was worth it. "These are some of the most unique images that I have ever photographed of New York City in nearly two decades," writes Laforet. And now we can enjoy the view from solid ground.

The Jets have officially hired Todd Bowles as their new head coach, the team announced.
The Jets reportedly gave Bowles a four-year deal (Schefter, Jan. 13).
Bowles had his second interview on Tuesday night, meeting with new GM Mike Maccagnan. He interviewed with the team first on January 7.
“I am proud to welcome Todd Bowles as the head coach of the New York Jets,” Jets owner Woody Johnson said. “From entering the league as an undrafted free agent in Washington to becoming a very successful coordinator in Arizona, Todd has earned everything he has achieved. He is a hard-working and dedicated leader who has garnered the respect of players and coaches. I am confident that Todd and Mike Maccagnan are the right combination to lead this team.”
When Maccagnan was hired as general manager on Tuesday, the team said that the GM and head coach would both report directly to owner Woody Johnson. The two would also collaborate on the roster, with Maccagnan having final say. Bowles will reportedly have the final call on who plays in games.
“It’s an honor and privilege to coach the Jets,” Bowles said. “I want to thank Mr. Johnson and Mike Maccagnan for this opportunity. I can’t help but be humbled by the chance to coach this team. I am going to do everything I can to build a consistent winner.”
Bowles was most recently the Arizona Cardinals’ defensive coordinator, a position he was in since January 2013.
Before the Cardinals, Bowles worked as the Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator after being appointed to that position in October 2012. He had been the team’s secondary coach. From 2008-2011, Bowles worked with the Miami Dolphins, where he served as the secondary coach and assistant head coach. He was an interim coach for three games in 2011, going 2-1.
Bowles, 51, is from Elizabeth, N.J. He played at Temple University and with the Washington Redskins as a defensive back, winning a Super Bowl ring in 1988.

While the reporting structure is somewhat odd, I think we understand where it comes from. Rex Ryan pushed Mike Tannenbaum into some deals (ie Santonio Holmes in 2011) that in retrospect might not have been best for the team. Conversely, John Idzik exerted his influence which manifested itself (ie starting quarterback, playing time decisions) on game day. So, with this structure in place between two people who know each other well and are likely to trust each other, it shouldn’t be an issue and sets the expectation properly with the media and their reporting going forward.I wanted Dan Quinn badly, and I think Quinn will be a good coach, but then again I also lamented when the Jets lost out on Jim Schwartz in favor of Rex Ryan. So in the end …
We think Bowles is a great hire, underscored by his rumored hiring of Chan Gailey as his offensive coordinator. It is just that his hiring was something of a surprise. The team seemed to be shuffling along for the better part of a week, maybe in an attempt to stall for Dan Quinn, but things seemed to come together quickly on Tuesday with Bowles and Maccagnan.
Bowles grew up in New Jersey, played football at Temple (Mo & JJ!) and worked for the Jets back in 2000. Bowles maximizes the most out of his talent defensively, which we think is a good thing in terms of carrying the roster’s talent forward into the new regime.
Also, Bowles is a known commodity to both Charlie Casserley and Maccagnan, as it was Washington who drafted him.
While this process is always hard and will bring some major changes, momentum stalls and pointed fingers from other fanbases, I am excited about the results of the GM and coaching search and think fans should be as well.

One of the things I love most about New York City’s prettiest subway station is the way it unexpectedly appears out of nowhere. As you’re heading east along 180th Street toward Morris Park Ave in the Bronx, look north…
…and all of a sudden, you’ll see a red terra cotta-roofed tower rise into view just above a rock ledge. Continue around to the front…
…and the American flag is about the only indication that you haven’t been magically transported to a train station in Italy.
This is the East 180th Street 2/5 station, and for my money, it’s hands down the prettiest subway station entrance in New York.
Built in 1912, this was originally the administration building for the New York, Westchester and Boston Railway, which offered service between White Plains, Port Chester, and East 132nd Street (the inclusion of Boston seems to have been a flat-out lie). Below, the station in 1928:
Designed to resemble an Italian villa complete with clay-tiled roof, the three-story stucco facade centers on a large clock…

I love the decorative balconies and arched windows found on each of the 4-story towers flanking the central section:
The railway never turned a profit, and finally went out of business in 1937. It was purchased by the city in 1940 and integrated into the IRT at East 180th Street. Below, the building’s loggia and plaza:

From the side, I love how the outcroppings give the station the illusion of being perched atop a rocky cliff.
If the building looks immaculate, it’s not by accident. In 2013, the MTA completed a 2-year, $66.5 million dollar restoration of the station inside and out. In particular, I love the gorgeous mosaics by artist Luisa Caldwell…
Inspired by the station’s proximity to the Bronx Zoo and New York Botanical Garden, three can be seen as you first enter the station: an elephant picking flowers…
