Complete Japanese Game Boy Advance Cartridge Set

by Link

Japanese Game Boy Advance Cartridge Set

This is pretty awesome, the complete 795 game set. At just over $7.00 a cart it may be a bit expensive, but definitely not insane - buyer has OBO too.

Fun fact: Final Fantasy VI Advance was the last Japanese GBA game, released November 2006, the last Nintendo-published game for the system.

MoMA adds video games to permanent collection

by Jason Kottke

MoMA has acquired 14 video games for their permanent collection. Presumably they paid more than MSRP?

We are very proud to announce that MoMA has acquired a selection of 14 video games, the seedbed for an initial wish list of about 40 to be acquired in the near future, as well as for a new category of artworks in MoMA's collection that we hope will grow in the future. This initial group, which we will install for your delight in the Museum's Philip Johnson Galleries in March 2013, features...

The games include Tetris, Passage, The Sims, and Katamari Damacy. No Nintendo games on that list, probably due to ongoing negotiations with Nintendo.

Charles Babbage's difference engine captured in gigapixel images

by Aaron Souppouris
Photo

A re-construction of Charles Babbage's difference engine, an early mechanical computer, has been captured in precise detail using gigapixel imagery. Babbage, who essentially invented the mechanical computer in the nineteenth century, was unable to execute on his ideas during his lifetime, but scientists successfully reconstructed his second design for the difference engine in the late eighties. Work began to build Babbage's magnus opus, the highly-complex analytical engine, last year.

Today, two difference engines exist, one in Babbage's London and the other at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. It's difficult to grasp the scale of the giant machine through the images, so we've included a video of it in action...

Sand castle artist Calvin Seibert manages to construct nearly impossible shapes from one of the world’s most delicate mediums. While Colossal has seen its fair share of art made with sand I’ve never seen anything so perfectly angular and geometric. See much more of his work over on Flickr. (via fasels suppe)

R. Kelly Writing "Trapped in the Closet" Book

by Carrie Battan and Evan Minsker

R. Kelly Writing "Trapped in the Closet" Book

If 32 new chapters of R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet" are not enough, and you're left awake in bed at night wondering what these characters were up to before we met them, fear not: R. Kelly has told Fast Company (via Vulture) that he's working on a "Trapped in the Closet" book.

The 'Trapped in the Closet' book you see as an infomercial in the new chapters is a book that's on its way, that I'm writing," Kells told Fast Company. I know where Chuck was before he met Rufus. I know what was happening before they actually met. I know what happened with Bridget and the midget and everybody else's situation. So I feel like the fans have supported 'Trapped in the Closet,' so I feel like it's time to introduce them to these people before what they saw. It's the prequel meeting the sequel. You'll get to find out a lot of things you don't know, or that you can’t know, unless you read the book or unless I tell you-- so I decided to do a book on it." If you recall, this isn't his first book-writing adventure-- he did the incredibly titled autobiography Soula Coaster last year.

And don't forget: there's also a Broadway musical in the works.

But for now, we bring you the latest new "Trapped" chapter from IFC. In Chapter 28, we've finally left the therapist's office and are spending some time with Randolph (aka R. Kelly in a fat suit and old man makeup) and Rosie (the nosy neighbor). For this entire chapter, Randolph sings about his penis. Strap in.

IFC will be airing a new chapter each day. Read our account of the premiere of the new chapters of "Trapped in the Closet" here.

Dutch artist modifies a pinball machine to make art prints

by Laura June
Pinball modified

Dutch Graphic designer Sam van Doorn has modified a pinball machine so that it uses lithographic ink to make art prints. Calling his machine STYN, the device makes messy modern art on poster board with six flippers and the ball. van Doorn doesn't call the resulting works art, rather he thinks of them as design pieces which are the product of "fun and play." The modified pinball machine was a part of van Doorn's graduation project. The machine itself will be appearing at different parties where people can use it to make their own designs, but posters are also available for sale in van Doorn's web shoot for 50 Euros.

'Prince of Persia' Creator Documents The Making Of Original 'Karateka'

by Charles Webb

Back in 1982, when developing the punishing martial arts classic "Karateka," famed designer Jordan Mechner kept a journal of his working experience. And now he's put all of those thoughts and memories together into an eBook, "The Making of Karateka."

Mechner, whose remake of "Karateka" was released on consoles in November, is dropping the DRM-free eBook in time with the Steam release of the remake developed by Liquid Entertainment. Mechner describes it as "a time-capsule record of that early Apple II era, and a window into the maniacal brain of a teenager obsessed with “breaking in” to making games and/or movies," an interesting but not unexpected direction in the chronicle of a game that had, at the time, surprisingly cinematic aspirations.

Mechner was 18 at the time of the game's release, and would likely have been primed by the tail end of the second generation of martial arts movies made in the West as Hollywood (and beyond) attempted to capitalize on the tremendous success of the Hong Kong kung fu flicks from 10 years prior.

Out of Print was an installation made for the London Design...

Out of Print was an installation made for the London Design Festival 2012. As respond to the the growth of digital media and this all data we suffer, they installed a letterpress and an online application that allowed users to generate seemingly random headlines.

These headlines were printed using a custom-built letterpress, forming a growing collection exhibited as part of the installation.

Both the software and the print process produce unexpected results. The distortions and juxtapositions in language generate headlines that are profound and confusing in equal measure; not unlike our evolving relationship with digital media.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the complete GBA set we posted last week, so here are some more great photos of Japanese cartridges. Maniackers Design shot these for its Fammite Ittomo show over the summer. I’ll miss being able to dump out and show off collections like these, in our digital-only future.

Below the Boat, Regional Wooden Charts Showing Underwater Topographical Features

by Justin Page

Great Lakes

It’s a door into another world (one which, quite literally, lies below the boat).

Robbie and Kara Johnson are behind Below the Boat, a website that specializes in wonderful laser-cut and layered wooden charts showing underwater topographical features (also known as bathymetric charts). Regions in the West Coast, Interior Lakes and East Coast are available to purchase online.

Starting with a bathymetric chart (the underwater equivalent of a topographic map), the contours are laser-cut into sheets of Baltic birch and glued together to create a powerful visual depth. Select layers are hand-colored blue so it’s easy to discern land from water, major byways are etched into the land, the whole thing’s framed in a custom, solid-wood frame and protected seamlessly with a sheet of durable, ultra-transparent Plexiglas.

The result is stunning. It lifts the surface of the water back like a veil, exposing the often-overlooked, under-explored, awe-inspiring world that lies below. To those familiar with the floor of the ocean or the bed of a lake, it’s a beautiful reminder of the deep channels, sharp drop-offs, and mountainous landscapes that are hidden from normal view. To the uninitiated, it’s wonderfully eye-opening; as though the world suddenly took on a fourth dimension.

Starbucks begins selling Square card readers at 7,000 coffee shops

by Donald Melanson

It wasn't too much of a surprise to see Starbucks begin accepting Square payments at many of its coffee shops last year, but the company's latest expansion of that partnership is a bit more unexpected. It's announced today that it has started selling Square card readers at some 7,000 locations across the US, letting customers pick up a means to accept credit card payments along with their beverage of choice. That's only the latest retail deal for Square following partnerships with Apple, Walmart, Best Buy and others, and as with those the readers themselves are essentially free -- you pay $10 up front, but get a $10 credit that you can redeem after you activate your account.

“You can allude to him. You can play Joe Biden. But I don’t want to hear the man’s voice. I don’t want to hear him. I don’t want to know about him. You want that information? Go any place else. There’s thousands of outlets, you can have all the information you want. I am not talking about that man.”

- Glenn Beck • Starting his new year off, in the typical style of those of us prone to trap resolutions, by making a promise he simply cannot keep. Beck explained to his co-host that he’d no longer allow any mention of President Obama by the staff of his show. Referring to him namelessly, or as “the President,” would be viewed on a “case-by-case” basis, though Beck himself prefers “that man.” He also pledged not to play any presidential audio on his show — who’s got the odds on how long he and his crew can keep it up? source

Imbibe in the style of your forefathers.

Grub Street spent a languid Tuesday evening at Puritan & Co., Will Gilson's new "urban farmhouse" on the outskirts of Inman Square. Busy without being noisy, cozy without being cute, and boasting one amazing Moxie-glazed lamb belly, Gilson's solo venture is off to a tasty start. See the birth and death of Americans in a real-time simulation of the United States

by Justin Rubio
birth death rate simulation

In the United States, there are about 11,500 births and 6,800 deaths every day — and to demonstrate what that would look like on a country-wide scale, Nowhere Near Ithica has created a real-time simulation that shows when and where both stages of life occur. In order to create the simulation, data from the United States Census Bureau was used to determine the birth and death rates per thousands, which was then made to correspond to the populations of each county to decide where they would take place. While the simulation isn't an exact representation of what is happening at the very moment, it's interesting to see the statistics visualized in a detailed map of the country.

Reason On How and Why 38 Studios Went Bust

by timothy
cathyreisenwitz writes "The 2012 bankruptcy of Rhode Island-based video-game developer 38 Studios isn't just a sad tale of a start-up tech company falling victim to the vagaries of a rough economy. It is a completely predictable story of crony capitalism, featuring star-struck legislators and the hubris of a larger-than-life athlete completely unprepared to compete in business." Reason makes no bones about its view of this kind of public-private "partnership."
