Florida considers flipping Grier, Harris in QB rotation (The Associated Press)

ryan.curtis

Let's hope we have an offense all season!

Florida coach Jim McElwain is considering flipping his quarterback rotation this week. McElwain said Monday that starting redshirt freshman Will Grier and bringing sophomore Treon Harris off the bench is ''something we talked about'' as the Gators (1-0) prepare for East Carolina (1-0). Harris and Grier were nearly flawless in the season opener, a 61-13 victory against overmatched New Mexico State.

Florida is down to two scholarship quarterbacks with the departure of Skyler Mornhinweg to Columbia University. Coach Jim McElwain said Wednesday on a Southeastern Conference coaches' call that Mornhinweg had left the program. The Shocking Reason Why Superman, Batman, and the Flash Were Washing Windows at the Hotel Derek Today

by Swamplot
Superhero Window Washers at Hotel Derek, 2525 West Loop South, Galleria, Houston
No movie to promote. No pay squabble to publicize. No pediatric cancer patients to visit. Just: ’cuz. After a SkyEye HD copter spotted superheroes on the roof around lunchtime today, abc13 investigators called the Hotel Derek on Westheimer at the West Loop to get the marketing message. But none was available: “A hotel spokesperson says a standard window cleaning was scheduled, and guests and passersby just got a little something extra, courtesy of the window washers, who apparently took it upon themselves to show up for work in costume.” [abc13] … Read More

Houston’s Inner Loop Getting Ready for Interstate 69

by Swamplot
ryan.curtis

Tx DOTs stolen signs just increased 4000%

Snickers and awkward guffaws are likely to be heard all the way from the Northside to Afton Oaks next week, once state transportation officials sign off on the addition of another name to the 11.9-mile segment of State Hwy. 59 within Houston’s Inner Loop: Interstate Highway 69. New signs announcing I-69 proudly to the world will subsequently be erected along in-town stretches of the freeway, where they’ll likely be targeted for pointed display in neighborhood bars, strip clubs, or dorm rooms. Once complete, I-69 will connect the highway’s head at the Canadian border in Port Huron, Michigan, to its tail along the Mexican border, where it will spread into 3 separate paths to Laredo, McAllen, and Brownsville. Planners hope the availability of a smooth, continuous ride from north to south and back again along the eventual federally sanctioned route (sometimes called the NAFTA Superhighway) will stimulate and ease trade among the entwined nations. But how ready are locals to get on board with the new designation? I-69 signs have already been up since 2011 in separate stretches of the Eastex and Southwest freeways north and south of the 610 Loop, where it slips past Sugar Land, Greatwood, and a number of Houston area bedroom communities further south. “U.S. 59 has been the backbone of southwest Houston and all its destinations for over 50 years. There’s a level of comfort with the familiar number and its long-running influence in Houston. In contrast, I-69 is an unknown entity that seems to come out of nowhere with no history or sentimental value,” Houston highway historian Oscar Slotboom tells Houston Chronicle reporter Dug Begley, dropping the punchline. Adds the author of the encyclopedic Houston Freeways: “I think Houstonians will be very slow to adopt the I-69 designation.” I-69 coming through Houston, though few likely to notice [The Highwayman] Tracking the Progress of Interstate 69 in Texas [Alliance for I-69 Texas] Photo: AARoads Interstate-Guide … Read More

ROI of Brand Name Colleges? It’s What You Study In College That Matters, Not Where You Go

by Jonathan Ping
ryan.curtis

Think we can talk Kaylie out of wanting to be a zookeeper?

Soon high school seniors will start receiving their college acceptance letters. This week’s issue of The Economist has an article discussing the results of a PayScale study of the relationship between the financial return on investment (ROI) of a college degree with the selectivity of the college itself. Via NextDraft.

econpay_small

The two trendlines above support the conclusion that what you study matters far more than where you study it. The flatness of the lines show that selectively doesn’t improve ROI much for degrees of the same major, while the gap between them shows that the type of major has a significant effect on average future salary.

Engineers and computer scientists do best, earning an impressive 20-year annualised return of 12% on their college fees (the S&P 500 yielded just 7.8%). Engineering graduates from run-of-the-mill colleges do only slightly worse than those from highly selective ones. Business and economics degrees also pay well, delivering a solid 8.7% average return. Courses in the arts or the humanities offer vast spiritual rewards, of course, but less impressive material ones. Some yield negative returns. An arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art had a hefty 20-year net negative return of $92,000, for example.

You can also play around with the PayScale ROI rankings here.

Take from this data what you will, but perhaps it will soothe the pain of rejections and help relieve the societal pressure to get a “brand name” degree.

Why Hormone-Free, Antibiotic-Free Eggs Aren't Worth the Extra Money

You probably figured out that "natural" means very little as a food label . But what about more specific labels, like hormone-free or antibiotic-free eggs? In many cases, the labels on eggs indicate a difference that's small or nonexistent.
