Semiconducting MoS2(1-x)Se2x monolayers where x = 0–0.40 are successfully grown over large areas. A random arrangement of the S and Se atoms and a tunable bandgap photoluminescence are observed. Atomically thin, 2D semiconductor alloys with tunable bandgaps have potential applications in nano- and opto-electronics. Field-effect transistors fabricated with the monolayers exhibit high on/off ratios of >105.

Two Dimensional Materials Beyond MoS2: Noble-Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides

by Pere Miró, Mahdi Ghorbani-Asl, Thomas Heine

Abstract

The structure and electronic structure of layered noble-transition-metal dichalcogenides MX2 (M=Pt and Pd, and chalcogenides X=S, Se, and Te) have been investigated by periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The MS2 monolayers are indirect band-gap semiconductors whereas the MSe2 and MTe2 analogues show significantly smaller band gap and can even become semimetallic or metallic materials. Under mechanical strain these MX2 materials become quasi-direct band-gap semiconductors. The mechanical-deformation and electron-transport properties of these materials indicate their potential application in flexible nanoelectronics.

Experimental observation of exciton splitting and relaxation dynamics from PbS quantum dots in a glass matrix

by Fangyu Yue, Jens W. Tomm, and D. Kruschke

Author(s): Fangyu Yue, Jens W. Tomm, and D. Kruschke

Multiple optical transitions from PbS quantum dots (QDs) in glass matrix are observed. Energy separations between them amount up to ∼200 meV. Instead of being due to a size distribution of QDs, they are found to be related to a splitting of the lowest exciton levels. Systematic analysis of the relax...

Surface defects, acting as traps for charge carriers, are a key factor limiting the performance of colloidal quantum dot (CQD) photovoltaics. Revealing the full electronic band structure of PbS CQD devices, subjected to the latest surface passivation treatments, enables a direct correlation of features in the band structure with device performance characteristics, as described by Osman M. Bakr and co-workers on page 937.

Monolayer behaviour in bulk ReS2 due to electronic and vibrational decoupling

by Sefaattin Tongay

Article

Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides have emerged as interesting two-dimensional materials. Here, the authors show that in a new member of this family of compounds, rhenium disulphide, the layers in the bulk are vibrationally and electronically decoupled, so that they behave almost as monolayers.

Prolonging the lifetime of excited electrons of QDs by capping them with [small pi]-conjugated thiol ligands

A new strategy is reported here to stabilize the excited electrons within QDs using-conjugated ligand. An electron delocalized field is formed by mixing the LUMO energy levels of [small pi]-conjugated ligand with conductive band-edge energy (Ecb) of CdTe QDs, which will supply the excited electron with a more stable environment.
