Morning Advantage: A World Without Work

by Dana Rousmaniere
Lindsaycdavison

1. scary robots
2. Go canada start up market!

In this three-part series from The Associated Press (featured here on the The Washington Post website), experts warn that if you add up all the jobs that technology (like robots) can take, the world is going to see unemployment on a scale that we haven’t begun to imagine. The article quotes software entrepreneur and author Martin Ford, who foresees a computer-dominated economy with 75 percent unemployment before the end of this century, and questions whether human beings will have anything left to do as robot and computers get smarter.

According to former U.S. Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers, also quoted in the article, the world is moving in that direction. In a speech last year, he declared that the biggest economic issue of the future would not be the federal debt or competition from China but “the dramatic transformations that technology is bringing about.”

TAKE OFF, EH?

Want to Start a Startup? Move to Canada. (Big Think)

The Canadian government recently announced that on April 1, it will launch a Start-Up Visa program to "link international entrepreneurs with private sector organizations...that have experience working with startups to provide essential resources." People who qualify for the program will get permanent resident status and may eventually qualify for immigration. Canadian government minister Jason Kenney says that the program “underscores our commitment to supporting innovation and entrepreneurship in the Canadian labour market." The criteria for qualifying for the program will be published sometime this spring.

'FOUNDER' IS A STATE OF MIND

What to Do If Your Startup Needs a Pro CEO Who Has a Founder Mentality (Quartz)

The current conventional thinking about internet companies is that they're different from other types of startups, because they need to generate lots of new and exciting ideas to stay alive. Thus, the old wisdom about how founders should give way to "professional" CEOs is often said not to apply. But Reid Hoffman, cofounder of LinkedIn, realized a few years ago that being CEO wasn't for him. He didn't like running weekly staff meetings. He wanted to use his time solving intellectual challenges, not conducting debates about which employees should be promoted. His solution was to bring in a CEO who could function as a co-founder, "not as an adult supervisor." For companies like LinkedIn, the professional CEO also has to have the knowledge, moral authority, and commitment of a founder, he says. — Andy O'Connell

Getting to know Paris

by noreply@blogger.com (Lost In Cheeseland)
Lindsaycdavison

SO CUTE

Is it the cobblestone streets, hidden passageways, spangled shop windows and ambrosial scents of just-baked confections that lead us to believe we know Paris so well? Or is it the city's snail-shaped layout we learned through maps, its iconic landmarks and distinct demographics that help us ascertain its character?

For their 2013 New Year's card, Havas Worldwide stripped away specifics and renounced the romanticized standard to offer a journey through each of Paris's neighborhoods by way of deft symbols and illustrations. The result is nothing short of ingenious. Enjoy the video!

A Day of Soaking

by Kara Fox

The Dotsho, or the traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath, is Bhutan's one and only spa treatment. The bath, enjoyed by Bhutanese of all ages and classes, has been used for centuries as a medicinal soak. Many locals trust the healing properties of the bath, believing that the dotsho will cure most ailments -- from tired, pained joints to serious medical conditions. In addition to its medicinal benefits, the dotsho also brings families and friends together; the communal culture of soaking in a Bhutanese hot stone bath is much like the experience of the Japanese onsen or the Russian banya. In the past, the primary function of the dotsho was for personal use, however with the influx of tourism to the kingdom over the last decade,  the dotsho have started to provide many local families a means of extra income, catering to outside guests and tourists at a cost.
Above, a newly erected hot stone bath house, the Rimpung Valley View Dotsho, is seen. The Rimpung Valley View Dotsho is a family operation that sits below Paro town's Rimpung Dzong, the administrative and monastic center of the district. The operation serves as a hot stone bath house where guests can spend a spa day soaking in the tubs, enjoying views of the Paro valley, and eating homecooked meals for the USD equivalent of $12.

Stones from the Paro Chuu, the river that cuts through the valley, are heated over a wooden fire for at least two hours in preparation for the bath. Once the stones become sufficiently hot, they are added to a tub of water. The heat cracks open the stones, allowing mineral content to rush into the water once submerged.
Ugyen Chomo, one owner of the bath house, adds the doh, or river stones, to the water. Once the doh reach the water, they not only heat the bath, but they also add mineral content to the treatment.
Ugyen's family sits inside one of the four bath tubs. Grandfather and grandmother soak themselves and scrub one another inside the bath while the children amuse themselves. The bath is partitioned in a way so that the doh can not enter the main bathing vessel, protecting each body from contact with the scalding stones.
The bathhouse sits on top of the family's apple orchard. A beautiful view of the Paro valley can be seen from the dotsho's windows.
Ugyen's sister Tenzin brings a large pot of naja, or milk tea to the sitting room located inside the complex. The room serves as a waiting area in between baths, as well as a dining space.
After finishing the first round of soaking, Ugyen's mother and father cool off in the sitting room.
Before enjoying another round of soaking, lunch is served. Above, a home cooked plate of red rice and saag datse (spinach fry with cheese and chilis) is shown. The spinach and rice are both grown on the property.
The datse for all the curries are made fresh: the family's cows provide the milk....
...and the cheese is made by grandmother in the kitchen below the bathhouse.
After eating, grandmother and child enjoy a mid-day nap.
To celebrate the opening of their new bathhouse, the family moves outside to take a family portrait.
Later, it's Ugyen's husband, Lobzang's turn to heat the stones and prepare the bath.
While Lobzang prepares the bath, Ugyen changes back at home into something more suitable for soaking.
Nambda, having already sat for a few hours with his grandmother in one dotsho, enjoys another dip with mother Ugyen.

In addition to food, the family also bottles local fruit infused wine and home fermented ara and chang (rice and barley spirits). After finishing the last baths, everyone sits down to some local brews.
After the final soak of the day, the children stay warm by resting under Chinese plush blankets. Choying, aged 2, sips on local plum wine while brother Namda, 6, plays hide and seek.
As the sun sets over the valley,  the stones cool and the family moves back to their house below with warm bodies and full bellies.

Herb Lester Maps

by Wayfare

I recently happened across Herb Lester, a small company in London that produces the most beautiful illustrated maps of cities around the world. Each map is a unique, little collectable that is focused on exploring specific themes and aspects of a particular place, like Where the Sidewalk Ends, Austin On The Hoof, How To Find Old LA, and The William Brown Project.

The guides are written and researched in-house and each one is designed and illustrated by a different illustrator, particularly chosen for the subject. Current guides include a few to London, as well as Glasgow, Paris, Berlin, Austin, Chicago and New York. They recently launched one for San Francisco!

Distinctively San Francisco

This packing tape is also pretty fantastic.

Craft Beer Brewed in Paris: La Brasserie de la Goutte D’Or

by Elise Marafioti
Lindsaycdavison

@asdavison

One of my favorite things about visiting Paris is taking as much of it as possible back home with me. After filling a suitcase with gifts, souvenirs, and an assortment of my favorite products collected at Monoprix, I always squeeze in a bottle or two of good French wine. But the next time I visit my favorite city, I will be swapping out the wine for something a bit more Parisian: beer.

Yes, that’s right. Parisian beer! Brewed, bottled and sold at the newly opened Brasserie de la Goutte d’Or, the first serious microbrewery Paris has seen in recent history. These new brews of la Goutte d’Or are a unique and exciting blend of owner Thierry Roche’s passion for artisanal beer and love of the neighborhood where he lives and brews.

The Goutte d’Or is a bustling neighborhood cradled by Barbès-Rochechouart and La Chapelle as it runs north past Château Rouge along the eastern slope of Montmartre. It is home to a working class community of predominantly North and West African immigrants, a vibrant quartier commonly referred to as Little Africa.

At the heart of the neighborhood is the Marché Dejean, a busy street market where the sights and smells might make you forget that you are in the middle of Paris. Crowds of locals, sprinkled with colorful dashikis and skullcaps, shop for all of the spices and ingredients you probably won’t find in most traditional French restaurants. The Marché Dejean is also where Thierry finds most of his ingredients for his neighborhood brews, including ginger, hibiscus, hot pepper, and dates.

Each of Thierry’s handcrafted brews is bottled with a colorful label that gives a proud shout-out to its locale. Château Rouge, a red IPA with spicy notes, was named for the busy metro stop that opens out onto the Marché Dejean; Léon, a dark brew with hints of ginger, references some local businesses found on the nearby street the beer was named after. For Christmas this year, the Brasserie is promoting its Charbonnière, a slightly spiced and peaty amber beer at 7.5% alcohol, named for the street that draws you into la Goutte d’Or as you venture off the Boulevard de la Chapelle.

Since opening its doors in October, the Brasserie has been met with great enthusiasm and curiosity. As Thierry explained to me during a quick break from his non-stop labor of love, the problem in France is not that there has been a lack of interest in good beer, but rather there has simply been a lack of good supply.

The growing popularity of the many beer shops that have recently popped up throughout the nation’s capital, such as People’s Drug Store, shows that there is indeed a substantial market for artisanal beer in Paris. Thierry financed his dream project in part thanks to Ulule, a Paris-based online crowdfunding website, proving that Parisians are seriously thirsty for local craft beer in particular.

Because you can’t find the brews of the Goutte d’Or outside of the 18th arrondissement just yet, stop by the brewery and have Thierry personally pour you un goût of his latest brew to savor and maybe learn a bit more about the exciting neighborhood it came from. If you are looking to take a piece of Paris home with you after your next visit, I can think of no better way than by picking up a few bottles of the intoxicating flavors of La Goutte d’Or.

Brasserie de la Goutte d’Or
28, rue de la Goutte d’Or, 75018
Métro: Barbès-Rochechouart
Open (December 2012): Thursdays, 5-7pm, Fridays & Saturdays, 2-7pm, Sundays 4-7pm

To start this new week, I would like to show you around New York apartment of stylist Donna Karan. It is always interesting to see the designers homes because you can discover aspects of their personality that you didn't know. Here in her beautiful apartment Donna Karan wanted to create a refuge, a haven of peace and meditation. A calm atmosphere emanates from this interior, there's even a spa which makes it a true place to relax. Minimalist décor with a contrast of black and white, many works of art such as the colorful painting on the dark wall of the first picture and fresh flowers everywhere.

Review: Joe Fresh Children's Clothing

by Ashleigh
Lindsaycdavison

@shannon for next time you are in canadia shopping for declan

I LOVE their skinny jeans! I receive this "complement" in reference to my toddlers' pants often when we are out and about. Most of their pint-sized skinny jeans are made by Joe Fresh.

Joe Fresh is a Canadian adult and children's fashion brand created by Joe Mimran, the co-founder of Club Monaco. Most of Joe's stores are conveniently in or attached to popular Canadian grocery stores, Loblaws, making shopping a snap, especially with kids in tow! They also recently opened a US flagship store in NYC on Fifth Avenue.

As all of you parents know, young kids fly through clothes, sometimes wearing them only a handful of times. That $80 0-3 month-sized dress was adorable that ONE time your infant daughter wore it! We all know what happens when we hold up that adorable little [$39] shirt and [$49] sweater vest with a [$19] matching tie for our 1-year old. Logic and rational thought are thrown out the window and due to our guilt, our young son ends up dressed to the nines while playing in the mud at the park.

Teagan and Quinn have clothing made by many different companies in a variety of different price ranges. I will admit to being more than disappointed after spending too much on an adorable sweater, made by an unnamed company, only to realize how cheaply it had been made. While picking out their outfits this morning, I noted that they have an increasingly large amount of clothing from Joe Fresh. This is no fluke.

Not once have I had to throw out a piece of Joe Fresh clothing. Not only do their clothes stand up to the toddler durability test, they are also stylish. Remember the skinny jeans?! What is even better about Joe's children's clothes are the reasonable prices. I've learned quickly that spending a fortune on a pair of pants that the girls will only wear for a few months is crazy. I can outfit my girls in adorable and well-made clothing without having to remortgage my house.

Thank you Joe!

Here are the girls sporting some of Joe's fantastic outfits:
(oh and if you have a boy, boys clothes are equally adorable!)

Teagan sports Joe's yoga pants and waffle shirt

Patti Smith to Young Artists: Don't Come to NYC:

No really, don’t come. Apparently, there was a cheap time to live in New York city called the 70s and 80s in which it was magical and crack was rampant. Now go somewhere else like Detroit and watch a city burn.

There is absolutely no way to live here at all. Don’t try it. Take the advice of an old lady who still lives in NYC.
