Lance Armstrong’s Next Ventures targets $75M

by Kate Clark

Next Ventures, an investment firm led by Lance Armstrong, has filed to raise $75 million for its debut venture capital fund.

According to paperwork submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission this morning, Armstrong and Next Ventures general partner Lionel Conacher have so far attracted $24.5 million from limited partners to back startups in the sports, fitness, nutrition and wellness markets.

Both Armstrong and Conacher are long-time athletes, with Armstrong, of course, known for his professional cycling career and high-profile doping scandal that resulted in the International Cycling Union stripping him of his seven Tour de France titles in 2012. Conacher’s bio states he is “a life-long multi-sport athlete and outdoorsman and proud member of Canada’s first family of sport.” Conacher also has experience in investment banking and private equity as the former vice chairman of Roth Capital Partners.

Next Ventures disclosed its first investment six months ago. The fund supplied capital to Carlsbad, Calif.-based PowerDot, a 2.5-year-old maker of an app-based, smart muscle stimulation device that sends electrical pulses to contract tender soft tissue, helping runners and other athletes recover from their workouts. The firm has since invested in sleep and activity tracker Oura, community-building fitness app Spar, and two others.

Armstrong, banned from cycling for life, got his start in investing after serving as an LP to Lowercase Capital. Through his investment in Lowercase, he received early stock in Uber that he claims “saved” his family from financial ruin.

If Armstrong and Conacher reach their targeted amount, Next Ventures would become one of the larger sports and fitness-focused funds as VCs double down on an industry led by Peloton’s sky-high success.

DoorDash claims drivers made an average of at least $17.50/hour on deliveries in 2018

by Megan Rose Dickey

On-demand food delivery startup DoorDash has been under fire as of late for its practices around paying drivers. In an email to drivers today, obtained by TechCrunch, DoorDash said drivers received an average of $17.50 or more per hour on deliveries in 2018. That figure, of course, does not take into account cost of mileage, payroll taxes for 1099 independent contractors and other expenses.

Sage Wilson, an organizer at nonprofit labor group Working Washington, explained to TechCrunch how that $17.50 per hour figure works out to less than $6 per hour — not including tips, cost of expenses and taxes. That figure, he said, is “based on our review of actual weekly pay data from DoorDash drivers” and an estimate that about 30 percent of the total income comes from tips.

DoorDash currently offsets the amount it pays drivers with customer tips. DoorDash describes its payment structure as follows: $1 plus customer tip plus pay boost, which varies based on the complexity of order, distance to restaurants and other factors. It’s only when a customer doesn’t tip at all, which DoorDash told Fast Company happens about 15 percent of the time, that DoorDash is on the hook to pay the entire guaranteed amount.

In the email sent to drivers today, with “Listening to the Dasher community” in the subject line, DoorDash CEO Tony Xu notes the level of recent discussion pertaining to DoorDash’s pay model. He goes on to defend the company’s practices, saying “we continue to hear from many of you that the model works: you know how much you’ll receive in advance, you receive the guaranteed minimum even if the customer doesn’t tip…”

He does add, however, “But we’ve also heard from some who expressed confusion about how pay is calculated and what happens with tips.”

In the coming weeks, DoorDash said it will launch surveys and organize roundtables for drivers to share their thoughts and concerns. In the email, DoorDash provides a link for drivers to sign up to be included. From there, Xu said DoorDash will look over the feedback, report what it has learned and “what changes we plan to make in response.”

This current model was the result of “months of testing” and surveys of thousands of Dashers. I’ve reached out to DoorDash and will update this story if I hear back.

Shaun White Reclaims His Halfpipe Throne While Making History in the Process

by HYPEBEAST

After a disappointing run during 2014's Winter Olympics held in Sochi -- finishing one position off the podium -- Shaun White found redemption today in Pyeongchang, South Korea, breaking an Olympic record in the process. The famed snowboarder/skateboarder found his footing today, putting up a final clean run during the halfpipe competition to claim his third Olympic gold, the first snowboarder in Olympic history to ever do so. After falling out of first place during previous runs, White’s score on his third and final run was 97.75, dropping his rival Ayumu Hirano back to silver; Scotty James of Australia took bronze.

On his final run, the Flying Tomato threw down a back-to-back double cork 1400s, claiming the 100th gold medal for Team USA in Winter Games history.

Yesterday, Chloe Kim became the youngest woman to win an Olympic snowboarding medal.

Nike Introduces New KD 10

by Hypebeast

From switching team in dramatic fashion to his ongoing feud with Lil B, Kevin Durant's career in the NBA has been an interesting one to say the least. With his Golden State Warriors set to take on the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals of the NBA Playoffs, Durant has a lot to celebrate right now, including the release of his brand new signature shoe, the Nike KD 10. The brand says the shoe is made to celebrate Durant's 10 years with the company since he began his professional career, one that has taken him from the Seattle Supersonics to the Oklahoma City Thunder after relocation and now in Golden State. This time around, Durant has opted to go for a flyknit base for the sneaker, saying he fell in love with the material after trying it out for himself.

“I got a pair of the Flyknit Racer during the 2012 games in London and immediately loved them. That shoe is so stylish, so innovative and so comfortable. I’ve been asking for Flyknit in my shoe and the KD 10 is my best shoe yet,” said Durant.

In addition to this, Durant said he and designer Leo Chang chose to keep some aspects of previous shoes, including the lace style and the Zoom cushion.

“They are big and stand out from a mile away. It is one element Leo and I talk about when working designs—one thing that goes under the radar is the laces," said Durant. "To have Flyknit and a unique lacing pattern was key for us."

As of right now, there are two announced colorways of the KD 10. The first sit he "Anniversary" colorway, which features a completely light blue body and a multi-colored Swoosh along both sides. The second colorway, "Still," is a more simple look, featuring a predominantly white body with grey undertones throughout the shoe. The "Anniversary" colorway is set to come out on May 26, while the "Still" version won't be out until June 1. Both will be available at any Nike retailer or online through their website.

Live in Harmony with a Tree

by Molly Thompson

224HFT3

Vietnam is experiencing more rapid urbanization than ever,  quickly turning from a tropical jungle to a fast-paced cityscape. In Ho Chi Minh City, where this project is located, only .25% of the entire urban area is devoted to green space. Lack of trees are tied to a variety of issues, from flash flooding to soil instability to air pollution, not to mention a more mundane landscape of concrete and asphalt. Vo Trong Nghia Architects have an unusual solution for this expanding problem: sharing your home with a tree.

HFT-13

Completed in 2014, these five concrete houses in the shape of pillars serve as “pots” for the living trees on their roofs. A thick soil layer retains water, absorbing rain, which helps reduce the risk of flooding. Each of these prototypes was designed to be affordable to encourage adoption and expansion — each home runs around $155,000 in American dollars.

HFT-12

Each house runs roughly 475 square meters, making them comfortable living arrangements for their human and tree tenants.

Universal Works' David Keyte on Working With Saucony and Why You Shouldn't Put Wings on Sneakers

by Hypebeast

UK-based brand Universal Works has surely and steadily been building a reputation as a manufacturer of top quality garments since 2008. Under the stewardship of founder and director David Keyte the brand has branched out of its Nottingham home, like Paul Smith before it, and now boasts two retail locations in London and a loyal, menswear-savvy following.

With a background in fashion split between streetwear and more traditional menswear, Keyte is perfectly positioned to create a brand blends the fashion-forward, the modern and classic effortlessly. We caught up with David to chat all things Uni Works and the brand's recent collaboration with American sneaker manufacturer Saucony.

How did the upcoming collaboration with Saucony come about?

We met some of the team at Saucony and mentioned that I was a runner and was currently running a lot of miles in their shoes, I admired their commitment to running shoes, as one of the oldest real running shoe companies. We got talking some more and then we thought a collaboration between the two brands could bring about an interesting sneaker.

Do you see any comparisons between Saucony and UW, or are the brand’s being so different the beauty of it?

In a way there is a lot of similarity: in the sneaker world they are a small player really, amongst a few giants, and we often feel that way too, but we like being small and working with other small companies. They also had a real commitment to quality on the project, and they are really friendly which is the most important similarity for us.

Where you given carte blanche on this, or is it something you worked closely with Saucony’s team on?

They would not let me mess with the real tech shoes, originally I wanted to make my own perfect tech running shoe. But we were given the opportunity to re-work footwear from their “originals” collection, which I was happy to do as twenty years ago they were technical running shoes!

"Never try too hard, don’t add wings to footwear."

Saucony is a brand in resurgence, what is it you like about them so much?

Their shapes and styles look just right, and maybe there is just so much product out there from the giants that you feel it’s time to see a different logo on the side of a sneaker.

Can we expect any more collaborations from UW in the coming months?

We never go looking for collab projects, they normally come about due to chance meetings with like-minded people. They are never about making money either, more about making something with people we like and admire, to create a Universal Works version of a product that otherwise wouldn’t come around. Maybe it is because they make a product outside of our production knowledge, so we like to take opportunities to learn from the experts. The answer though is yes, we have been working on a couple of projects with some amazing brands that you can keep an eye out for pretty soon.

"At Universal Works we make things that we want to wear."

Footwear collabs are always a tricky thing to get right. What, in your opinion, are the pitfalls you had to avoid?

Never try too hard, don’t add wings to footwear, and don’t do retro. At Universal Works we make things that we want to wear, we like to throw ideas in the mixer and see what comes out.

Which other brands would you, in an ideal world love to collaborate with?

Make some cool running kit with Icebreaker merino. Make our version of some old school Vans. Make a pair of football trainers with adidas. Make something with Satta, I’ve met him a few times through the industry and he’s such a great guy. Make the staff uniform for St Johns restaurant in London, so I can get a free dinner just once. Make anything with Comme Des Garçon, then I can die a happy man.

The Universal Works x Saucony Shadow Original Work pack drops on October 3 at END. For more information on the release head here

The Number One Question at NYFW

by Leandra Medine

Man-Repeller-fashion-week-missed-connections

Playing NYFW catch up? Check our first batch of street style, a recap of Altuzarra, Baja East and Wang, four styling tips from the runway thus far and don’t forget: we want you to write your own fashion week review

Stressful’s Law proves when two people are looking for one another at the same time in the same venue they will pass one another in a perpendicular manner for eternity with zero intersection unless one person stays put. It’s why your mother told you to stand still as your personal emergency plan should you ever get lost in the supermarket.

But fashion week ain’t our momma. As such, it’s a continual texting game of “Where are you?”; a finger-fury of schedule alignments, 160-character show reviews, shoe stalking, missed connections and the odd call to action: I’m hungry, let’s eat. What exactly does that look or read like? Check the convo between you and your friend at opposite ends of the bar last night — probably pretty similar. Or, read the fashion week equivalent between Leandra and Amelia below.
