Seriously, this is totally a secret, and only you and I know about it. There’s a wall of shelves in this house, designed by DeForest Architects, that are actually a hidden door.
Wow — this freestanding home at 72-20 Harrow Street, in Forest Hills Gardens, is really stunning. Upon first glance we thought this was an older Tudor home, but it was actually built in 2006. So you get the unique outdoor patio on the second floor (which we think was extremely well integrated into the house design) as well as all modern everything. The interior looks more like a mountain chalet than a Forest Hills Tudor, so that won’t float everyone’s boat. We don’t think tile floors have any business being in a living room, and it’s not like there’s wood hiding underneath. But overall it’s a lovely home with well-done, upscale interiors.
There are four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a grand total of 5,096 square feet. The asking price? It ain’t low, at $3,289,000. See interior photos after the jump.

You can get anything that you want, at Danny’s newd Restaurant
Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group has announced that they will be opening their first-ever free-standing restaurant in Queens in the former Waterfront Crab House location. According to the press release, it will specialize in the cuisine of Queens, that is to say an international smorgasbord . “You name it, we’ll have it” Mr. Meyer is quoted, “Samosas, souvlaki, shark-fin soup and sturgeon. Bibimpap, mamaliga, larb and lemon ices.” In addition, expect more traditional ethnic cuisine like chicken parm, tacos, and General Tso’s. Even the purists will be happy, as pizza and burgers will be on the menu too.
The restaurant is conceived of for those from Manhattan who tend to be intimidated about making forays into Queens. Given the location, they will be able to dip their toes into the borough without it being too onerous logistically or on their psyche. “Hopefully they’re so happy with our renowned hospitality, that they feel no need to venture further, except maybe to Citi Field.”
In yet another first for the venerable Meyer, he plans on installing a men’s club on the second floor. “Let’s face it, the first thing most Manhattanites see when getting off the 59th Street Bridge are the massive strip clubs of Queens Boulevard. We’re not looking to alter that mindset, plus it’s definitely within the purview of hospitality, our corporate mantra.”
If successful, they plan on taking the dual concept worldwide to culturally timid cities such as Las Vegas, Dubai, and Astana, because “if you can fake it here, you can fake it anywhere.” The new restaurant will be called JiggleJoint.

It seemed easy enough. To show how much wool a sheep grows in a season just shear off half the wool and have the sheep stand sideways.
Knowing
nothing about sheep I figured I’d have this picture done in an
afternoon. Here’s the plan: find a sheep that is wearing one season’s
wool. Hire a good shearer. Give the sheep half a haircut.
The
shearing season had started early in New Zealand. But I was determined
to find a few sheep that hadn’t been fleeced. We drove and drove. It
seemed we had landed on an island populated by nearly naked sheep.
Then…
"There…on the right…in that yard." I was jubilant.
Robin Kidd, the "gun" (New Zealand parlance for "the best") shearer, who
had already determined that I was an obsessed lunatic, groaned at the
sight of 5 very over-weight sheep that looked like they had been
sleeping in ill-fitting pajamas for a year.
I banged on the front
door of the little farmhouse and explained my mission to the woman who
owned the sheep. To my amazement, she believed me.
Having no dog,
four of us chased the fat, bobbing sheep around the yard finally
bringing them down with flying tackles. It took all four of us to lift
each sheep onto the back of a pickup.
The shed was quiet. The five
sheep huddled in the corner of the shearing pen looking like they would
very much like to leave. Robin pulled one of them upright so that it
was sitting on its rump. The sheep slumped into a catatonic state. Robin
grasped the shears then hesitated. He had removed so many sheep jackets
as whole fleeces he couldn’t figure out the moves he needed to do just
half. He pecked away with the shears. Dirty wool fell all around. Done.
He released the sheep. It bounded to its feet, swayed a bit, then
toppled toward the still woolly side. The now unbalanced sheep lay
helpless on its side, feet bicycling in the air.
The next try was
better planned. A grazier (Australian for sheep farmer) near Melbourne
agreed to hold, unshorn, 100 “hogs” until I arrived. (A one year old
sheep is called a hog…Go figure!) We converted the sheep shed to a
studio. I had painted a huge canvas with waterproof paint (easier to
clean up) to use as a seamless background. 99 young Merinos tried to
hide behind the one in front as I went about the task of choosing which
would become famous that day. I invited the cutest, cleanest hog to
visit the well-lit studio to be half undressed for all the world to see.
Shearing
sheds are hot, dusty and, if the truth be known, a bit bloody. Electric
shears are similar to those that barbers use but a lot courser. Under
all that wool Marino sheep have loose, wrinkled, ever so soft, and
sensitive skin. When shearing a mob of several thousand sheep, shearers
don’t waste much time avoiding wrinkles. Otherwise clean, white, nearly
naked sheep are spotted with little red shaving nicks. I couldn’t very
well put a half shorn sheep with bloody shaving nicks in font of 40
million National Geographic readers.
As a result the first sheep
never achieved stardom. Nor did the second, the 19th or the 27th. We
tried shearing them front to back as well as side-to-side. The well
planned, half day photo shoot was trying the patience of not only the
generous grazier but of the 12 motorcycle shepherds who locked arms to
create a human fence around each sheep while I attempted to make a
picture.
In the end it was sheep number 30 that became a star.
Remembering how my dad temporarily patched his shaving nicks with a bit
of tissue (I now use an electric shaver) I took a wad of wool, patched
the nick on number 30’s neck and got set up to make a picture. The
motorcycle shepherds locked arms. The camera shutter clattered and
72,000 watt-seconds of flash bathed number 30 in light with a happy
popping sound. The picture ran as the lead shot in my National
Geographic article about wool. Number 30 went on to hire an agent and is
looking for new bookings.

Amazon has announced the launch of their highly anticipated Home Services web-based application. Presented as an online marketplace for industry professionals that can help you install, maintain and implement your various household purchases, the services offered are as varied as what you might expect to find on Amazon itself. From slightly mundane chores such as TV installation and routine cleaning to something as outlandish as hiring a silk aerialist, over 700 professional services are available and covered by Amazon's Happiness Guarantee. The company stated in their press release that, "In less than 60 seconds, customers can now browse, purchase and schedule hundreds of professional services" from a database of certified industry men and women that have been personally invited by Amazon, vetted accordingly and in possession of the relevant trade licenses.
Currently available across most of the US, Amazon Home Services will match lower advertised prices for professionals and their services listed within its application and has roughly 2.4 million 'pre-packaged' plans that can be added to your cart. Considering Amazon started as an online book store some 20 years ago, they have come a long way and once again proven why they are one of the world's leading e-commerce platforms.
A coyote has taken up residence in Long Island City and has been stuck on the roof of LIC Bar all day.
The tenants who live above LIC Bar discovered the wild animal this morning when they saw it from their back window, according to Brian Porter, the owner of the bar.
Porter said that they think the coyote entered via a broken window from the old Paragon Paint building and couldn’t get back inside the old building.
He said the animal look in good condition. “It looked well fed, it wasn’t a scrawny thing.”
Porter said that two police officers from the precinct have come to the scene and have called in animal control. The officers and Porter were surprised to find the coyote since they haven’t seen one in Long Island City before.
Matt Quigley, with Plaxall, took photos from his building and said it’s been a very long time that a coyote has been spotted in Long Island City.
A veterinarian from Citi Vet went up on the roof to see whether it was a wild dog or a coyote. She climbed up and took a look and made a hasty retreat.

Thursday's explosion in the East Village devastated three favorite neighborhood institutions, all in a row along a short stretch of sidewalk spanning 121-123 Second Avenue. Sushi Park—where the explosion occurred in the basement— Pommes Frites and Sam's Deli were destroyed in the impact and resulting blaze. The small area was like a microcosm of New York, writes the New York Times—a Japanese restaurant run by a Korean family, a Belgian fries shop run by a Bronx woman, and a bodega that's been run by one Indian family for close to 20 years.
Hyeonil Kim, the owner of Sushi Park, spoke recently of his missing employee, Moises Ismael Locon Yac, and three other staff members who were injured, one critically. The Sushi Park owner and his employees have reportedly been searching NYC hospitals looking for Locon.
Customers are taking to social media to express their condolences and thank the three cheap eats havens. "You were my favorite Friday night haunt," Caitlin McDonald wrote on Sushi Park's Facebook wall. The restaurant was well-known in the area for its half-price specials. "You made so many weeks better with your delicious food and kind staff."
"Their sandwiches were great, but the guys behind the counter and the owner were even better," wrote Christina C. about Sam's Deli on Yelp. "I had broken my leg and couldn't work at one point, and they gave me credit until I could pay them back. You don't see that level of kindness in this city often." Sam's Deli was run by the whole extended family, and Sarbjit Bring is anxious about how they will now pay for her 19 and 22-year-old sons' education. "I have no money... everything is my store," she told the Times.
Pommes Frites, after sending an eerie final tweet before the explosion, updated their Facebook page on Thursday afternoon to address the tragedy and send well-wishes to the injured and their families. "You are a treasured part of the East Village," wrote customer Sasha Lloyd. "Heartbroken for you, your staff, and all those affected by this terrible accident."
The much-loved Belgian fry shop plans to re-open "someday soon"—there's no word yet on the future of Sushi Park and Sam's Deli.

Checks should be made out to the NYC Mayor's Fund with a note that they are earmarked for the East Village Collapse. In kind donations are not being accepted at this time.

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming Hollywood action-adventure disaster film, San Andreas. The film follows a Los Angeles rescue-helicopter pilot (played by Dwayne Johnson) as he and his wife travel to San Francisco searching for their estranged daughter after a devastating magnitude 9 earthquake in California, triggered by the San Andreas fault. This will be Johnson's second time working with director Brad Peyton, as they had previously collaborated for the hugely successful sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth, titled Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. Alongside The Rock, other major stars in the film include Kylie Minogue, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario and Paul Giamatti.
